    I’m in the first stages of decluttering and am always thrilled when I fill a trash bag and get rid of it - I think of it as “wow, my house is losing weight!”

    I just pulled out 11 fitted queen size sheets with spent elastic from my closet. I kept telling myself I would repair these sheets but i do not have a working sewing machine and I have been saying this for 10 years. Finally, I donated the sheets to a local animal shelter who uses the sheets to wrap around dog beds. I have not looked back and look forward to going through my comforters and donating some as well.

    Donate the sheets exactly how they are. Someone else will wash them anyway before they use them.

    As a Random act to realize my progress and feel and see the difference - I weigh the items before they leave the house - or if not able to weigh them by the box and or bags, I keep a mental count and sometimes guesstimate the weight based on the container size. This has been a Huge help to me. I literally have a TaNgiBLE figure to attach the items that are ‘weighing’ me down. Literally and figuratively. I feel and See the actual weight lifted!!

    Dawn- I have often thought why info I like this channel so much and I think the reason your channel is so different from so many others is because,
    1) I still feel like you are talking to us and with us and are not simply cranking out videos just to put them out. That you are really working through the process with us
    2) and this is a big one for me: you really take the time to explain the thinking behind the process. Every family and situation is different so if you only show us what you do then we are at a bit of a loss because our situation is different. But with your channel I can think through the process and then apply it to my situation
    3) You are a mother with a family! And you have indeed done an excellent job not making minimalism weird or unnatural.
    So many thanks!!! I have found your channel one of the, if not the most, helpful.
    Thank you from ~ Perth Australia 🇦🇺 Katie

    Dawn! This video is literally an answer to the prayer I said last night. I have been working and working on minimizing because you have truly inspired me and my life is changing. Last night i hit a wall because the stuff is piling up and i just dont want to take the jump to donate it. I am holding onto the “value” and the possibility of selling it. However I hate selling it! Anyways last night i felt defeated and I started searching your videos for this video! I couldnt find it because you hadnt posted it yet! So I prayed that you would talk about this. I see it as a true miracle. I NEEDED this!! Thank you for listening to God and answering my prayers. You will never know how big of an impact you have had on my life. I feel like we are friends.

    • @JanuaryLisa
      @JanuaryLisa 5 лет назад +6

      Elizabeth, let me encourage you to please take that stuff and donate it TODAY! It might be easy, and you will feel immediately better, lighter. Or it might be hard and you might feel regretful. But let me remind you that those feelings are from the enemy-if you’ve popped it into a box or bag, donate it! Bless someone else! Soon, the feeling of having a lighter, cleaner space will be enough encouragement to keep decluttering, I promise. 💚

    • @Melody-285
      @Melody-285 3 года назад +1

      Elizabeth - I feel that unless you have a lot of valuable stuff & really could use the mone, don’t hassle with selling it - people will expect to get it for next to nothing anyway - I like to donate to the church down the street - they have 3 or 4 rummage sales a year & sell things cheap to the community & use whatever money they do get for good causes - blessings to you

    Apparently my mom and sister have been watching these and just now told me about them! All 3 of us have the Sentimental Packrat Syndrome..
    We've lived in our wonderful house for 3 years now, and still have things sitting in boxes because of my mental clutter. I am SO excited and encouraged by your videos! I've already been gearing toward wanting to minimalize so your channel has come into my life at the perfect time! Plus, we thought we were moving but haven't yet, so, many of our things have been packed up sitting in the dining room. If we have gone almost a year without it, we obviously don't really need it.

    Congratulations on 100K! You have inspired me more than you can know. I work at home and had my office in the dining room, open to the rest of the house. After my mom's death three months ago, we finally went through her room, got it painted and cleaned, and now I have a beautiful office (with a door!). That caused shifts in every other room on the ground floor, and everything is so fresh and new. A clean slate everywhere I look! Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

    Dawn, you have helped me so much with my decluttering journey. I hear your voice asking, "When did you last use this? When do you plan on using it?" Those two simple questions keep me going. Just when I think I am finished, I find more to donate. I am doing this in small bites and have been dropping a box or two off to the local charity shop each week. I also remember being a young mom with little money and being thrilled to find snow pants for my little guy for 50 cents. It helps to remember that our discards can make a difference in another person's like. Thank you for inspiring me!

