- Something a bit different today, here's how ship girl naming works in the Sakura Empire:
0:00 - Destroyers: Named after natural phenomenons (weather, wind, tide, current, wave, moon, seasons, etc...).
4:36 - Light Cruisers: Named after rivers (including those later converted into heavy cruisers).
5:54 - Heavy Cruisers: Named after mountains (including those later converted into carriers).
7:26 - Battlecruisers: Named after mountains (including those later converted into carriers).
8:03 - Battleships: Named after old provinces of Japan and alternate names for Japan (including those later converted into aircraft carriers).
9:15 - Light Aircraft Carriers: Named after both real and mythical creatures.
9:58 - Aircraft Carriers: Named after both real and mythical creatures.
10:53 - Repair Ships: Named after straits and isthmuses.
11:03 - Submarines: Submarine Class - (number)
First Class submarines (over 1000 tons displacement) names are: I-(number)
Second Class submarines (500 - 1000 tons displacement) names are: Ro-(number)
Third Class submarines (under 500 tons displacement) names are: Ha-(number)

There is also an island named 'battleship island' for its supposed resemblance to the battleship Tosa
So i can call england dick island then
well i learned somenthing new today. thank you!
It makes sense to naming CV with Dragons, Cranes, Phoenix
Except Akagi and Kaga because they're originally a BB
I knew it. Haruna and Akagi are named after mountain. Initial D fans would notice this. :D
The Irony of Shouhou's Name... "Lucky Phoenix" Thou she was the first Light Aircraft carrier on the IJN side to be Sunk during the war
Scratch one flattop....
Mt. Haruna is the real life basis of Mt. Akina where characters of Initial D race through.
Akagi too
Additional information regarding the carriers:
You can also see if they are converted from other military ships, converted from civilian ships or built as carriers.
If the name of the ship includes 'you' (hawk), then the ship is converted from Japanese built ocean liners, with Shinyo being the sole exception, who was converted from a German ocean liner.
If the ship is converted from a submarine tender, you could find the word 'ho' (phoenix) in their name, with the exceptions being Hosho (who was the world's first purpose-built aircraft carrier), the entirety of the Chitose class (both were converted from seaplane tenders) and Taiho (IJN's try at armoring the flight deck of a carrier).
Akagi, Kaga and Shinano were the only 3 ships converted to aircraft carriers that retained their original name.
All other heavy and light carriers were all designed and built as a carrier.
taihou's chinese skin is named after her english translation
For real?! That's interesting to know
7:21 Now I know where I'm going to visit first if I ever travel to Japan. Gotta pay respect to the origins of best shipgirl.
6:09 no one:

5:20 Suzuya river(Reka Susuya) is in Sakhalin, a state of Russia

me: there are many kinds of winds?
the wind: always was * aims pistol *
9:15 you should add that they're flying creatures.
Nice video, very informational for those who are not familiar with the Japanese language. Well, even those who actually are may have trouble since many kanji used in the ship names are now obsolete or were simplified after the 1946 reform. For example 蒼龍 has the alternative kanji for blue/azure/green. Nowadays pretty much only 青 is used. I have seen the alternative form only in idiomatic expressions. Btw D, are you Japanese?
I am Vietnamese! :)
Anyway thank you for your awwducational video, D!
@@DforDragon Oh I see, Vietnamise also has kanji since it was used in official writing in the past, but nowadays I dont know how often it is used. Well, anyways thank you for the awesome video!
Hello.
The true meaning of "蒼龍" is another name for the legendary dragon, "青龍". The names of Japanese aircraft carriers use words related to legendary creatures and birds. (Since 1943, the name of the mountain has also been used.) And if you use another kanji that means blue, the meaning and pronunciation will change. However, there was a time when the kanji for "竜" was used for "龍" in Soryu.
(I use Google Translate.)
こんにちは。
「蒼龍」本当の意味は、伝説の龍「青龍」の別名です。日本の航空母艦の名前は、伝説の生物や鳥に関係する言葉を使用しています。(1943年からは山の名前も使用するようになりました。)そして蒼龍を他の青を意味する漢字を使用してしまうと別の意味になったり発音も変わってしまいます。ただ、蒼龍の「龍」は「竜」の漢字が使われていた事がありました。
@@user-cv1mg8ix3k Thank you for the information!
Taihou best Carrier
Atelier music means thumbs up
8:21um...an error on Nagato part
Aw I should have checked one more time before uploading... thanks for pointing out!
no wonder atago is named after a mountain ;)
soryu and hiryu is one class
Nope. Hiryū was a modification of Sōryū's design and they're considered separate classes.
Cute
In their tongue she is dovahwallet: cat burglar!!!!
So there's an Ise Class Battleship named Ise but also Ise Class Battleship named something else?
So then why are Hiryuu and Souryuu portrayed as rabbits instead of dragons?
I dont know but i dont mind
Its funny now that i think about it this is why New Jersey is a Bunny instead of a Black Dragon. Its continuity
what soundtracks did you use? they are calming, especially the Asashio class
It's the main city theme from a game game called Atelier Lydie & Suelle: ruclips.net/video/faQCPDpLEts/видео.html (not the exact version that I used, can't find it on RUclips).
I use a lot of music from the Atelier series so if you look for their soundtracks you will find many songs I that use.
@@DforDragon kay thanks a lot. Dont know much about Atelier series except Ryza's thiccness
Japan would have won WW2 easily if they had named all their Naval ships after sushi. I mean, who doesn't like sushi. Yea, Yamato sounds badasss and will fuck you up, but Unagi sounds inviting. This is why I can never be Japan Defense Minister.
Koff koff
We got Tone chibi?
Who is I-8? And what event can we obtain her?
German naming destroyer Z and random number generator
I-56 is available in NA server?
Can i ask if the bgm is from Atelier series?

8:23 wait why Nagato is named Tosa??
