If you've ever lost someone really important, it often doesn't feel real, and it feels like that person will just show up outta nowhere or walk thru the door at any moment.
So crazy that it actually happened that way for this family.
They call it reality warp syndrome. When my Dad got a stroke, I went to the hospital and came back knowing my Dad will never be the same, as I stood in my garage I realized my life was never gonna be the same it was night time at that point, all of a sudden I felt my body time traveled into day time and I saw my Dad just walking around. I thought I was in some sort of Virtual Reality. But I snapped out of it, when I tried hugging him and realized I was hugging nothing. I started crying right after. Basically my brain was trying to cope by processing fictional memories to myself feel better.
@@AllenHanPRhey bro, I wanted to tell you that I had a similar experience. My dad died when I was young. One day, he called me from the kitchen window to wash my hands for lunch. I ran inside but, he wasn’t there. I hugged the air in the spot where he was. Your story reminded me of mine. I’m a logical and skeptical person but I always have to wonder if some part of his spirit was truly there or it was just a coping mechanism created by our brains. It seemed so real.
So true. I lost my mom almost exactly a year ago. I still sometimes feel like she is going to come home and that this is all a horrible dream. Sadly I know better. I was home with her and found her unresponsive.
Same thing happened when my mother passed. I was at hospital when she passed, I saw her body at the memorial and I still believed my dreams when she told me she had just been on vacation
There IS NO nowhere!
At least they admitted their mistake. Some dont have enough integrity to do that.
Well, the family would've found out when he came home from rehab, so they really didn't have much choice but to tell the truth.
Yes, and it looks like they added more measures. Still crazy how ready they were so ready to cremate
yea that should be the most concerning about this, especially after the story about the mississippi jail, its up to almost 700 bodies now@@Edgarto156
Come on.what when he is released
This is just beyond crazy somebody needs to pay for this. This is $1 million lawsuit.
I hope her cousin is able to find his way back to good health and maintain his sobriety.
What a terribly sad story!!!
🙏🏻
That’s not her cousin. It’s a clone.
@@rongooden6545 That's the same thing you clowns said about Obama, Biden, Trump and George Bush.
Sad? A dead person came back to life! How is that sad? This might be the single greatest thing to ever happen! This is the closest we're going to get to an actual resurrection!
This event will also serve as a lesson for this young man. He will realize that he died and was given a second chance. This young man also gets to see how life was for everyone after his death and how it affected people. This is like a real life, A Christmas Carol and it happened around Christmas! How much more positive can this be?
See, this is the problem with society.... People see something like this and they immediately believe that it's sad and negative. No one bothers to try and see the positive and beauty in this event. Believe me, if you let yourself see it, there is a positive takeaway in this story.
@@rongooden6545 oh stop it! 🙄🤦
Are they serious? You need like two forms of identification to open up a bank account. They couldn’t just double check before they devastated a family?
That's exactly what I'm saying. They had the information there; they just didn't look for it!!
To top it off, they have absolutely no idea who they cremated. They're lying when they say the family asked for privacy.
They had IDs with his photo on them, shoulda been the first and obvious thing
@@style3804 what a concept. We get temporary ones here when we get a new license. It a piece of paper with your name and general description.
@@GK222_ I’m sure. This screams lawsuit and some people don’t do autopsies or cremation for religious purposes or have special ceremonies. It’s so messed up.
This must have felt like a twilight episode for her cousin. He went to get clean and when he came out it was like he got to witness the outcome of if he had made the opposite decision. It’s sad that anyone died but I’m glad he got help and can live a better life.
Like Sliding Doors but with addiction instead of a rom-com.
Brings new meaning to the expression, “getting a second chance.”
