Thanks! I have a 1981 GMC Caballero (like the El Camino) that the gaskets around the heater box are shot, dry rotted and leaking into the cabin. I pulled it off and reinstalled with new gasket rebuild set. Your video helped me get it disconnected from inside the cabin. Much appreicated.
I’ve got a decent amount undone just need to pull it thermo control wires. Question! I’m getting rid of all factory ac/heater to later replace with vintage air. I can remove every bit of wiring, ground, vacuum lines etc etc correct?
Love this channel! Thinking of removing/flushing mine out, because when it rains i get water on my passenger floor and it recently started to come on the driver floor as well. Firewall isn’t cracked so I think it should be a clogged hvac box or drain but i’m having trouble finding it.
After watching your vid and seeing I had to remove the fender well - Well Mine box never worked and I was plating it off - Very fast to use a saw zaw and hammer to get down to those bottom bolts from the top - I got a nascar air cleaner and im going to have a local tin shop fab up a air system and pull the air this area - I really like your videos thanks !
So is the 81' chevy caprice classic 4 door sedan v8 engine G body's because i have a problem with my A/C & heat unit not turning on at all and when i was looking at the video of your right here u was showing the main power connector for it i was wondering if that's the problem maybe why i ain't getting no power to my unit now cutting on
78 El Camino had plastic inner wells. Its best to remove them to get to all of the bolts. Even with the engine out there are bolts behind the inner wells.
Brian I need help. First of all your channel is awesome. Second I have a 87 Monte Carlo LS and I’m trying to get me climate controls inside the cabin to work. The this is there are a lot of wires that were cut in the area where the actuator and relay are located. My problem is I don’t know which wire gives the relay power in order for the controls to work. Can you help please and thanks.
Glad you like the channel and thanks for yoru message. All dash vents are vacuum controlled. The only relay is located under the hood near the blower motor for the high speed fan. The main vacuum lines for the vents are located under the hood and are hard plastic and look like wires. They are purple, gray and black. Make sure those are not damaged because it will cause the system not to work.

Great video, thank you for your effort, it’s much appreciated. Any secret to disconnecting the vacuum line connection? Just pull? I’m scared to break it.

