To be honest, except Turkey, UAE, Egypt and Russia, no one was really commited to supporting their preffered side much. It was only thanks to Turkey that UN recognized government of Libya survived Haftar's assault and defeated them. But they weren't strong enough to capture all of Libya either.

@@night8285 Remember that Turkey bought S400 long after AFTER USA refused to sell patriots. Turkey has the right to defend itself, and when its allies refuses to sell defense weapons needed to do so then Turkey has a moral obligation to buy whatever weapon is available to protect its people.

What a complicated mess!
The great thing about this program is that it explains the motivations of countries allying with different groups which is something news agencies are clueless about or doesn’t make a good sound bite for them.
Is not really that complicated. Both Syria and turkey are govern by despots, while the Kurdish side emphasizes democracy and the liberation of it's people. Since democracy poses a treat to despots, not to mention that they are generally hates by the west as well for having (ever so slightly) "leftist" ideology...
That's just a minuscule part of why the Kurds are always in constant treat, even when they are constantly fighting against terrorist, more than the syrian/Turkish army, sometimes

The sheer complexity of the geopolitical entangle in the Syrian territory and the tense and carefully balanced relationship between Turkey and Russia is absolutely astounding. I don't know how I'd even begin to understand a fraction of what's happening, had I researched it on my own.
But can I commend RLL for making such a ridiculously complex topic actually so accessible??? I pride myself in having a decently easy time in understanding complex geopolitical conflicts, but this is the first time I actually felt like, without this video, I would've been completely lost. The video is so amazingly well structured and it introduced every idea not a second later than it was needed so consistently, that I was able to follow a half an hour long essay on a multi state, multi ethnic, multi decade long, multi conflict web of war and geopolitics like it was nothing. Even beginning to untangle this myself would've been absolutely momentous.
This is not just knowing about the topic. There are so many ideas that are mutually exclusive here and that they wiuldn't make sense if they were introduced in the wrong order. By starting with the motivations of the biggest players, the Turkish government and the Kurdish nation, RLL managed to construct a very cohesive and consistent narrative that still managed to convey the sheer depth and complexity of the topic. That takes very real writing skill and, up until this point, I was never able to see it. This video outright amazed me. It has got to have been one of the best geopolitics video I've seen.

The sheer complexity of how the big players interact with each other in this conflict is confusing. if RLL did not organize and structured the narration, we will be lost in the middle of this video

Nice video, unfortunately it does have some false/lacking information:
-France is not ethnically homogenous with them even dealing with their own ethnic terrorists in the past against the FNLC and the ETA (Corsican and Basque seperatists respectively).
-There is no mention of the Kurdish government in Northern Iraq that is virtually independent from Baghdad since 1992 that has good relations with Turkey and allows them to not only conduct airstrikes in their own lands but allows them to set up military based in Iraqi Kurdish soil. The Iraqi Kurdish government allows this due to a power struggle between them and the PKK that culminated in a civil war in the region in 1994.
-Both the figures for inflation and the number of refugees in Turkey are state numbers that should ABSOLUTELY not be trusted. Inflation is reaching 200% on a lot of goods and the number of Syrian refugees has been reported as being 'stable' for the last 4 years.
-There was no mention of the fact that the first military operation in Syria by Turkish Armed Forces was conducted against ISIS forces that had reached the Turkish border. The plan was to show the Americas that the Kurds weren't their only ally in the region against ISIS (and ISIS has been practically dead for the last couple of years anyway).
-You did not mention the demographic shift that has taken place in Northern Syria during the civil war as most of the refugees to Turkey are Arabs/Turkmens (A group you entirely failed to mention) from Northern Syria. Before the war the region was majority Arab almost entirely with small Kurdish towns/communites (although I am not accusing the Kurds of ethnic cleansing its just that the Kurds who lived in the area wanted Kurdish rule so they stayed while the rest fled north)
-This is not a mistake but I wish you talked more about the geography and how it affects conflicts in the region (specifically the mountainous landscape that allowed to the Kurds to live with low outside interference until recent history but made them splintered and without a common goal of nationalism (again, until recently)).

The video mentioned that Turkey initiating a relocation would result in a shift in Arab refugees to the Northern Syria so I don't think the video completely left out that part.

Rojava is not concerned with its ethnic demographics, it's rooted in Kurdish liberation but aims for the liberation of all people and welcomes all ethnicities into its borders. It is already a multi ethnic area which is held together by direct democracy instead of nationalism in the same fashion as an ethnostate

Thank you, as a Turk it was nice to see an objective and well compositioned video about the subject. We are in the middle of the selections and all our people are quite distressed at the moment, including me. Mostly because of the state of economy, refugee problem, terrorist organisations... But I believe neither of the presidents could make it any better. I stopped trusting politicians long time ago.
Also, to clarify, no. We don't declare a war against Kurdish people, we declare war to terrorist acts. If you "could" call it a war, of course. We fought together for this land back in 1920s, altogether as Turkish, Kurdish, Laz, Circassians and more... We won't divide our land that we all fought for. So stop saying stuff like "booho give their lands back" when us Turkish and Kurdish people clearly fought side by side to protect our borders and country.

Your government is attacking the most democratic front in Syria. Kurds have never been fascists and racists like you. They have not genocided other ethnic groups like you. Take a look at the past, the genocide and denial of Armenians, Kurds and Arabs, etc. and naming their motherland as Turkey. Of course, we Kurds are never looking for revenge, we just want you to leave us alone. We were not enemies with the Turks, Arabs and Persians, they were the ones who tried to harass us at the same time.

