Do you own a Dyson vacuum cleaner or are you thinking about getting one? Let me know in the comments which one you own or are thinking about getting and why that one is right for you 🙂
Hi James, your review is fantastic. I wanted to suggest one feedback/area of improvement to improve quality of your videos. The background music throughout the video made it difficult to watch. If you keep the music limited to the start/intro and end, I think you would get much more views.
Hi @@techvisionreview thanks for the kind words and feedback, it's appreciated! I'll have a look into it as I'm always looking for ways to improve the my videos and make them easier/better to watch. Thanks 🙂
Hi@@techvisionreview I wanted to let you know I took your suggest on-board and made the changes to my latest video here: ruclips.net/video/xFfdoN57kYs/видео.html thank you 👍🙂
Hi @@wakandathings3909 I'm reluctant to tell or advise people what machine they should get as it varies for each person. Nevertheless, the V15 is an excellent machine and if you can get it in the sale (and you like what the machine offers) then its well worth considering!
I own the V12 since yesterday. I'm very happy with weight, or lack thereof, as well as the button, as opposed to having to constantly hold the trigger down! Fantastic! Vacuumed last night, carpet and hard floors, and it certainly picked up a lot of dust! With regular vacuuming I doubt it will be so much each time, meaning the small bin will be sufficient, hardly a detriment. I really like the ergonomics and power!
Hi thealchemist5376, I agree and I'm glad you like it 🙂. The practicality of picking it up to use it is outstanding and although the bin is smaller it probably will not be an issue for many.
I agree, I thought about upgrading to gen5, but I think the weight/size of the v12 is a huge win. I use mine in my car and have a smaller place so it’s perfect I upgraded from a v6 to the v12 and the difference is night and day. I had the v6 for 4 years
Hi @@collinhayes9509 ! in terms of maintenance, have you ever needed Dyson's maintenance for the old one during these 4 years of use, or even for the new one already? Thank you!
Thank you for actually giving your opinion pick. So many RUclipsrs, who say which one is better, and never actually give you a pick at the end of the video such a waste of time.
I love the 12 as it is lighter in weight & has a button to turn on. I purchased the 15 absolute & it’s so heavy & the dam trigger is an absolute pain. I’m 67 years old so the easier the better. I’m sending the 15 back to Dyson as I type.
Thank you very much for this video. Our kids dropped our V7 Animal onto the tile, and the casing broke. We have had that machine for over five years and replaced the battery once and the roller head once. We used it a lot. I am waffling between the V12 and the V15. After your review, I think the V12 is also the best fit for our family. I think the other two models will be too heavy for the kids to manage. Oh, and thank God, they added the power button! Comment on the cost of a Dyson: we have had a Dyson Ball for probably 7-8 years, and it’s still going strong. We had the V7 Animal for several years, and when a couple of things wore out, we were actually able to buy replacement parts off the Internet and keep it going. I appreciate that. I don’t mind paying more for a product if it is good quality and lasts a long time. our experience has been that the up front cost is high, but the cost of ownership over time is average.
Hi Kim, thank you for the comment! The lighter weight and power button makes a difference 🙂. If you buy from Dyson (and perhaps depending on where in the world you are) they offer a 2 year warranty with the vacuum cleaner too, and like yourself the vacuum cleaners I've used have lasted a good few years.
I am planning to get either V15 or Gen5, but I am leaning towards V15 more, because it has a trigger. Somehow trigger looks more convenient for me, because in order to start and stop vacuum with a button, I need to reach out with second hand, but with trigger I just need to use one hand. The best solution would be if they made a button in place of a trigger.
Hi Максим Нечай, thank you for the comment 🙂! I may not be a fan of the trigger myself but it isn't a show stopper, as you rightly point out one of the main advantages it gives is the control you have over the power. All 3 vacuum cleaners are excellent and I'm sure you'll enjoy the one you get.
Agree with your last sentence. A click button that starts and shuts off the machine, operable with one hand is the solution. it can be placed somewhere just over and almost i between the thumb and forefinger grip.
I would purchase the V15, EXCEPT, I do not like the power trigger. I don't want to spend the money for the gen5 detect and I don't like the low suction of the 12. So, I'll pass on the purchase of a Dyson. Really a BIG mistake making the V15 with a trigger, instead of a power button--What a design flaw that was.
Hi J Barron, thanks for the comment! All 3 vacuum cleaners have 3 power modes: 1. Boost 2. Auto/Medium 3. Eco With Boost being the most powerful and Eco being the most economical (least powerful). The stated air watts in the video are when using 'Boost' mode which drains the battery quickly, so you would probably use Auto/Medium mode most the time. In this mode you probably won't notice much difference between the 3 vacuum cleaners. To see a demonstration of how well all 3 vacuum cleaners work click here 04:01. With regard to the power trigger, I agree I'm not a fan although some people like it.
Hi Dona, thanks for the comment 🙂! "Dyson Gen5Detect is the best vacuum EVER" you're absolutely right, it's a fantastic vacuum cleaner with all of Dysons latest (vacuum) tech on it. I'm glad you like it!!
@@XxsoonerbornxX No, it is not. The V12's tank is tiny, it's not enough for anything, and its suction is much weaker than the V15's. For a small apartment, it might do.
Hi borif, thanks for the comment! It depends where in the world you are as the attachments can vary between countries. However, the main difference is the submarine comes with the 'Submarine wet roller head' allowing it to clean liquids, debris and stains. If you are in the UK it also comes with the 'Hair screw tool'. The word 'Gold' in the title: "V15 Detect Absolute Gold" simply means the pole/wand is coloured Gold. If you scroll down the page here you can see what comes with both models: www.dyson.co.uk/vacuum-cleaners/cordless/v15
Hi Juraj Kaličiak, I have just learnt you sent a 'super thanks' and also learnt what a super thanks is! Thank you so much it is greatly appreciated!! James 😀
Fantastic review. The weight is so very important to me in addition to the button. After going back and forth for several years and buying and returning Dysons....You've helped me to make up my mind. V12 for me😊
I paid $450 US (or about $490 after sales tax) for the V12 Absolute directly from the Dyson website a few days ago. I got it today and I am very happy with it. I don't know if the price I paid for the V12 was a fluke, but compared with $650 for the V15 absolute and $1050 for the Gen5 absolute, it was a no brainer. It ended up being just $50 more than the discounted V10 at Costco, and the V10 didn't inude a fluffy roller bar at all, let alone the Fluffy Optic roller I got with the V12.