    I have been working on periodic dejunking for the past 20 years. I started hearing little bits about minimal living here and there, but nothing very informative. Then about 3 months ago RUclips recommended your house tour in my feed and I started watching it. My husband was sitting next to me (I normally don’t watch RUclips on my phone when my husband is in the same room, haha) and after a minute he asked me to restart it so we could watch it together. It started a conversation with him and in my head that I couldn’t let go of. Within a week I started my biggest purge I have ever undertaken. I’m not done. I feel I have so much left to do still that sometimes it feels overwhelming. But my house is so much easier to keep clean. And with 10 kids all at home still that is a huge victory for me! I have binge watched your videos from the beginning while I have worked on my projects to help keep me motivated and to help answer my questions. It’s been amazing to me how often the video I was watching would help me through the hurdles I was facing that day. Thank you for doing this channel. I have tried watching other minimalist videos on RUclips and I have to say they don’t help and inspire me like yours do. Maybe part of it is that I feel like I’m a messy and unorganized person, so I’m doing it for the same reasons you did. lol! Whatever the reason I’m so grateful I found your channel. Thank you again!

    I have been watching your videos for weeks/months now. I want to say “thank you” for everything, but mostly your honesty. You have put words to thoughts I’ve had about decluttering our house. Hearing about your experiences with “minimalism” and your tips inspired me to go farther and simplify our home too. Recently my husband has said our house has improved significantly, and he asked who you were. I asked “why, do you have a thank you to send?” He said, “yes, exactly” 😊
    So from both of us and our four small kiddos, a thousand thank-you s for sharing your work! …and I love your twin sister sharing the support of simple living in the bible as well. It really brings it home for me. I can’t thank you enough.

I’ve still a long way to go, but it feels great to be on the road to a happier life. My biggest hangup is sentimental items. I’m a sentimental person to begin with, but I feel like because I lost a parent when I was a child, I tend to want to hold on to the items that belonged to them even more because it makes me feel like I can connect with them more. Baby clothing is another hangup for me, I get so sentimental about them, but I obviously cannot keep every piece of baby clothing they ever wore. I’m working on detaching myself from these things, but it definitely isn’t easy. Also, you are so sweet, and it’s nice to see your genuine excitement over hitting 100k. Congratulations! That is a wonderful accomplishment!

    I just recently moved into an RV and I wondered how do I exist without all my STUFF? Your tips, directions and perky attitude has made this transition much easier! I went from happily married 5 bedroom, 2 story to divorced and a 2 bedroom apartment and now to an RV. It was sooo hard to donate some of my prized possessions. But I bit the bullet and did it. Thank You!

    I'm surprised people are saying you make it look easy. I feel like you are very realistic in your videos about what is hard and the struggles that you mention about giving certain things away. I feel like you have mentioned on more than one occasion about your process on giving things away that you bought but never used. Like that pillow it was either red or orange and you bought it for a dollar thinking you would use it but you didn't. And how you had to talk yourself into giving it away after keeping it for quite some time. That's realistic to me, that's real life. And you shared that with us. That helps me so much to see you talk about that and truly struggle with what to keep and what to give away. I think you're doing an awesome job at explaining explaining how the process works!

    Hello, Dawn. Over the last 40 years of marriage, my husband has been in full time or part time ministry as a church pastor. Moving several times has certainly helped us declutter. At the last move, we did remove MUCH stuff for donations. For the last several months, we have been living in a graciously loaned residence as we wait for where we may be moving next. Half of our possssions are literally still packed in boxes in closets and basements, mostly breakble well art, photos, special dishes, as I certainly did not want to unpack only to reback. We are living with only what we regularly use at this point in time. Yes, it does make cleaning easier. I will be interested to see what happens when we get settled and begin to unpack those boxes:) .....what goes and what stays! I enjoy your videos so much. They have given me great ideas and much food for thought. Congrats on this new milestone.

    Dawn, I have watched a lot of YT cleaning, organizing etc videos in the past 7 years since my son was born. Trying to juggle being a mom, wife and working outside the home is hard. Your videos have honestly given me the most ‘aha’ moments out of all the other channels I have watched. Simple, practical and efficient. Your channel is such a blessing to me, as I’m sure it is to the other 100K subscribers. Thank you for the time and effort you put into sharing your journey and knowledge with us! 🌻

