It's similar in Dark Souls, the game becomes much easier when you drop the idea of trying to kill everything and just run past most of the enemies. Turns out avoiding conflict is easier than trying to kill the enemies to get them out of your way.

Everyone saying the devs are salty or annoyed are clearly tone-deaf. The devs clearly know the deal with speedrunning and are enjoying the experience and are having fun poking at themselves for their own mistakes and oversights. Bennett especially.
The fact that they said they weren't going to patch bugs because they're part of the speedrun is awesome. I felt a twinge during the DMC5 run when the devs said they would have to patch out the out of bounds clipping
Actually one of my favorite games. Took me 14 hours my first time, an hour and a half my 2nd time, and grinded out the gold pot. I wouldn't call myself a speedrunner but I did get a time under 10 minutes ^_^

This is by far, the best segment in IGN. As a developer myself, I love to see how they react when people do crazy stuff with bugs and glitches, that not even the developers understand how it's possible.
*Bungie just nerfed all speed run tools in Destiny 2* This Dev: We're not fixing that bug because it invalidates speedrunners and it doesn't break the game.
To be somewhat fair to Bungie it's somewhat of a different story as far as patching or not patching glitches when you're talking about a living world game with multiplayer vs a standalone single player game. Let me be clear though I'm not a fan of the move (especially since it was completely unnecessary for the sword rework despite Bungie saying it was a necessary side effect) not to mention countless other decisions and problems with Bungie lately.
@@KickyFut Mainly just campaign missions that have no inherent difficulty and Multiplayer maps that are built to be impossible solo without abusing mechanics.

There's no inherent difficulty mechanics in D2 outside of damage and health modifiers, except in raids, where the difficulty comes from coordinating players in puzzle-like mechanics. None of it really broke the game for players other than the users, and it didn't really change any of the encounters as much as it just bypassed a couple.
IGN Really needs to see if they can get the developers to talk to the speedrunner afterward so they can ask questions and learn more about the run of their own games.
Probably difficult logistically (and would stretch the videos by quite a bit) but it would be interesting if some of these had the speedrunner join in on the conversation so any tricks they are doing could be explained if the devs aren't sure what's going on (the Half-Life episode had a bunch of these). And fingers still crossed for some Miyazaki x Souls video.
ByteMe performed a 100% Nightmare run of Doom 2016 at Quakecon 2019, he provided plenty of commentary on what was going on and interacted with two or three devs during the run.
Not necessarily have them in person, but at least some notes for the glitches and techs with the time/moment that it happens would help the devs understand... I think it'd be a nice touch to get more content for the series in the video, as we watching can always pause and google it
There was a small series that did that and it was awful. The runners were extremely awkward and mostly just monologued explaining the game, destroying any sort of commentary between the devs.

I love that these guys and most of the devs who watch speed runs of their games just take the piss out of each other. You’d think having your mistakes being fleshed out to hundreds of thousands of people would cause embarrassment, yet they’re just laughing and loving it and I think it’s great. Solid work ign keep this ish up.
I'm glad that these devs are actually aware of how speed runs work and even refer to things as tech and are going to patch things that are minor exploits that speed runners use.

Listening to Bennett Foddy talk about ape out is like an emotional paradox, the sound of his voice causes anguish from playing getting over it, but ape out is my favorite game, and I respect him for helping make it, so I’m feeling respectful anguish which doesn’t make sense
This is great narration by the developers. It's like Tim and Eric had developed this and are laughing about how silly it is to watch some lad destroy their creation.
I would love it if you had a speedrunner alongside the developers so they could explain each trick, especially when it comes to the big skips in games such as Half Life.
I want more talk between the devs and the runners I think it would make longer runs much more interesting cause in every one of these episodes the devs say "How did they do that!?" it would be nice to have the runner there to explain it and nice for the viewer too cause most of the time I've never seen the run for the game being showcased and have no clue what's happening

He litterally designed a game to frustrate people, i doubt a speedrunner messing with his game is going to bother him more than making that monstrosity xD They both seem to be analyzing the game they made and are having fun seeing what they might have missed or poking jokes at things they couldnt fix or didnt have time to.
You know you've watched too many games being speedrun when the devs go "why is he only running sideways sometimes", and I go "probably because of the walls" (and then the speedrunner confirms this later in the video).

I liked the way the developers react to their own "mistakes". As a developer it's hard to see someone just walking through your game, but it's also skill you need to do so. So they've learned a lot, and I think of they could they would really like to fix stuff to make it harder but this is what you just know after seeing a pro walking through the game, speed running it. Things like that after 15:14 there are no doors you need to open until 17:14 - maby this makes it "to easy" to speed run. Espacially because afterwards there are also no doors to open until 23:00 - that's a long time.
My theory on the running sideways glitch: Maybe if the transition screens lock the player's y-value, if the player moves right and up, maybe the upward momentum is still applied, but since your y-value can't change, you get the speed boost from the extra momentum without the time loss of going up? Maybe?
I can tell these aren't devs annoyed by someone speedrunning their game - they're devs suffering at the idea of watching even another minute of this game they slaved over
This game was awesome! I played on mouse and keyboard, and was pretty much just running through most of the time except to occasionally grab a guy, and had to slow down in the last level. Interesting to hear them talk about it.
Love that I got to be a part of this. If you want to watch a run without deaths, DevilSquirrel recently beat this run with a time of 26:42!