Hey Brian, thanks for the comment! That's a fantastic price! Particularly so when compared to the other vacuum cleaners. For anyone reading this, and depending on where in the world you are another good time to by a Dyson vacuum cleaner is Black Friday when they often reduce the price on some of their products.
Thanks for the great video! Im still torn between the V12 and the Gen5. The V12 would be 500€ and the gen5 would be 680€ in my region. The price difference doesnt bother me that much, but the weight difference compared to the suction power difference is where i am stuck. I have a relatively small flat of 70m² with only one carpet, and i also want to use the Dyson for my car, so it seems the V12 would be a good pick. Although i feel like it would be stupid not to go for the latest model for "only" 180€ price difference. Also i have heard rumors about a slim version of the gen5 coming this year maybe? What do you think?
Hi septic1337, thank you for the kind words and comment, it's greatly appreciated 🙂! If you are not bothered by the price difference and you want the best then Gen5detect is the winner. It is the heaviest of the 3 but that shouldn't be too much of a problem if you are already used to lifting/moving vacuum cleaners as its possibly lighter than your previous vacuum cleaner. The V12 is lighter and very easy to "just pick up and use" and would be well suited for a home as you describe. With regard to a slim version of the Gen5detect coming out this year, it could happen but I personally haven't heard anything [yet].
@@james_newall Thanks for the response! I very much like the idea of the V12 being easy to pick up and use, so I could see myself cleaning more often with it. I am not sure though if the suction power is enough for the car cleaning aspect, which has a certain priority for me. Have you had any chance in trying similar tasks with a V12?
@@septic1337 No problem . The short answer is no I haven't, not with the V12, but past experience using a V11 (another fantastic vacuum cleaner) in the car wasn't great. So in home and around the house it's fantastic, but my feeling is it probably isn't as good for car cleaning but will still do the job.
Thanks for the great video. I was struggling with which Dyson to buy.. V12, v15, Gen5. After watching your video, I decided to buy two V12 instead of Gen5. Gen 5 has great features and everything, but heavy weight is a deal breaker to me. and Gen5 is twice as expensive than V12 in the US. I have a big house (hardwood and carpet) but I don't want to carry around that heavyweight vacuum up and down.... and V15's trigger holder is not an option for me.
Hi h, thank you for the kind words and comment, it's appreciated🙂. Similar to yourself, there are a couple of people I know who find it easier and more practical to have two [lighter] vaccum cleaners in the home than one heavy vaccum cleaner. The biggest advantage perhaps being they don't have to carry it up and down stairs.
As much as I dislike James Dyson. I do really like the V15 and Gen5 machines. I really hope the batteries are more longer lasting than the V8 that started to deteriorate after 1.5 years. Went through 5 batteries in 6 years. I suspect the user will experience battery wear, but having Eco mode will help and I think their Auto/Medium modes help the battery not wear out as quickly, though I still found the V15 battery getting warm after vacuuming my flat. I use a SEBO Felix for deep carpet cleaning once a week as I do not like worrying about battery running out and a V15 for daily quick pick up jobs and the car.
My detect5 arrives on the 5th thank you for your video. I hope an animal 2 upright and never had any issues and just keep it clean and still going strong. I am excited about my new one I got the limited exclusive one it was on sale for 799 vs 949. Still expensive but if it last as long as my animal 2 it will be worth it
Hi Henry, thanks for the comment and kind words, it is very much appreciated 🙂! Given Dyson products are expensive that's fantastic saving and looking after them should help their longevity.
I went through this dilemma and for my 3 storey house I decided the V12 slim was all I need. It’s best for light cleaning and if i need deep cleaning can bust out the central vac.
This was exactly what I was looking for, thank you for a great realistic review! The power button is a must for me with carpal tunnel issues and I don't think I can justify the price of Gen5, so V12 it is!
Hi Zofia, thank you so much for your kind words and comment 🙂! It is very much appreciated! The V12 is an excellent device and if you have already bought it I hope you are enjoying it 🙂
James, I own V8, V11 and just bought V15 detect from Costco, but haven't opened yet and thinking about buy Gen5 and return V15 detect back to Costco, well I do vacuum a lot, V8 I docked at laundry and main use for laundry and bathroom, I love V11 but keep breaking Wheel on motor brush 7 times and it was replaced by Dyson with no charge for me, this is a big flaw in motor bar design, as the whole heavy vacuum cleaner travel on those 2 tiny wheel linked with 2 small screw, Dyson should change that. as when you vacuum in rush, you tend to hit the vacuum with other furniture and all which put pressure on when and as a result, the bracket, where the screw of the wheel tighten breaks from inside. , well being said, as I have used V1 for over 3 years and 4-5 times a day as I have replacement battery so I am never out of juice, should I keep $560 paid V15 detect or go for Gen5 for $749, I am confused, one more thing when you call Dyson, they can add 20% discount.
Hi anysarax, thanks for the comment 🙂! We also own a v11 and think its excellent! Of all the Dyson vacuum cleaners the v15 is the most like it (size, weight, apperance etc.) but more powerful. The Gen5detect is also excellent but is more expensive, so if you like the v11 then you will probably like the v15 and I would consider saving yourself some money and stick with this.
