You should teach home economics; backwoods edition. When you whip out the sewing machine we know we are no longer in Kansas. You completely amaze me; from the recipes, the van build, your jack of all trades craftsmanship, and the incredible video you capture. It's such a gift to view the world you created to live in. Truly inspirational for us old school outdoor nature types.
Us Canadians are pretty handy when we want to ! I wish I could be my own mecanic but I have lots of other skills to compensate.

Foresty I've no doubt you will look back on these years of your life as some of, if not they best years of your life. I travelled 20,000 miles across land throughout Europe between 2015-2020 and it fills me with glee when I reflect back on the experiences I had. When I watch your videos I get a little reminder of what it was like to truly live the free life and to travel without restrictions. You really are living it large and keeping the spirit of travel alive in your RUclips channel. Thank you and stay safe out there :)

I guess we tend to measure tasks in the resource that is most precious to us, living in the rat race its time - when you have all the time in the world but power is limited that is the resource to measure.
Hey Foresty, usually there are people selling firewood in small communities. Not the ones that live near campsites. But places selling full cords of quality hardwood. Once you found a good network of em you can load up super cheap. Maybe even buy 1/2 a cord and ask if you can keep it stored there

Foresty.. get yourself a small dehumidifier. I do resin work all year where most people have to stop in the rainy or snowy seasons. I’m able to keep it going with a little bitty dehumidifier! Every few days it needs the cup emptied from all the accumulated water it pulls from the air in my studio. Easy peasy & it brings the humidity from 70, 80 or even 90% down to 20ish%. In your van it would probably do even better bc it’s a smaller space. You know when it’s needing emptied bc it auto clicks off. Just put a note on the dash to remind yourself to dump the cup out before you drive off so it doesn’t spill. Love your videos.. it’s wonderful, especially bc I hate the cold, to see you out there doing things. Even sitting around the fireplace shooting the shit for a while & making a meal👌. Thanks for sharing.. we’ve been hunkered down for so long you are truly a big breath of fresh air 🙌💯💯💯

@@pamflowers8364 heya Pam ..the unit I did is from Tenergy.. it was around $80 or so a year ago. For my little studio it’s amazing.. it’s around 10’ x 14’ space (heel to toe lol) It has a small hepa filter but it can run without it to collect even more moisture. Either way it’s a nice thing. I had another that had a nightlight at the bottom over the water tray - can’t remember what brand now & I gave it away bc I wanted an air filtering model without using more space & plug ins for separate unit.
Edit: it had a few comments about not being able to get replacement filters. I haven’t had that issue bc other companies offer it as well. The filters last 4 or 5 months so far👌

I'm always amazed at the long drive-aways or the long approaches in various You Tuber videos.
A recent video on Kara & Nates channel, of Nate solo climbing with a guide (well, solo as far as not being with his wife) really made it clear. His guide was a bit mystified by the extra time Nate was taking setting up the camera for the various shots.
That run back across the bridge ... that drive-away on that dark, morning drive out. That's dedicated hard work. Thank you.

Wood seasons without having to be dry or undercover.
As long as its dead a while, a season for small stuff, a couple for bigger stuff, you'll be ok. It just needs to be off the ground to stop it staying damp.
A dead tree connected to the ground will be wetter than one snapped off or fully blown down and ripped out.
I've cut trees that had obviously been dead a long while, but they were full of water and had to be seasoned almost as long as a fresh felled one!
Do keep an eye on stuff, but don't let the worryers impart their fears on you.

Watching from Portugal, no boondocking allowed in Portugal, big fines for sleeping in your van anywhere but a campground. They are blaming van dwellers for everyone else’s trash. So very sad.
You'll be able to see creosote building up way before it ends up being a problem since you take it apart so much. You can get a chimney brush off Amazon for a few bucks that you can run through every month or so, they are sized for a particular chimney diameter. Just make sure to get a poly brush, not a steel one. The steel brushes are for brick chimneys and will scratch up your chimney wall (which helps new creosote build up).
I agree, it is normal to burn pine where I live and as long as you sweep your chimney occasionally there will be no serious problems.

