  • What is the Dyson V12 Detect Slim Vacuum?
Dyson's V12 Detect Slim is a compact and cordless laser-enabled stick vacuum designed to be a lighter and more portable version than the recent Dyson Outsize Absolute +, which I reviewed earlier this year. According to Dyson, this version weighs just under 5 pounds and is made for small to medium-sized homes.

    Buy Online on Amazon: amzn.to/3PbxdqE
The new Dyson V12 Detect Slim is all about being small, easy, and light to tote around the house with. It has a modestly-sized dustbin, cleaning heads, and a single battery that is easily rechargeable (with up to 60 minutes of runtime).
    3-Key Cleaning Heads
There are three main cleaning heads in Dyson V12 and several accessories that come with it.
    Detangling Motorbar cleaning head
    Laser Slim Fluffy cleaner head
    Mini Hair Screw Tool
    Charging and Battery Life
Battery life on the Dyson V12 Detect Slim vacuum is reasonable; you should be able to get at least 60 minutes of run time on a single charge. Fully charging one of the batteries will take a lengthy 4.5 hours using Dyson's included AC wall plug, and your battery life is displayed on the rear screen.
    Filtration data
Another great, new feature of this vacuum is the data you get about what your vacuum is inhaling! On the rear info screen, you can see a count and analysis of the size of dust particles that are coming in via Dyson's multi-stage filtration system, and Dyson boasts that the filter is fully sealed. They also claim that the filter is able to trap 99.99% of microscopic particles and allergens, even as small as 0.3 microns.
Cleaning with Dyson V12 Detect Slim
This vacuum is really easy to use, is light, and feels like it's doing a solid job. You can use the attachments on the end of the extension hose or plug right into the dustbin handle for a more hand-held sort of vacuuming.
The accessories and brush/roller heads snap in and out quickly with no pulling or yanking required, which is great.
Overall review: Dyson V12 Detect Slim
Overall, Dyson V12 Detect Slim is easily the best compact stick vacuum you can buy in this price range.
When it comes to the pros: it's powerful, has an automatically adjustable suction, and has an incredible variety of tools and accessories (not to mention a good battery life). The laser sighting works wonders, plus the new 'Hair Screw Tool' doesn't tangle. The downsides? Given its size, the dustbin fills up rather quickly, at least in our two-dog home. It also takes a while to charge, which is expensive.

We have had our V12 for a couple days. It is by far the best Dyson we've had. It is our 3rd one and we love it.

So Rory to hear about the performance on Ruggables! I was all set to commit to the V12, but I have 3 Ruggables, so glad you pointed this out; guess I’ll go with a more classic corded Miele…

Thanks for the great video! I’m not thrilled about the more narrow floor attachments, but given the arthritis in my hands, the stay on button and light weight were more important. Mine is due to arrive this week and I can’t wait. It was $650 U.S. on Amazon, so I’m really hoping it’s worth it.

thanks for a great review. I am considering getting a Dyson V12 for our home (150 m2, all wooden/tiled floors). I am uncertain if the battery power is enough - it says up to 60 minutes but in real situations will often be less than that, I know. What is your experience - would I be able to vacuum our house of 150 m2 (1600 square feet) in your opinion? Also, can you just get a second battery to swop if needed (do you know if they are pricy)?

    • @ErinLawrenceTV

It was a lot of runtime, IMO. And yes, you can get another battery for it too!

Did I miss it? How do you talk about a battery operated vacuum without mentioning whether the battery is detachable and replaceable? She talks about charging "one of the batteries." How many batteries are there? An interesting review except for the battery issue.

I have a robot vacuum that picks up a lot of dirt. Then I hit it with this vacuum to fully clean the house. I got wood floor and tile. It really does a good job. It’s not expensive. It’s a good investment. Got it on sale too. Great review. Now I need to see how to clean the area where the dirt goes,

i am trying to decide between the V12 / V15 / GEN 5 / outsize plus.......have a 2200 sq ft house ..mostly hardwood floors except one room is carpeted then a few area rugs.......like the thought of being able to clean upper corners of the walls.....here in Canada the V12 is 899 V15 is 999 and the Gen 5 is 1199 and the Outsize plus is 1249......all in Canadian funds....which do you think we would be happy with ? we are 58 years old and bodies are getting old and sore...lol..plus i would want to have 2 batteries which is 145 to 199 each... thx cheers

The GEN five detect is pretty great… Although with that said, I am just about to review the new V15 detect submarine version. This one will add light mopping capabilities. It sounds like you could probably get away with a smaller vacuum. That is a bit lighter, and most of the Dyson ones either include a second battery or let you purchase an additional one.

I got a V12 and it is a decent cleaner. My only concerns are the dust gun like empty mechanism and the mostly useless max mode that runs only for 8 minutes and adds a major stress to the batteries.

Warning! No replacement battery for V12 seems to be available. I guess once the battery goes out you will have to replace the vacuum. This battery has been out of stock for at least a year. Did Dyson do this intentionally? We just purchased the vacuum but am disgusted because we cannot purchase a spare battery as Dyson recommends.

I have a V8 and I'm needing my 3rd battery in it. They only last about 18 months, in my experience, then the performance rapidly degrades. They have to be treated as regular consumables and mine is $143 CDN from Dyson. I've tried 2 Chinese knock-off batteries from Amazon and they are garbage. One lasted 2 months before dying, so they sent me a 2nd one, which lasted maybe 6 months. The OEM batteries shouldn't cost more than $50 when you're paying this much for a plastic vacuum.

We have owned and still own several Dyson products. I can’t explain the level of frustration we are experience with Dyson Support in resolving a problem with our V12. In less than a year the Motorbar cleaner head is inoperable and doesn’t work. So far we have been sent two replacement cleaner heads. Both were the wrong heads. It’s has been such a time consuming experience, with any resolution in sight. We are looking into unloading and selling all of our Dyson purchases and will tell everyone we know to reconsider their own purchases.

I must confront the first words out of your mouth because every Dyson vacuum cleaner is a hoover but every hoover (or Hoover) isn't called a Dyson. So yesterday the word synonymous with vacuum cleaners was 'hoover' and today the word that's still synonymous with a vacuum cleaner is a 'hoover'.
Not a 'Dyson', as you said.
My Miele CX1 Blizzard and my mom's 'Akitas' are called hoovers. They aren't called Dyson.
I don't know about you but I take comfort in the fact that I, at least, try not to let the words that come out of my mouth be a total load of pish.

    "the power of an upright"
24v (battery) vs 120v (outlet). Physics would disagree.
Google it. Average upright. 500 to 3000 watts. This Vac? 150...
    you know...physics.

Uprights have around 1000 to 1500 watts at most. Not 3,000. 3,000 watts is central vaccum territory. Also suction is far more important than power, in which floor head design matters a lot more than motor power.
