Getting silky smooth pictures and videos is easy with the DJI Mini 3 Pro and some simple ND filters. I use some of my Iceland footage to show you how to get long exposure photos along with the Freewell Bright Day pack of ND filters and polarizers.
I also give a full quick explanation on how ND filters work, what the numbers mean on ND filters, and what settings you need when using ND filters.

Happy flying everyone.... Ian
Get smooth n silky nice n easy...... All ISO pronunciation comments gratefully received ;)
Living in the Austin area, I'm more distressed by your T-Shirt.....😕
beautiful natural scenery, thank you video
I don't generally use ND filters at all; I prefer sharper footage clips. However, if it's really bright sun light I don't want 'frame stutter', (example when panning) which is caused by 'too fast' a shutter speed with a slow frame rate(25fps); I will only then use an ND filter (ND8/ND16).
it's all personal preference.
I generally shoot 4K/50fps and produce on a 25fps timeline; which then allows a decent 50% slomo; this being adequate for my needs.
Liking the shirt...Roll Tide. Learned more details from you then most youtubers thank you for the information.
Thank you for that once again matey! I’m off to Spain next week so I’ll wish you good health in their local vernacular; ¡Salud! 👍🍷😎
Thank you for making this video. Extremely helpful for me! 😄
Thank you, I've watched a bunch of videos on this topic and found yours most helpful
Great video on using ND filters. Thank you for explaining. 👍
Brilliant - many thanks Ian. God forbid the next cyclist! lol
Thanks Ian for another Grreat informative video (UK)
I just got my filters recently haven’t used them yet. And this video just helped me out a ton
Great video Ian showing the true importance of ND filters without portraying them as a necessity like some reviewers do tying to push them for the manufacture. Also great job of showing when you might or might not want polarised ND filters in different scenarios over water. All in all a great honest review of ND filters. 👍
Thank you squire! 🤠
I enjoy watching your videos. You help me a lot on the settings on my drone, but I have a question for you cause I’m still new at all this settings and filter. I just got two days ago. I want to use the ND 64. What should I put the settings on the iOS and there’s another one I’m not sure .
if you can help me out that would be cool. And if you can help me out the settings for ND 128 I’ll be so nice thanks buddy.
Actually if you're using a higher value ND filter, just leave your exposure in auto. That way, the drone will work it all out for you and you won't have to adjust anything.
Nice and short and straight to the point thank you as always 😎
Great video. Thank you for the great tips!
You're just the Guy I've been looking for, or should I say Bloke? What is your recommeded flight height for Lava and a distance to waterfall? I will be encountering both here in Hawaii and I CAN NOT afford to risk my drone. Any other advice is well appreciated. Aloha
I would stay at least 250 - 350 feet above the lava if it's a large widespread lava field, as the heat will be tremendous. You can get closer, so say 150 feet, if it's a narrow lava stream on its own and not surrounded by other hot lava. Waterfalls are always risky as there is spray that can envelope your drone, which is never good. Stay above the waterfall and look down...... :)
I’m using my DJI mini 3 pro primarily for photography. What set of filters would you recommended? Nd filters or nd/cpl filters? I like cpl for glare reduction in water etc., but I’m afraid of any distortion in my photos. I hope you can give me some good advice :). Love your channel!
I'm not a fan of cpl.... I like the shine unless you're trying to shoot what's under a crystal clear sea......👍🏻
Ian - this is one of the best explanations I've come across yet of the technical side of photography / videography in terms of the exposure triangle and how it's limited on drones with fixed apertures. Even though I know the exposure fundamentals, it's always great to hear it described in different ways. Of course, the same principals apply to mirrorless cameras, as well as DSLRs. ISO vs ISO - tomarhta / tomayto. 😉
Cheers for that 🤠👍🏻
Well put together 👏 👏 👏 👏
Great video Ian and what amazing place to capture waterfalls and great info and tutorial in long exposures :)
I'm sorry, did say to put the appropriate filter on but still leave the camera function on AUTO? Sorry, newbie here.
Yes. It will do all the work for you
Great explanation Ian. Really helped me out.
Great vid, brother. Appreciate the info!
GOOD SHIT. THANKS.
DBM. ENGLAND.
Informative video. Nice work!
Very helpful. Many thanks.
Ian, your delivery is bloody fantastic. Just bought a pack of ND/PL filters to take to Snowdon and Ingleton falls. Your timing is spot on.
So glad RUclips recommended your channel mate. 😊👍
Thanks for the vid mate 👍
Excellent, thank you
Great summary Ian. 👍🏼
Thanks Ian for the info 👍🏻
Great video
Hi Ian. Thank you for explaining this. Much appreciated mate. Cheers from Perth WA.
Great stuff Ian!
Hi Ian, nice video. For me in Portugal during summer I need the ND64 for most of the day due the wide aperture of the Mini3 Pro.
I have the Freewell all day pack plus a ND64PL and the long exposure pack.
The long exposure pack has the ND2000 but I am not getting the same results as with my Mini1 ND2000 due again to the wider aperture. Maybe with a ND4000 Freewell can solve this issue.
Excellent Tutorial Video, Excellent Information, and Excellent Flying. Thank You Ian.
What kind of set of ND filters do you recommend?
A simple set giving you 8, 16, 32 and maybe a 1000 for the supper silky. I put a link in the video notes for the Freewell ones that are £49. 👍🏻
I just bought a KnF Concept variable ND 32-512. It has numbers on it that go from 5-9. 5=32 6=64 etc. It's all you need for video. Use the higher numbers for photography. £24.99 on Amazon.
