The lead singer is wearing a red codpiece. Is became his signature look along with his hair cut. I love Cameo! Hearing them always takes me right back to the 80s. Funky, cool, unique. That is Cameo Thanks for the reaction.
Man I remember my dad let us have a house party and this song was out. We played it at least 50 times that night. We did the Redbox all night long. And yes I had a serious high-top fade back then.
This will forever be the jam!! This song has staying power. It was a song we jammed out hard to back in the 80's. This song was released in 1986. One of my favorites! So glad you guys reacted to this one.
the lead singer, who is FIRE, is Larry Blackmon and the singer that is falsetto, who stands out to me personally, is Charlie Singleton this song is SO SWEET! Word Up is nice but this one sticks with you! I'm glad you're getting to more of my suggestions! I heard of the High Top Fade and Boxcut both I went to middle school and high school with a predominantly African-American class in the 2000s into the 2010s and I'm white so I saw those styles every day! they never went out of style! I loved seeing them! Funk is a badass music genre! 🎆🔥
Legendary in the R&B music world, one of the greatest Funk / R&B bands from the 70’s to the 90’s! This was hot in the radio, in the cars and in the clubs! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 And don’t forget the movie The Best Man introduced this song to younger fans ..
If they haven't already done them, here are some great tracks I would love to see reactions to: "Oh Sheila" Ready For The World "The Bird" The Time "A Love Bizarre" Sheila E.
This was the follow up to "Word Up", their biggest hit. Check out "Back and Forth" and "You Make Me Work". The lead singer's name is Larry Blackmon. (And for Amber... the sax player's name is Michael Brecker.)
Michael Brecker! He and his brother Randy (trumpet) were two of the most sought-after studio musicians for decades! Jay and Amber, y'all *really* need to check out their track "Sneakin' Up Behind You". Talk about funky jazz!
Larry Blackmon was originally the drummer he became the lead singer when the original lead singer Wayne Cooper passed away in 1984. " attack me with your love" and the sequel to it " Single Life" were big hits, and their 1990 hit "I want it now" is also super funky
Oh man I couldn’t stop laughing when Jordan said what is he wearing. When I showed this video to my kids awhile back my daughter said the same thing almost the same way. Too funny. Love this song
Guys, this is yet another hit. This song made everyone tear up the dancefloor and at weddings it became a popular song to do the famous "Electric Slide" (as in the 1999 movie "The Best Man" with Terrence Howard, Nia Long, Taye Diggs, Regina Hall, Morris Chestnut, Sanaa Lathan, etc.) GREAT MOVIE
Takes me back to high school, when little twerp me would say "yes I do", "indeed I do", and "strawberry, raspberry, all those good things" in his voice. This song is unforgettable.
“Candy” was one of my all time favorites by them! That front cup was a hot mess that caused everybody to convolute with laughter! Their songs were definitely dance tunes!💕
Love, love Cameo! This takes me back to my 20's in the 1980s. The lead singer is Larry Blackmon. They have so many great songs from the 1970s through the early 1990s. Some of my favorite Cameo songs are "Just be Yourself" "Shake your Pants" & "Flirt" these earlier songs and sooo funky. Other good ones are "Alligator Woman" and "Singlel Life".
"Word up!" Best song in my opinion from them. Nice reaction guys. I enjoyed your Fargo reaction as well. "Single Life" "Why Have I Lost You" "Back And Forth" "Sparkle" "She's Strange" "Shake Your Pants" "Attack Me With Your Love" "Hangin Downtown" "Skin I'm In" "We're Goin' Out Tonight" "You Make Me Work" "I Just Want To Be" "Don't Be Lonely" "Feel Me" "Keep It Hot" "Rigor Mortis" "Cameosis" "Don't Be So Cool" "I Want It Now" "Talkin' Out The Side Of Your Neck" "Flirt" "I'll Always Stay" "Throw It Down" "Love You Anyway" "Your Love Takes Me Out" and "Knights By Nights" There you go guys, have fun choosing your next Cameo song haha.
