  • Maniac Mansion (IBM PC V2) An enhanced version was also released later in 1988 for the Commodore Amiga, Atari ST, and again for the IBM PC. It features greatly improved graphics, with double the resolution and far more detail in both the characters and backgrounds, even though it still sticks to a 16 color limit. Although the Edisons were originally flesh colored, this version turns them all blue, for some reason or another. The PC version is still stuck with lousy PC speaker sound though. Functionally, these enhanced versions are the same as the original release, except the Star Wars poster in the arcade is replaced with a Zak McKracken poster. If you try to read it, your character will muse how they could never find a use for the gas can on Mars. This is a reference to the chainsaw found in the kitchen in Maniac Mansion, which is useless because there's no gas anywhere. Both PC versions, as well as the Amiga and Atari ST versions, utilize a copy protection scheme, which requires that you look in the manual to open up the blast door on the second floor. In all of the other versions, it's unlocked and stays open.

Because Day of The Tentacle exists, it's pretty much NECESSARY to use Bernard in your group.

Fun fact, in the remastered version of Day of the Tentacle, you can play Maniac Mansion too inside one computer. 2x1 in funny game experience.

OH MY GOD THIS GAME WAS DIFFICULT!! Between the "real time" aspect in which playing as one character did not stop time for anybody else in potential danger, the ability to fuck yourself over in countless ways by one person taking an item they shouldn't have...or worse yet, that character not having the 'traits' to use such items, the endless ways you can win/lose in essence. I mean, this game pulled no punches and did NOT fuck around with you lol.
Don't get me wrong I love this game to death, it's a classic from my childhood for sure. In fact, I am a few years off from getting to enjoy it brand new. Man..gaming life was tough before the internet existed! LOL!

agree. Admit that i beaten it now for first time reading an old included walkthrough (really, opening a envelope with a microwave and a fucking water jar WTF?) using dave bernard and razor, and still i managed to fuck myself out anyway as Dr Fred cutscene playing that coin op game TWICE or even MORE somehow changed his highscore (which is the key code to secret lab door) and the old code i discovered before using it was somehow outdated aaaand I DIDN'T HAD THE 200 COIN-ONE-TIME-USE - ONLY FOR READ THE HIGHSCORE AGAIN so was literally impossible to guess the new code. Thankfully in the internet era i had to google all the high score codes, and thank God they were just like 3-4 different combinations until you insert the right one, otherwise i would end up in a dead end game over. Good concept game but write with the ass at time.

I like the original and more simple PC Speaker theme better. Great game - played it when I was young, on my 80286 - never beat the game though, but it's a classic.

Liked. I play in the 1st (1987 year) version on CGA mode with simple sound.

Graphics are good (on par with the Amiga) but the sound is definitely not as good as the Amiga. Nice Long play though. Always enjoy this game 👍

I think this is with PC speaker for sound here which is pretty much the worst option on any system that didn't require you to turn a radio to static so it could create sound by Van Eck phreaking. Multi-voice PSG sound like the PCJR/Tandy 1000 or Game Blaster would have been much closer to what an NES did.

oh gods. on PC it sounds soooo awefull. just ugly. unbelievable it later outmatched the comodore. If comodore would have stuck to Gaming PC's like the Amiga aso, it would have become the best gaming PC even today. The sound alone was much better. you have to compare the music on PC and Amiga. unbelievable.

It was the unfortunate part of PC gaming in the 80s and early 90s. Many game titles were optimized for Tandy and Amiga, which means the midi sound conversion was optimized for their hardware. While the sound files in games would work on other platforms and operating systems, the conversion from the data files into usable output was... suboptimal, to varying degrees. Maniac Mansion was probably one of the most egregious examples, but any title that had "music" suffered similar fates. For example, the Police Quest series has a similar difference between Amiga/Tandy and DOS versions for the earlier game titles (this stopped being a thing once the SCI version titles started coming out). Defender of the Crown was another such title, with major differences between Amiga, Atari ST, and DOS versions.
