He is right about going to Manual on Canon camera. I am using Canon 1dx and Videomic Pro Stereo. To make it work I went to Normal (not high pass filter) and +20 -> Inside the Canon I wnet to manual and brought the recording level all the way down to zero. Then I moved the audio to 4 (moved it from the left to the right 4 spots) The recorded sound level is a bit low - just a touch.. and FCP X fixes it. No hisss and sounds like a G3 Wireless Sennheiser. Incredible. His video helped me get started.
How do you remove this plastic so you can put mic on,i just bought the camera and its so hard to " just pull it off" like everyone saying,in afraid to break it,can someone give mea dvice ?
i found a rode videomic on the side of the road and you have immediately answered my question as to what the high pass filter symbol means thank you. youre doing gods work thank you!!
Glad you kept this video up. I am an old veteran with an old EOS 500D and thinking about moving to a 550D, mainly because of the "Mic Input". Glad you did the demo of the Rode mic. Being an old sound geek, I was looking for a good mike to go with the 550D. I'm totally familiar with Rode products, but wanted quality, but not too expensive mic for simple video production. Good job and thank you!
High Pass always off unless your outdoors during heavy wind with no dead cat. Always set your volume to where normal speaking is between -14 and -12db. That way if you get clapping or sneezing it does not clip the audio and distort it.
Absolutely brilliant mate. Without any doubt the best, to the point Rode/DSLR set up/tutorial I've seen without rambling on and on like many others. First Class and I've subscribed! Keep up the excellent work.
I've just bought this mic second hand and I'm waiting for my t5i DSLR to be delivered. I've never used one of these before. I'm just wondering, when I switch the mic on, does it only come on when its connected to the DSLR (or appropriate source) or is it supposed to go on (green LED) without a source? I have no idea atm if the battery is working or if its dead. Thanks. PS. are the batteries rechargeable?
Hello, the mic does not need to be plugged up. Normally Green is an indicator the battery is good and on. Red when the battery is getting to low, but the mic is still on. No light, no juice in the battery.. Hope this helps :-)
It certainly has thank you. I didn't realise until I actually took the battery out it was a simple 9v. Just been the store and bought one and hey presto the green light comes on. Just plugged in to a VCR and very happy with it.
Great video for setting it up! I got the Videomic pro 2 months ago. In my use, the background noise is captured so loud. I tried to use the HPF, but I found no difference when I turn it on or off. Really want to know if that's a problem or if it should be like that.
Did you just purchase the Rode VMP and are unsure how to set the microphone up properly? In this tutorial I will show you how to setup and configure the Video Mic Pro on a Canon DSLR. However these same steps apply to almost any modern camera, not just Canon. #rode #vmp #videomic #pro #how_to #setup #canon #dslr #camera
Thank you so much on how you explain about the, -10 of the volume because I film videos in my local town at small warehouse venue. Usually when I'm at loud concert or what not I don't really have a mic for it. This is really helpful how does the mic work for you?
Have to put the camera on manual or it will constantly bring the gain up so high that the audio constantly clips and distorts. Keeping it around -12db will ensure you have enough headroom for any loud noises or gust of wind.
Good day sir, I got Canon 650D but my MIC is RODE MIC GO which is no options/buttons to select. Can I still use the same settings with your or shall I go with AUTO or still manual?
The Video Mic Go does not have built in pre-amp. So this tutorial isnt meant for that microphone. If would say to plug up the mic and watch the volume indicator listed and manually adjust it until it looks like its picking up well, but not peaking to high.. Hope this helps. :-)
Hi Joe, hope you can help, my camera only give me the option of Sound recording On or Off, I cant see any auto or manual. I use the Canon 200d, Thanks!
I can not say for sure on your 200D. That camera is fairly dated. But to get the option to control the audio on current cameras, you also need to be in one of the Manual modes, or Semi-Manual. Like M, Av or Tv.. None of the other modes will let you have the option to adjust your input volume. Hope this helps. :-)
Okay everyone, Thank you so much I've seen a lot of tutorials for this, but this is exactly what I needed, some were telling me to put it on 0 on mic and put on auto on camera, some were saying put on +20 and put one notch from left in camera but this is exactly what I needed 🤙
Hey man, just got this mic. I work on a farm and sometimes work in tractors you would say I should have it on the "hi-pass" setting more often than not yeah?
