    I love your quiet, patient, relaxed lessons. It's like having a brother walk you through. I ran into problems however due to my outdated and limited knowledge. Didn't realize I was at the "so ignorant I don't know how ignorant I am" stage. I couldn't create numerous partitions as you did because Windows already had three primary partitions on the drive. That forced me to learn about MBR/GPT/BIOS/EUFI. Last time I set up a computer there was only MBR and BIOS. Windows is making it so easy now, I haven't needed to get under the hood for years. I also created a problem for myself when creating the root and home. It resulted in an MX login screen loop I couldn't get out of because it couldn't find the home (I think). At any rate, just wanted to say thank you for laying it out so clearly. When it goes wrong for me now, I at least know what questions to ask Google. With previous failed Linux experiments I had no idea even where to start!

    Dude, I have tried dual-booting so many times, and the feeling of GRUB sort of just "eating" my Windows install eventually, or Windows just racing right past whatever boot menu should be showing up has always been... oh boy. I've always known that there was *something* going on and it wasn't the simple, no-complication thing people make it out to be. So thank you SO MUCH for really going in-depth on it when no one else seems to bother.
    Why the hell is the MX Linux community specifically so doggedly committed to documentation? And why can't everyone be like this?

      Oh My God, this sounds horrible for anyone to have.. I hope you can get the issue soon (which you probably did seeing from your comment!!), and i hope it doesn't happen again with you or anyone for that matter!! Oh my, computers can really sometimes be confusing... Like not too long ago, our computer was infected with a STOP/DJVU virus, and i didn't know it, so, as the virus had stripped functionality from our laptop, like the Start Menu not opening up anymore and the Notification Center not openimg up too, i kept trying all of the fixes i could find on the internet... I couldn't even do a repair install from the hard drive ( and i thought all the USB's we had at the time were infected with the virus), so i basically decided to just go all out and reset it. It took a long time as it has an AMD A9-9425 Radeon R5 CPU, which is quite slow, but i worked!!! It booted back into Windows 10 and most of it's problems were solve : The Start Menu would open again along with the Notification Center opening too!!! Windows Update also worked again!!! By the way, i discovered our PC had a virus because of me accidentally opening file explorer and stumbling around some greyed out files. Normally this is quite normal (you just have set File Explorer to Show Hidden Files), i noticed a README.TXT that basically said i needed money to recover my encrypted files. That's how i knew it was, atleast partially, the virus's fault. So i did a reset from the Settings app and fortunately, the virus seems to have been gotten deleted.
      Long story short, computers can be so confusing, but sometimes a good reset or re-install fixes stuff!! (a repair upgrade is also worth a try as that option gives you the opportunity to keep your programs and files, but some apps maay get deleted. For me, a repair upgrade just wouldn't work, so i did a full reset and it all went good. A Fresh Start is also an option, althought keep in mind it might delete all of your programs, files and apps, so back up your files and programs if you need them beforehand!)
      Anyways, keep it up, and i hope all of our computer lifes go good for now!

    20:19 - In the menu there's an option called "Partition Configuration". Clicking that makes it possible to configure an extra partition on the flashed USB drive where you can store loose files on which is very handy in live environments as when the ISO is mounted and used to run the OS it's not possible to access from within that environment. I use it for KeePassXC and KeePassXC database but also other helpful documents, like how to use grub etc.

    • @RedSntDK
      @RedSntDK Год назад

      17:19 In Rufus one can change "persistent partition size" to reserve room for another partition during flashing as well. This feature is also needed for MX Linux and AntiX persistence feature.

  • @RedSntDK
    @RedSntDK Год назад

    30:23 - A neat trick to both move and resize windows is to press and hold ALT then left click and hold with your mouse or on your touchpad buttons and that will allow you to then drag the window around. If you hold ALT and right click you get the resize functionality which is very handy. It works by approximation, so to resize from the lower right corner your cursor needs to be somewhat near it to guess that's the corner you want to resize from.
    Once you've activated either grab or resize you can let go of ALT, just keep your mouse or touchpad button pressed for those actions and let go when you're satisfied with the result.
    This is very practical on lower resolution monitors, like what I had to battle with on my old 2009 Asus EEE PC, a tiny 1024*600 netbook.

