Ping eye 2 woods and irons . The first set of clubs I bought with my first 3 paychecks back in 1985. Probably the best clubs I ever had. Gave them to my son and he traded them to a friend for a set of Mizuno's. The fellow is still playing them. Great clubs. Love your videos.
I used to use Ping Eye 2 clubs (black dot). The color of the dot refers to the lie angle. The groove on the back of the irons is to help the club through thicker grass. I won a club championship with my Ping Eye 2s. Irons have an odd shape and I am no longer used to using them.. just too odd looking for me now.
Ping's color code system measure distance from the ground to ones wrist. If a person is between 5' 7" and 6' 1" and the distance between the ground and ones wrist is ~34", the blue dot clubs are in order. 33"s would suggest the black dots. Black is standard, blue is 1 degree upright. What's the difference between Ping Eye's and Ping Eye 2s? I have an older set of Karsten 3s. In the mid '70s, folks must have looked at the Karsten 3s and thought an alien left them here! The set was $1200 in 1976!
I know the likeable daft northerner is kind of your thing but you don't need to lay it on quite so thick. Ping Eye 2s are probably one of the most important clubs ever made and certainly one of the most well-known.
Funny. They came out in '83. The Eye 2 woods are laminated maple, not persimmon. The color dot signifies lie angle relative to ones height. The blue dot is 3/4" upright; black is standard, etc.
I still have my first driver from 35 years ago its called a Tour Edge 2 wood literally ... 225 straight every time . its a complete different swing from the titlest 917 I use. Great creative video .., its like you are on a rediscovery of golf journey
Came across this video and really enjoyed it. 3 weeks ago, I picked up a used set of Ping I3+ irons , 3-W for $120. I had them regripped and they are in wonderful shape. I have played a couple rounds with them. Today I picked up a set of Ping woods exactly like you are using there. Ping Eye 2 (1, 3, 5 and 7) they are in great condition and I went ahead and had these regripped. I can''t wait to take them out and play a round with them. Got to hit the sweet spot with these I think.
Ping eye2+ irons were the turning point in iron design and although irons since look different, there is no performance difference as proved by your toe shot onto the par 3. Also the JZ shafts in these irons were the finest produced by Ping. Other than driver technology and the ball, nothings changed in 30 years. Oh, maybe writing a 6 on a 5 iron. Nice playing.
Chris I agree. I started using persimmons and ping eye 2s. Massive difference and these old.irons are still great. I demoed the old a new and its kinda messed up that the clubs just have a different number on them. So I just dont get it with the new stuff. Old clubs and persimmons are fun and challenging to play!
I bought one of those Ping Eye drivers from Bude Golf club and it used to go like a rocket. It was 40 years ago though ! There are plenty of Eye 2 irons still in play. one of their best ever models. You chose well !! It was not a persimmon driver, it was laminated !
I played the best golf of my life with a set of Ping Eye 2 blacks. Had several rounds in the mid 60's, thought I'd change clubs and shoot lower scores, didn't work out lol
The ping eye twos I think came out in the 80s. I was a caddy then and everyone had them. I believe the wood is a laminated wood, not solid persimmon. Great clubs.
The Ping Eye 2 are still the best selling clubs of all time, which explains why everyone had them back then. Lots of current YT reviews show they still perform as well as new clubs with the lofts being common. The Eye 2's had standard lofts from back in the late 80's, newer clubs have their lofts strengthened (lowered) to get "more distance".
Been watching your videos for a little while now and have to say love your channel, you sir are as real as they come. Nothing goofy just golf and very funny comentary. My first time ever playing was with my uncle and his ping eye2's. He had irons, driver, and 7wood. Loved the game ever since and bought a set of eye2's red dots with jz shafts couple months ago. He told me the price and I jumped at the deal. Heck eye2's can still hang I've seen it first hand. The pw and sw can be deadly if ya learn the feel of them. Thanks for yhe videos
Oh man I used to play the eye II's with there square grooves, and the Titlist Balata balls....you could spin the hell outta em, but it took shavings off the ball every full swing. No lie you had to clean the golf ball shavings out of the grooves! G>
As you know now Liam, the Ping driver used is laminated maple, persimmon wood was phased out in the UK in the 1960s because it was prone to absorb moisture and split, especially if it wasn't seasoned long enough. The laminated maple more or less solved the problem and was only gradually replaced when metal woods hit the scene.
Ping Eye 2 drivers were made of laminated maple, not persimmon. With laminated maple it was much easier to control moisture content during manufacture. They were actually better than persimmon although golfers wanted the persimmon since they didn't know that. The maple was also much less likely to crack or split.