Depends on how deep the rumble is.. Just test it out and see if it helps. Its normally of heavy wind rumble.. But also do not forget a deadcat will help a ton outdoors.. Hope this helps.
+Redbull357 I am pretty sure I was using one of my Samson Meteor Mic cardioid USB microphones on a boom just above my head hooked into my iPod using GarageBand to record the vocals. Hope this helps.
Hey Joe, checked all that and still just get a hiss. I have the video mic and it's brand new. Any other suggestions and thank you for replying so fast!
Hey Mindy, hate to hear your still having issues. Those are the only suggestions I have. If you still having problems you may try plugging the mic into something else to test it out or plugging a different mic into the camera to test it out. But if your sure its the mic then I would return it before your return period expires. Cheers, Joe
The video you created is very helpful to me to know using my rode mic pro, thank you very much, hopefully your kindness reciprocated with healthy life and long life ...
gad one of these, and the problem I had, was the rubber stabilizers.....very weak and 2 broke in less than a year. Good microphone but I had that problem. I ended up getting the Rødelink Wireless lav Mic. Expensive but worth it. Good video again Joe !
+Camera Noob They went to this new lyre based holder like on the VM Go with the latest 2015 version. They claim its better, it likely is. But they went to it because its cheaper to manufacture. Cheers, Joe :-)
+thomas colbert Excellent question but this tutorial is for DSLRs. It may work with some camcorders however I do not have experience with them so its a question I can not answer.
Hey Joe! I just have to say thank you a ton for this tutorial. I've been making videos for quite some years now and I've had this microphone for a while now, and my audio had always been a little off. Now thanks to you I don't have to mess around with my editing software anymore! There are many videos on how to setup this microphone for Canon cameras and yours is by far, the best and easiest! Cheers and thank you so much!
+Caballero Wear Yes, I own and use these same settings on my Canon 70D. Matter of fact I use the same process on every camera I own. Hope this helps :-)
I'm using mine recording a street musician on the street and sometimes I get a light crackling sound, I use it on straight line on top and 0 on the bottom ... could you give me some advice.. i record quite close to the amplifier and when she blasts her voice it crackles
Thanks. I was following advice from a different tutorial and struggling with noise. This video made great sense and fixed my issue. It was driving me crazy.
I recently bought rode video mic pro but i left it on green life for few days , I recently tried and its not working n the green light is not showing. HELP
Been struggling with static noise for so long using one of the more expensive rode microphones and it's been driving me crazy, couldn't suss out why a good microphone would make so much back noise. Now thanks to your video it makes sense, the recording level function was set towards the end too much! No wonder I got crazy static. Something so simple to make it solvable too! Thanks so much for sharing.
It sure did! I tried this but then it wasn't picking up any noise at all but with further research I found out I needed a pre amp to make it work. Invested in the Beachtek MC2 and now awaiting on it! Fingers crossed :)
Honestly if you do not mind syncing up audio in your editing software. The Zoom H1 is only $99 and has great stereo XY mics on it and your fully able to adjust input gain to -12db so that it sounds the best right on the recorder. You can get the kit with a windscreen and a flash shoe (cold shoe) adapter to mount it right on top of your camera. This is what I use for stereo recording. Plus the audio quality can go up to 24bit-96khz Wave. amzn.to/2tjZcg1
Hi joe.. I Just purchased a Canon EOS80D and a Videomic Pro Plus to go along with it. When I plug it in and follow your settings, it just dint work. What could be the problem? Im stressed out now.. :(
Hey Jay, make sure you plugged the microphone into the mic jack and not the headphone. Also make sure it is plugged in all the way, flush. That said, make sure your battery is good in your VMP. Hope this helps.
Thanks Joe. Totally helpful. Thanks. Do you know, on a Canon, if you manually set a recording level, is it always reset when you have to recharge the batteries? Any any way to make your manual settings the default? Grateful....great video.
Yours shouldn't be resetting. Sounds like the internal battery on is dead. All settings including the audio input gain are not supposed to change when you remove the camera battery.
Joe...grateful for the reply. Super kind of you. I'm pretty sure my Canon T6i does not have a backup battery...at least I can't find it : ). ... Which is a total bummer. But learning about how to set the audio with the RODE? Awesome.