    Hi since I've learnt the very thorough lessons from your channel which I have placed my complete faith and confidence on what you do. I was just wondering whether you could do a (btrfs) complete tutorial here, in particular the way how to interact with (timeshift) for restoration/reinstallation, together with how to create (timeshift) into USB if possible etc… as I have watched various other channels' explanations but none of them I am confident with. Thanks in advance.

    • @StaempunkTV
      @StaempunkTV  2 года назад +1

      @reflexsamurai958 Thanks for your comment! I'll certainly put your suggestion on my list of potential videos to make. These days I actually prefer to use ext4 as I can specify where to save my timeshift snapshots which you can't do with BTRFS. Ext4 may be slower than BTRFS but having the ability to save the snapshots to a separate partition is worth the time.

    Well done! Thank you for a such detailed explanation and especially how to roll back what was done - a very rare scenario on tech videos... but let me ask you:
    1. About OS X (El Capitan) and MX dual booting. Should be the Disk Utility used instead of gparted? It seemed that it wants an additional package from Apple to handle the HPFS.
    2. If you have dealt with OS X & MX Linux dualboot - where GRUB is placed and how to delete it's traces (if I want to wipe out the installed MX) ?

    very helpful but I have some questions b4 doing system changes.
    1. i have set up Ventoy which is working on some of the iso. When downloading Ventoy it gives options windows or Linux. I used windows as I'm on windows 10 pro. Does this choice affect the booting capability? if I remove windows will the flash drive still work in the Linux machine?
    2. I'm planning on changing the windows 10 pro to windows 10 as i have the activation code for the later. I remember many years ago it is preferable or necessary to install windows b4 Linux. Is this true?
    3. Can you do a multi boot (more than 2 say 1 windows and 2 or 3 Linux) instruction video? I find your teaching method very simple to understand compared to others I've found. Does multi systems affect the performance of the machine? I'm running ASUS intel7 gaming laptop few years old now. My C drive 237 GB and DATA D drive 931 GB So if I'm understanding this correctly I shouldn't touch the D drive and partition the C drive only.
    I see you have been quiet for a year so I've downloaded MX 23 and Vanilla OS and Endeavor Galileo (Ghost bsd and Nitrux didnt work for me) is MX23 very different to MX21.
    Its been more than 20 years since I played with computers and built and repaired a few self taught. Paranoid of wrecking this laptop. All answers very much appreciated. Thank you.

    • @StaempunkTV
      @StaempunkTV  Год назад +1

      @edwardpearce9668
      1. It doesn't matter. A Ventoy USB created on a Mac can be used on a Windows PC or Linux etc.
      2. Yep, Windows before Linux as the Windows Installer will overwrite the LInux partitions. If you create seperate partitions you might be able to install Windows to its own partition. I would experiment on an old computer if you aren't sure (that's what I do).
      3. I'll add your suggestion to my list of potential vids. Multi systems don't affect performance as long as each 'OS' has all its partitions close to each other.
      Hope this helps, cheers!

      @hartonpictures5008 Apakah Anda mencoba menyalin file ke partisi Windows atau partisi NTFS yang terpisah? Are you trying to copy files to the Windows partition or a separate NTFS partition?

    • @harton_pictures

      @@StaempunkTV pastisi ntfs itu untuk data dan terpisah dari windows (partisi windows sendiri), partisi data sendiri (ntfs). Partisi linux juga sendiri. Utk copy file partisi ntfs baik pakai os linux atau windows. Anehnya di mint bisa, tapi di mx tidak. Ini masukan utk os mx linux. Karena pengguna tidak butuh monoton dilinux tapi juga multifungsi (copy data ntfs dari windows pakai os linux)

      You may need to reboot into your UEFI settings and move the MX grub bootloader up the hierarchy so it loads before the Windows EFI bootloader.