Nice vlog to end the year Liam, thanks for some great output and loads of belly laughs (mainly at the Dick). I played Chorlton 20-25 years ago in a Charity with Paddy Crerand and you had a tame Fox then.
Epic my arse, are you sure that you haven’t got them clubs or old man John at Doncaster lol, thanks for all your great vlogs & all your laughs & support, hope you & all the the family have a great Christmas 🎄 & happy new year cheers the Todd family
I played with Ping eye 2 clubs in the 80s and loved them, then I went on to Ping i3 clubs!! Must have had 12 sets of clubs since then. Enjoyed the Vlog.
New to your vlogs Liam. Love 'em. (Almost as much as my Ping Zing 2's) A refreshing change to the usual reviews I'm used to. Keep up the good work. Gotto go, got a lot of catching up to do!!
I used those clubs. Got them circa 1980. Blue dot is .75 degrees upright. I used green dot (2.25 upright) for more than 10 years and absolutely loved them. Just note the woods were not persimmon which is a single block of wood. Ping made laminated woods. You can see this easily looking at the face.
Just goes to show it's not the club's but the golfer that matters. And custom fitting you've just kicked that into touch. Have a brilliant Christmas and New Year and that goes for all the golf mates as well.
Hey Liam! Quit slating the pings! 😉 I just sold my set for £100... Bought second hand for £120 twenty years ago. These clubs are around 35 years old And at the time these were cutting edge! I love them. Now got calloway xr steelheads which are a world's apparent. But they will never last aslong as tge pings!! Great video matey! Keep up the good work!
GOLF VLOGS UK they were matey!! Keep up the content! I've been golf deprived over Christmas! Bloody rain up here in Scotland!! You guys ever play on a simulator? Trying to convince the wife it's a good idea. Funny enough she isn't so keen!!
Ping eye 2 irons 1983 i think, the blue dot is lie angle for people over 6ft, got an eye 2, 1 iron that ive only just learnt to hit straight after 2 months. Pretty fun club.
Nice. You make golf look easy. I use that driver and an old Hogan. Its very tough to hit the Ping 3 wood, but have a McGregor 4 wood which is helpful. Always loved the Muirfield Lite clubs.
Still enjoyed watching this again as my eye2s went back into the bag. You should do the same and cute those horror Lucy lockets...what's the music, like to know!
Very enjoyable. Older irons will go just as well as what we use today, the only thing is they won't be as forgiving. Hope you and family had a great Christmas.
Happy Christmas Liam.I have a set of 1988 seve supremo irons that i take out now and then. The only thing i have to do is club up 2 clubs to allow for the extra loft.Ping eye twos will be early 80's clubs .
i'm sure loads of people have already told you, but Ping Eye woods were never persimmon, they were laminate which is a completely different thing & far from being old 'rubbish' Ping Eye 2 irons were and probably still are right up there as the best irons ever made.
I remember playing Ping Eye 2’s Black Dot (Standard) a long time ago and the Wood looked pretty familiar too! Great scoring by the way, they’re keepers. I hope You and your Family and all of the Golf Mates have a fantastic Christmas and New Year. Lots more of the same next year Liam - Cheers Mate 👏👍🤓🤓🤓🎥🎥🎥.
Great video Liam, my old man still actually uses the ping eye 2 irons and still hits them as well and as long as I hit my ap2's. Plays no driver, hits 3 iron off every tee just about and still plays off 13. Great clubs, iv got them down as over 35 years old. What a set of clubs! Keep doing what your doing, great content, great fella. Happy Xmas to you and yours!
Playing ping eye 2 orange dot and a Powerbuilt Citation persimmon driver....looking at Linksoul Persimmon woodset new made in Kentucky ...beautiful woods
Great idea Liam. I think I might play with my Dad's old Lynx Master Model set. He got that set custom fit in in 1975 I think. I know I had just started playing golf...and I think I was around 13 or so. The set has 1, 3, 5 woods in persimmon and the irons run from 2 to PW. He also has a old Arnold Palmer Brass Blade putter. I'm looking forward to playing them. Probably need some grips first though.
I've a library of clubs, from literally ancient to modern, and much in between. Some aren't for playing, but plenty are. Playing old persimmon woods is a challenge, but doable for the average player. Blades from the 50s and 60s require a high-quality strike, there's so little forgiveness. The older clubs feel better with balls from their era, they weren't designed to hit today's balls. Hitting a balata ball 'off the screws' with a persimmon wood is an unknown pleasure to 99% of today's golfers. Like your channel, new subscriber, keep up the good work.
You picked the most popular and successful irons ever produced and the Zebra putter is the fore runner of everything Odyssey putter ever made. Tim Herron won the Colonial Invitational about ten years ago using those Eye2 irons. The only thing is the lofts are a club or two weak compared to today’s clubs. Your 8 Iron there is really a nine iron. The driver isn’t a persimmon btw,it’s laminated
