The Jolly Reiver is my project aiming to preserve and promote the forgotten folklore and history of rural Britain. Primarily focusing on folklore and legends, you’ll not find me trying to deconstruct these old stories or trying to rationalise them with science and psychology. Instead I will present them as they were always told by our forebears, and leave the conclusions up to you.

A Fantastic video!! I'm really proud to have worked on this and enjoyed getting a chance to share these stories from my home county with a different audience. This is a great start to a much needed series examining the stories from every corner of Britain! Thank you @TheJollyReiver for giving me an opportunity to be a part of it!

It’s lovely to some some local folklore. The chillington family still own some parts of my village (I enquired to local farmers why they were blocked off). A curious family if I say so. Thanks so much for this, lads! My mum grew up in Bilston and her mum (a very skeptical women) said till the day she died a spirit got into bed with her one night when they lived in a church yard. Maybe the fairies mentioned in the video?

As a Staffycher mon born and bred, I loved this video. Some of the tales, obviously, I knew already, but others are new to me. One small quibble regards the 'hand of glory', which differes from what that term usually means. A dead man's hand, yes, but with wicks of wax and animal fur on each finger. Prepared with various spells and curses, it was believed to aid burglars; they'd recite a spell having lit the wicks and it was believed to put the occupants of the house being burgled into a trance. As for Billie Howe, there's an owd story as sum on 'is mates were gooin' past 'im on the gibbet one night, an' one on 'em called ahrt, askin' 'ow he bist (he was). To which 'e replied, "Cowd an' clammy, yer dom fool, cowd an' clammy. Wodjer think ah'd be?" (Forgive the temptation to lapse into local dialect. )