Anyone considering the V12 should also compare the V12 and V11, as I've seen a review (on Modern Castle) which concludes the V11 performs better. The V11 is _much_ less expensive, too. I'm about to retire my old V8 & graduate to a V11, V12 or V15. So far, the cheaper V11 seems to be the winner. What I like about these Dysons is they're enjoyable to use! The appearance, maneuverability, engineering & construction makes it so easy & fun to vacuum. Yes, I'm weird.
Hi Crooked Halo, you're certainly not weird and thanks for the comment 🙂! I agree the V11 is a fantastic vacuum cleaner and one we use regularly. I posted a review titled 'Dyson v15 vs v11 Review: Dyson's BEST Cordless Vacuum Cleaners' here: ruclips.net/video/-OpISI20oSU/видео.html where I conclude it is a great buy (although I would suggest getting the 'Absolute' model if possible). Unfortunately, I don't think Dyson make it anymore and I have heard from several people (including a family member) saying they were unable to buy official spare parts. Nevertheless, the price and performance still makes it a fantastic vacuum cleaner. For anyone reading this, if you are interested to learn more about the V11 see my review in the link above.
@@james_newall I _thought_ I heard the V11 is discontinued, but today I was holding one in my hands in a Best Buy, comparing the weight to the V15. One thing I learned today is the V12 is _much_ smaller than the 11 & 15 & Gen 5. I like that smallness and light weight, but it also has less performance than the others. Actually, I did hear that it would be difficult to notice performance differences in picking up dirt in the 11, 12, 15 & Gen 5. I can't decide between trigger or button, but the dirt detector on the 15 & Gen 5 is something I probably wouldn't ever pay attention to. I've never once wanted to know exactly how much dirt I was vacuuming.
Hi@@crooked-halo, I don't think (emphasis on 'think') Dyson make the V11 anymore, but it is likely some other stores will have stock. The V12 is noticably smaller and lighter, but it is also the same height as the V11, V15 and Gen5. Using Boost mode the V11 has 180aw (air watts) of power, compared to 150aw on the V12. However, it is very unlikely you will use Boost mode much as it drains the battery rapidly. As you rightly say, you are unlikely to notice much performance difference between any of these vacuum cleaners and if you have a look here 04:31 you can see the V12 does a fine job picking up biscuit crumbs from the carpet. The V11 doesn't have a laser light nor the fancy particle detection system, but like you I have no interest in this as the cleaners bin does a great job showing it picked up dirt. If you can get a V11 Absolute cheaper than a V12 then it's certainly worth considering 🙂.
@@XxsoonerbornxX I've seen one video on Modern Castle, comparing the 11 & 12 and in the test the V11 performed better. I just got a V15 though, an open-box, new one on eBay & I am blown away at it's performance and the actual enjoyment of using it.
I paid an extra $200 just so I could get the gen5 with the power button instead of the trigger. I had a v10 animal with the trigger and it seemed like it burns more energy because the device constantly turned on and off.
My Next Door Neighbor allowed me to borrow her V 15. I had just vacuumed the day before with my current vacuum cleaner. I was shocked! I gathered three containers of cat fur and dust. I have arthritis and holding down knob to keep the vacuum going was a pain. I like the GEN five but don’t like the price . Not sure if the 12 is going to work for me, but I’ll keep researching.
Thanks for the comment Deja Blu 🙂! All 3 vacuum cleaners are excellent but if you have arthritis then I would urge you to look at and consider the V12, it might be less powerful but it does an outstanding job cleaning the home and is notably easier to pick up and use.
HI, It's very good video. The weight and button made V12 a almost win for me. Just one more concern, V15 can upgrade by adding moping head. Which I checked, the moping head cannot be used into V12. I don't mop floor very often, but when I need to mop. I wish an affectless way than using a conventional mop. Any thoughts?
Hi 曹婧, thank you so much for the kind words it's appreciated 🙂! I think you're referring to the [new] Dyson v15 Submarine which has the 'Submarine wet roller head' www.dyson.co.uk/vacuum-cleaners/wet-dry/v15s-detect-submarine . The pole (also called the 'wand') on the v12 is smaller than v15 and Gen5Detect which is why it will not fit. I haven't tried it myself yet but the V15 is an excellent vacuum cleaner and if you need to clean floors with a mop then having the wet roller head might make this model ideal for you 🙂
Hi C Johansson, thanks for the comment and for sharing this 🙂! I agree the Gen5 is noticeably heavier and appreciate that the power trigger is something others will like.
Hi Yulisa, thanks for the comment. All three vacuum cleaners are very good, it simply depends on how much you're willing to spend and what's important to you. Whichever you choose I don't think you'll be disappointed.
Hi MrManDiller, thanks for the comment 🙂. It's another example of how Dyson models (particularly the attachments) vary depending on where in the world you are. For example, in the UK only the Gen5detect comes with the built in crevice tool, but the v15 doesn't www.dyson.co.uk/vacuum-cleaners/cordless/v15/detect-yellow-nickel whereas in the US the v15 does have it www.dyson.com/vacuum-cleaners/cordless/gen5/detect-absolute-hepa-prussian-blue .
I have two cats and two children except me and my husband. I am so tired of using a corded vacuum cleaner. It is Philips Marathon and unfortunately not enough for cleaning a 230 m2 home. I am between buying V12 and V15. Thought of buying one with more powerful battery has confused me for a long time. But on the other hand, buying a lighter vacuum cleaner has benefits. I want to decide in a short time 😬
Hi Zeynep, thanks for the comment 🙂! I think first it depends if you have mainly carpeted floors or hard flooring, if the latter (i.e. hard flooring) then go with the V12. However, if its mainly carpeted flooring then given the size of your home coupled with the number of people in your family and cats, I would suggest the V15 as it has a larger bin, slightly more power and has the added Plus, Middle and Minus option on the main cleaner head (i.e. not the laser head) allowing you to further improve the suction if/when you need to. I don't know anything about Philips Marathon vacuum cleaner, but a quick google search suggests it's a powerful vacuum cleaner although I couldn't say how it compares to the Dysons. It's worth keeping in mind all 3 Dyson vacuum cleaners come with three cleaning modes: 1. Boost 2. Auto/Medium 3. Eco In my review the Air Watts I state are when using Boost mode which will drain the battery much faster, so you will likely use Auto/Medium mode most the time which will last in the region of 40 to 45 minutes (approximate times only). Also depending on where in the world you are the V15 might come with a built-in crevice tool (here: 02:46) similar to the Gen5Detect, something that is sold on the V15 Absolute in the USA (link here: www.dyson.com/vacuum-cleaners/cordless/v15/detect-absolute-hepa-gold), but not the UK (link here: www.dyson.co.uk/vacuum-cleaners/cordless/v15/detect-yellow-iron). I hope this helps.