The earlier Cameo albums had several lead singers, the band had 10 or 11 members then. The lead here is Larry Blackmon who is also the drummer and founder of Cameo. Larry Blackmon, Larry Dodson (lead singer of the Bar-Kays), & Commodores era Lionel Richie all got part of their vocal style from Sugarfoot of the Ohio Players. Since Jay has said he likes falsetto, Wayne Cooper of the original lineup of Cameo does that. Some Cameo songs you can hear Wayne is "We're Going Out Tonight", "Shake Your Pants", & "Why Have I Lost You"
First time I ever heard this was about 6 years ago in a club in south London, it was playing when I got through the door and the dancefloor was in pure synchronisation. I'd never seen anything like it. About 50 people. The song was blowing my mind at the same time, esp with the little guitar solo hitting out of nowhere Obviously I joined in, and then later on spotted someone who was in there and got the name of the track off them.
I listen to these songs and I am overwhelmed with such a powerful melancholic nostalgia. It’s because a song can take you back instantly to a moment, or a place, or even a person. no matter what else has changed in you or the world, that one song stays the same, just like that moment.
This song will always remind me of the movie The Best Man- which is a must see at some point. I think it is the last seen at the wedding- the line dance is so fun to watch (and get up and dance to) 😃
One of their earlier songs from 1979 is 'I Just Want To Be" which laid out the blueprint for the rest of their career. Very funky. And the lead singer is also their drummer, Larry Blackmon.
Here I am again today. I subscribed because I'm having so much fun watching you react to the music I love. I've spent hours again today. You two are a lot of fun. And you're such a cute couple. ❤❤
YES, YES, YEEEEEES!!!!!!!!! FINALLY!!!!!! Now you see what you've been missing!!!! I was rockin' this song as a young teenager over and over again on a Friday night in a rental with my dad. GOOD GOOD GOOD TIMES!!!!!
The famous cod piece (red cup)! It was like a trademark for Larry Blackmon, the lead singer, as well as his distinctive voice! He was asked to wear it for the 'Word Up' video, and the rest is history. He's 66 and still performing, still with the high top fade! Two more songs to hear are "Single Life" and "Back and Forth"!
If you did not grow up in the 1970s and 80s you have no idea what you missed, I was fortunate to have lived through those decades , nothing will ever come close
Larry Blackmon ! That vocal style was originated by Sugarfoot of the Ohio Players ! You both said the same thing while reacting to the Ohio players about the proud family voice . Sugar was the OG on that !
Larry Blackmon, the lead singer, is wearing what's called a codpiece. He explained its origin in a radio interview. When he was outfitted for the “Word Up” video, he was dressed in black spandex - “As usual,” as he bemoaned. After slipping into that famed one-piece, he was handed a box and peeked inside. “Then I shut the box really fast,” Blackmon said. “Inside was this red cup. I said, ‘I’m not wearing this!’ But they talked me into it, and it has become famous around the world. I am asked about it all the time.”
Another CLASSIC!! Love yall reactions!! This song will come with a lot of "whispers"...its still a CLASSIC!! RnB and Funk Fusion is what comes to mind.... They had a unique sound...musically and vocally. Two songs by them I thing you would also like, " She's Strange " and "Keep it Hot".....thanks for sharing your journey into music!!
I was a sophomore in high school when this came out in 1986. We did a line dance to this song at school dances; The Electric Slide AKA The Candy Dance. P.S. He's wearing a red Cod Piece.
1986! Great album too! Larry Blackmon lead singer with the cup lol, Back and Forth was my favorite jam on this album. Too many jams to name in the 70s and 80s!
Amber & Jay, Let me tell U something, I got to C Cameo in downtown 🌆 O-town (Orlando) at a free concert 🎶 n they R just bad asses. Their music 🎶 is so iconic n yes the lead singer 👨🎤 had the same red cup in the 🎶. Glad that I got to c them Live & In Living Color.