I loved my old wooden woods especially my 4 wood could hit it loads of different ways draw, fade, high low etc. fantastic clubs used to hit my 1 wood 245yards now hit my epic 260 is that so much gain in 25 years?
Liam, that wasn't a persimmon driver, sorry. It was a laminate driver made out of maple. Would love to see you hit a real persimmon driver though. If you can find a Powerbuilt Citation driver, you'll be able to tell the difference, those were the best! Great score buddy!
Here in the US, Louisville Golf still makes persimmons. I have driver, 3 wood and 5 wood. I never use them anymore, but I do take them to the range sometimes because they're so great to hit. Great sound and feel.
I was going to say the same thing. Ping used Maple. Actually revolutionized the laminating process with that club. Persimmon is so much more pretty. In my Sr. year in High School 1980-1981, I averaged 285 yds off the tee with a Rawlings Oil Hardened Persimmon.
PING Eye 2 first introduced in 1982, but the models with the square grooves that had the USGA and the R&A get their shorts in a twist were made between 1985 and 1990. I believe you can STILL custom order a set of Eye 2s from PING, but they will have the now legal grooves, as only the ones manufactured before 1991 were "grandfathered." PING Blue Dot means 1 Degree Upright. My first woods (1985) were Wilson 1200 LT. What condition were the grips on those clubs in? MERRY CHRISTMAS!!! 🎄
I used to have a driver like that Liam, think the ping eye 2 irons were early eighties , they were a good set of clubs at the time . enjoyed the vlog something different and great to look round your club . hopefully if you have a golf day there in 2018 I would love to play on it . cheers and have a good one Liam
Great vlog Liam. Probably your best yet in my opinion. Not often found I something with just yourself and I like that. Gutted you didn't use that Ram Zebra putter though!
Black dots were/are “standard” by which other colors were either +/- upright or flat lies. The Ping color system and lie angles changed a few years ago but black remains standard.
Well in Liam , great to watch you and your channel develop so well over this year.looking forward to the year ahead, merry Xmas and get yourself up to scotland for a round ..
I got a Ping 3 wood and no word of a lie i get solid contact and 180 yards out of it every time. Iove the old fashioned Ping, Karsten Solhiem was no mug - he knew what he was doing.
Ping eye 2 woods are not actually Persimmon woods. They have hollow heads, the first of their kind, same idea that all new 'woods' are made using. Persimmon woods were solid wood
I mean not really Considering I play with multiple different set ups every year. I guess you can say I have a problem with buying golf clubs, although I would never buy new nor would I get fitted. Don't get me wrong I love the game, but I keep at that and that it is just a game. Sure I would like to try my hand at some tournaments this year, but I have hip and knee problems in which I need to hip replacements. And I'm only 39 but I am also 6"8'.
My first driver Ping eye 2, so easy to use I kept it in the bag as a fairway wood for at least two years after I bought my first steel head...a Mizuno I think?
Liam , I don’t usually comment but here are a few: 1. Love the Mother in Law shot 2. Why are you replacing a divot on a par 3? 3. What was that first putt on the last? 4. Keep it coming! Loving the videos 5. I’d like to see more of what Rick Shiels can do with your swing
Ping eye 2, I bought a new set back in 1988 or 89. They were way ahead of the times. The only problem I had with them was the first run of these clubs they got the metal a little too soft and the grooves of the PW closed up.
Great vlog Liam. Check out one of Pete and Ricks vids what they played second-hand sets from golfbidder .Rick gets giddy (as if?) over a set of copper ping eye2s . what putter did you really use?
It must have been so difficult playing with those clubs today Liam. Let’s be honest they look cleaner than your usual ones lol. Well played though my friend x
Good video Liam enjoyed that, I guess those irons around 30 years old and the blue dot I think is 2 degrees upright. Happy Christmas and a healthy new year.
I bought a Dunlop Blue Flash persimmon driver for a fiver in a charity shop a couple of years ago and the same model of 3 wood last year. Have tried them on the range a few times for a laugh with mates. For their age they are surprisingly effective if you hit it out of the middle, the sweet spot is tiny, though.
Tell you what Liam, you should forget your clubs more often, I know it was only 4 holes but you did great with those sticks! Well impressed, will you have a go at 18 holes with the same set, minus the sand wedge, that's only useful to poke the logs in the fireplace. ,😁🍺
Blue dot is one degree upright, these are great clubs from the 80’s, nice video. When golfmates was at it’s best.
Ping eye 2 woods and irons . The first set of clubs I bought with my first 3 paychecks back in 1985. Probably the best clubs I ever had.