Thank you so much for your feedback. Philips marathon is a good corded vacuum cleaner however it is not enough for vacuuming all cat fur around the house such as on carpets, hard floors or couches. I hope Dyson will satisfy my expectations with its different attachments also I can clean my car as well. After all I am so close to buying V15 as it has a larger bin and more power and this is what I basically need in my house although the start button has to be pressed during the cleaning. @@james_newall
Привет, Катя! В зависимости от того, где вы находитесь, цвета и комплектация каждой модели могут различаться. Если вы купили у проверенного дилера, все будет в порядке. Пылесос, который вы описываете, звучит примерно так: www.dyson.co.uk/vacuum-cleaners/cordless/v12/detect-absolute-plus-yellow-iron Translated that hopefully reads as: Hello Katya, depending on where you are in the world both the colours and what comes with each model can vary. If you bought from a reputable dealer you should be fine. The vacuum cleaner you describe sounds a similar to this: www.dyson.co.uk/vacuum-cleaners/cordless/v12/detect-absolute-plus-yellow-iron
Thank you for the great video. I bought v15 a few months ago. I couldn't time to use much. But i love the capacity for dust. 'Cause i live in a large house. The button can be annoying. But there is a part that i bought from different store can be assembled and you dont need to push all the time.
Hi Dayan, thanks for the comment 🙂! You can see in the video we have hardfloor surfaces and neither the motorbar cleaner head nor the soft roller cleaner head leaves a mark (i.e. they don't scratch). The only thing I would recommend is if you are planning on getting one, get it with the soft roller cleaner head (the laser fluffy cleaner head) as its better at picking up dust and dirt from hardfloors.
I had new hardwood floors installed 6 months ago. A month ago I bought a V10 Animal from Costco. It does not come with the fluffy, and the discs on the motorized floor tool scratched my floor under the sofa. The edges have a bit of a rubber feel when they in the straight or near straight position. When rotated on its side to reach under furniture, it can scratch…fine scratches. So best to use the fluffy head on the wood floors, especially when going under furniture. I am returning my V10 and bought the V15 yesterday, so will use the fluffy head only on my wood floors.
Odd, I just got my v15 detect absolute and they seemed to have changed the included accessories durastically. Mine came with fluffy optic, motorbar, hair screw, combination tool and of course the docking station, charger and built int dusting tool. was hoping for the low reach adapter and crevice tool...guess i'll ahve to buy them separately
Hi Shhhpark and thanks for the comment 🙂! Unfortunately, Dyson aren't consistant when it comes to things like this. The accessories that come with a Dyson model can vary from country to country... and although I haven't see this happen yet I wouldn't be too surprised if they amend or change the accessories that come with a model.
Hi Beatrice, and thank you for the comment. I don't own a pet myself but I would suggest looking at the attachments that come with the vacuum cleaners as there are attachments for pets hairs. Unfortunately, the attachments that come with the different models can vary from country to country so I couldn't say for sure based on your circumstance. If you are after quick, light cleaning then the v12 is very good with the Gen5 detect being the best of the cordless range.. and the v15 is excellent too so you can't go too wrong with any of them.
Thanks for the great video comparison of these three models and features. Your review helped to make my decision on the right model to purchase for my home.
Hi James, if the Gen5 and V12 are the same price, which one would you go? In NZ, our gen 5 has a promotion so it is pretty much the same price as the V12. Thanks.
Hi hh, thanks for the comment! I mention it here 07:03 if the size/weight isn't a problem and they are pretty much the same price, then get the Gen5 detect as it offers more than the v12 with all the latest Dyson tech.
Hi Darius, thanks for the comment 🙂. Unfortunately, it sounds as though there is an issue with the vacuum you have. I would take it back to where you bought it and ask for a replacement.
Sorry, one question. I’ve a robot vacuum (Dreame L20 Ultra, the best of 2023) but i want to buy one of these Dyson for places where robot don’t go. Which one of these is better for me? Thank you!
Hi Giulio, I've posted a review for the Roomba j7+ robot vaccum here ruclips.net/video/EYEyWvIxXJY/видео.html so appreciate what you mean about needing to clean places where the robot doesn't reach. If it was me and I was to pick one of these three vacuum cleaners I would go for the cheapest one as they all do a great job. That said in your scenario you probably choose the v12 as it's easy to pick up and put back for the 'few places' you need to clean.
@@james_newall ok, thank you so much. So, I’ll buy Dyson V12! But, in Dyson website there isn’t… and I don’t know which bundle is better and also I don’t know which is the best range of price for V12. Can you help me please? Sorry for the inconvenience
@@GiulioGiurisato Unfortunately, the attachments that come with the same model vary around the world (for example, you don't necessarily get the same attachments with the same vacuum cleaner in a different country). If you don't have many places to vacuum just get the basic model with the motorbar cleaner head, but if you need to vacuum a few places which are a carpet/rug and hardfloor (or even just hardfloors) then you might want to consider getting the v12 that comes with the soft cleaner head which is better for cleaning hardfloors.
Is there performance or reliability differences in the v15? I see different models…many of them, costco also has a model that seems to get mixed reviews.
