Marty M. A vast majority of artists do but not all. Whitney, up till her death did many of her songs in one take and so did MJ. The talent bar has drastically declined with the advancement of technology so people would rather use it. There aren’t a lot who can do it in one take but they are out there
krazyboi42 I definitely agree with your point. If I may add something: Whitney and MJ recorded differently from Mariah. Those two had songs that were difficult, yes, but the melodies and phrases were designed to be sung by a human voice. A VERY good one, but they worked on stage. Mariah writes her songs for the sake of the music - she adds layers, riffs, and runs because she feels that they're necessary to her art. She's not a stage artist by nature and her songs (and their general inability to be sung) reflect that. The three of them, at their best, were about equal vocalists, but recorded differently, and that's cool. Just realize that comparing them is a little...weird.
Marty M. I can’t say that I know much about Whitney’s recording process outside of that she mostly did single take songs but I know that MJ dove into that same layering process at a time. He was always experimenting with different ways to record once he went solo like, for example, when he recorded we are the world. And Honestly I wouldn’t put Mariah in the same league of singing as MJ and Whitney. She’s incredible don’t get me wrong. She easily put most other careers to shame with her vocals, especially back in her prime, but I don’t think she was quite as good as them. Not by like a lot but still

It's some computer program where they strip away all instruments and isolate the vocals.
