I love the rawness in clips like this. One of the reasons I love the butterfly acapella version, it's so raw (and she pours her emotions into every word). I wish she would do more vocally underproduced tracks like those, it's one of the things I appreciate about the emancipation album, (by vocally underproduced I don't mean to say that other tracks are vocally edited or auto tuned, I'm referring to stripped down songs where she doesn't worry about them sounding 'flawless' or 'perfect', ones where she just opens her mouth and lets her emotions soar. Do you know what I think has damaged Mariah's voice? Trying to sing higher than her natural range. She said she did it to make her songs sound better, but I think its strained her natural voice. I don't know why she doesn't create new versions of her old hits for her concerts. It would sound better in her current voice.

NO, Mariah's songs are still within her tessitura (in her prime at least). These vocally demanding songs would have been very damaging to her voice but we need to consider the fact that Mariah's vocal technique is great for the most part. I think that if we go with your theory , her vocal deterioration should have gradually happened over the years - but no, the decline was abrupt from 1996 to 1997. I don't think it was the whistles either. Considering that it's still pretty much intact nowadays.