Hi underscr0e, thanks for the comment! If you mean between the different variants of the V15 then no, it’s just the number & type of attachments and cleaner heads that are different (for example, not all the models come with the soft cleaner head). An example of what I mean can be seen here where I look at the different V15 models: ruclips.net/video/-OpISI20oSU/видео.htmlfeature=shared
On a gen5detect, can I reattach the fluffy head without turning off the vacuum? I’ve noticed that the fluffy head’s green light doesn’t turn back on if I do, and I’m forced to restart the vacuum.
Hi KentConcept, thanks for the comment! I've not tried it but I suspect will be something to do a 'switch' that's incorporated into the power on cycle (i.e. the button on the Gen5Detect). I say this as the older V12 had a switch (which can be seen here: ruclips.net/video/KljsOBeHeaY/видео.htmlsi=B-cwHB49W_IueH1e&t=170 ) built into the laser head allowing you to power on or off the green laser light. However, the newer version of the V12 has seen this switch removed leading me to think it is now built into the button. If you feel its an issue you could contact the store you bought it from and ask if they can swap it for another to see if it happens again.
Hello Jose, thank you for the question 🙂. No, unfortunately this will not work and that's because the electrical contact is built into the battery and not the device. You can see this here where I review the Dyson Dok and slot the dyson (or more specifically the battery) onto the electrical contact: ruclips.net/video/SgMrH4I9CFQ/видео.htmlsi=6_kaFCffZ-X_O4PV&t=106
I have had my v12 for a week now, very happy with every cleaning time. But there is one question if I could ask about battery. It’s fully charge 100% but time remaining only maximum 48 mins on auto mode. Is that because I get bad luck with this battery?
Hi MK Trịnh, and thanks for the comment 🙂. No 48 minutes is pretty good where on auto mode it's around 40 to 45 minutes depending on how hard the vacuum cleaner has to work. The stated battery times of 60 minutes are when it is in Eco mode.
Hi @@mktrinh4799, assuming you bought it new (and depending on where in the world you are, as consumer laws vary) it would be worth taking it back to where you bought it and swapping for another.
I had the v6 for four years and it had a power button. Loved the button for quick uses, but it causes fatigue for longer ones. It’s also easy to accidentally press it, which is kind of annoying. I recently got the v12 with the button up top. While it’s an adjustment, and felt weird at first. I much prefer it after just a few days of use.
Hi Greg, if a vacuum cleaner with a larger bin which has a button is whats important then the Gen5detect is the only option. However, you will pay more for it so its a balance of what you see as right. The v15 is still a great vacuum cleaner though and on it's release was the most powerful cordless vacuum cleaner you could get.
Thanks for comparison. I want the vac with wet mopper, and now that they have launched submarine version of v12 and v15, do you think I should wait for gen5 submarine version or rather go for v15 sub??
Hi Darsh, and thanks for the comment. I'm afraid I don't know much about the wet mopper so it's difficult to advise, although it's something I will likely review when I get a chance. If Dyson are releasing a Gen5 version soon and you don't mind paying more for it, then it might be worth waiting for this, otherwise the v15 or v12.
Hi Mark, I have no idea I'm afraid but its possible. Some products do appear again, for example the Dyson V11 (not the Absolute version) which they stopped selling just over a year ago. It would be worth giving Dyson a call to ask.
I own a V10 absolute. Really disappointed when it comes to picking up small gravel, it only swirls it around in the nossel resulting me getting my old cord vacuum to pic it up. Does the new one has the same problem?
Thanks for the comment ATICAV! I've not had to vacuum gravel type dirt with any of them so its difficult to say. However, on the extreme rare occasion (we're talking one or two times at most) when I haven't see one of my daughters small toys on the floor it hasn't been picked up instead staying in the cleaning head 'battering around'... but then that could be because I stop the cleaner immediately.

Hopefully, the above translates as "A few people have asked this question, so I spoke with Dyson this morning who confirmed you can buy a spare battery for the V12. However, from my own experince it might be country specific so I would advise you call Dyson in your home country and ask them just to be sure."
I really don't get all the praise for the button an criticism for the trigger, it's really not that hard to hold the trigger and it allows you to stop the vacuum when you want, a lot better for the ears
Congratulations James, I love your video and it really helps, it is perfect! I rather prefer Gen5 detect and I am also thinking about Dyson V15s Detect Submarine, did you try it? Do you have any comparison between Gen5 detect and the new V15s Detect Submarine? Thank you so much.
Hola Blanca y gracias por tus amables palabras 🙂! The Gen5 detect is a fantastic vacuum cleaner. Unfortunately, they don't yet sell the v15 Detect Submarine in the UK so I have been unable to try it. However, given how good the soft roller (or fluffy roller) cleaner head is on hard floors I would expect it to be good and something I am keen to try.
For those with arachnophobia, I have the v11 torque but looking to upgrade. They are great to suck spiders up, one with a bit more power than mine though. I need to put it on high to suck them because they stick to the wall. Ugh 😩 I'm itchy now.
Hi Louis, thanks for the comment. Its a fantastic vacuum cleaner and until the Gen5 was released the V15 was Dyson's flagship cordless vacuum cleaner. I'm delighted she likes it 🙂
@@james_newall i think in fact that they don't know how to handle the weight thing due to the big battery to support the power supply on the new motorisation. This is why they announce this big thing with this massive default. If you look well, the v15 and the gen5 are already discounted on a regular basis where the v12 is now not put in front on the commercial banners, and they've inscreased the price of the v12 in europe. I think the v12 was their best seller, way better than v15 but they don't know how to propose a good compromise between power and weight. So... i'm not confident into this gen5 slim.. be we can have hope anyway
Hi @@crespo0 thanks for the comment and thoughts. The v12 is an outstanding vacuum cleaner and if I were pushed I would say its the only real change to a vacuum cleaner since the V11 (which was and still is outstanding). I think you might be right about the Gen5 Slim.