Yea dude for sure. It's scary. I hope he woke up
I hope he realizes that he is on Borrowed Time now.. and he should do something for others in his life…
@@artmosley3337 sounds like he’s doing that right now, for himself and thus for his family. He got himself into treatment and if he’s been there for months or longer, it sounds like he’s sticking with it and doing well. I hope that he has the grace to give himself a pat on the back for all of that hard work instead of the alternative of remaining in a paralyzed state of rumination and regret… that is the only way forward. I’m now pursuing my medical degree at 44, switching careers after having completed my bachelors approx. 20 years ago, to (God willing) become a practicing physician in this specific field b/c my loved one’s and my lives have been touched by addiction and I have seen how treatment can work if it’s available when someone is ready for it. We must have empathy for one another, IMHO, whether it’s addiction, cancer, diabetes…They are all diseases, and they are all potentially and/or eventually fatal if left untreated.. 💕🙏🏼
I am so proud of him for getting clean. Having 8 years shows that with all the death and addiction recovery still exists in the world.
The hardest part of quitting an addiction is staying quit. Sobriety lasts exactly as long as it lasts.
Imagine you thought you lost a loved one forever and then one day they showed up alive. I lost my brother 2 years ago so I know how painful it is to lose someone. It must be so surreal for his family. But I feel really bad for the family of the deceased. All this time they had no idea he was dead and all they got was his ashes.
That would have been some shock… if instead of getting a call from the Coroner’s office her “dead” cousin just showed up at the door 😱. I’m glad he has a second chance at life by going to rehab, I’m glad she has her family member back… and I feel for the other family who didn’t get the news in time for a proper goodbye 😢
I never got to see my brothers body, and because of the marines I lived states away from him. For years I always thought he was just back home 😕
I’m sorry for your loss, my friend ❤
My condolences
@@nancycalderon188what second chance he never died
They would have know if they actually to review the body, like a loving and caring family would have
That’s ridiculous!! How can the mortuary go ahead with cremation without any family member around? That’s not the right way for the deceased to go.
@@JavaZombie didn't watch the video I see XD
Bodies don't stay 'fresh' forever. They can decompose rapidly and there is only so much space at the coroner's office at one given time. Tyler's ID must have gotten stolen. Am glad this coroner's office went as far to match up fingerprints.
@@JavaZombie😂😂😂
@@JavaZombie But no family confirmed identity. Usually they have someone look at the deceased to be sure, or at the very least check dental records or dna
It’s not uncommon with drug overdoses due to the high number of drug overdose cases, families either abandoned them because of their addiction or can’t afford to claim due to poverty, someone dying on the streets of Portland are likely from a different state have and have family that won’t come all that way to claim them. Drug addiction rips families apart
wow! just imagine FaceTiming with someone you thought was dead months ago
Just imagine not getting a call, then he just shows up at the door!😳
😂
facetiming with someone you thought was dead seconds ago
Until she realizes it was a deepfake.
Why is fingerprinting/DNA/dental records NOT being used for all post mortem identifications? Anybody could be carrying around anyone’s government issued IDs. Literally anyone.
Usually, the ID has a picture they can cross reference. Fake IDs aren’t rare, though
He may have looked like him. Records aren't always available
All they care about is the money they get from selling his body fluids.
Word I feel like DNA should always be definitive form of identification for a body, and if that can’t be established then you need to notify the family of the ID card and have them come and make a positive ID, like what the heck
Those tests all cost money and no mortuary is going to spend that on some guy who died in the gutter. They contacted the family (the family related to the person they thought who died) and the family didn't care to see him, not even to positively identify his body.
When my brother died back in 2022 down in Florida, I made that 1000 trip To make sure that he actually died and identify him it was one of the most difficult things to do but that was the only way I knew he was actually dead, because I still thought in my heart of hearts being on that airplane that he was still alive, and they had the wrong person
I lost a cousin to addiction. I had talked to him a month before and I didn’t even know he was an addict. The whole town showed up at the funeral like he was a celebrity. It was all family and friends. The whole thing felt unreal. He was only 2 yrs older than me.
I was born within a week of him and it hurts me to know he’s struggling. I really wish him the best.
This story is actually helping me... when my 22 yr old daughter died her husband went all out for a viewing and i hated it because my daughter was very beautiful and seeing her like that messed me up...i post on her Facebook (its still up) all the time telling her I just wish she would come home..... knowing deep down she wont ...if all there was were ashes i would still have hope ...

I can’t imagine what terrible pain you are feeling. Please take care of yourself and I hope you are surrounded with friends and family in your time of need. Sending love and prayers from Texas.
