My e5570 i7 6600u pre-installed with 1 M.2 SSD, with Win 10 Home on it (but system have water mark on it)
Recently I installed another M.2 SSD at the space provide for HDD, with new installation of Win 11 Pro (no more water mark after activation on Win 10 Home)
One PC with 2 SSD and 2 OS, and by pressing 【12】to select which OS to run 👍👍👍👍👍👍

You can as long as your motherboard supports it and most motherboards nowadays support at least up to 32GB.

Don't you think it's safer to remove the battery first? It's always safer to remove a laptop battery before removing a memory. Same thing to do for putting it back on

It's probably good to do it to be on the safe side. I've never had problems without removing it though.