Larry Blackmon started in the 70"s in the band called the ny players ,ge was originally a drummer and stayed in that position until he rebranded and used that unique voice . This group has been around 40 yrs a miracle within itself although several members have gone in and out of the band the foundation of that funk has been maintained with integrity !!!
You should know this song from the movie The Best Man. They used it in a scene. Believe it or not there were once 11/12 ppl in the early days of this band. The lead singer Larry Blackman was actually the drummer. You should check out their early hits "Why Have I Lost You" or "Shake Your Pants"
I was just looking at your reaction to Word Up yesterday hoping that you would come back and watch Candy. Cameo has always had the kind of Punk Funk type vibe. She's Strange will be the third one you want to watch. As for Candy, Mariah Carey took the sample for her song Loverboy from the Glitter Soundtrack. Also, that red jock strap worn by the lead singer is a staple for Cameo's stage act. That whistle sound that you hear is on a lot of their records.
Cameo has a bunch of funky hits if you want to go down that rabbit hole. Next up should be “Shake Your Pants”. Another great funky band from that era is Con Funk Shun.
Another of Cameo's jams from around this time were "Single Life", "She's Strange", and "Back and Forth". But you should also check out their earlier work too, specifically "Rigor Mortis", and "I Just Want To Be", and one of their later works that came after this song that is fire is "Skin I'm In". 😉
They have a slew of Jams from Funk to Slow Jams. For funk listen to She's Strange, Rigor Mortis, I just want to be, Funk Funk and so many more. For slow jams try Sparkle, Why have I lost you, Feel Me and Were going out to nite just to name a few. Cameo Rocks !
Larry Blackmon is everything. The entire group is fire. When you go down that rabbit hole and really check them out you will see what we all mean. I think that they go back to 1974. Telling you guys about them is not the same as experiencing them.
This song has been sampled a gang of times. The song has been sampled by various artists, including 2Pac ("All Bout U", featured on his album All Eyez on Me), Will Smith ("Candy", on his album Big Willie Style), and Mariah Carey ("Loverboy", on the soundtrack to the film Glitter); the latter song would reach #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2001.
Larry Blackmon is the lead singer. These guys have been around since the 70s. Check out they're other hits Single life, sparkle, Attack me with your love!
If you want more Cameo funk...listen to She's Strange!!! All the funk you want right there. ALSO...y'all loved Larry Graham from Sly and the Family Stone when you reacted to his single A One in a Million You. Wellp!!!...his funk band, Graham Central Station has a song called, The Jam. Check THAT out if you want to hear him play some funky bass...(which is what he later played on tour with Prince.) 😉
@@RobertSmith-js2kz What do you mean? Candy is far more well known than Word Up. Candy has been sampled by several well known artists. Word Up hasn't been. Candy IS Cameo's signature song and the song most people associate them with when they think of the group.
@@ChrisC709 Word up was all over top-40 radio. It crossed over to the mainstream. Candy did not. Great song yes, as ubiquitous and well known by EVERYONE ... no way. Being sampled mean it was recognized by certain demographic. Word up recognized by ALL. It's a fact. Check the Billboard Hot 100 numbers. Not a big deal ... it is what it is.
Cameo from 70s is the bomb. The singer is the drummer. The band was huge. 80s everybody from David Bowie to Earth Wind Fire went commercial to POP. What the people want is never the artists best.
Thank you very much for getting back to Cameo, they're such a fun band. Please check out Shake Your Pants (1980) Attack Me With Your Love (1985) Thanks again Jay and Amber.
Y'all should check out out "oh Sheila", by Ready For The World. Another super funky classic from the '80s. Also, when I was a teenager in the '80s, the "Gumby" hairstyle was called the "Reagan", because it was similar in shape to president Reagan's hair
The lead singer is Larry Blackmon and he is a Juilliard graduate.