So cool 😎🤝
So it doesn't matter if you don't hit the exact shutter speed? For example 30fps you can't hit 1/60th but go a bit over like 1/80th? With a fixed aperture it must be tricky.
Great video Ian, such a clear and comprehensive explanation, I shall be trying out my ND filters very soon!
Great video as usual. What if you looking to shoot stills and video while your up there on a bright day, do you have to bring your drone down to take the filters off before you shoot photos and relaunch?
It depends. Generally you can take stills with an ND filter on as well. You will only start to get the silky effect if you've got a very strong ND filter on that would normally be too strong for video. So if you've just got an ND16 or an ND32 then you wouldn't have to come down and take those off just to take photos 👍🏻
@@IaninLondon Thanks for your reply, just bought the Mini 3 pro and your beginners video is invaluable. (Stepney born trans plant in the US.)
Excellent Ian very informative, thats one area that I struggle with 🤷♂️ I did try a polarising filter shooting over a reservoir but didn’t come out too good 🤨 I’ll play around next time I’m out with an 8 and 16. great content as usual mate thanks 👍
Extremely helpful video. It is very easy to follow. Excellent job.
Excellent tutorial video Ian. I've been wondering whether to get a set of ND filters for some time, without really understanding how to use them - your video explained it all so well, clear and unambiguous information (as always) - thanks very much - off to Amazon right now!
Thanks Ian. This is the first side by side comparisons I’ve seen which truly show the dramatic difference that ND filters can give! I’ve been on the fence as to whether or not they are necessary. I definitely plan to get some now!
P.S. The footage of the waterfall with the birds flying between is beautiful!! Only lacking a Mr. Attenborough voiceover! 🤩
Thank you Ian for explaining this as I was struggling to understand what the nd filters can do! I need some polarisation filters now! Great vid as usual, and feel sorry for your mini 3 that succumbed to the volcano! Fantastic footage though! 😊
Dumbed down to my level.
BRILLIANT
Ian
Any thoughts on the blog on utube about the positive news on the new easa rules with regards to classification of DJI drones
Ian, great video. I’ve watched many explanations on ND filters but YOURS finally made the concept click for me. I now feel confident enough to give them one more go during our holiday at the beach next week. Thanks! And the polarizer bit at the end just generated a sale.
Can you use auto mode with a filter to get motion blur? Would you recommend auto or manual?
Yes, you can use auto but you're guessing a bit as to how strong an ND you need. With manual mode, you're adjusting and checking at the same time so you'll know you're getting the frame exposure down to around 1/50 - 1/60...
@@IaninLondon perfect thank you!
How much extra weight do they add to the drone? especially the polarised ones?
Wow.8:32 when the two birds flew underneath the camera was fantastic
Ted can move when he wants to.
That he can 🐾🐾🐾
Thanks for the info on the filters Ian. Very helpful.
you and your presentations are a breath of fresh air!!
Would just LOVE to be able to do this. Sadly, most of our waterfalls here in Victoria are locked up in Parks Victoria managed national parks, conservation reserves and special interest reserves where drone use is explicitly banned. About $11,000 fine if you get caught flying illegally there.
Wow! They really do hate drones!!!!
I shared your exposure explanation for a new drone user group. Great primer!
Just curious, did you film in-studio and do an amazing job of compositing or shoot outside with a modifier?
Thank you! If you mean did I film the main narration sequence, then yes, that was outside with usual Mics etc... Nothing too complicated :)
Another great video, really informative!
Thanks, Ian. This is the best and most clear explanation of ND filters that I have viewed. Cheers from Wisconsin.
Thanks George 🤠👍🏻
Good job for video, today i was record with dji mini 3 pro( manual white 5600k, ISO 100 and shutter speed auto) the video was a lot of noise 😢 what should i change? thanks
We're you in auto? If so, how do you know it was ISO 100? It may have altered it?
Hi Ian and thank you very much for the video. I have a doubt, if you had to choose a long exposure filter between an ND and a ND / CPL, which is a good compromise for all scenarios, which one would you choose?
My concern with CPL filters is precisely in the photography of wet things, I would not want the images to be distorted.
Thanks for any reply.
I rarely use CPL filters for just that reason; unless I'm filming down into the sea and want to cut out reflections. Otherwise I stick to standard NDs.
Good work young man, I am just getting in DSLR and your explanation made perfect sense. Hope to get the mini out the weekend and maybe use my Skyreat filters.
Glad to help 👍🏻
Thanks for another helpful and easy to understand video. I'm hoping to get some ND filters and this has really helped me decide which to get 👍👍
Great stuff Karen. They'd go well with your mini 3 👍🏻👍🏻
Good video again Ian.
Cheers Lyn 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
When you’re in the uk and it’s overcast like it is a lot which nd do you find yourself using to just achieve correct exposure for say 4K 60 (not long exposure) ? Thanks
Usually an ND8. Or none at all if it's very cloudy.
Do I need ND filters if I fly my drone on the "auto" mode?
Great explanation and real time examples. Will keep this in my knowledge references. Cheers Ian 👍
Glad it was helpful :)
Hi Ian, love all your videos, I take more still photos and want to get a good night shot of you local see front what settings should I use and nd fillters. Thanks 👍
Higher ISO around 400. Defo no Nd filters tho as you need as much light as possible....
What software do you use to edit your drone footage. I am a drone newbie
Adobe Premiere Pro. But filmora is a brilliant reasonable alternative. 👍🏻
Hi Ian - did you send the "reply" to my comment, asking me to text you on Telegram because you "have something" for me? I ask because it looks fishy, and a similar message appears on other comments.
No. It's spam. I have some pretty strong filters to block these comments but sometimes they still get through.... 👍🏻👍🏻