Hello. Do I need a special connector for my t5i between the rode mic and the camera? When I do all of the above I have no sound on my videos from the mic. I can't even test the mic but it's brand new:( Just trouble shooting because it's not a plug and go situation as all videos/manuals are saying. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Hello Mindy, its likely you do not have the mic jack pushed in all the way. This is 9/10 times the problem most have that are new to using the microphones. They just do not have them plugged in all the way. Also check your battery. Light should be green for good and red for needing replaced soon. No light, no power at all.. Hope this helps.
Hi! I am having trouble setting my Rode Videomic Go microphone onto my Canon Rebel T6i. The microphone works but I am having a hard time getting the perfect sound settings for a vlogging style. At arms length I sound muffled/quiet ,and at a close range I sound too loud. Im not sure if you have made a video helping people with the same problem but I was just wondering if you had any advice. Thanks!
Hey Hector, if you set your camera up just like shown in my video the sound will be just about perfect. If its a little low at times and then a little high at times. This is normally fixed with audio compression in post. That way it brings up the volume when needed and lower the volume also to keep the volume more consistent. Hope this helps.
Your video is SO Helpful!! Even though I have a Lumix GH5, I'm new to video. I actually had a Rode Videomic Pro Compact Shotgun, brand new in the box, in my drawer from when I bought my G7 a few years ago and never used the mic. Do you think it will be good enough for sitting outside, combating wind noise if the wind is not too strong? Thank you in advance, and thanks for the vide!! It explained everything I needed. Linda from Texas.
Hello Linda, if you plan to use the microphone outside it is highly recommened that you use a "dead cat" windscreen on the mic. The foam filter on the microphone is not enough. Amazon sales them for about $20 amzn.to/2J7uOhK hope this helps.
Thank you for the suggestion. I saw those as I was looking around for instructions for the mic (before I came across your video which helped more.) Okie doke, I will sure order one as I don't like that wind noise at all. Thanks again!
If you are using the Canon 80D it has a head phone out. Some of the other higher end DSLRs have a headphone out for monitoring audio. But other lower end cameras do not. Hope this helps.
Hi again Joe, I tried this but actually doing this made my audio almost in audible. I'm using the RODE n5g2 which is nearly a 200 pound microphone. My Beachtek mcc2 came today (pre amp) but even with the microphone plugged into there along with into stereo into the camera it sounds exactly the same :( I was wondering if you could help being the pro and all. The microphone sounds exactly the same as it did before plugging into the BeachTek and this product promised that it would get rid of any hiss
If you have never used the mic jack before, it can be rather stiff. Make sure the plug is pushed in flush with the camera body.. This is normally the culprit.. Hope this helps..
Thank you for the how to i really appreciate it. I was also wondering what do you think the best distance from the mic to the actor should be? I read somewhere its around four feet.
+Vicman 4ft is the max IMHO. The closer the deeper and more rich the vocals will sound. Also the closer the person talking, the more you can turn down the mic gain which will reduce how much background noise you will pick up.
Audio Technica AT875r. Its a XLR microphone that I run through my Focusrite Scarlett 2i2. The software I used on the computer to record my audio is Audacity and is free. Hope this helps.
@@JoeJacksonJr Great info thanks!! I'm "originally" an audio guy. Did production as well as radio for years. I have a Shure SM7B which I will be using for the same purpose. Running through a DBX186A into a MacBook with Adobe Audition and Ableton. I also got the Zoom H4n Pro for field and the Røde Videomic Pro Plus which I'm very happy with. Check out my very first two videos unboxing that stuff :)
Thanks Joe - great reminder on how to use the mic. I like how you set up both the mic and coordinate it with the camera's settings. All the best, Cheers Rick
Yea I think when many companies make products they fail to take into account that not everyone is a professional in said field. When I got this microphone I had it working but my audio wasn't the best till I found this out myself.
I have the 90D and have the same exact RODE VideoMicPro microphone. Why is it when I connect the mic onto the dslr, its only recording the Right Audio channel while the Left channel is showing zero activity. I need help
Yea, that is not a audio jack. That is the 2.5mm jack for your intervalometer or wired shutter remote. The 1200D does not have a 3.5mm audio/mic input.. Hope this helps :-)
If your plugging it into the jack next to the power. Thats not a microphone jack, that a Audio/Video OUT jack. The SX10IS does not have a microphone jack. Hope this helps.
Hey man, I set up my T6i with this mic about 3 feet from my face in my room. Still get a bit of an echod sound. It's not sound proofed by any means, but I was hoping being so close would give me a full sound. Any suggestions? I'm in the middle of my room against a wall, so maybe I should go to a corner?
