    I've had countless high-end guitars over the years. I played this guitar yesterday and it blew me away. Stunningly balanced between the entire frequency spectrum, perfect for essentially ANY genre...and the selling point for me was that even for incredibly fast fingerpicking, every single not was perfectly heard - AMAZING articulation! The price point means absolutely nothing. Taylor happened upon a seriously magical combination of all things glorious with this one! :)

      Watch the Driftwood guitars video where they cut guitars in half and look at the build quality. In the affordable price ranges, Taylor destroys the other manufacturers, including Martin, hands down. It completely changed my mind about which guitar to purchase.

  • @sfgators

    I went to GC and played the 214CEK versus the 314CE versus the Martin D11e. I wanted to believe that the Martin would win, but I was surprised by the 214CEK. Yes, the 214CEK has a layered back and sides, but believe it or not, the sound was alive and very inspiring. I don't know if it was the strings or what? But I just wasn't inspired by the D11e. It felt dead. I didn't like the 314CE because it was too twangy. (My primary guitar is a Taylor 320 all solid Mahogany top, all solid Sapele sides/back.)

    • @festushaggen2563

      I had a similar experience. Went to a Sam Ash today and picked up a Martin D-12E Koa. I like Martins, have a couple of low end models and was expecting great things. It was pretty good. Then I saw the Taylor 214CE-K next to it and decided to do a comparison just for kicks. I always choose Martin between the 2 brands.
      Not this time. The Taylor made the Martin sound quieter and muffled. I was shocked how much louder, clearer the Taylor sounded and how much more I liked it. It’s also $200 less.
      Now I’m having to figure out how much I have to trade in and pay to get it. I swear sometimes I shouldn’t go into music stores and pick up guitars for this reason. Oh well. 🤷🏼‍♂️

      I suggest you play both. I played each for about 1 hour and quite honestly the build quality on both is amazing. But I found myself really enjoying the tone of the 214ce especially the highs. The 314ce had great balance with lows and highs for the price point. I couldn't justify the extra 1100 for the 314ce. So I walked out with the 214 and couldn't be happier.

    I'm not familiar with the term 'layered' koa. Does that mean 'laminated'? In any case this is a nice guitar with plenty of tone and volume. Seems like Taylor is stepping ahead, with the new bracing system, etc. Always very well-made, but sounding better.

    • @williamj1813
      @williamj1813 6 лет назад +1

      Layered is another 'term' for Laminated. This is a nice sounding guitar though. Both of these guys play exceptionally well.. Take care.

    • @rickcar94
      @rickcar94 6 лет назад +2

      There's nothing wrong with laminate back and sides, the guitar handles humidity better than if it was all solid wood and you can't even tell the difference sound wise.

    • @WryGrass100
      @WryGrass100 6 лет назад

      I had guessed that it's 'laminated'. And that's fine. Some of my best friends play laminated guitars :-). My old Red Label Yamaha even has a laminated top, and it sounds fine. One of my mandolins, a Dave Cohen, has walnut back & sides, and has the greatest tone. So, there's a place for all of that.

    • @DJWRailroad
      @DJWRailroad 6 лет назад +5

      According to a high-end woodworker, a finish carpenter who works mostly with exotic, expensive wood, "laminate" may imply a very general term using different quality levels of lamination. For guitars, lamination can include using different materials such as a very thin Rosewood veneer over other cheaper wood or even over Formica or other composite. Taylor uses the term "layered" to differentiate from those less expensive or cheaper processes or methodologies. By using the term "layered" Taylor means to distinguish their guitars with layered backs as using ALL the same wood in the process: E.g. all Rosewood, all Koa, all Sapele, etc. sheets of wood. Taylor as well as Martin and others, have had an increase in counterfeits, with Taylor experiencing the biggest increase over the past several years due to increased popularity of Taylors. Those counterfeits use the lower quality lamination (e.g. very thin Rosewood veneer over a composite material, composite wood, etc).
      Owning one of these 214s (layered Rosewood back, i.e. all sheets of Rosewood) as a knock-around guitar, both the finish woodworker friend and I were amazed at the quality workmanship, very durable back and sides using those layered Rosewood. Also, this lower-end Taylor never ceases to amaze all of us with its great sound.

    • @EveningCrow
      @EveningCrow 6 лет назад +1

      @@DJWRailroad
      Taylor doesn't use all rosewood (now substituted by copafera or koa) in the 100 and 200 laminates. It's a 3 piece laminate of rosewood with poplar sandwiched in the middle if I remember correctly. I think the DLX version did use 3 sheets of rosewood though.

  • @shjhdhah
    @shjhdhah 6 лет назад +3

    very impressed.....and love the price point on this.....but, when he said the sound is "good"....that does not mean "real good" or "great". Will have to hear this one in my hands. Concerned when I do hear Layered (Laminated).....how is it in humidity and what are long term possible issues.

    • @rickcar94
      @rickcar94 6 лет назад +15

      Laminate is actually more stable than solid wood, and handles humidity much better.

      I have one of these 214s (layered Rosewood back, outstanding workmanship) as a knock-around guitar and every fellow guitarist who's picked it up were surprised at its sound, playability, build quality when they heard the price point and that its a Tecate guitar.