I own a set of ping blk eye 2
From lobwedge to 2 iron. Love
them and wouldn't change them.

Four years? Time flies. I found this video getting some information on the Ping Eye 2 irons. Neat to see old, original content.
I played the best golf of my life with a set of Ping Eye 2 blacks. Had several rounds in the mid 60's, thought I'd change clubs and shoot lower scores, didn't work out lol
Join the club , I wished I kept my pings too I have orange dot ping eye 2’s 1 to sw . Used to love them too.

Thank you Shane
I had Ping Eye 2s for years. Great clubs. PING was the first ones that were custom fit as far as I know
Nice VLOG Liam. Thanks for the showaround your club too. Well done on getting your name on the honours board several times too.
I don't know how I've missed this vlog but I agree with Rob,its one of your best, great content from the people's golfer..
Oh man I used to play the eye II's with there square grooves, and the Titlist Balata balls....you could spin the hell outta em, but it took shavings off the ball every full swing. No lie you had to clean the golf ball shavings out of the grooves! G>

The Ping Eye 2 7 wood is quite a club.
FYI, those are not persimmons. They’re laminated woods. Quite a difference.
Still good stuff tho....nice seeing golf brought back in time a bit....
New to your vlogs Liam. Love 'em. (Almost as much as my Ping Zing 2's) A refreshing change to the usual reviews I'm used to. Keep up the good work. Gotto go, got a lot of catching up to do!!
3:17 laughed out loud when the golf ball fell over
I used those clubs. Got them circa 1980. Blue dot is .75 degrees upright. I used green dot (2.25 upright) for more than 10 years and absolutely loved them. Just note the woods were not persimmon which is a single block of wood. Ping made laminated woods. You can see this easily looking at the face.
What lovely old buildings.

Hey Liam! Quit slating the pings! 😉
I just sold my set for £100...
Bought second hand for £120 twenty years ago. These clubs are around 35 years old And at the time these were cutting edge! I love them. Now got calloway xr steelheads which are a world's apparent. But they will never last aslong as tge pings!!
Great video matey! Keep up the good work!

Ping eye 2 irons 1983 i think, the blue dot is lie angle for people over 6ft, got an eye 2, 1 iron that ive only just learnt to hit straight after 2 months. Pretty fun club.
1982
Nice. You make golf look easy. I use that driver and an old Hogan. Its very tough to hit the Ping 3 wood, but have a McGregor 4 wood which is helpful. Always loved the Muirfield Lite clubs.
Laughed at this, played the eye 2s for years until i bought some ping zings which i still use today...i think i got them in 95. Great vlog thou
Still enjoyed watching this again as my eye2s went back into the bag. You should do the same and cute those horror Lucy lockets...what's the music, like to know!
I'm not the only one who uses ancient clubs !
Very enjoyable. Older irons will go just as well as what we use today, the only thing is they won't be as forgiving. Hope you and family had a great Christmas.
80’s vintage Pings
merry Christmas and thanks for the all your hard work. have really enjoyed watching.
Happy Christmas Liam.I have a set of 1988 seve supremo irons that i take out now and then. The only thing i have to do is club up 2 clubs to allow for the extra loft.Ping eye twos will be early 80's clubs .

Exactly what I enjoy watching on you tube fun golf ( mother in law shot ) 😂😂😂😂
I remember playing Ping Eye 2’s Black Dot (Standard) a long time ago and the Wood looked pretty familiar too! Great scoring by the way, they’re keepers. I hope You and your Family and all of the Golf Mates have a fantastic Christmas and New Year. Lots more of the same next year Liam - Cheers Mate 👏👍🤓🤓🤓🎥🎥🎥.
Great irons ping eye 2. I'm gamed them from mine teens to my 20,s. My first decent make iron set 👍⛳
Always enjoy these videos, done with humour and just like playing with a golfing pal.
The blue dot indicates 1 degree upright and if I remember correctly if your clubs are too upright you will tend to hit them to the right.
Great video Liam, my old man still actually uses the ping eye 2 irons and still hits them as well and as long as I hit my ap2's. Plays no driver, hits 3 iron off every tee just about and still plays off 13. Great clubs, iv got them down as over 35 years old. What a set of clubs! i have a old set of eye2s i bought new in 84, my grandsons like to hit rocks with them out in the field when they come over
That first drive was pretty much spot on.
Playing ping eye 2 orange dot and a Powerbuilt Citation persimmon driver....looking at Linksoul Persimmon woodset new made in Kentucky ...beautiful woods