Get a bumper rack or box for the wood. Keeping it inside just brings in moisture and insects. Also the moisture reader to get dry wood to begin with is a good idea. Keep up the great work, Cheers from Mtl !

Brian is in New Mexico perhaps going to Arizona for the weather. Foresty, Brian, and Chrome (van city vanlife) are the only van dwellers I follow religiously. It amazes me how they are different in temperament, personality, and life style while living in a van :)
I played FF and SUV Rving for my granddaughter she loved to watch them at 8 yrs old.
@Guy Martin forgot to mention Tristan. He is one old school hiker/climber, too. I guess I don’t consider him a van dweller. He’s more like me, car camp in order to hike:)
Wow. My great grandmother said when they wagon trained across the Canadian prairies to homestead in Sask they started late in the season and the only thing that saved them from freezing to death was her feather tic. Funny what 120 years will do.
And *guaranteed* some friendly native people. Settlers would not have lived through a winter without the original inhabitants teaching the newbies how to survive the land.

On the firewood... Standing dead is usually a lot drier than horizontal dead, even if it is off the ground.

Foresty has a fireplace all he needs now is a little miniature Christmas Tree and your good for the holidays! The van looks pretty cozy. Beautiful footage of that area it truly is a winter wonderland there. Much more nicer than here in BC right now.

Just messed up a crucial exam for a course in my computer science minor. Multiple all nighters in the past week studying... this could end up making me fail the course, therefore delaying the completion of my minor for another year. Let alone the wasted $ on a course I probably won't pass. Feel so down on myself. I knew the content, had everything right in front of me and just wrote a bad test. Couldn't focus, mind was racing, couldn't remember simple concepts, and the worst.... i immediately remembered everything right when i finished. But hey, at least theres a foresty forest video waiting for me. Your videos are always a source of comfort, even in the most stressful and bad times. That final scene during the credits roll. So that's how Simo... I mean, Foresty, sets up those types of shots. I always thought his drone camera was hovering stationary in place. Turns out the camera is tripod-mounted and that lots of running is involved.
You should cut the paneling that's within that wooden square you just cut out and put fireproof insulation under that alu sheet. Not only will it up the fire proof rating, but also insulate that whole portion. If you do this, let the insulation hang over the sheet of metal, over the wood, and screw it in, then cut the excess with a sharp knife OR run it over the wood with a piece of trim. That way, the wood is 100% outside the reach of heat and cannot get accessed by any fire.

I Haven’t seen rain in weeks on this little road trip im on from NW Oregon where it’s non stop rain right now. SF is great 😌 my close friend lived in Millbrae 45 min south of SF for a few years and visiting the bay area was great fun! But ya gotta love being away from all those people and traffic out in the desert, that’s for sure 🏜 🌵

I LOVE these project videos! I find it insane that you make whatever you need and seem to have an infinite supply of tools in your van. Also, I love how functional the van's interior has become. It's a mishmash of things you've needed to do over time. It looks so cool. You've done an incredible job. Your old van was nice, but this has become so much better. (Not to mention the AWD!). Thanks for these entertaining videos!

Gotta say when I saw the plastic bag you used to catch clippings in, it brought many memories like telephones with rotary dials. Kauai has a plastic bag ban _(which is a good thing)_ to help reduce the carbon footprint & have less plastic end up in the ocean so seeing your plastic bag was very nostalgic 😁💭💭☎️📞

For your firewood, try to find standing dead trees as they tend to be much drier. It seems like the Rocky Mountains has a lot of insect kill standing dead trees.
Lots of dead lodgepole pine mostly.
I was a Firefighter for 28 yrs. I went to many chimney fires. The problem that most people have with wood stoves building up creosote is that they damp them down so much that the creosote cannot be burned off. You need a "clean" wide open burn every so often. You can not make a firebox full of wood last 12 hrs. without causing problems. A gas engine will not run right if you restrict the airflow, neither will a wood burner. Mike from Mass.