Same. I still message my dad and baby sister on fb. My siblings still call my dad's number and listen to our dads voicemail to hear him talk ❤

So like, did she return the ashes or were they like "Nah, you can keep them."?
So many questions...
I bet the ME asked for the return of the ashes to give to the presumptive “correct” grieving family.
That is an expensive urn they are showing.
Know her personally, she decided she might keep them to sue, they won’t tell her who is in the urn🤷♀️
How can he not have been identified?
Yes if they had come to identify the body this would not have happened.
Didn't they say that the deceased guy had the cousins wallet and ID, so didn't they check to see if the photo matched the dead guy? Very sloppy work.
@@jennysmith38 Right but usually wouldn't they still have the loved ones identify. Yes they should have been able to compare the photo to the actual body
@@jennysmith38They said temporary ID… depending on the state, that could just mean info printed on a regular paper to carry around until your real one comes in the mail & if there’s a picture it’s jus printed in black & white.. I think that’s why they say now they require fingerprints when someone has a temporary ID
@@calise7988 thank you for that information
You shouldn’t be able to definitively identify a victim solely based on an ID found in their pocket.
Faking death is so common in movies and tv shows that when something like this happens in real life, our shock factor is much subdued, yet the effect it has on those families must be absolutely devastating. My heart goes out to the other family who probably just recevied notice about the death of their loved one out of the blue.
It’s normal in USA because their systems are from the previous century. They basically have no idea who’s alive and not. It’s ridiculously easy to continue using dead people’s information. While in other countries once a person is dead, their “social security number” and other personal details become invalid. But not in the good ol USA. During the pandemic they sent out the 1200 dollar stimulus checks to dead people and even foreign students who left the country years earlier. It’s pretty ironic considering how obsessed they are with protecting their boarders
Faking death? Where did you get that? It was a mistaken identity. The actual guy was in rehab.
@@plumdutchessI think it was a faked death but not by him. Poor training as well on the staff.
If the state of Oregon only goes by a drivers license than it’s easy to make mistakes like this.
They had nothing else to go on at the time
@@gypsybaby3196why not fingerprints
this!!! yikes
I think the coroner should. Even to get a temporary ID I'm pretty sure you need to give your thumb prints first. If they didn't have the correct person, the prints wouldn't have matched. Total incompetence. The medical examiner needs to be fired.
It was an accident
Bro took just kidding to a whole new level
No more internet for me today I'm done.
Great news for her. Bad news for that other boy’s family. It happens a lot, but it’s usually in violent trauma deaths like bombings and whatnot. That marathon bombing had people sitting at the bedside of somebody else’s daughter whose parents had already been told she was dead, but that was actually the daughter of the people thinking their daughter had survived. They were just so badly injured that they couldn’t tell until the living one woke up from her coma and told them who she was. At least I think that how they found out.
I think you're confused, this didn't happen in relation to the marathon bombing, it was a car accident;
"Mistaken Identity tells the unprecedented story of Laura Van Ryn and Whitney Cerak: one buried under the wrong name, and the other in a coma being cared for by the wrong family. Five lives were lost in a tragic car accident, and the sole survivor was rushed to the hospital, where she remained in a coma for five weeks."
That's another reason why I've always said, "I don't trust cremation." You really don't know whose ashes have been returned to you.
Outside of the US, people are present at the cremation, and given the option to watch and start the cremation machine.
👍 100%
@@codename495YOU ARE ALLOWED TO DO THAT IN THE US TOO
So you'd rather rot in the ground?? Wow
@@dave46459What’s wrong with that? That’s the natural order, all life returns to the earth.
The medical examiner's follow up letter stated, "whoops, did I do that?"
He pulled an erkyl.
I bet they have no idea who the deceased person is because how would they be able to identify at this point? And did they reimburse the family for the cost of cremation and the urn?
Yup, I'm wondering if the "respect for privacy" is to hide the fact that they don't know who it is & so haven't been able to notify anyone!
Probably, they took fingerprints but cremated the body well before they were run through the system.
@@lauraelliott6909 I hope so, or took photos or something.