The old days back in the UK Thanks mate Merry Christmas to you and all of our Golf Mates.
Those ping irons are classic. Look funky but functional
good vlog.a merry xmas and a happy new year liam also to your family not forgetting all your fellow golf mates and the golfers at your club
I believe those ping woods are laminated maple not persimmon.
Liam, that wasn't a persimmon driver, sorry. It was a laminate driver made out of maple. Would love to see you hit a real persimmon driver though. If you can find a Powerbuilt Citation driver, you'll be able to tell the difference, those were the best! Great score buddy!
I was so proud when I saved up enough money for a set of Citation woods. Best looking woods ever made.
I still have a mint condition Citation driver. Dynasty shaft. Surprisingly easy to hit and feels amazing.
Lucky You. It was so long ago I can't remember what I traded mine in or who I sold them to. Pity...Wish I had them back.
Here in the US, Louisville Golf still makes persimmons. I have driver, 3 wood and 5 wood. I never use them anymore, but I do take them to the range sometimes because they're so great to hit. Great sound and feel.

Great vlog Liam. Probably your best yet in my opinion. Not often found I something with just yourself and I like that.
Gutted you didn't use that Ram Zebra putter though!
Just shows you the level of golf you're playing these days! well done Liam great Video.
Good fun Liam. I played Ping Eye2 woods and irons 25 years ago. Merry Christmas
GOLF VLOGS UK Liam, the woods were new in 1982 and I bought the irons second hand in 1989
Liam, you continue to play the game the way it should be played. Keep having fun.
The color of the dots on pings had to do with lie angle.
Still play with a set of ping eye 2s, great clubs, colour is the ping fitting system. Mine are orange dot. Love them.
That first driver that you were considering using and thought was illegal was also left handed! All the best and thanks Liam.
It’s not illegal is it? I was using a R5 driver about 4 or 5 years ago.
The color of the dot indicates the lie of the the club ... from upright to laid back. I think the black was the most upright !
Black dots were/are “standard” by which other colors were either +/- upright or flat lies. The Ping color system and lie angles changed a few years ago but black remains standard.
What a clubby.A real open fire roaring ...snooker room rammed at weekends he says.Really lucky
It’s been a great year. Guys. Keep it up happy new year
Well in Liam , great to watch you and your channel develop so well over this year.looking forward to the year ahead, merry Xmas and get yourself up to scotland for a round ..
That's what I use got 3 through wedges never even look at other irons hold on to your eye 2s you'll have more money for other clubs
I played that Ram Zebra putter a few times last year. It's a solid putter. I would consider it a classic.
I have a set of all classic Ram clubs that I take out every once in a while.
Happy Christmas to all Golfmates, Keep up the great work Liam!! all the best for 2018 lads
Love my Copper ISI's ......... Awesome Clubs
My first driver Ping eye 2, so easy to use I kept it in the bag as a fairway wood for at least two years after I bought my first steel head...a Mizuno I think?
Liam , I don’t usually comment but here are a few:
1. Love the Mother in Law shot
2. Why are you replacing a divot on a par 3?
3. What was that first putt on the last?
4. Keep it coming! Loving the videos
5. I’d like to see more of what Rick Shiels can do with your swing
I still have a Ram Zebra putter like yours. Graham Marsh used it on the Epga. He got 7 birdies on the trot at Epsom in the 1970's
Good blog that pal and you answered my question Weather you'd won any board comps cheers.👍👍
Great vlog pal. Merry Christmas to you and you family and all the best for the new year 🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓
Not bad for old clubs. Thanks for explaining the mother in law shot again lol
Ping eye 2 - old? Now that makes me feel REALLY old!
I yes I forget to mention I also had a Zebra putter at one time. If I remember right you could take the bottom plate off and mess with the weights.
Fantastic vlog, have a great Christmas and happy new year.
LOL! it looks like my dad lent you his clubs. Love it.
Ping eye 2, I bought a new set back in 1988 or 89. They were way ahead of the times. The only problem I had with them was the first run of these clubs they got the metal a little too soft and the grooves of the PW closed up.
Great stuff
GOLF VLOGS UK When are you coming to Scotland next? :)
GOLF VLOGS UK Let me know. :)
Tell you what Liam, you should forget your clubs more often, I know it was only 4 holes but you did great with those sticks!
Well impressed, will you have a go at 18 holes with the same set, minus the sand wedge, that's only useful to poke the logs in the fireplace. ,😁🍺
GOLF VLOGS UK That'll be a belter of a vlog, look forward to seeing that👍👍🍺