You got to get the mic closer to you. I made a video just about a week ago you should check out were I go in detail on mic sound quality. ruclips.net/video/DSEZemk-3ZE/видео.html
+Canberk SEZER Yea, something like the Zoom H1 has better audio, you can run it into the portable recorder and get cleaner audio that you can just sync up in post later.
Joe's Photo & Video Channel oh cool, I've been considering getting a Camera like a Canon T6i or T6s to get started, but battery life was always something that concerned me, so its good to know they make a product like that! thanks for your swift and informative replies.

I have learned the camera setting from your video that many others missed this important part. Thumb up.
Do you know if this microphone is both good for regular youtube videos and blogging videos? also what cameras is it capable with
Hey Maka, its good all around microphone. But for best audio with will want to be within a arms reach of the camera & mic. Hope this helps.
Thanks, mate. Good video. What settings do you recommend for a conference - high pass filter on or off?
High Pass always off unless your outdoors during heavy wind with no dead cat. Always set your volume to where normal speaking is between -14 and -12db. That way if you get clapping or sneezing it does not clip the audio and distort it.

This is my goto mic outdoors for most everything. :-)
Can't wait to get this mic! Love the review keep posting more videos! :)
Thanks for the video dude! Just a bit unsure as to why we put the stock on manual, isn't the mic doing all the work?
Have to put the camera on manual or it will constantly bring the gain up so high that the audio constantly clips and distorts. Keeping it around -12db will ensure you have enough headroom for any loud noises or gust of wind.

Depends on how deep the rumble is.. Just test it out and see if it helps. Its normally of heavy wind rumble.. But also do not forget a deadcat will help a ton outdoors.. Hope this helps.
Joe Jackson - Photography & Gaming ill give it ago but might have to look at a dead cat, it's on my hero 6 as the audio is shocking
Yea deadcat is essential for any outdoor work. Even the slightest breeze will rumble and sound like a hurricane without a deadcat.
thanks for this video. WHat mic did you use to record your voice in this? THanks again

Mate, this is brilliant. Thank you so much. I just bought this exact mic and the shushing noise was driving me potty! Much appreciated.
Thanks Joe! I have an interview coming up and I wanted to make sure I had the right settings on the camera!
+Donna Davis Glad I was able to help. Good luck on your interview. :-)
nice vid! what lens is that?
Thank you. The lens I had on the camera at that time was the Sigma 18-250mm Lens.
Thank you! I couldn't figure out why the light was red - I didn't even know it had a battery.
Thank you for your help. Now I know how to set up the mic and camera together.
Thank you for taking the time to comment. Glad you found this video helpful. :-)
Awesome job Joe! Thanks for the tips. My sound is sounding better. Keep it up.
+The Profitable Entrepreneur Thank you.
Thanks a lot for the set up explanation it really helped me get my head around how to use the mic.
Thank you, happy I was able to help :-)
Thanks, for explaining each step in perfect detail! Very helpful video!
Thank you man for the crystal clear explanation. It helped me alot.
Glad it helped!
What good canon cameras fir this mic?
*fit
This was very important. Thank you 🙏
👍Excellent tutorial for a novice like me. Thank you. 🙏💝
Great video! I'm just curious what microphone you used for this actual video? Sounds great!!
Hallelujah a no-nonsense tutorial that actually works cheers dude!
Thanks for that, I'm recording a video tomorrow on my Canon EOS70D and was lost trying to figure out why I would use different settings!
Thank you. A very straightforward and clear explanation.
I've done this and i still get a hissing noise. what could it be?
Love THIS! short sweet and straight to the point!! thank you!
Thanks Joe - great reminder on how to use the mic. I like how you set up both the mic and coordinate it with the camera's settings. All the best, Cheers Rick
Will it work on a Canon Rebel T6?
Make sure your camera has a microphone jack, if it does it will.
Very awesome! I've had my Rhode mic for months now and wasn't using it properly
Thank you, happy you found the video helpful. :-)
lindseys lifeNstyle Sane here, I followed another tutorial 😅
good tips and video, thanks! I was a bit surprised to find the microphone came with such lacking instructions
Yea I think when many companies make products they fail to take into account that not everyone is a professional in said field. When I got this microphone I had it working but my audio wasn't the best till I found this out myself.