    I just want to say thank you for starting this journey on RUclips . It has been a blessing. I started this journey about a month and a half ago after seeing a few of your videos early June 2019, Florida . I have been able to quickly decluttering every room in my house since then. I started with the bathroom one day and living room on an other. Then ended up working my way to each room. I even got rid of a whole storage unit I was making monthly payments on. My turning point was when you said I should see it as if those items are not serving their purpose and by me giving them away I allowed other people to make them useful. At first, I thought my husband was going to think I had gone mad but after he saw our closet with so much space and can see what he needed he realize this is livable, lol. I have gone through my house a second time and still kept getting rid of stuff or putting it in a “maybe keep” bin when I am not sure. That has really helped me get more along when other times I have gotten stuck. I have been giving myself time limits sometimes 15 -20 minutes other times two hours after watching the video. To really focus the time. I still have to finish the garage which is halfway still cluttered, probably go minimized the kids clothes again and paper declutter 2-3 huge boxes. I have learned to focus on the success and enjoy the journey for I am learning every day what my needs truly are and how to still keep it beautiful and enjoyable. I must say I feel better prepared for the school year and have found more time to spend with my kids instead of cleaning up. Thank you ....just the fact that I am spending more time with my kids is worth it. Thank you, shalom.

    I have a crazy decluttering issue that I had to overcome. I have been working on decluttering regularly for a while but when I would do a closet or anything I would make a trash, keep, donate to family, donate to friend, donate to hospital or office (magazines and puzzles) and donate to goodwill bags. I found that I did not have the time then to get the donations out to everyone timely so the piles would lay in corner stressing me so much. Finally had a talk with myself that my reason for decluttering was peace not anxiety. I have now started to give everything away to easiest location all at one time. My reasoning became my peace and once I had made decision to let something go it was no longer mine so it could go to one place and a higher power could find a way to get it to next owner. Decluttering for me had to stop being about taking on others individual needs (maybe selfish) rather the main reason which was a simple calm space and more peace of mind. I now do not even call friends and family and tell them to come get things in next 24 hours if they want them. However, if a friend or family member is at my house and comments they like something I have I quietly think do I need that item and if not give it to them on the spot. This takes away the quilt from my previous decision. Mind games against yourself can take all forms.
    P,S. Congratulations on 100,000 you deserve it so much.

    So we have a five-year-old and two-year-old twins which means that the whole decluttering process is always a completely fractured. I've gotten better at making the hard decisions but find I get very tired after a while by the sheer quantity of decisions. (This is probably made worse by the constant interruptions!) We've actually just organised a storage unit so we can get all the excess out of the house and start living more minimally and then I can go and sort through everything without interruption. I hate how much money the process is taking but we are fortunate that money is easier to find than time in this season of life. Thanks for your videos. It's Friday evening here in the UK and the kids are all asleep so I'm watching your channel to give me an enthusiasm boost for more decluttering this weekend. I love your humility, you deserve the 101K subscribers. Thanks.

    Glas cutting boards are terrible for your knifes anyways, they will get dull immediately so it is totally useless. We have 2 pair of sheets because I try to avoid using the dryer because it damages the fabric and it costs a lot in electricity so I dry the sheets outside on the washing line. Thank you for the ongoing motivation!

    Thank you for all your work on these videos. You and your sister are inspiring. My mom was prone to hoarding and I have been cursed with her logic about possessions. She passed away 2 years ago and Dad passed away last year. Almost all of their stuff ended up moving over to my house. I am drowning in boxes and bags and possessions. Congratulations! This decluttering is hard work and can be emotional too. Started this a year ago, hit a wall. Then in May we decided to get the house ready to list. We/I purged, decluttered so much! Boxed up and took a lot to storage. However, now the house is SO PEACEFUL like you said! Once we move we are downsizing and I can not imagine all the things in storage will have a home. So.... I am sure we will be decluttering again. :) Thank you for inspiring me.

    I love your honesty about getting away from the kids and not wanting to think about the sheets. That's so totally my life, too! I think sometimes you make decluttering look easy because you tackle such big jobs (like an entire basement). Congrats on 100k - you absolutely deserve it!!

    Hello Dawn, I just recently got on the Minimal ban wagon, and it so happened that I found your videos just when we were preparing to move ( downsize). What I can share in this short time for those that are struggling is this is not a fad its a new mentality and way of living. We need to think minimal and make it an everyday thought process as we navigate through our home. Also break it down in sections. I loved starting with the closet, then the kitchen, ete. Its really liberating. What's more this isn't just the being minimal at home. its relearning how we shop... Controlling our shopping and being mindful. I'm simply fascinated by this movement. Alicia, Miami, Florida. BTW if we are not mindful we can jump off the ban wagon, 😆. I love your videos. Guys I look forward to comments on how other ppl are handling this phenomena.