Would you KNOW what all is needed, or is "similar" in converting a C-85 (Factory Automatic A/C air) ... to that of a C-60 system. IOW: I have an automatic air car, and the programmer's "out", thus: I wanna convert that same car to the manual blower speed switch (or again: a "C-60" system as most "A" cars this year had) ... are the ducts and doors all the same ? / or would you happen to know if all the duct-work / case needs to be changed out as well ? Thanks ! .
You will have to pull the dash and gut the temp sensor equipment and swap it out with the manual set up. It can be done but with some work for sure. Finding a car in the yard is best so you can see exactly what you need.
I have your "C-60" Option here to already do that ... (or to "see" exactly). I think ("I hope") the only difference to be the "Programmer" (and it's removal), to THEN attach that heat door pivot (the one broken in your clip) and THEN "plug-n-play" the rest. The only unknown: IF the "BOX" is different ... It SHOULD (I hope) be "fashioned" the same, as the only difference may be the "vacuum rotary selector valve" instead of being motor / programmer driven, will THEN BE MANUALLY "selected" / or "driven. I just bought two more of the "A" Bodied Regal's, and BOTH were the reliable "C-60" as you have (again) HERE. Fortunately, their still are many here in MI. THANKS !!
I have a dash removal video in my Gbody How To play list but from a Cutlass however Monte and Cutlass are nearly identical when it comes to how the dash is mounted. Watch that video and you will be good to go.
Could be many things. You can over fill the freon, the orfice tube could be plugged, compressor is going bad or blower motor is not working on full speeds. Dash vents not working properly. Blend door not opening correctly and so on.
How do you replace the arm the cable was attached to? Mine is also broken and the rod attached to it just pulled out. Air conditioning was not coming out of the dash vent but cold air was coming out of the defrost and floor vent.
My ac has never worked. Im removing my ac box. But what tf do i do with the ugly heater core? I want to remove it too but what do i do with the 2 hoses connected to the radiator and thermostat..or is it the water pump? Idk. Do i just run the hose from radiator to thermostat instead?
Hello Brian. I have a request for you. Do you have any videos or how-to in removing springs and lower control arms? I need to change out the ball joints on mine and you are the go to guy. Please let me know. Thanks again
Mine is the same way, it does defrost and floor. I know the vacuum lines on mine are totally disconnected but I can't find a diagram or anything showing how to put it back together properly.
Depends if it still has the AC/Heater box itself. If he removed it all then you need to buy it all and reinstall. I have all the part needed email me at classicgbodygarage@gmail.com
Junkyard, local craigslist, join Classic Gbody Garage on Facebook and ask there. I know they have yards in your area based on our email conversation and your location. Don't expect to find a Gbody today but they are around. Just keep looking.
Hello could you tell me how to remove the cables that work a non AC interior vents on a 1981 Chevy El Canino. the cable pull controls are centered under the steering column. one one of the pull outs is broken. I need to take it out of the car to try to repair it. I have located were the cables attach behind the glove box but I can't figure out how they come off the pins. Thank you
clips most likely. You are talking about a NON AC car one in which I have never messed with. Please join my facebook page and ask there. The link is in the description or go to FaceBook and type in CLASSIC GBODY GARAGE
You need to check that the vent doors are moving inside your dash. Most likely vacuum operated so make sure they are getting proper vacuum and moving as they should. You can hear them moving as you slide the selector so make sure all is working first. You might have a mouse next up in there too. Just need to start taking things apart.
The arm fits into a slot in the to of the box so you have to pull it up through the slot. Turn the arm as you pull up and it will find the slot on its own and come out. I plan to do a video on this.
I don't know what kind of body is my 64 impala. Could you take a video on how to remove the heater core from the inside. I'm trying to get the a/c and heater to work. Thanks Sir
Gbody AC/Heat harnesses are the same through out the years the Engine harness is different by year and by engine type for the most part especially in the later years where GM ties the AC into the computer
I have a problem with the AC / heater fan on my Cutlass. It doesn’t work on high or low speed, it only works on medium-high and medium-low. Ever had this issue? Also, I’ve noticed a lot of air blowing out of the AC heater box when the heater is on. Is this normal?
It could be a few things with your blower motor. Plugs under the hood that lead to the blower motor and relay corrode and go bad or your dash switch is bad. Not sure what you mean by air blowing out of the box.
I mean when the car is running and the heater is on, if I pop the hood and put my hand above the AC heater box, I can feel hot air blowing out pretty hard.
Hello Sir, I was wondering if you could help me out with my vacuume problems on my heater for a el Camino 85, or maybe make a video on tracing the lines, thank-you I've found your videos very helpful
hey Brian would you be interested in doing a video on replacing or connecting vacuum lines in the right places for the whole car (from a/c, idle, carburetor, cruise control) to function properly?
You need a harness from a 305 car. You might be able to get the V6 harness to work but some wires, namely the starter wires might be too short and battery cables on wrong sides depending on which side those components were on originally.
Hello! This video is very helpful. Is it the same process with putting a a/c & heater box into a 83 Grand Prix LJ, also do you have or can you make a video demonstrating the process? Thx
Yeah that was my first car a 1983 Pontiac Grand Prix LJ I picked up in high school for about $600. I actually converted my manual AC car to a factory automatic AC setup from an older Grand Prix. I miss that car dearly man.
Is there a way 2 manually get mi heat 2 blow thru the vents without completely dismantling mi dash.. I hook tht purple vacuum line 2 manifold vacuum n no change jus defrost n floor dnt kno if it's trash jamming the doors or what
Marion Walker then you have a stuck vent inside the dash or the selector is not distributing vacuum to that vent servo. You will need to pull the selector out and find out if vacuum is getting to each servo when you move the selector.
That cable on the heater controls is really impossibly easy to break and the same for the back of the vacuum lines. Never knew then how to get around that.
Can someone please answer this question for me....if a old school comes with the a/c deleted and it's sealed up with the metal plate is there a possible way of reopening/cutting the original hole to have the a/c put back in its original place or is it not worth going through all of that work?
I want to remove the A/c box but still have the heater? what needs to be bought for this? Thank great explanation and Video of what is needed to remove this piece of crap box.
Scott Curry sorry I mean that for the other comment here, same idea though for you .gotta remove it all then re-install the heter core luckily that is easier than re-installing the air conditioning
William Seemann your going to have to remove it all . re-install the air conditioning..that will involve removing the refrigerant and replacing it.. if you have no experience with a/c system do your research and if you have the money to buy or rent the specialty tools like the gauges hoses and vaccum pump and intermediate level mechanic can do it .my tip with ac systems is take everything apart clean it with a pressure washer make sure everything is DRY !!! any mostire will givr you problems.re -assemble with NEW lubed o-rings and you should have nice cold air for years ...there are great videos by Eric the car guy, scannerdanner, chrisfix ect.. good luck
G body have a square 4 pin connection for the ac wires to go into the pancake compressor 85 monte 305 serpentine setup I’m confused how to run those 4 wires into my 2 wire connection compressor
I appreciate the suggestion however each Gbody based on year and engine type is different. Now if you are referring to the vacuum lines that run the AC system dash vents, I do have plans for that. Thanks again and for watching.
Classic G-Body Garage great channel and i appriciate all the knowledge given, my wife just gifted me with a 86 cutlass salon. Something i have been wating for years but there are somthing i need to do and reading the vacuum line diagrams been ah rough start haha but i love the channel great work and will be looking out for the Ac vacuum line video your gonna do thank u