We had a chimney fire years ago at the old homestead on the coast of Maine...happens very quickly, and unless one is right there and knows how to deal with it - can be disastrous...

I like the standing dead wood when I can find it .It is very dry and burns well .

My experience with wood stoves is burn rounds , split wood burns fast and sleep with only a sheet over you so when stove drops only a couple of degrees you'll wake up with plenty of coals left .

Just found your channel, we are Canadian's in New Zealand. You are having an amazing Van life.
If folks are concerned about you, then they care. So safe travels
1+2 would allow you to run two batteries in parallel. You could hook your starter battery to one 1 and your house battery to 2 and the output to your your starter system. You'd normally leave it on 1. If your starter battery died or just needed a jump, you could put it on 1+2 and "jump" it from your house battery, or just switch over to 2 and use your house battery to start your vehicle. Assuming the voltages are the same, which yours aren't so...
I do this on my boat. Trolling motor has a separate battery, still lead acid though. If the starter battery died I could start the boat with the other battery with the flip of a switch.
I now live in the Canadian Rockies. Part of my school's education program oh so many decades ago was survival training on the Coastal Mountains of BC. More recently in the Rockies part of my daughter's high school curriculum was living a week in wilderness survival training ... living at 1,800 meters (6,000 feet) in 4 meters (12 feet) of snow in January. The kids saw it as a huge party but it was learned skills that will last them a lifetime. I don't know if these programs are offered in all areas but our schools teach you to live in the wilderness, cook, sew, build a fire, etc.

Hey Foresty! Great vid. Something that has helped me with keeping firewood dry is storing it next to a big tub of DampRid. This also helps remove moisture from the van. I normally let the firewood sit over night next to the tub and you'll get a pretty good amount of moisture collection. Hope it helps, keep on keeping on!

That 1+2 setting would effectively join the positive terminals of the vehicle battery and the 200Ah Lithium in the back. If either battery was at a significantly different level of charge to the other you would get some (possibly a lot) of current flow in the system - hopefully you have fuses/breakers that are rated lower than the smallest cable in the system or things ma6get “warm”. The other thing to watch out for is if the B2B kicks in with the engine running and you have the 1+2 setting selected. The vehicle in charge mode would put out a far higher voltage than the B2B output (configured for Lithium) would expect. Not sure if the magic smoke that all electronics run on would be released at that moment, but you also have the issue of the full alternator output wanting to head for the much lower resistance lithium battery (depending on what the internal BMS) but still probably not good.
The only situation where you may need to use the1+2 position is if the vehicle starter battery goes flat. You again run the risk of large currents overloading the cables as you try to transfer power from the lithium into the vehicle battery - far safer if you have a mains vehicle battery charger and run that from the inverter, unless your lithium is also near flat.... and then I’d probably still call a tow truck.
Probably best to re-label the 1+2 setting as NO!

FF don't listen to the crap about pine creating more creosote than hardwood, that's a myth, you are absolutely correct it's the moisture content that is the key factor in reducing creosote and getting nice hot fires, and with that being the case one of the best types of wood you can find in the bush that will have the lowest moisture content is "Beetle kill" Lodgepole pine. Research it yourself, the way that tree dies from the blue bacteria the beetle introduces into the outer layer of the tree prevents the moisture absorbed through the roots of the tree from going up the trunk and into the branches of the tree and essentially the tree dies by desiccation. Look for standing dead trees where the tree has been dead long enough the needles have already turned gray, if the needles are still orange the tree will likely have > 25% moisture content. Idealy you want the wood you burn in your stove to have < 20% moisture content. Trees that have already fallen on the ground generally have higher moisture content than standing dead trees because of their proximity to the ground and the fact that they are exposed to and receive more moisture from the rain and snow. I repeat, look for standing dead beetle kill lodgepole pine with gray needles, they will be the ones that have been dead the longest and dried (seasoned) the most.
