Dawn doesn't talk about this but when we see her home and her furnishings, one thing that stands out to me is that she doesn't have busy patterns on her furnishings. If there is color it's a pop of color like the blue in her kitchen but no heavily patterned drapes, bedspreads, upholstery etc. This goes a long way to help a space feel calmer and less cluttered.

Yes! 😀😀😀 We painted about 5 years ago and didn't realize HOW cluttered the living room walls were until we had to unhang everything. Since then I have bare walls, but managed to balance out the feel of the room with our wall unit, purchased a leaning mirror, a few faux (🤣🤣🤣) tall plants. It's not perfect, but it works and the room feels so much better!

My house might be a little boring to some but it comforts me greatly. I’d rather have my “busyness” placed into photos around the house that reminds me of good times.

My husband was going to get us a new bed spread rustic cabin style. I told him we have to find a plainer one because that was way too busy for my brain. It stressed me out just looking at it. Even though it was beautiful there was just too much going on.

Coming from a person who loves rich pattern I still agree with you. (My house is carpeted antique Greek and Persian rugs and even patterned Italian tile.) However, I have a background in art and design, and there is a real skill to using and mixing colors and patterns in a way that looks luxurious and cozy, but still serene and calm (and easy to clean.)
If someone is attracted to pattern and it makes them happy, I suggest having a consult with an interior designer first. You can usually pay a reasonable fee for just a consult, you don't have to pay them to decorate your whole house for you, because, as you so wisely say, if the pattern isn't right, or the artwork on the wall isn't hung properly, it's going feel disjointed and therefore cluttered.

My friend gave me a tip for cutting down on Amazon buying that really works for me: Do not save your credit or debit card info on the site. If you have to enter your card info in every single time you buy something, it will really prevent you from making impulse purchases. It's shocking that I am actually that lazy, but it turns out I totally am!

I just permanently deleted my Amazon account this year. If I need something or think of something I really could use and make use of and I can’t find it anywhere else that’s convenient I ask my husband. He’s a cart filler then lets it sit for months and months. We really don’t use Amazon hardly ever anymore since I deleted my account.

I’m more confident in what I donate as well as decluttering our schedule by declining excess commitments. Things that my kids used so much and would be more of an insult than a blessing to someone. Thank you for the reminders!!

I thought I might create a home ofc for myself. I didn’t. After a while I realized I hated these things bc I hated that job and did not like my employers. All it did was constantly remind me of a stressful part of my life and ppl who stresses me for 16 yrs. and had bad juju😊. It’s all gone now. I 1000% relate to what you said. I could put my cut flowers in a glass but that wouldn't be as beautiful. My Grandmother said, everything in moderation. That vase I have belonged to her and so it is a beautiful object and a memory.

When I was in a different season of life where I did a lot of adult entertaining, I invested in some beautiful dishes, both formal place settings and a set of Christmas place settings from Crate and Barrel. Once I became a mom, I realized that old 'entertaining' me was long gone, but I did keep the Christmas dishes. And my son and I enjoyed them because they made the holidays really special to us. But now he has his own family, I don't entertain on that scale at all, and finally I decided to pass the Christmas dishes on to one of my clients who has a young family but also does a lot of entertaining. Felt so good to bless them with these beautiful dishes, and it cleared an entire shelf of a corner cabinet!

They came out for those early holidays but I have not used them in a long time. last year I gave my everyday dishes to my nephew when he got an apartment. Don’t miss them at all. Will need to work on formal dishes and Chrystal this year and finally get rid of my wedding dress. It served its purpose, no one wants it. I want to let it go. Best of luck to you in 2025!

Here's an interesting thing about motivation: it comes after action, not before. The 8 mile before breakfast is done by people usually who are busy and probably tired. But they know the benefits, so they get out the door. This gets reinforced by good feelings and that's how it builds. Stop waiting to start.

I’ve decluttered a lot. Still a few places that are consistent revisits due to having four boys. This year I’m focusing on “declutterring” my mind. I’ve struggled a lot with what I think may be ADHD. Streamlining what I can, outsourcing what I can, delegating some cleaning and letting go of perfection.
Trying to make staying on top of normal mom stuff easier on my brain in the upcoming year. And going to try a no buy month in January. Each month I want to give myself a new challenge. This year in 2024 my goal was to read the entire Bible and I have 21 days left! I actually (ALMOST) stuck to the same goal for 365 days!! So proud of myself 😂😁

I don’t think I’ve ever used it but have held onto it because well I might use it when…and because my mom made it - sewed the napkins and liner and put it all together for us. It’s been in my donate room a few times and I’ve pulled it back out again. It’s currently in there now and maybe this will push me to go ahead and take to donation.

