I've been playing the laminate Ping Eye 2 ever since I bought it in 1984. Any thought of upgrading to modern clubs was dismissed from my mind years ago when I took a lesson from Shawn Clement. After my lesson said "I love those woods. Do you mind if I hit a few shots?" He took my laminated Ping 3 wood and hit half a dozen balls, smacking each one almost 300 yards, dead straight with a slight draw. His expression was was like a kid with a new toy when he handed it back to me and said "the feeling is fantastic when you hit these clubs. I really miss them."
TGIF!!! I have the driver, 3,4 and 7 woods. Love love love the 7 wood. Driver I hit ok but the 3 wood for me has always just been a low way too low bullet. Other then the 7 wood they are sadly just dust collectors. I have several Wood Bros woods. My absolute favorite and my everyday gamers. Well done Mr. Vintage Golfer.
I bought one of these in very good condition last year for $10 and immediately switched out my Wilson Staff Tour Block driver in my vintage bag. The Zing is very easy to hit and I can get pretty good distance out of it
Glad you did a video on these i got a set of 4 of these woods for around $10 on ebay seem to have a draw bias for me. Those are most likely sky marks on the crown though, probably tee'd it up too high.
Again another great video! I play a Ping laminated 5 wood in my bag on occasion. I have a few of the laminated woods from Ping along with a few sets of Ping Zing and i3 irons. The 5 wood is still a gamer and easy to hit off the deck. Very predictable as for carry and ball flight. Like you said not the greatest looking woods but beauty is as beauty does, they just work. stay safe
Spent a few minutes yesterday on the Practice Ground. So easy to hit straight or shape. Minimal spin. Great sound Wonderful. Will be playing at 11 with Eye 2 woods and Karsten III irons. The magic of Ping is with luck I still be round in 80 forty years after I first used Ping clubs. PS Last week I bought Ping Zing 1 3 5 woods from the US, and so an interesting comparison to be made.
I have a mint set of 1,3,5 Blonde Zings w Aldila graphite shafts. I take them out once in awhile and love them. The feel is the wood equivalent to a forged mizuno. You can feel it compress. They're pure magic. Are they shorter than my VW on on a stick Callaway driver? Yes, but not much. 10-15 yards. Will I sell them? Never.
I have the 1, 3, 4, 5, and 7. Have not played with them for a long time. Just cleaned them up today and plan on getting back at it. Until someone convinces me to spend hundreds of dollars to replace them with the new hybrids, I am going to continue using them as they are almost like new.

I have those exact woods in 1,3,& 5,also PING ZING Blonde 1,3,& 5.Funny I also have Spaulding Executive laminated woods (1977-78) that have a unique shape kinda toe heavy with large insert.
I started playing with Delta mark IV blades and brown colored laminated woods. I still have the 9-iron and the 5-wood. I remember seeing someone playing a PING Zing wooden driver and I hated the look of if. I never hit my driver or spoon straight but the 5-wood was/is magical. The 5-wood would go 220 from every lie possible. Have you played with Delta clubs?
Great video. So, if you haven't already read Dan Jenkins "The Dogged Victims of Inexorable Fate" you absolutely have to. You'll have like a six part backswing if you don't! lol. just kidding. You love the game, you’ll be glad you did.
Seems to me that for wooden drivers etc. you really want to focus on persimmon woods - like MacGregor and Powerbilt of that era a bit more so than Ping. However the Ping Blonde woods are absolutely gorgeous!
US Persimmon was becoming rare by that point and the quality suffered, especially in tightness of grain/ density. The Cleveland classics were awesome until the end though.
Homely but groundbreaking. Laminated maple had a COR near 0.83 vs persimmon. Head shape designed to deliver mass anti-slice. Used them for years. Recently got a great condition 1/3/5/7 set of blonde Zings I use for fun. The 3 wood still plays as well as anything today at my SS (around 95mph for 3 wood). See if you can find an ISI Tour driver. 45 inch graphite shaft, plastic sole insert for perimeter weighting... monstrous. Been looking for another one for years...
I'll never have a Ping club of any description in my bag. The whole ethos of Ping is to make the game as easy as possible, to remove the need for skill to hit shots. Golf is supposed to be a difficult game, it takes time to master, that's its beauty and attraction. I don't want a club that does the work for me, If that were the case I wouldn't be playing vintage clubs!
So you only play vintage blade irons and actual persimmon woods only? And then what about balls? I’m assuming your only gaming vintage balls, shoes, clothing, and always walking and never using a golf cart. Sports and technology are always changing, which is why you don’t see basketball players wearing chuck taylors on the court anymore. Club technology has changed for hundreds of years! Maybe you could go extreme and replicate the earliest known equipment and play on a course that was maintained like it was way back in the day. So I suppose every pro golfer is just a sham and a phony because they use modern equipment? Every golf equipment manufacturer has always tried to come out with the latest and greatest idea. Ping was just better at doing it first.

Yes, old putters too, bladed irons from the 1930s through to the 1980s, persimmon or laminated maple woods unless the course is wet in which case I’ll play period ABS/polymer headed woods or early metal headed woods (the first metal headed woods that were smaller than wooden woods) so that the wooden heads aren’t damaged by water ingress. Vintage balls are too hard to find to play all the time but I’ll try and play several rounds a year like this. I’d love it if they made a ball that behaved like the old balatas but there’s no money there so nobody will. Agreed that sports and technology are always changing. Golf had GRADUALLY evolved over the last couple of hundred years but since the arrival of titanium headed woods and low spinning balls it’s jumped too quickly and the courses weren’t designed for it so the game is now one-dimensional. I do play hickory too but not the old long-nosed clubs with featherie balls as they’re too rare/expensive. Sham and phony are your words, however, I would say that today’s Pros don’t need the full skillset that golfers of 30 plus years ago had to have in order to compete. I agree that manufacturers are always trying to steal an edge or make the game easier and that Ping have been one of the best at this, but that doesn’t mean I have to like them or agree with the results. Those Ping woods remind of the girl who was ugly in high school and years later was pretty. Only thing is, those clubs never got pretty. The biggest slicer in the world couldn’t make those go right.

I just bought a set of four of these today at Salvation Army. They’re in rough condition but I can’t wait to try them out.

I love the looks! But I grew up with them. Love the 3, 5&7 easy off the deck for me. Nice vid as usual

Just bought a great looking blonde ping zing 5 wood for $8, not an eye 2 but the blonde version is sooo beautiful