Insurance covers cremation, the family don't normally pay for that. As far as identification that was my thought as well, I wonder if DNA can survive the cremation process? Best bet for that would be a tooth.
@@thamertanner5448 I seriously doubt he had life insurance..And I'm not sure about the DNA surviving...maybe a small bone fragment was left also..
It's so ridiculous and sad that things like this still happen... I feel so sorry for both of the families involved.😟
Bittersweet. Glad he's alive. Sorry they were led to believe their loved one was deceased.
Is it normal for nobody to show up and confirm the body? It kinda surprises me that nobody showed to even check the identity of their "loved" one.
I hope this young adult will leave drug rehab and have a great life and spend a lot of time with a family who loves him!
Somebody, stole his ID!
😳 ~ Just imagine if The supposed “dead guy“ would’ve showed up at his family’s house after rehab. Imagine the shock that could possibly stop your heart.
Ugh! What a horrible thing to happen! Praying for all involved ! ❤🙏🏻😭
This story is crazy
Exactly just wow
When you go into intense rehab you often can't contact your family and aren't allowed online. So there was absolutely no way for them to know that it wasn't him.
Good news for this woman and her family that their loved one is still alive. But I cannot fathom going through that grief, but luckily they got to feel relief and happiness he's still alive.
I hope whoever is in that urn, their identity is found and their loved ones contacted.
This is a tragic situation for one family although a happy one for the one interviewed. But I think the most positive thing about this case was when they called the woman, they already had a plan of action in place to prevent this from happening again & two more sets of families experiencing this same trauma. I like the way they realized their system was flawed and instead of playing a blame game or making excuses, they came up with a solution. Kudos.
Thank God he’s alive. What a crazy mix up.
We were told my oldest brother took his life, but no one in the family-all local, saw the body before cremation. We wondered if he faked his death, but I guess we’ll never know.
That's crazy well good thing he is alive. I would've freaked out about the ashes I had. So what do she do with the ashes? I hope the cousin stays sober. So this won't happen again.
Yeah who is in the cremation vase then? 😅
Did the deceased steal Tyler Chase’s wallet? If so, he should get some of the blame for the mistake.
I wouldn’t sue. I would be grateful that my relative was still alive.
If it's downtown Portland and both were drug users, its likely it was stolen and he had no way to get a new license.
You know they are all going to sue. Both families and the guy thats alive. The suing is out of control!
Imagine getting that call that a loved one was found dead and not one single person in the family making time to go identify the body.
Thats pretty crazy!!!
He went in to get clean and came out to a death certificate. This is so sad, but it gives hope to others who only received ashes, and no other proof that their loved one is gone.
Who’s ashes am I in possession of ?😵💫🥺🫣
She should have gone down to identify the body in the first place. What is really more important in your life than that?
If family cannot make the trip to the body, what about FaceTime with the body?
Sending all the positive vibes to the families and to Tyler. Hope he finds his way out of the darkness and into recovery. ❤
Who’s the dead person in the vase though?
They have no ideah
@@Loveabounds. It was some guy who stole the wallet of the guy who they THOUGHT WAS DEAD
Sorry this is just laziness on the medical examiner’s office. I work in this field and if the person has an ID at the scene of death, and still can’t be verified, we still search and verify through dental and fingerprint analysis. And we definitely don’t cremate till we get positive confirmation.

I am glad I saw my sister when she overdosed in august. Despite the trauma and stress its left me with, This was a death I didn't have to struggle with accepting...
even 15 years later, I feel like ill see my dad come through the door again...
They probably won't tell the real person's identity because they have no idea who they cremated.
Tragic for the other family! I wonder how they even realized their mistake. How DID did this come to light? Probably when the rehab center was told medicaid wouldn't cover it because he was listed as deceased!!
That’s wild , hopefully the expirience changes y’all’s life positively, cuz I can tell for the thousands of us I wish that my loved one would come back .
Human error is possible everywhere. I worked for hospice & I know odd things happened there as well.
Fingerprint is should be done regardless of photo ID because NOBODY looks like their ID!
That is a real blessing two fold for the family though..he is alive and getting help with his sobriety and grief...i am heartbroken for the family that the other young man that it truly was.
