I started getting back into golf last year after a 20 year hiatus. I used my Ping Zing 2 driver from back then. That thing is hard to hit. I then used my son's driver out of his old Costco set and found out how forgiving these big drivers are now. I hit it great, but I wanted my own and something newer. I settled on an unused Callaway Mavrik regular version from Dick's. It was heavily reduced in price and it was new with an adjustable hosel. I can really smash the ball with it. I am very pleased with it.

Fantastic video. I’ve been looking for something exactly like this that gives specific recommendations on older clubs that are still very playable. Would love to see one on irons sets!

This is a reasonable and accurate advice. Yup!

I suspect that if a golfer got a driver from the "try golf" list, that person might well find that this would be a fine club for all of their golfing career.

Ping G10 rules bro, I've tried all the latest and greatest but all the new bells and whistles can not remove my old G10 from my bag 👍

Terrific advice all around. Personally I wouldnt worry about the grip as that can be changed for 10ish bucks at most golf stores or sporting good shops and honestly the grip and how it feels/looks can be a big influence over how you feel about the club.

Good suggestions. In my experience buying used drivers I've found it helpful if I can identify the kick point of the shaft. My preference was for a middle kick point, but since I've gotten older (77 y.o.) I now prefer a low kick point which helps to get the ball up higher. Some drivers will label the kick point and suggested ball speed (if you know that) on their shafts along with the flex.

I'm new to golf and get myself a Taylormade R5 dual with a stiff shaft for $40 and I love it.

That is a great deal! I love the R5, it looks like it has jet engines or something.

Upgraded from a Nike Dymo to a TaylorMade M4 for $130. Only played one round with it cause I actually fractured my fibula during the round but I'm itching to get back out there. As far as where to buy used clubs, look at Golf Roots. They're a small business located near Dallas, Tx with amazing prices.

@ it was raining on and off all day. Finished playing a hole and walking back to the golf cart down a hill I slipped. My leg bent backwards instead of me landing on my butt, and immediately my ankle was hurting. I thought it was just a bad sprain. 2 days later x rays confirmed the fracture. Let's just say I invested in golf shoes after that 🤣

This is insightful. I have picked up over the years and they are still in my bags. The one thing that I find daunting is how to select the right shaft as there are so many on the market. It’s like a Chinese restaurant menu! Too many choices. That’s one reason I’ve never gotten fitted for new clubs. Instead I play vintage clubs because I don’t want to go through the hassle of having to sort through hundreds of shaft choices. And then what happens if I “outgrow” the shafts that I bought as I improve?

Skip the driver altogether if you're a full on beginner, at least on the course, lol! Think short irons and short fairway woods (5, 7, 9). Those are your freind.

TaylorMade Burner would be the best starting point. The Ping G series, Cleveland HiBore, Callaway X or Bertha, Cobra AMP, all hard to go wrong. Changing grips is super easy with an air compressor. Getting some cheap 360 grips is very handy because if you do put one on a driver with an adapter you can rotate it without the logo messing you up. Star Sidewinder is my choice... Plain, feel good, last forever.

While titleist driver adaptors never changed, their fairway wood and hybrid adaptors have. 910 fw and hy have different necks than the rest of titleist. In case of wanting a matching wood and hybrid

    1. If you're brand new, I honestly would avoid playing a driver. It's a net negative Club until you learn how to use it. An indisputable law of golf is the lower the loft, the more difficult the club is to hit and the more variance in the shots Direction.
Start with a 5 wood as your lowest lofted club and hit your tee shots with it. You will enjoy yourself more and have less frustration. Thank me later.
If you're dead set on having a driver though, best bang for buck is most definitely cobra drivers. Many of them from as recent as 2021 can be had for under $100

What model persimmon would be a good first one for getting into the hobby

    • @TheVintageGolfer
      @TheVintageGolfer  11 дней назад +2

Great question, I should make a video about this. Without checking prices on Ebay, my first impression is to point to the 80's persimmons. Cleveland Classic, MacGregor remakes and the Toney Pena Mod 1 or Mod 2 persimmons. If you can get into 50's or 60's persimmons for the same price, do that.
There is also collecting vs using, which, opens a can of worms.
      Thanks for watching!

I’m new to golf and live in Wisconsin too. What’s a good way to practice throughout the winter? I actually live about 10 minutes from the PGA store.

Indoor golf seems to be the way to go. PGA Tour Superstore had a $300 year pass to their practice bays. 1 hr a day. X golf is also fun. I also know someone with an indoor simulator at their home. If you happen upon the perfect answer for you let us know! Good question and thanks for watching!