I have carpet in my room only and I also have dust allergies. I want to get a new vacuum for my carpet but since it’s a small surface (10m2) I’m hesitant between the perfect size and more affordable price of the v12 detect slim absolute and the succion power of the v15. Which one would you recommend to someone with dust allergies in terms of filtration system as well? Would the v12 still be enough if I use it everyday?
Hi z45342 thank you for the comment. Due to your allergies I'm hesitant to say which is best for you as this is more a medical view. That said, there is little between the v12 and v15 and I would get the v12. It's an excellent cleaner, cheaper and on 'Auto' mode has an almost like for like cleaning ability to the v15, as demonstrated here: 03:57
Hi Mech, and thanks for the comment. Yes you're right, although it's another example where models vary between countries. In the UK the Dyson V15 Detect Absolute doesn't include an inbuilt crevice tool: www.dyson.co.uk/vacuum-cleaners/cordless/v15/detect-yellow-iron , but in the US it does: www.dyson.com/vacuum-cleaners/cordless/v15/detect-absolute-hepa-gold . It's the same with attachments too where I have seen Dyson offer different attachments in different countries.
Hi Alisa, it depends where in the world you are as the attachments that come with the same named model can vary. Broadly speaking, the 'Absolute' version comes with the most attachments and cleaner heads (i.e. they come with the motorbar clearer head and fluffly laser head). Other than this they are the same vacuum cleaner. Perhaps the easiest/best way to see the difference is to head to the Dyson website and see the attachments that come with each model.
@james_newall oh ok thankyou I'm in Wisconsin lol USA I was going crazy trying to figure the difference out not figuring another country etc it might be a little different. Still considering but they are so expensive lol.
@@alisah2570 No wonder its confusing, I've just had a look on the Dyson USA site and both models offer exactly the same accessories and cleaner heads for the same price. It appears to be another Dyson website error which they will update once someone notices. This happens more often than you might think.
Hi Sapna, and thanks for the comment, the motorbar cleaning head on both the Gen5 Detect and V15 can be adjusted if you do have thick carpet. You can see it here: 02:17 in the video
Hi misenko856, thanks for the comment 🙂. You are right as the both the v15 Detect Absolute and v12 Detect Slim Absolute+ are advertised as having the less bright 'Illuminated cleaner head' on the UK Dyson website... something their customer service/sales staff confirmed over the phone. However, I believe the newer models (i.e. the v15 and v12) now also have the newer, brighter cleaner head too... something my own testing in video appears to confirm, hence no difference between them.
Hi Modoturk2550, it's a brilliant vehicle that allows brave people to go underwater 🙂. Kidding aside, I haven't been able to give the Dyson V15s Detect Submarine a try but if/when I do I'll be sure to port a video review about it.
i just ordered this V15 detect at 799 ( canadian ) 580 ( US )....is that a good deal ? was 200 off ( regular 999 canadian ). I went to a Dyson store and tried them all and i liked the V15 , the trigger was so easy I don't think it will be an issue at all...cheers from Vulcan Canada
Hi Golf, fantastic price for an excellent vacuum cleaner. Having a power trigger isn't the end of the world, so don't be put off by this. Well done finding one you feel happy with :)
Hi Daniel, thanks for the comment 🙂. Yes you're right, I've noticed they've added it to other models too. Models can also vary a little depending on where in the world they're bought.
AWESOME REVIEW.....is the gen5 detect a newer version of the V15 ?....and your thoughts on the V15 submarine version ...also home is about 2000 sq ft...all hardwood with various area rugs only one room has piled rug...try to vacuum once a week at least....your thoughts on which dyson vacuum would be best for us..also have a dog... thx... cheers from Canada
Hi Golf, thank you very much for the kind words it is really appreciated🙂! Yes, the Gen5 is newer than the v15. With your home being predominantly hardwood I would recommend getting a vaccum cleaner that comes with the soft roller cleaner head, as although the motorized cleaner head does a good job on hardfloors the soft roller works better. It really depends on what is important to you when picking a vacuum cleaner. If you are set on cordless vaccum cleaner then on the UK site Dyson provide a tool to help pick the 'right' vaccum cleaner for you www.dyson.co.uk/vacuum-cleaners/help-me-choose/tool that said, you can't go too wrong with any of the cleaners (even the Dyson v11 which I still use and reviewed here ruclips.net/video/-OpISI20oSU/видео.htmlsi=oBoJOYdZWwMwIorq ). The only thing I would mention is given the size of your home you will probably find the bin is a little small on v12.
Hi Code, thanks for the comment! In a previous video here: ruclips.net/video/-OpISI20oSU/видео.html I look at the differences between the V15 and V11, where I run through the different models. It might vary with where you are in the world, but it's likely the model you purchased was the V15 Detect Animal which didn't come with the laser head. However, you should be able to buy the laser head and it will work with your model. I did the same for family when they bought the V11.
@@james_newall Thank you James, I bought it from currys clearance, in the UK I will be looking into buying the fluffy head separately, have to say your videos are very helpful and detailed, love the unboxing part, keep up the great work!
Thanks 🙂
Hi@@techvisionreview I wanted to let you know I took your suggest on-board and made the changes to my latest video here: ruclips.net/video/xFfdoN57kYs/видео.html thank you 👍🙂
Im thinking of the V15 on sale at Costco's. Which one should I get?
I use mine in my car and have a smaller place so it’s perfect
I upgraded from a v6 to the v12 and the difference is night and day. I had the v6 for 4 years
You also have helped me to make up my mind. THANK YOU 😊
Hi @@collinhayes9509 ! in terms of maintenance, have you ever needed Dyson's maintenance for the old one during these 4 years of use, or even for the new one already? Thank you!
@@collinhayes9509thank you. I have a V6 & just bought the V12. Can’t wait to try it.
Thank you for actually giving your opinion pick. So many RUclipsrs, who say which one is better, and never actually give you a pick at the end of the video such a waste of time.