But there are people I know that live there, some report that there are many Kurdish flags and they don't let Turkish people show their flags, they threaten them. A police officer that we know reports these. One of my friend's cousin lived in east region, he was taken to mountains. Being taken to mountains means joining the terrorist organisations with guns in the field, btw. Some are encouraged, some are threatened, some women are raped before taken to mountains.
Also, there are many martyr news, there are even teachers that were murdered in the east regions such as Aybüke teacher. I don't think the government would bomb their own land to justify the acts; given all these examples, there is no need for that

There's been a great war in this region for over 50 years now. The only reason it hasn't been so bloody is because the most important actor, Turkey, has chosen the path of calculated restraint.

23:45 it is not UN recognized Turkish EEZ, it is Sevilla University(International Reltions department) map which is asked to draw by Greece. It is just recognized by Greece and EU, nothing more. But you need to know that UN recognized Turkiye's EEZ at 24:08 as you showed through accepting the EEZ agreement between Libya and Turkiye.

As a Kurd living in Turkey, I do not have any problems. I have equal rights. Every Kurd who does not disturb the internal peace in the country is as valuable as a Turk. The Kurds who are disturbed by this situation are the Kurds living outside the borders of Turkey. Apart from that, 90% of the Kurds living within the borders of Turkey do not leave Turkey and do not attempt to rebel because we are Turkey. We see their lands as our own land and the Turks as our own brothers. Kurds who left Syria, Iraq and Iran, please do not interfere with us and our Turkish brothers. If you continue to threaten our borders with the PKK and other terrorist organizations, we will defend the Turks and Turkish lands until the last drop of our blood. How happy is a Kurd who lives under the superior Turkish identity. and I'm a Turk

Most do not know that Carter (1977-81) was the main culprit for 9/11. He cut the funding to CIA foreign office, gave funds to help the Ayatollah Khomeini, and turned his back on longtime and vital ally the Shah of Iran. After Khomeini took over, they captured our embassy as America seemed to collapse. Iraq then invaded Iran, and Russia saw its chance and invaded Afghanistan. That was where Bin Laden got his start.
I am a Kurd living in Turkey. Certainly the PKK does not represent us. The Kurdish majority in Turkey respects the unity and solidarity of the country and there is no oppression or oppression. Kurds can live and talk wherever they want, however they want. In schools, they can receive education in Kurdish on demand, and they have organizations that represent them. The PKK forcibly kidnapped many of my Kurdish acquaintances against their will and forced them to war. The PKK massacred thousands of our people. We do not want a separate state, we want peace and tranquility. The events are not as the western media tell. (My English is bad so I used a translation)

The extremely sad true is that was the idea. How the European powers of post WWI divided up all the land was perhaps deliberate to cause chaos in the region and let European powers continue growing while the Middle East mired itself in petty conflicts. It is a lot like Europe 1200-1690ish with opulent royals and governments quibbling over the most random of things as the common people suffered. The only way this mess can end is if the people of the region finally get fed up with constant war. Took Europe AT LEAST 500 years to do that. Do we believe the Middle East is more or less stubborn?

As a Turkish firstly i want to thank you but everything will go worse. Most of the Syrians come to Turkey and broke our national avarage. They are not going back to their homes and we are not letting them to go europe for the money coming from there. Erdogan selected again (20 years and still president unluckly) 2 days ago and he said he wont send syrians again to syria. Their mans are killing-r@ping our womans. Their kids (avarage turkish people have 2-3 kids despite the fact that syrains have at least 5-6) and womens begging in our streets. We want them to go. Not pregnants or child for now. Their mans should go and fight for their lands. (According to not formal numbers there are 8m sryans in Türkiye 80m turkish people in Türkiye)

And also, Kurdish taxes come from western Turkey. Taxation is one of the biggest beef with Turks of the country and Kurds, who don't even pay their electricity, use electricity illegaly and Turks from tax-paying regions are actually compensating a lot of the cost in their own bills.
One of the big reasons Turkey will never allow an anti-Turkish state is the very fact that ever since Turkey was formed; it's been desperately trying to bring water to the region, revive it's economy, education etc. The dams of Atatürk and Keban been so difficult for the ailing economy in 70's, if you're a doctor who's born in İzmir, as an ethnic Turk, you're obligated to do Eastern Service, in those Kurdish dominated regions too, because the state does force you to at least do some community service type of era to help the region out.
Teachers who want nothing to do with the east are to go work there for a time, the state uses a lot of it's tax income to support Kurdish regions for decades now
After all that, nobody, absolutely nobody give up the region over some ethnic minority with hopes of an ethnocentric state that's run by a bunch of insurgencies.
The reason Turkey doesn't want a Kurdish education, is simple. This isn't an American mish mash society, there's literally no reason for any Kurd to speak only Kurdish. The region is not keen on education, people hardly finish high school and curtailing their ability to speak the official language is harmful to them in the first place.
I really hope that one day there will be no borders where everyone is accepted and for all greed to die so we can work for the future of humanity no the future of a country but that is an impossible task no matter how you look at it

I really appreciate how you try to lay out all sides motives. You don't just tell the viewer who is right and wrong, you explain what they all want and seem to let the viewer choose.
For the most part, he does use some subtle linguistic phrases to suggest who he thinks are the bad guys. Like there's no reason for him to say "so called safe zone" unless he wants the listener to believe that safe zone isn't an accurate term to describe it.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Kurds had it in their mind to nominally take over Syria. Which makes sense for them to prop up one of Arab factions in exchange for autonomous port access and control over Kurdist sectors of Syria until they break off.