No, the ground is to reduce static in your radio. If your fan isn't working then you have other wiring issues.

I don't but make sure you use a durable spring compressor. Springs can be dangerous!
Since I’m not keeping it doesn’t work , I wouldn’t have to remove fender or liner to remove right? I can break it piece by piece and remove it?
You can break it apart yes but why ruin it?
Classic G-Body Garage didn’t work & was Realy messed up. I broke it off piece by piece . Came out real nice , ordered the plate off jegs
Are all gbody ac box interchangeable thru all years?
Yes except turbo cars a slightly different. but will fit.
can you do a video on the AC unit concerning how to make the AC blow thru the dash vents cause mine only blows thru the defrost vents
Mine is the same way, it does defrost and floor. I know the vacuum lines on mine are totally disconnected but I can't find a diagram or anything showing how to put it back together properly.

I can do that. I have had a few requests for this type of video. A common Gbody issue.

How do you remove the wiper arms ?
I have a question how do I cancel the ac on g-body if I don’t want remove the heater box what holes do I have to block.
Just remove all the AC stuff under the hood and leave the box alone. The heat will still work.
How do I clean my vents and etc on my 1990 Chevy caprice classic. It doesn't blow hard from the farthest left and right vents.
You need to check that the vent doors are moving inside your dash. Most likely vacuum operated so make sure they are getting proper vacuum and moving as they should. You can hear them moving as you slide the selector so make sure all is working first. You might have a mouse next up in there too. Just need to start taking things apart.
How do u fix the part that was broken for the heater cable
If you are talking about the little off off the heater box door, it pulls out. I plan to do a video on the HVAC system.
How would you replace the blend door control arm? The one that was broken when you moved it?
The arm fits into a slot in the to of the box so you have to pull it up through the slot. Turn the arm as you pull up and it will find the slot on its own and come out. I plan to do a video on this.
Do they sell aftermarket a/c system that bolt up that's smaller?
Vintage air
Yeah my heater box and blew and is leaking coolant so this is going to be a fun day or two for me.

I don't know what kind of body is my 64 impala. Could you take a video on how to remove the heater core from the inside. I'm trying to get the a/c and heater to work. Thanks Sir
The heater core can only be removed from the outside on a Gbody. Not sure about a 64 Impala.
are the egine harness and ac/heat harness that runs from the firewall to the relay to ac compressor the same for the gm cars in 80s?
Gbody AC/Heat harnesses are the same through out the years the Engine harness is different by year and by engine type for the most part especially in the later years where GM ties the AC into the computer
So I could get a harness from a b body caprice?
sorry i mean the harnesses are the same amoung like cars, Gbody to Gbody and Bbody to Bbody and so on.

