As to gaming with the Apple Vision Pro, I asked the developers of Virtual Desktop for the Meta Quest if they’d have any interest in developing an equivalent Apple app so “we” could play our Steam VR content the Vision Pro. They said they will definitely look into it. Yes, that would require you to also own Vive trackers and controllers, but in principle that would work.

Speaking as a 35 year old father of 5 I can’t buy 7 headsets for my family and that’s the problem. That said my only Vr experience is via iPhone and Google chrome like googles goggles then I got a PSVR 2 and the eye tracking was the most impressive thing plus my first controller experience. I was underwhelmed by the screen door effect and over all graphics. If Apple fixed the image quality awesome! But I need compromises to lower that price, actually I’d prefer a 100% AR experience even if the image is a bit transparent I see a huge future in DIY apps ex. I need to build an interior wall in my basement to convert it into 2
Rooms having AR take measurements and walk me through the steps is a society changing experience.

Something I thought of while watching this video is that when you were talking about everybody staring at their screens, you did what we all do and that’s lean our heads down because we’re looking down at the screens. That is a posture problem that more and more people are encountering that’s causing health problems. With the VisionPro, one of the benefits is likely to be that we have better posture, because I think people will be looking up more, or at least straightahead, and having fewer problems with posture, because we will be in a better body position with our head alignment to our neck and spine.

AR glasses are definitely the future of everyday computing. Not sure if they will replace the smartphone anytime soon but they will certainly work alongside it. The applications for augmented reality are endless, exponentially so when you start combining them with generative AI. As for the isolation factor, I think that's something we need to work on, but that's a societal problem and not a technology problem. In fact there are many ways AR could help us connect with people instead of disconnect. I am still surprised Apple got into this game but that only proves this technology has a real future.

Mac Studio from 1999.- - yeah, well, i ended up at 6500.- but only because i chose the small SSD. What'll it be for the Vision? A 2k version with a non replaceable battery in the HMD, M1 and 4Gb RAM as the base model for 3499.- maybe? And only the top model for 6000.- is able to be used tethered for working at your desk.

You could side courtside at a basketball game, and sit next to Jack Nicholson. You can have companies produce virtual instructions. I use a Quest 2 w/Steam VR to play VR games while exercising on an omnidirectional treadmill. I use the Apple Watch while exercising on the omnidirectional treadmill because all other fitness sensors I tried wouldn't record in realtime the start-and-stop running of an omnidirectional treadmill workout (they'd go to "sleep mode" during dialog sections in the videogame, for example, and would take a minute or two to wake up, by which time you might be finished running to the next area in the videogame). You'd think with Apple's focus on fitness, they'd make a VR headset which is compatible with fitness gaming. But I can't imagine working out and sweating into a $3500 headset. The external battery would be OK if using an omnidirectional treadmill (you could just attach it to the back of the omnidirectional treadmill), but I'd imagine the external battery would be annoying if exercising out in the real world, like jogging on jogging trail or something

I think this device as is priced is meant for developers and early adopters so that they can iron out the remaining issues. I think there will be an affordable non pro version, just called Vision. I think this is the product you want when you want immersion. It is not a product you want to use all the time or for long periods. I think the battery pack should be 3hrs. However maybe the 2hrs limitation of the battery pack is intentional due to health and safety concerns of the eye sight.

It goes to show you how Apple’s device has really overwhelmed people with their incredible preliminary implementation. Every company is changing their design to copy Apple’s. Hopefully a year of refinements and more information will produce a well rounded product.

    • @Klust413
      @Klust413 Год назад

I don't see what they showed as an "incredible preliminary implementation." Apple's presentation to me showed they actually didn't learn from their competition and missed the mark in a variety of ways from design, to cost, their presentation, and lack of supported apps. It looks half-baked, yet stupidly over-engineered in the wrong areas. Their tracking for instance. The sensors will miss movements beyond 90 degrees due to their placement for inside out tracking. The front eyes oled panel that's definitely adding at least $500 to the price for very limited gains to the user, but also now adds breakable glass to the outside of the device. The heavy metal construction that'll contribute to it being too heavy to comfortably wear for very long periods while simultaneously causing it to wear out faster. There's limited app support because they didn't move to make it work with the established industry.
There's some decent parts of it, but a ton of really inexcusable flaws for the company who's supposed to come in with the well developed product that's learned from the first movers' mistakes.

