Should you buy a $15 Projector?? | Brookstone Keychain Projector Review

  • So I came across this projector in a Brookstone store in a mall one day while it was on sale for $15. You read that right its FIFTEEN DOLLARS. Its cheaper than lunch at a fancy restaurant that is. It was on clearance and I couldn't resist to pick it up and give it a try. So was it worth it? Can you use it for a second monitor for your windows or mac PC? Or is it actually a viable solution for a cheapo Netflix and video projector? Watch to find out!
Looks like Brookstone really was discontinuing it though as its no longer on their website now...

You complain about the pixels being too big but you have the tiny thing hella far away from the wall. You should really treat it like a short throw projector and don't put it so far from the wall to make a larger screen area then review it as having a "problem with bad pictures cause the pixels are too big" I give your review a 3/10
Yeah I reviewed your review you're welcome :)

Ayy it's better than i expected! It has battery too which is handy! The 240p resolution is a bit of a turn off, but for $15 that's not bad.
This is a good video! Make more of these cheap gadget videos for poor people like me!

A good use for this is art projects and holiday light shows. The relatively cheap cost and fidelity in such a small package allows the projector to be versatile and you could easily buy a whole bunch of these to do different effects or visuals. Definitely a cool gadget!

I tested a full-sized projector before, but they are not that great. The fan get's louder and louder over the years, and it heats the room up like a plasma tv.
I am thinking about modding a projector to use a LED instead of the bulb, but it is not as easy as it looks on the surface.

      @pizzaboxer 5 лет назад

the reason the fan gets louder is probably because you got some really cheap projector that doesn't even have a fan filter, and replacing the bulb with an LED won't be easy as the LED will certainly not be bright enough.

It is AMAZING for 15 dollars, I had one but gave it to a friend. Been looking for another for a year, once in a while one pops up on youtube for 30 bucks, and i just got one. I am looking for more. A projector on your keychain, how amazing is that? It is not to give you a 100 inch screen, it is designed to give you a 3 foot screen in a dark room, or a 12 inch screen if you are sitting by the wall. The nearest pocketable projector will cost you 100 bucks

It looks like it could be fun for movies but useless for pretty much anything else. And the screen on which it's being projected will affect the image. Since it's so cheap, it would be great for kids who want to watch TV or movies projected onto the wall.

A regular 100 watt light bulb is 1600 lumens.
So 100 lumens will ONLY work in a very dark room.
    This is 15 lumens.
But i had one, for 30 bucks it is a fun toy. Sadly there is no place to buy them now.

The only downside is you cannot use BlueTooth of WiFi. Because it's keychain model, you want use it to show videos from your smartphone. A separate HDMI cable is not very handy idea. You still need big thing to play videos, so the purpose of "portable" is little gone here. Unless you have good mobile HDMI player on battery power. No wireless playback possible.
Not sure if chromecast will work, because you need seperate USB power from powerpack.

  • @lepayen

That projector must have been seriously on sale, they must have wanted to get rid of it badly. The newer Brookstone projectors on Ebay are around $60 to $300 and they're similar quality only a bit bigger. Even despite the low resolution, the room really needs to be super dark, even another screens light can make it too dim. That and it should only be projecting to the size of the image on the screen selection page in respect to the image next to it for screen 1 which would show it with the proper pixel sizes for that resolution. instead of the pixels being stretched to epic proportions. Sure it can project larger, but that's only really good if you're across the room and can't see the pixels. Still, for $15, that's a major bargain.

why do you say its $15 . After scouring the internet (aka typing it into google shopping and an ebay search) I cant find any listed for under $50 . Hell yeah I would pay $15 for that- now what magical land do I gotta go to find it for that? Even if it was on a half off sale that would make it $30 which I would still , less enthusiastically, pay. Someone sold you a projector they stole for $15. That don't make it a $15 projector.