I’ve got the same opinion.
Having a professional pick that’s also realistically informative
I have a v15 last 2 years and it’s been good.
All 3 vacuum cleaners have 3 power modes:
1. Boost
2. Auto/Medium
3. Eco
With Boost being the most powerful and Eco being the most economical (least powerful).
Dyson Gen5Detect is the best vacuum EVER. I love it and now enjoy vacuuming my house.
Hi Dona, thanks for the comment 🙂! "Dyson Gen5Detect is the best vacuum EVER" you're absolutely right, it's a fantastic vacuum cleaner with all of Dysons latest (vacuum) tech on it. I'm glad you like it!!
No it is not the best. If you compare all features the V12 is actually still the best.
@@XxsoonerbornxX No, it is not. The V12's tank is tiny, it's not enough for anything, and its suction is much weaker than the V15's. For a small apartment, it might do.
What is the difference between v15s submarine vs v15 absolute gold???
Hi borif, thanks for the comment! It depends where in the world you are as the attachments can vary between countries. However, the main difference is the submarine comes with the 'Submarine wet roller head' allowing it to clean liquids, debris and stains. If you are in the UK it also comes with the 'Hair screw tool'. The word 'Gold' in the title: "V15 Detect Absolute Gold" simply means the pole/wand is coloured Gold. If you scroll down the page here you can see what comes with both models: www.dyson.co.uk/vacuum-cleaners/cordless/v15
Hi James, I live in UK, which one do you recommend submarine, v15 total or v15 absolute model 😢
Thank you very much.
Hi Juraj Kaličiak, thank you for the kind words, it's very much appreciated 🙂!
V12 for me😊
Hi Teeyah, thank you for your kind comment and I'm glad the video review was helpful. 🙂
A very informative comparison video. Thanks. Have been toying between the v12 and v15 for a while. Will be ordering the v12.
Hi Leaf OCR, thanks for the comment and kind words it's appreciated 🙂
Currently they’re running early Black Friday sales on the Absolute models, so it’s not a fluke
Hi @@jenweatherwax7113 that’s fantastic if so! If anyone is considering getting a Dyson then Black Friday sales are good time to buy one.
It's on sale for $400 US now, grabbed it myself at that price.
@@feedbacker fantastic price!!
V12 FTW. Excited to get it in a couple days.
Bought the detect based on your review. $850 AUD it’s a bargain
I went through this dilemma and for my 3 storey house I decided the V12 slim was all I need. It’s best for light cleaning and if i need deep cleaning can bust out the central vac.
I thought v12 detect slim was good for deep cleaning..
The V12's tank is tiny, not enough for anything, and its suction power is much weaker. For a small apartment, it might do.
Thank you my friend. From Türkiye 🇹🇷 🙋🏻♂️
Merhaba utku kuyumcu teşekkür ederim takdir edildi 🙂. (Hopefully, that reads 'Hi utku kuyumcu thank you it is appreciated 🙂.')
I worried about the V12's smaller bin. It's fine! Great machine.
Power trigger can be solved by purchasing a Control Clamp on Temu
No. the V11 is not even close to the 12.
@@XxsoonerbornxX I've seen one video on Modern Castle, comparing the 11 & 12 and in the test the V11 performed better. I just got a V15 though, an open-box, new one on eBay & I am blown away at it's performance and the actual enjoyment of using it.
Thank you. This video helped me to make my decision .for me v12 is the best for the price and the on/off button.
Hi Asmaa Ismail, I'm so pleased it helped you and the V12 is an excellent vacuum cleaner 🙂.
I paid an extra $200 just so I could get the gen5 with the power button instead of the trigger. I had a v10 animal with the trigger and it seemed like it burns more energy because the device constantly turned on and off.
Just watch this before I purchase one on Black Friday very useful video. Thank you
Thank you for the comment and Black Friday is a fantastic time to look at getting one as they often offer good deals. All the best with it Kal 🙂👍
Marvellous review!
Thank you so much, it's appreciated 🙂
I haven't tried it myself yet but the V15 is an excellent vacuum cleaner and if you need to clean floors with a mop then having the wet roller head might make this model ideal for you 🙂
I returned my Gen5 and bought the V15. The triggerbutton is awesome. The Gen5 is to heavy.
Hi C Johansson, thanks for the comment and for sharing this 🙂! I agree the Gen5 is noticeably heavier and appreciate that the power trigger is something others will like.
I'm debating on the Gen5detect ! Really been looking into all these !
Hi Yulisa, thanks for the comment. All three vacuum cleaners are very good, it simply depends on how much you're willing to spend and what's important to you. Whichever you choose I don't think you'll be disappointed.
Dyson's current listing of the v15 detect absolute has a blue cap hepa filter and built in crevice tool
It's worth keeping in mind all 3 Dyson vacuum cleaners come with three cleaning modes:
1. Boost
2. Auto/Medium
3. Eco
In my review the Air Watts I state are when using Boost mode which will drain the battery much faster, so you will likely use Auto/Medium mode most the time which will last in the region of 40 to 45 minutes (approximate times only).
Купил 12 и считаю что он золотая середина … он гораздо легче и справляется прекрасно! Выбор за вами!!!
Спасибо за комментарий! Я согласен, это отличное устройство!
Excellent and an unbiased review. Informative and practical. Well done. You've helped us make the right choice.
Hi Shraye, thank you so much, it's appreciated 🙂!!
I have a v15 last 2 years and it’s been good. ..
Kısa ve öz. Teşekkürler ☺️
Teşekkür ederim Fuzuli! 🙂
I buy model v12 detect slim absolute with full gold head and marine blue filter.
Did you know about this model? Is it original?
Translated that hopefully reads as:
Hello Katya, depending on where you are in the world both the colours and what comes with each model can vary.
Hey, could you please give us more information about the part that keeps the button pressed? Thanks!
