    This tutorial is really clear and to the point. I dual booted my Macbookpro-15 by following each step. Thanks for the wonderful work! For people who wonder why people want Archlinux on mac, it is a fantastic way of learning to start with. This is a great tutorial - one of the better Arch tutorials around. I'm obviously doing something wrong because after 5 or 6 attempts I just can't get it working on my MBP Mid 2015 (11,4). If i use the latest kernel - Arch hangs on first boot. If I use the lts kernel the boot entry is never created and I can still only boot MacOS. I have followed both your guide and the 11,x guide on Arch Wiki, and I'm pulling my hair out. I abandoned Ubuntu/Mint on my MBP as it was running too hot (idle 50-60C) even with mbpfan running. I'm going to have to save up for a System 76 machine so that I can run linux on compatible hardware I guess. Macbook just seems to be a real pain when it comes to running any linux distro.

    • @eflinux
      @eflinux  4 года назад +2

      Hi Richard, some people are reporting the lts kernel working better , especially with a 15”. Moreover, tray not to install the intel video driver. Sometimes that causes the problem too.

    • @WhataRichard
      @WhataRichard 4 года назад +1

      @@eflinux I just can't figure out why - when using the lts kernel, and complete the install - there is no option to boot Arch in EFI - only MacOS - I've tried editing the arch.conf PATH (using the PARTUUID of my root directory) I've tried reinstalling the bootloader, I just don't understand what I'm doing wrong, but the option to boot Arch just isn't in the EFI partition post install. If I use the latest kernel during install it seems to work - but of course as soon as I reboot after install, Arch hangs and never boots. I'm ready to say this has beat me.

    • @eflinux
      @eflinux  4 года назад +2

      Have you tried the latest kernel without the intel driver?

    • @WhataRichard
      @WhataRichard 4 года назад

      @@eflinux I think you are probably on to something. I cannot successfully boot the live usb unless I set the nomodeset kernel option. Either that is causing issues with the install, or it is an indicator that indeed there is a conflict with the intel video driver. At this point I think I'd be more willing to make another attempt if I was able to determine that someone else with an 11,4 MBP had success using the latest kernel & skipping the intel video driver.

  • @rivciks5045
    @rivciks5045 Год назад +2

    15:48 you have made a mistake and forgot to remove the "-" as well. The correct entry should have been "default arch*" since you have the "arch.conf" and not the "arch-.conf" in your entries directory. If the entry is misspelled, the efi boot manager won't recognise it and thus won't make it as default boot option.

    Good tutorial. Now in 2023 little out of date, and some things could be made different, like the adding the own picture to the bootmenu and get the plymouth bootloader animation working, and the SDDM login manager as well (only show a mouse cursor). And same time it is little too early as it is for 2014+ Macbooks, where the earlier ones (I am writing this on 2009 and 2011) come with a Broadcome Wi-Fi chip that is not supported out of the box (requires B43 driver, that is in AUR) so installation can't be performed without either RJ45 cable, or then using a Android smartphone tethering (out of the box support).
    As well I would have left out the personal opinion of themes for Plasma desktop.
    Other some things I would consider different is to add a own /home partition. As that is always saving the day as it makes very easy to make a disk backups from it, and then you can switch distribution if wanted without touching home files at all, as it is not so good idea at all to have /home in the same partition as / is or anything else. Same could be said about the swap file to be smarter be a own partition than a file, as then you can even have multiple distributions and share same swap partition, and you can more easily manipulate the partition if required.

    I followed this on my MacBookPro11,3, it looks like everything installed just fine, yet at boot there is no Arch Linux option, only macOS as reverse text, and a countdown from 10 to 0, this crashes, I reboot with OPT pressed and I am able to choose the Macintosh volume itself. Rebooting again with SD card reinserted mounting the device and typing bootctl with no arguments looks like a good option with MacOS twice and then the linux option from this guide. However it does not boot. I will try to zap the PRAM. Zapping the PRAM did not do it; making sure arch.conf used tabs as key value separator in place of spaces did make a difference, and now this works.

    The most likely thing is that you do not watch, or respond to the comments added to this video, due to the years since its publication.
    In any case, I want to include this observation for those who come here to follow this archlinux installation tutorial alongside macOS.
    First I will say that it is an excellent installation guide, and that it works perfectly on a 2015 MacBook Pro.
    But after some time the 200MG of space on the EFI partition becomes too small and finally during file updates an error occurs due to lack of space on that partition.
    I don't know how this error can be corrected, taking into account that the EFI partition cannot be increased because there is no free space after it.
    If the reader of this comment knows how to do it and would like to include the answer, I would greatly appreciate it.
    Thank you

      EF - Tech Made Simple I guess I can try following the tutorial but on a blank disk (skipping part the partition with Disk Utility) and see how it goes. I just don’t want to mess with the Apple one and being unable to boot it again. Maybe a tutorial for those who want Arch and only Arch on their Macs would help. Big Ermannno I’m your fan keep going I (we) appreciate your work!

      I doubt it, because of the T chip.

    I have seemingly the exact same setup except I also set up encryption. I have to boot from rEFInd into Grub because only Grub can read encrypted ext4

    I have a MacBook Pro 8 (2011). I have dual-booted with Archlinux and it worked fine. The only thing that doesn't work for me is the WiFi

      For that to work you need to install the broadcom-wl driver.

      I installed the broadcom-wl and it has recognized the wi-fi card. Thanks for everything. The tutorial is wonderful.

      For that you need probably the proprietary broadcom driver, which you can install from the repos.

    Wait, what do I install on the USB stick??? How do I boot it so that it goes straight to the Linux terminal??

    • @eflinux

      You'll need to create a live ISO, boot the mac and press the alt key. Then you'll be given the choice to boot the stick.

      Those MacBooks are a little more tricky because the graphics card is not anymore supported, but with the drivers from the AUR you might make it work.

    its a bit pointless having a dual boot when just have arch and just emulate the apple-apps or better yet find the actual opensource versions on github

    • @eflinux
      @eflinux  4 года назад +1

      The point is to have dual booting macOS and Linux for those who wants to use Linux on the Mac. Some users might need it for some tasks and want to have Arch a second system.