This is incredible! Very happy for all of them 🤗
Why didn’t they require an ID of the body?
This will be a awkward family meeting.
So basically… they don’t know who the heck they cremated and need more time to fix their negligence and ask for privacy while processing the cover up.
Holy crap! So sad for both families.
That's not a mistake, that's incompetence.
Should have checked fingerprints BEFORE Notifying the family, before cremation. THAT should of been the way, LONG before now.. The other family told Months later? Ugh.
How can the other family be told? Too late to do fingerprinting or ID from dental work.
This is sad but by the exact standards the individual was in the rehab so that actually is really good news and hopefully the guy will completely rehab and he will no longer be a drug addict and the death of the unknown individual will serve as a reminder to help that literally could have been him that died
Imagine if she didn't get a call from the medical examiner and he just showed up at the door randomly one day
That’s horrible!
I understand using government ID for the additional identification but shouldn’t something more reliable like fingerprints, dental, or DNA be used as confirmation? IDs can be misplaced or stolen. The other things can’t.
The mortuary bears no responsibility in this situation; it's the State that's at fault. The confusion did not occur at the Funeral Home. The mortuary received explicit confirmation of identification from the Medical Examiner. It's crucial to have the Next of Kin's signature for cremation, and the family likely only signed a waiver at the Mortuary, trusting the State's positive identification. The cremation proceeded accordingly. Now, the State is acknowledging the issue due to a missing body, which has been traced back to the Medical Examiner. As a Funeral Director, I've witnessed such occurrences more frequently than one might expect.
Maybe it's both.
Oh man! I am so happy he is alive, but my GOD what a bungled mess!
That’s freaking crazy 😢😢😢
Praise God Tyler is still alive and able to get his life together🙌🏾🙌🏾 Condolences to the other family🙏🏾🙏🏾

Poor guy. Now he has to go back to living in Oregon.
I thought they at least check fingerprints even if they find an ID🤷🏼♀️
Wow! Did the deceased guy look like him though?
Somebody obviously didn't look too closely :(
Every time I see the make and color of the car my grandma used to drive it just brings me great sadness.
Speechless on this one.
This so sad and disappointing. It is also too familiar and common in San Francisco and the bay area and also Los Angeles Skid row. Many homeless people died alone without family members or friends. Typically no one would claim a homeless family member unless that person was killed by a government or city official.😢🙏💔 So heartbreaking.
lol did it never occur to people who work in that field that anyone can just steal someone's id especially if they've been found to overdose?
That was crazy just imagine your in another state taking a holiday after you return you see your family crying all of a sudden they look at you in shock! If it were me I would be confused and happy at the same time and rest in peace
That's terrible.
Cremation Crew:
“Oh my bad dude I musta switched the name tags when I dropped my snickers my bad”
Also Cremation Crew:
“If it wasn’t him then who tf did we cremate?”
Probably some unidentified homeless man 💀 rip to whoever starts looking for that person, literally nothing left
Imagine how he felt when he found out they sold all his stuff lol
Blessings. Everyone that's every lost someone they love PRAYS for a moment like this. Please, cherish the moments.
So, the cremated person was never identified since it was already cremated?
It’s terrible to have happened, but I can understand it. They found a body, and it’s reasonable to believe the ID found with it belonged to that person. They then tried to contact THAT family to confirm identification, to no avail. I mean they ultimately found a COUSIN to give the remains to, who didn’t even know the guy was in drug rehab. They clearly logged the prints of the deceased, but it probably took those three months to do the match (I’m sure it was one of hundreds of prints cases being processed). As for the cremation without positive visual identification, well you can’t store bodies forever waiting for someone to come looking. The body might require storage for decades or just indefinitely. And the police don’t have a database of dental records to look through either. They had to go on what they had available.
No this is not acceptable. How do you know they actually tried?
Humans make errors. This was a big one. Glad he's alive & well. 🙏❤️
That is insane

I feel it's the lack of communication also, on both the family & morgue part. The family should've went and seen was it actually their family being cremated.. IF NOT THEN WHO IS IT ????