Hello. Sorry for late respond. I couldnt find that i bought. And i cant add link in comment. But you can search with “dyson vacuum button lock”
@@timeabaka3282It can be found on Amazon.
A simple velcro strap will keep the trigger pulled in.
How good are the Dyson vacuums on hardwood floors in terms of scratches? we just got new hardwood floors and don’t want any scratches 😅
The accessories that come with a Dyson model can vary from country to country... and although I haven't see this happen yet I wouldn't be too surprised if they amend or change the accessories that come with a model.
hello, I have a golden retriever and I live at home, without many carpets. What would be the right choice? Thank you!
I have just ordered the V12, like the power button and the weight.. Looking forward to get it home :-)
Hi Leon, thanks for the comment and I hope you are enjoying it 🙂
Thanks for the great video comparison of these three models and features. Your review helped to make my decision on the right model to purchase for my home.
Hi Norman, thank you so much for the kind words and I'm really pleased to hear the video helped 🙂!
This is best video Ever I have seen about Dysons.
Hi Büşra Hilal, thank you so much it's really appreciated 🙂!!
Just got me new gen5 and happy with it, but can't understand why when using for carpet its stops spinning and stops work. Any idea why?
Hi Darius, thanks for the comment 🙂. Unfortunately, it sounds as though there is an issue with the vacuum you have. I would take it back to where you bought it and ask for a replacement.
Thanks for your reply.
I thought maybe because of carpet, like is too dense and hardly air comes in and stops for that reason.. but naahh
..
@@Darius_Juknevicius You're welcome. No it should work, I think you were unlucky with the one they gave you. Hopefully the replacement works well.
@@james_newall thank you so much!
Just ordered the v15 lets see how it goes
Hey SJ K, thanks for the comment 🙂! It's a great machine, powerful and able to clean large homes well. I'm sure you will enjoy it.
Why are there so many complaints about Dyson’s customer service and products not being shipped?
I like the gen5 because it has no trigger just like the v12 3:56
What's better Dyson v15 vs Tineco PURE ONE Station Pet?
Hi James: Do you know if Dyson 12 can work connecting to electric by a contact, without a battery?
Hello Jose, thank you for the question 🙂. No, unfortunately this will not work and that's because the electrical contact is built into the battery and not the device. You can see this here where I review the Dyson Dok and slot the dyson (or more specifically the battery) onto the electrical contact: ruclips.net/video/SgMrH4I9CFQ/видео.htmlsi=6_kaFCffZ-X_O4PV&t=106
thank you for information, i choose v12 best
Hello Ahmet, thank you for the kind words 🙂. Its a great cleaner!
@@james_newall I’m appreciated for you reply. I just double checked again with eco mode, it was 48 and auto 29😕
Hi @@mktrinh4799, assuming you bought it new (and depending on where in the world you are, as consumer laws vary) it would be worth taking it back to where you bought it and swapping for another.
@@james_newall thank you so much for your reply!👍🏽☺️
@@mktrinh4799 you're welcome 🙂
Just got the V15 cause I didn’t even know the about the Gen5 and I’d much prefer a power button rather than a trigger. Should I swap it out 🤔
I had the v6 for four years and it had a power button. Loved the button for quick uses, but it causes fatigue for longer ones. It’s also easy to accidentally press it, which is kind of annoying.
I recently got the v12 with the button up top. While it’s an adjustment, and felt weird at first. I much prefer it after just a few days of use.
Hm, perhaps. The gen5 is also heavier, so don't swap if that's a concern. If not, then perhaps. More suction, and power button.
Or opt for V12, which has a bit less suction, but also the power button, and is lighter, making it less fatiguing and easier to manoeuvre.
Can you compare against the Maircle equivalent?
Thanks for comparison. I want the vac with wet mopper, and now that they have launched submarine version of v12 and v15, do you think I should wait for gen5 submarine version or rather go for v15 sub??
Hi Darsh, and thanks for the comment. I'm afraid I don't know much about the wet mopper so it's difficult to advise, although it's something I will likely review when I get a chance. If Dyson are releasing a Gen5 version soon and you don't mind paying more for it, then it might be worth waiting for this, otherwise the v15 or v12.
I cant find an dyson outsize absolute for the life of me! Are they discontinuing that line?
Hi Mark, I have no idea I'm afraid but its possible. Some products do appear again, for example the Dyson V11 (not the Absolute version) which they stopped selling just over a year ago. It would be worth giving Dyson a call to ask.
Thank you for a great review. It has been very helpful.
Thank you Vicki is is very much appreciated 🙂!
Thanks gonna buy v12 😊
Hi Tasneem, thanks for the comment 🙂. It's a fantastic device and I hope you enjoy it!
Great video thank you
Thank you, it's appreciated 🙂
I just got the v15 my wife loves it 😂
Hi Louis, thanks for the comment. Its a fantastic vacuum cleaner and until the Gen5 was released the V15 was Dyson's flagship cordless vacuum cleaner. I'm delighted she likes it 🙂
I'm waiting for a 2024 Gen5 Detect Slim that will replace V12. Buying Day one ;)
haha that made me smile, I suspect you're right there is a slim version on its way. Thanks for the comment 🙂
Can I buy the Gen5 Built-in dusting and crevice tool and use it on my V15?
Hi Ash, yes I believe you could do. Since posting this video the v15 now comes with this tool too.
It's an excellent cleaner, cheaper and on 'Auto' mode has an almost like for like cleaning ability to the v15, as demonstrated here: 03:57
The v15 detect absolute does have the built in crevice tool.....
Can some one please tell me what the absolute is on the v12 vs v12 slim how is the absolute versions different.

Hi 嘿默貫哈, thank you 🙂
If the V12, V15 and Gen5 where all sale for the same price wouldn't it just make sense to buy the newest/most powerful?
Isn’t gen5 supposed to have 2x brighter laser than v15? Seems same strength to me 👀
Yeah true, i heard that too. Well i see no difference
ALL models have the same laser now.
