  • THE WORLD’S FIRST ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE PHOTOGRAPHY BIENNALE “VAGUE STARES” IN KAUNAS
On January 31, 2023, The Interdisciplinary Institute of Art and Science opened the First Artificial Intelligence Photography Biennale, which features photographers from eleven nations. The initiator and organizer of the Biennale, artist, and representative of interdisciplinary arts, Tomas Lagūnavičius, says:
“Artificial intelligence works with different algorithms. One of the ways to create a work of art using artificial intelligence is to create a text and give AI a task. Along with painters, actors, directors, and other representatives of art, a new kind of artist is emerging-the creator of the conceptual text. Why is this so important? Because the success of the artwork and its result depends on the concept.
I believe that the creation of works using artificial intelligence is art because the artist-human being creates the concept for the work of art. In addition, we know that photography reflects reality and artificial intelligence creates completely different things that you cannot even imagine.
Conceptually, you can think at the word level, but not at the picture level. And that's an excellent tool for any artist who wants to do something different in the art world. Conceptual artists now have a wonderful tool.
And we are the first to open The World’s 1st Artificial Intelligence Photography Biennale, with the participation of 11 artists from around the world. Artists have sent more than 80 artworks to this Biennale. One theme unites the artists, but all the works are very different. Some use black and white photographs as a basis, others color photographs; some use faces, others cityscapes.
We came up with a different concept for the biennale. We did not put all the works in the exhibition at once, but selected one work from each author and made it an interactive installation with many additional elements so that the viewer who came to the exhibition can create different shadows and new constructions. The viewer of the exhibition is not just a passive observer; he is an active participant in the exhibition-a co-creator. We invite you to view the works of other artists virtually, on the Facebook page, and on the RUclips channel.
The task of the observer is to feel the truth that the “machine” - artificial intelligence - sees because its view of the world is completely different. Artificial intelligence is a tool to achieve results. I would call it one of the newest and most universal things that I think has a great impact on the art world. I do not want to say that it will radically change anything in the world of art, but we will soon see the impact it will have. I would like to congratulate everyone who works in this field! I invite you to visit the Biennale, to participate in the exhibitions and to study this art intensively, to discover new horizons every time.”
Artists participating in the exhibition: Alba Lopez (Spain), Berislav Akju (Croatia), Evald Bauer (Germany), Gogi Kotric (Bulgaria), Joki Nagata (Japan), Kori Babilovich (United States), Neko Hoki (New Zealand), Nikola Mercier (France), Tuomo Livoni (Italy), Tomas Lagūnavičius (Lithuania), Algimantas Žukauskas (Lithuania).
Organizers: The World’s 1st Artificial Intelligence Art Association (WAIAA), International Association of Visual Performing and Other Art (IAVPOA), Contemporary Art and Science Center, and Open Youth Space under KSJMC.