This video helped me a lot - thank you Joe!!!
I need to know how to turn on the mic, do i need to put batteries in it?
Yes you need a 9volt battery. This video will show you how to turn on the mic once you have a battery in it.
Can This Be Plugged To Canon Eos 1300D (Rebel T6i)?
1300D =/= T6i.. Those are two different cameras. The 1300D, no it has no mic jack. The T6i (750D) yes it has a microphone jack. Hope this helps.
I have the 90D and have the same exact RODE VideoMicPro microphone. Why is it when I connect the mic onto the dslr, its only recording the Right Audio channel while the Left channel is showing zero activity. I need help
Trying to plug in the VideoMic Pro into my new Canon EOS 1200D Rebel T5's jack and it does not fit (jack is too small). Any idea why?
Yea, that is not a audio jack. That is the 2.5mm jack for your intervalometer or wired shutter remote. The 1200D does not have a 3.5mm audio/mic input.. Hope this helps :-)
Yes, thanks. I will try a workaround, by using RODE rec app on my IPhone, and then sync with Final Cut Pro.
Richard Deon You will get much better audio that way for sure. Thats what I been doing for years. :-)
Huge help, first video i came to and came away with everything i needed to know. Thank you!
Thank you Luke, glad to help.
Does this work for my canon powershot sx730?
I do not believe the SX730 has a 3.5mm mic input jack. You will have to check your camera to see if it does.
work it also with the eos 1300d?
No the 1300D does not have a microphone jack..
Thanks man. Followed your advice and it worked perfectly. Before it was echo central now it's almost completely echo free!
Very well explained. most helpful my friend.
Glad it was helpful!
Short and Sweet and to the point! Thank You so much. Just got a new rode to use with my Canon SX60 and appreciate the set up advice! S x
Thank you. :-)
Thanks for the video. Straight forward and simple. I subscribed. 👍
Thanks Joe! Great video that is informative and straight to the point!!
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I just got the Rode mic and was completely lost. thanks again
Thank you for commenting. :-)
Hi mr. Joe i have canon powershot sx10is. When i insert the microphone cable to the camera the screen turns black. Any ideas?
If your plugging it into the jack next to the power. Thats not a microphone jack, that a Audio/Video OUT jack. The SX10IS does not have a microphone jack. Hope this helps.
Joe's Photo & Video Channel thanks for the reply. But what if i buy a 3.5 mm microphone adapter. Will it work?
No there is no way to plug a mic into that camera and or force it to accept one. Its how the electronics are designed. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the information
Very informative bro, I just got this mic today!
Glad I could help :-)
great video man!
Thank you Ela.
Great tutorial, very clear and easy to follow, thank you Joe.
Cheers Joe!
awesome tutorial! short and simple
Thank you.
Great video! Explained everything and straight to the point! Thanks a lot!!
Just picked this up for my GH4, big improvement over the internal mic and don't get the gain buzz in the audio track nearly as bad.
Hopefully this trick will work on the GH4 as well to help reduce the cameras built in preamp noise also..
Helpful explanation of the settings and nice step by step setup. Thanks.
Great tutorial and breakdown Joe!
do you know how to take off the hiss on a canon 600d?
Yes follow this tutorial you just commented on. :-)
Awesome Joe, Thank you for the Tips. I really needed to get an understanding on how to use my RODE and you smashed it! Thumbs Up!
What if i atach the videomic pro to a sound recorder rather than a dslr?
Does it make a difference?
+Canberk SEZER Yea, something like the Zoom H1 has better audio, you can run it into the portable recorder and get cleaner audio that you can just sync up in post later.
so, videomic pro connected to zoom h1 or zoom h1 alone takes better audio
Canberk SEZER both.. Zoom H1 has a built in stereo mic, the VMP is a mono cardioid shotgun mic. So it depends on what type of audio you want..
Great video, followed it step by step on my own Canon. Top work.
What camera did you have in this video?
+bonehead0816 The camera I used in this video was a Canon Rebel T3i (600D).
Cool thanks, is that bottom part of it just part of the camera or something added on?
bonehead0816 Thats a battery grip. Lets you add a 2nd battery for longer battery life.
Joe's Photo & Video Channel oh cool, I've been considering getting a Camera like a Canon T6i or T6s to get started, but battery life was always something that concerned me, so its good to know they make a product like that! thanks for your swift and informative replies.
bonehead0816 Glad to help :-)