Eh. The Vision Pro is undeniably cool tech and they had a really solid reveal presentation for it - but I don't think it's going to do very much to spur further adoption of this tech. VR is a niche product right now and AR is a niche within that niche. This product, being as expensive as it is, is destined to be a niche within a niche within a niche - and given they've basically completely ignored VR gaming it's likely to have even more limited appeal.
It's going to sell out for sure - but the buzz will die down quickly and almost nobody will talk about this thing until a new model is revealed in a few years and everyone collectively remembers they still have the first one collecting dust in their closet.

I've said this before and I'll say it again. Apple should buy XReal and the Mudra Band and make an absolute KILLING introducing its base to AR.
The headset (a 130 inch micro-oled screen the size of sun glasses) could be a compliment to the iPhone the way that people can't leave their house without their AirPods and the Mudra Band is essentially an Apple Watch Band that allows for moreless the same hand gestures that the AVP does. Just make it a part of Apple's "Vision" line and have the AVP as part of its Pro lineup.
Use case: Waiting at the Doctors office, car repair etc, just reach in your pocket, grab your Apple Visions plug them (or airplay) them to your iPhone, put on your AirPod Pros and immerse yourself in your favorite shows at 130inchs+ while everyone else is watching Jeopardy.
The technology for this scenario already exists. It would be absolutely awesome if there were Apple Branded products that could do this. The AVP is great so is it's potential OS, but the price alienates the same people who put billions of dollars into Apples pockets in the first place.

As a niche product for gamers or specific industries for design or simulators, sure AR/VR goggles or glasses will serve a purpose and be useful. As a general consumer product, that so many are predicting will revolutionize tech, I just can't see it happening unless the pricing gets to commodity levels, which is a long way away, if ever!

Rene, thanks for having Georgia on to comment on this. Apple has created a technologically advanced headset that is beyond what anyone has produced before, but the question really is - what is the human reaction to this.
This headset like all of the others is isolating and so Apple spends 90% of the tech on making it less isolating and the other 10% on what the headset is meant to do - bring you information and experiences in a new, compelling way. At 15:49 this is what Apple wanted; the Apple Vision Pro is what we got. Apple will hopefully make this a useful product that will have niche success. Apple Vision Pro is THE killer app for the flight from LA to Honolulu, but everyone else is waiting for confirmation on the rest of it.

I see this version as more for developers and enterprise, like the huge Surface whiteboards that Microsoft offers to big businesses.

Give us 2.5k resolution in each eye, 120hz, m1 chip, r1 chip and all the same tracking cameras and the same spatial audio (with audio ray tracing) like Vision pro for like 999usd. Also make it a bit slimmer if possible. Then this cheaper version will always be 1-3 years behind the more expensive one.

  • @tamwilfred

Apple is usually strategic when introducing new products. My best assumption is that it will gain more development in the market and start a trend in that direction, similar to what they did with the iPhone. Since the big advances with their M chips, it seems like VR/AR will have the power needed without being too bulky. The higher-end Oculus sets require a gaming PC with at least an Intel i5-4590 and an Nvidia GTX 1050Ti . I remember trying out the Hololens in 2015 and it was not a great experience. It seemed slow and buggy. It seems like when Microsoft entered the smartphone market when Palm Pilots were the current top business device. The Windows phone was marred by buggy software and less fluid experience.

In my opinion Apple created Vision Pro as productivity tool as #1 priority. As a productivity tool, $3500 is not overly expensive for a company to purchase.
People often forget that computers started first as a productivity tool used in offices before it evolved into the Laptop/iPAD/iPhone. In the same way, Vision Pro would most likely be adopted in offices first before it is used for home/game use case.

Well they did present it as a new form of “spatial computing”, but they did not present it as an Enterprise device. Yes - they proposed use cases for FaceTiming with coworkers while on a business trip, for mirroring the display of a MacBook, and receiving 3D models via chat/email…
*But*, they also presented consumer-focused experiences like watching movies, taking 3D family pictures, looking at giant photos, and just generally everything you’d currently use your iPhone/iPad for.
An Enterprise-intended device would be presented in an entirely different, formal manner with 90% of the casual/consumer features stripped from it to ensure employee productivity.

This is a high-end product for people with enough money to throw away into a beta project not yet fully actualized with hardware and software. To deter casual consumers who aren’t so tech savvy from getting it and being disappointed in this early-gen product, Apple gave it a high price. You might ask why they’re even releasing it, it’s because Apple still needs to attract developers to the space in order to have apps and find use cases and make improvements to the software stack before they get people who would just never buy it again if the experience was poor. They want to keep sentiment about AR/MR high within the consumer’s mind

We would still have been moving toward mobile pocket phones if iphone had never existed. Would they all be the same (boring) slate style if not for iphone, who knows. But Mobile phones were a well established rising market that Apple simply entered.
VR headsets have always been niche, it’s not something we already use in common use.