Yep, the High Top Fade. This whole era was pure 🔥 I wouldn't trade having come of age during this era for anything.
Our Radio Stations back then were FIRE! The late 70's and all the 80's radio kept us rockin!
i was in Japan dancing with very pretty Japanese girls and once in awhile i got lucky!
Check out ‘Shake Your Pants’! 🔥
Early days…late 70’s
This performance video is WILD 🔥
@@AL13NM Remember calling in to radio stations for dedications, and making mix tapes from the song when you caught it on the radio? Great times!
Speaking of which, have you guys ever checked out House Party, from 1990? If not, I'd love to see a movie reaction to that.
Cameo gots tons of hits going back to the late 70’s. “She’s Strange” or “Single Life” should be next.
‘Shake Your Pants’ is FIRE! 🔥
The video is wild… late 70’s
And don't forget the 3rd single off of the album "Back and Forth" too!!
It has to be "Sparkle" if you want something completely different.
She’s Strange is fire. Definitely review that one.
@@bigsteve9279 “Be Yourself” is another earlier funk favorite of mine.
"Candy" always was and always will be straight fire, my favorite song by Cameo. The lead singer's name is Larry Blackman.
His son is my Masonic Lodge Bro.
The lead singer is wearing a red codpiece. Is became his signature look along with his hair cut. I love Cameo! Hearing them always takes me right back to the 80s. Funky, cool, unique. That is Cameo Thanks for the reaction.
That cod piece is iconic.
This was the jam. Iconic bass line. You probably don’t want to know what candy they were talking about.
Coke
I bet Jay would get stupid on the dance floor. When this jam came on EVERYBODY got stupid on the dance floor.

Yep they had a great falsetto singer who died named Wayne Cooper.
@@poppingjazthey most certainly did.
Before they were Cameo, they were the New York City Players. Definitely had to change that name because of the other amazing funk band from Ohio

Cameo was definitely fire 🔥
I just thought about another fire band… ‘Hot Chocolate’!
How have we not reacted on them?
Yep. Definitely us young bucks and hit that electric slide with this song.
YES!!!!! PLAY IT AGAIN!!!! Nenah Cherry, Buffalo Stance is a banger! Toni Tony Tone, Feels good!!!
I second the Toni Tony Tone request. Good call!
I’ll jump on that bandwagon, and add that you also need to check out “born not to know”
If they haven't already done them, here are some great tracks I would love to see reactions to:
"Oh Sheila" Ready For The World
"The Bird" The Time
"A Love Bizarre" Sheila E.
Jermaine Stewart's "We Don't Have to Take Our Clothes Off (to have a good time)" is another good one from this era. 🥰

Check THAT out if you want to hear him play some funky bass...(which is what he later played on tour with Prince.) 😉
Thanks for the memories Cameo! This song rocks.. this stuff is starting now!
Classic song from Cameo. Probably more well known than Word Up.
Not even close. But it is the better song. By FAR.
Man now I really miss the 80s, all the music was hits from pop to easy listening and the entire decade had a certain sound and vibe.
Back and Forth is another funky one.
Definitely!!!!!!
It makes me feel so old but also delighted to see young people enjoying the music I danced to as a small child. My dad LOVED Cameo
Thank you very much for getting back to Cameo, they're such a fun band. Please check out Shake Your Pants (1980)
Attack Me With Your Love (1985)
Thanks again Jay and Amber.
"Shea Strange" is a good one too.
@@GonRogue-85 yes I agree 100% .
Back in the day, a lot of these funk songs were great line dance songs. Picture a gym full of kids at a prom doing the same one dance. So much fun!
Y'all should check out out "oh Sheila", by Ready For The World. Another super funky classic from the '80s. Also, when I was a teenager in the '80s, the "Gumby" hairstyle was called the "Reagan", because it was similar in shape to president Reagan's hair