    I only have 20gb available to shrink n my laptop. Can I install it to 20gb to dual boot to my windows 10? If I can, can you reply in details how to partition the 20gb? I mean root how many? Home how many etc?

    • @StaempunkTV
      @StaempunkTV  3 года назад +1

      20GB should be ok as long as you aren't planning to download lots of files or install many apps.
      Probably the best way would be to follow the partitioning method in the video. When you're in GParted, don't create the DualData partition or the swap partition. Just create one btrfs partition. Apply that and then back in the MX Installer, create the two subvolumes for root (@) and home (@home) using the method in the video. Good luck!

    Awesome as always ! ...ich followed one of your past Videos, to design your MX. I did this inside a VM (Boxen) and "burned" it on a USB Device and made it persistend after.
    So now i run a 256Gb USB LIVE-System of my customiced MX-Linux :-D
    ....but while using the stick gets really hot, ...besides it s a metal stick, which is good bringing the heat away, ...the system is quite laggy after some time, ....so i want it to run from my real SSD besides Windows!? ...which led to this Video :)
    Can i use my already customised LIVE-Persisten-USB MXLINUX ...and integreate it like you advice in this video here, ....or is there a Handicap i didn´t saw jet ?
    I mean: "Is it possible to install from a snapshot, or direktly from my live-system! ?"

    Excellent video, very informative for a newbie like me, would you do a similar video i.e. double boot but with Manjaro (Plasma or Xfce) ?

    • @StaempunkTV
      @StaempunkTV  Год назад

      @erick-rm Great suggestion, I'll put it on the list of potential videos to make. I personally haven't used Manjaro for some time but the process would be pretty much the same as I demonstrate in the video.. After creating room for Manjaro by shrinking your Windows C: partition, boot up the Manjaro installer and create the following partitions: a 512mb FAT32 for the grub, a swap partition equal to your amount of RAM and a Root partition for Manjaro. I think you'd have to create flags and so on too but it isn't difficult to do.

      @@StaempunkTV Thank you for your reply, can you create a sub-volume for root and home just like you did in the MX-Linux video? Just to let you know I went ahead and installed MX-23 in my 2 year old laptop instead of Manjaro Plasma. The latest MX works just fine the way you suggested in your video I have not had any issue, except that the swap partition doesn't mount automatically, I have to do it manually. Still I'm interested in installing Manjaro (or Endeavor OS) along Windows 10 in an old laptop I have just to try it and learn about Linux. Thank you for your videos they are excellent, clear, and informative.

    I finally got MX-21 installed (KDE version) and was happy with it until I wanted to access my online accounts and there is no option in the settings for this. I got my trusty Ventoy usb out and booted up KDE Neon and low and behold online accounts available in the settings so I just installed KDE Neon over MX-21 and honestly, Plasma 5.26 is great. I am not a fan of xfce so it's a shame that what I wanted was not included in the KDE version for some reason. Enjoy your videos though and still a happy subscriber.

    • @StaempunkTV
      @StaempunkTV  Год назад +1

      @lakemarine484 It sounds like your hard-drive has been formatted to the MBR partition table which only allows 4 primary partitions. GPT allows for more but you would have to completely format your hard-drive to format to GPT. Your other option is to create an extended logical partition for the extra partitions you wish to use.

    • @StaempunkTV
      @StaempunkTV  Год назад

      @lakemarine484 I've just created a video on how to format your hard drive using the GPT partition table so you'll be able to create more than 4 partitions although it does entail completely formatting your hard drive. Hope it helps. ruclips.net/video/YTbbtzRDL1U/видео.html

      It should work although I haven't ever done it that way around. To have the option to boot into MX or Windows at startup, you could go into your bios/UEFI and get your computer to boot from the MX bootloader and then when you're in MX, run the command 'sudo update-grub' in Terminal and it'll add a Windows bootloader to your MX grub so you have the option to boot into either at startup.
