- Occupying a modern building in the east of the City of Kingston, Ontario, the Colorado-based company Startek employed as many as 1,000 local people until 2021. With no new tenant coming forward, faced with massive costs to maintain the four-storey premises, the owner elected to demolish it -beginning work in February 2024.
Thanks for this. We drove by the other day and wondered what had happened. What a disposable society we have created.
Happy to share - I don't think that the owner, or anyone else, was thrilled to destroy a serviceable structure, but economics just moved away from call centre operation here and no one else seemed able to find a use for the building, which was quite specialised in its own way.
@Aerosnapper I used to work there, and I agree it was rather specialized. It's got a ton of open space, and IT wiring that, unfortunately, dates back well over a decade. Call centers have mostly shifted to remote, and the ones who haven't would need to pay a ton of money to rewire everything to modern ethernet standards.
It's a shame, but it's also understandable.
Brilliant filming and production, Mike.
Thank you, Bob - much appreciated
Very cool. Thanks Mike.
No - thank you, Scott - this is an interesting - and a little tragic event
It looked like they still had furniture on the fourth floor. What a shame .. .
Gary - always sad to see a perfectly serviceable structure go - but no alternative for the owner, who had paid out more than a million just to keep the place going whilst he sought a tenant
Brant, That wasn't furniture.. It was stuff from the demo piled in the corner
at 1:53 they looked like chrome chairs but it looks like I was mistaken. The loss of this modern building is still tragic nonetheless. @@APC93
Sickening to watch this waste of a modern building. Looks like it was extremely well built.
It's easy to draw that conclusion - but there was no interest in leasing the building and no alternative use for it - and it was costing a lot of money to maintain... harsh economic facts...
True, still a waste though. We hear the preaching of sustainability and environmentalism from every level. All virtuous and no substance. That was actually a very stylish building for it's age. Keepup the good work, really enjoy your videos and narration. Have you got anything about Howe Island or the ferry systems?@@Aerosnapper
Thanks Mike!
Happy to follow this - I hope it helped understand what’s happening
What a waste! People are crying out for apartments! Why couldn’t they with the city and provincial help renovated the building for apartments? Ridiculous!
It's my understanding that the building layout made a simple conversion impossible and that apartments are to be built on site.
I hope that this brings new employment opportunities to the area. I think there are going to be residential (condo) with businesses in the bottom.
I hope you’re correct - only time will tell - thanks for watching.
