Ping eye 2 woods and irons . The first set of clubs I bought with my first 3 paychecks back in 1985. Probably the best clubs I ever had.
Gave them to my son and he traded them to a friend for a set of Mizuno's. The fellow is still playing them. Great clubs. Love your videos.

Oh man I used to play the eye II's with there square grooves, and the Titlist Balata balls....you could spin the hell outta em, but it took shavings off the ball every full swing. No lie you had to clean the golf ball shavings out of the grooves! G>

I bought one of those Ping Eye drivers from Bude Golf club and it used to go like a rocket. It was 40 years ago though ! There are plenty of Eye 2 irons still in play. one of their best ever models. You chose well !! It was not a persimmon driver, it was laminated !

Came across this video and really enjoyed it. 3 weeks ago, I picked up a used set of Ping I3+ irons , 3-W for $120. I had them regripped and they are in wonderful shape. I have played a couple rounds with them. Today I picked up a set of Ping woods exactly like you are using there. Ping Eye 2 (1, 3, 5 and 7) they are in great condition and I went ahead and had these regripped. I can''t wait to take them out and play a round with them. Got to hit the sweet spot with these I think.

I used to use Ping Eye 2 clubs (black dot). The color of the dot refers to the lie angle. The groove on the back of the irons is to help the club through thicker grass. I won a club championship with my Ping Eye 2s. Irons have an odd shape and I am no longer used to using them.. just too odd looking for me now.

As you know now Liam, the Ping driver used is laminated maple, persimmon wood was phased out in the UK in the 1960s because it was prone to absorb moisture and split, especially if it wasn't seasoned long enough. The laminated maple more or less solved the problem and was only gradually replaced when metal woods hit the scene.

I played the best golf of my life with a set of Ping Eye 2 blacks. Had several rounds in the mid 60's, thought I'd change clubs and shoot lower scores, didn't work out lol

The ping eye twos I think came out in the 80s. I was a caddy then and everyone had them. I believe the wood is a laminated wood, not solid persimmon. Great clubs.

The Ping Eye 2 are still the best selling clubs of all time, which explains why everyone had them back then.
Lots of current YT reviews show they still perform as well as new clubs with the lofts being common. The Eye 2's had standard lofts from back in the late 80's, newer clubs have their lofts strengthened (lowered) to get "more distance".

Ping eye2+ irons were the turning point in iron design and although irons since look different, there is no performance difference as proved by your toe shot onto the par 3. Also the JZ shafts in these irons were the finest produced by Ping. Other than driver technology and the ball, nothings changed in 30 years. Oh, maybe writing a 6 on a 5 iron. Nice playing.

Chris I agree. I started using persimmons and ping eye 2s. Massive difference and these old.irons are still great. I demoed the old a new and its kinda messed up that the clubs just have a different number on them. So I just dont get it with the new stuff. Old clubs and persimmons are fun and challenging to play!

Been watching your videos for a little while now and have to say love your channel, you sir are as real as they come. Nothing goofy just golf and very funny comentary. My first time ever playing was with my uncle and his ping eye2's. He had irons, driver, and 7wood. Loved the game ever since and bought a set of eye2's red dots with jz shafts couple months ago. He told me the price and I jumped at the deal. Heck eye2's can still hang I've seen it first hand. The pw and sw can be deadly if ya learn the feel of them. Thanks for yhe videos

Ping's color code system measure distance from the ground to ones wrist. If a person is between 5' 7" and 6' 1" and the distance between the ground and ones wrist is ~34", the blue dot clubs are in order. 33"s would suggest the black dots. Black is standard, blue is 1 degree upright. What's the difference between Ping Eye's and Ping Eye 2s? I have an older set of Karsten 3s. In the mid '70s, folks must have looked at the Karsten 3s and thought an alien left them here! The set was $1200 in 1976!

I used those clubs. Got them circa 1980. Blue dot is .75 degrees upright. I used green dot (2.25 upright) for more than 10 years and absolutely loved them. Just note the woods were not persimmon which is a single block of wood. Ping made laminated woods. You can see this easily looking at the face.

Ping Eye 2 drivers were made of laminated maple, not persimmon. With laminated maple it was much easier to control moisture content during manufacture. They were actually better than persimmon although golfers wanted the persimmon since they didn't know that. The maple was also much less likely to crack or split.

You picked the most popular and successful irons ever produced and the Zebra putter is the fore runner of everything Odyssey putter ever made. Tim Herron won the Colonial Invitational about ten years ago using those Eye2 irons. The only thing is the lofts are a club or two weak compared to today’s clubs. Your 8 Iron there is really a nine iron.

I've a library of clubs, from literally ancient to modern, and much in between. Some aren't for playing, but plenty are. Playing old persimmon woods is a challenge, but doable for the average player. Blades from the 50s and 60s require a high-quality strike, there's so little forgiveness. The older clubs feel better with balls from their era, they weren't designed to hit today's balls. Hitting a balata ball 'off the screws' with a persimmon wood is an unknown pleasure to 99% of today's golfers. Like your channel, new subscriber, keep up the good work.

PING Eye 2 first introduced in 1982, but the models with the square grooves that had the USGA and the R&A get their shorts in a twist were made between 1985 and 1990. I believe you can STILL custom order a set of Eye 2s from PING, but they will have the now legal grooves, as only the ones manufactured before 1991 were "grandfathered." PING Blue Dot means 1 Degree Upright. My first woods (1985) were Wilson 1200 LT. What condition were the grips on those clubs in? MERRY CHRISTMAS!!! 🎄

Here in the US, Louisville Golf still makes persimmons. I have driver, 3 wood and 5 wood. I never use them anymore, but I do take them to the range sometimes because they're so great to hit. Great sound and feel.

I was going to say the same thing. Ping used Maple. Actually revolutionized the laminating process with that club. Persimmon is so much more pretty. In my Sr. year in High School 1980-1981, I averaged 285 yds off the tee with a Rawlings Oil Hardened Persimmon.

The color of the dot indicates the lie of the the club ... from upright to laid back. I think the black was the most upright !

Black dots were/are “standard” by which other colors were either +/- upright or flat lies. The Ping color system and lie angles changed a few years ago but black remains standard.

I still have a Ram Zebra putter like yours. Graham Marsh used it on the Epga. He got 7 birdies on the trot at Epsom in the 1970's

Liam , I don’t usually comment but here are a few:
    1. Love the Mother in Law shot
    2. Why are you replacing a divot on a par 3?
    3. What was that first putt on the last?
    4. Keep it coming! Loving the videos
    5. I’d like to see more of what Rick Shiels can do with your swing

I yes I forget to mention I also had a Zebra putter at one time. If I remember right you could take the bottom plate off and mess with the weights.

Ping eye 2, I bought a new set back in 1988 or 89. They were way ahead of the times. The only problem I had with them was the first run of these clubs they got the metal a little too soft and the grooves of the PW closed up.

I bought a Dunlop Blue Flash persimmon driver for a fiver in a charity shop a couple of years ago and the same model of 3 wood last year. Have tried them on the range a few times for a laugh with mates. For their age they are surprisingly effective if you hit it out of the middle, the sweet spot is tiny, though.
