We used to fire up an auxiliary heater (placed in the hull which also was used to heat the crew compartment) and when it was hot we started to circulate the cooling water which passed the heater and in turn gave heat to the engine. This worked fine and I experienced it as low as -30 degrees Celsius (-22F). At night time we used to close all valves (water tight) so the tank would contain the heat better. This always resulted in the auxiliary heaters exhaust valve getting stuck. One crew member always had to go outside get the sledgehammer and knock on the armor plate outside the aux exhaust valve. This banging would soon loosen the valve and the driver was able to start up the heater successfully.

You're all wrong. It has 6 primary batteries in 3 sets of 2 for 24V plus 2 secondary batteries bridged for cold starting. The APU engine can't start the the tank on its own, it can be used to charge the batteries and run the heater.

This is how my grandfather started the zetor 3011 engine 60 years ago. When the engine started he forgot where he wanted to go with the tractor. It also took so long.
I was fortunate enough to visit the tank engine repair shop at MTU in Germany, amazing how this engine has a power pack diesel that is readily changeable

In a hide you wouldnt let it get to this. You have to start up every hour or two for batteries for the radios and optics so its not this cold. Generally , its a mass start up as well, thats a lot of exhaust then.

The tactical smoke camouflage is a free option in these earlier models. She fell into a smooth idle right away though once she caught.

Starts like my mom's 1980's Datsun.
And it will still start in south pole temperatures. The secret is the compression ratio. If you have the batteries to crank it, it will eventually start.