It could be a few things with your blower motor. Plugs under the hood that lead to the blower motor and relay corrode and go bad or your dash switch is bad. Not sure what you mean by air blowing out of the box.

If you are local to norther ohio i can sell you one to be picked up.

Marion Walker then you have a stuck vent inside the dash or the selector is not distributing vacuum to that vent servo. You will need to pull the selector out and find out if vacuum is getting to each servo when you move the selector.
Classic G-Body Garage what's this vacuum looking thing b hind the gloves box to the right toward the fender
If I remove the heater box how do I still have heat what do I need to do to put heat back in the car please tell me how
You need a NON AC box that has heat only.
Very helpful video!
Thanks for watching!
I have an 83 Monte. Getting water on passenger side floor. Water is clear. No antifreeze. How to drain heater box?
Heater box is most likely fine, its the gasket that seals the box to the firewall.
Or the flap on bottom of box in engine compartment
yor videos are great and informative. Would yu be willing to show us how to plate off the firewall?
just what I needed!
awesome
That cable on the heater controls is really impossibly easy to break and the same for the back of the vacuum lines. Never knew then how to get around that.
Parts are over 30 years old so you just have to be careful.
Looking for a g body 1984 Buick regal 3.8 v6 engine wiring harness
join classic gbody garage on facebook and ask there.
Working on a 85 regal 231 3.8 can't put the last spark plug back in it's too narrow for me to screw it in with my hand
ask someone to help who has smaller hands. Its possible to get in there if you got the old one out.
Cut an access in the inner fender.
How do we cover it now ?
Plates are available
Anyone know if it’s okay to just cut the condenser harness
If you never want to use your heat again sure.
Can we see a vid on how to put a just heater in now
I can do that at some point but need a cart to do this on.

Can someone please answer this question for me....if a old school comes with the a/c deleted and it's sealed up with the metal plate is there a possible way of reopening/cutting the original hole to have the a/c put back in its original place or is it not worth going through all of that work?
yeah totally possible
You can reinstall the system. Just undo what someone else put there.
1985 Monte Carlo. beltline and I can't get me passenger door to open from inside

I want to remove the A/c box but still have the heater? what needs to be bought for this? Thank great explanation and Video of what is needed to remove this piece of crap box.
x-2! I still need a heater, but don't want the ac stuff
Scott Curry your going to have to remove it all . re-install the air conditioning..that will involve removing the refrigerant and replacing it,
Scott Curry sorry I mean that for the other comment here, same idea though for you .gotta remove it all then re-install the heter core luckily that is easier than re-installing the air conditioning
William Seemann your going to have to remove it all . re-install the air conditioning..that will involve removing the refrigerant and replacing it.. if you have no experience with a/c system do your research and if you have the money to buy or rent the specialty tools like the gauges hoses and vaccum pump and intermediate level mechanic can do it .my tip with ac systems is take everything apart clean it with a pressure washer make sure everything is DRY !!! any mostire will givr you problems.re -assemble with NEW lubed o-rings and you should have nice cold air for years ...there are great videos by Eric the car guy, scannerdanner, chrisfix ect.. good luck
Remove it but a heat only with blowers like what they use in limousines I work at a limo shop and this is how I'm going to do my malibu
helpful video man

I appreciate the suggestion however each Gbody based on year and engine type is different. Now if you are referring to the vacuum lines that run the AC system dash vents, I do have plans for that. Thanks again and for watching.

I watched and commented on your video.
Think I can get it out with the 468 still stuffed in..lol. ?
Big blocks fit into a Gbody no problem. You just need to watch what valve covers you run.
Why can't I just give you my 85 el Camino to work on lol
if you live close you can. I am in ohio.
Haha I appreciate that but I'm all the way in Connecticut!
SURELY you wouldn't leave chrome Cutlass rally wheels on a parts car!!
Yep, scrapped the car with the full set on it. They were in nice shape too! No, I pulled them off. Thanks for watching.
Great video Brian.