Decluttering my too large clothes. I have 2 stained warm sweat suit tops that most places don't want. My laundry person treated them & I think they will pass now ! I'm thrilled, as a local church wants things for homeless people. Stained a tiny bit counts for nothing when you're cold. Here's hoping !!

The closet "time will tell" bin really works for me. Actually, it's a large shopping bag that stands in the corner of the closet. if I see that I'm skipping over a piece that I don't reach for every week it gets folded & put in the bag. When the bag gets full, I don't look back through the items, I take it to the charity shop. Honestly, I never remember what's in that bag. Note, this is the method I use now to maintain my closet after decluttering it 4 years ago...... Love the "No 7 Rule", great concept!

Will be moving 3 hours away in Spring is a definite catalyst for my decluttering. I look at an item and ask myself do I see this in my new home? If not it is donated. I think I have made 5-6 trunk loads full of stuff and I'm off to do yet another drop off. Selling furniture on marketplace. Feels so good and I don't want all this stuff in my new home. Thank you for the tips! I had to laugh at the central vacuum attachments, I have a bag over 20 years old brand new in my closet. I will leave them for the new homeowners.

This RUclips channel just popped up today so I've never seen you before and I've never commented on any show and I watch them all the time. I became disabled 12 years ago. Both mentally and physically and since that point, with all the meds that they had put me on, I was in bed most of the time I've come down on the meds a lot especially since I was in ICU RN I know more than the average person on what I need, and my psychiatrist goes along with it because I've been with him forever. Even though I am getting better, and I have tried decluttering, that my husband and son who lives on the back of our property and a large RV are constantly coming in and laying things down all over the cabinets the table the cabinet top over my washer and dryer and if that's too full they just move it to the living room. I've asked them so many times, I've even bought baskets for them to put their stuff in. However it's not just them it's me I haven't been able to clean since I got really sick and now that I am getting better, I'm so overwhelmed that I don't even have a clue where to start and it makes me very anxious even thinking about it. I can do 5 minutes I can even do 15 but that'll just get me through the dishes and maybe the dogs toys and then I have to start all over the next day with the same stuff. I can't declutter their stuff because it goes with their business I have talked to them about it. Their answer is when their shop is finished being built on our property that they'll move it all out. I don't know if they will or not but even if they do it still doesn't help me to do 5 minutes cuz I will never get caught up I can even do 15 minutes a day cuz I have tried this and it does work but that's before the house became a storage ground for everything. We have a small house and not a lot of storage areas. People say that small areas are supposed to be easier to keep clean but that's just depends on who you're working with and that depends on me too. It's just so overwhelming right now I'm sick with strep throat and a sinus infection so it's even more overwhelming and my husband is starting to get really irritated with me not while I'm sick but I told him I would get all of this clean and I'm trying but that's been like a year ago. When I was sicker I had housekeepers but that didn't work out because they always stole from me. Besides, with the amount of work that needs to be done I don't think I can pay for that. I mean our house is not disgusting or anything it's just a cluttered mess I can't even dust without moving a ton of stuff. Anyway I'm sorry I was venting mostly about myself but also the two people that I love more than anything in the world. I think I'm going to watch you for a little while and see how your side helps me out, but so far on the video I've Loved what I've seen, and I will try it again and I will try it again with my husband and son as well.

I know black is the typical basic, but I would recommend checking out your personal color analysis. Once you determine the colors that are best for your features and skin tone, you'll be able to narrow down your clothes to what makes you look your best. Often times, black is too harsh of a contrast for most people and makes your face look older rather than a lighter neutral like navy blue which makes your features pop. Just wanted to share. Once I realized autumn colors made my face look blah, I removed them from my closet.

It is true that it feels so good to be around someone who is rhythmically and calmly getting things done (emphasis on the calmly). I love to go to fiber guild meetings and just sit by someone who is spinning on a spinning wheel. So soothing! When children are starting to get disoriented and wild, Kim John Payne says it works wonders to just begin to rhythmically wipe down a table, sweep, or wash the dishes. It soothes them internally.

Also the thing about a year, this date 2025 feels like a timeframe I can think of without being stressed! I will not have become a minimalist then, but I will have fewer things and know where they all are! Will continue after that but think it's a reasonable goal for the coming 365 days😃
