I've been using MX for 4 1/2 years now. It's very, very good. I haven't had a Mac for many years, but people who have Macs can sure use your advice, i'm sure.

I use Cairo Dock for a convenient dock to launch from, btw. Works really well.

Yes, I heard about MX Linux from one of your comments and decided to try it.
Thanks for mentioning it because it has replaced Ubuntu as my favorite os.
I downloaded Kdenlive video editor and may start using MX to edit video too. Just have to get familiar with it.

Cairo Dock would be good for use in the Mac. Makes MX look like Mac OS.

Ah, i don't remember telling you about MX but i'm glad i did and you like it. I find it very good - and the Cairo Dock makes it easier to launch applications, too.

Wow, big time coincidence! I just downloaded and tried putting MX Linux on my desktop computer yesterday. I was running Linux Mint 19.3, so tried to boot MX from a zip drive. For some reason my computer wouldn't recognize it on the zip so it never booted up. I ended up just upgrading to Mint 20 instead. I think the issue is having older UEFI bios. Anyway, I really enjoyed your video.

    • @lukeFugate
      @lukeFugate  4 года назад

Yes the UEFI bios system has to be configured just right to boot from USB. I'll try it out on the Windows computer I have and see if maybe I can get it to work. I'll let you know. What brand of computer is it?

It makes my heart happy that you use Linux! I have a PC and was dual-booting Windows and Linux mint. But my Linux mint install got all jacked up. After spending hours and hours trying to fix it, yes I think it was a UEFI problem, I decided to just wipe Windows completely off of my PC, reinstall Linux mint, an update from there. Once I've got a really good working copy of Linux on a computer I hardly ever use Windows any. I really love Linux mint because it's very user-friendly. Never tried Linux MX. Is it easy to use and update? Are the command line entries about the same? You know when you have to type in stuff like sudo apt-get.

Yes, I like Linux. If kdenlive works well for me I may not use Mac very much at all now. MX Linux is easy to use. It notifies you immediately when there is an update and allows you to do the update with just a click and a quick entry of your password. It is about the same as Mint as far as command line interface. The same commands for both. It also uses your computers resources very efficiently and makes it much faster.

@@lukeFugate I may have to check that out then! I've used a version of meant for so many years that it may be hard for me to change. Then maybe I can partition off just for the Linux MX and give it a try. Linux really is a very good operating system. there's a learning curve but once you've got it, you got it! And you're right it boots up so fast and run so much better than Windows! I've never used a Mac so I don't know how to compare with that.

I never knew that you could do this with a mac computer. Really interesting how you did this, I learned something new about computers. Awesome video again as always Luke. 👍

Great video. I guess grub doesn't work with macos? Maybe there is another boot manager available?

One of my facepalms moments were when I was trying to install a distro and I forgot to configure partitions to redirect it to the new one (hope that wasn't confusing), so when I exited out and loaded up my MacOSX, it was that distro. So yeah, I had to take another look: thank you so much!

Yes it will. It is close to the same, I may have to make a video showing how to do the same on a Windows computer.

@@lukeFugate you can do this by just going to the windows store and typing "ubuntu" and installing! so easy! runs within a virtualized environment.

nice video. how can I boot Linux without holding the option key? I mean, how can I make it boot Linux first. thanks in advance

I haven't tried it myself but I think you go to startup disk and tweak some settings there are videos out there that teach it I need to know so I can get it to boot to mac instead of straight to windows
