Wow... Great info. I am Glad I Stumbled across your video. I am looking to purchase all new window screens. I just moved into a New home and it has no screens. But Now I just Learned how to make my own for future use.... Thanks...
Very helpful. Never used that aluminum frame before, but I was sold when you showed how there's no need to cut and join 45-degree joints. I'm going to make a small screen frame for a transom over an exit door to bring in a breeze without bringing in bugs.
@@xololounico each screen corner piece is 3/4 inches and you'll be putting one on each end of the screen frame so when you cut the frame, you cut it 1 1/4" smaller than the size you are shooting for. then after you add the 2 corner pieces (one on each end), it's the exact length you need.
From what you showed, I don't even have to make the angle cuts, this is what's been scaring me about fixing all the old, mangled aluminum frames on my rental house. I have to fix about 15. You're sure no angle cuts? Thanks.
thanks jeff your video was very helpful never done this before and you made it look easy, good video gonna try and replace a few screens that are missing in a house I recently bought.;)...thanks again
Andrew, you can add a "T" that comes with the screen building kit that will allow the cross bar to be added. This "T" can be bought or might come with the screen building kit.
Wow, I didn't realize how easy that was to do and that you don't need specialized tools. Thanks a million, I have a screen that I have to replace due to a renter bending it. Now I'm all over that job!
You can totally do this job Derrick Kea - and I bet you'll it better than the local hardware store. One of my tenants took a screen to the local store, they charged $18 (which wasn't bad) but the level of detail was horrible and I ended up fixing it.
I'm going to experiment this task by myself for two windows that need new screen frames and screens.. Looks simple enough and I'm going to save over $50.00 to have someone come out and do this for me.. Wish me luck!!
You should be able to make a cross bar from the same material. Just buy two more "Ts" to make these connections. It's kinda like working with tinker toys. Hope this helps.
Hi...Great video! I bought these exact parts at Lowes and built 3 screens last night. My windows are fairly large (over 60" in length)...when I screw then into the window or lay them on the floor, they are flat...but when I pick them up, they seem to twist. My cuts were even and I pulled the screen taunt...could it be the connectors are just flimsy when the screen is that big? Or is the aluminum flimsy? thanks!
Great video, thanks Jeff. I'm thinking about taking on this project myself for several screen windows damaged by hurricanes. My windows are older though, and had special spring-pins that secured the old ones to the outside window frame. If I make new screens like the way you outline, what's the best way to secure them nice and tight to the window? I'd like them tight up against the window, no gaps if at all possible.
Hi Jeff! Thanks for the video. I preordered screens but my dimensions are just right, with no room to do the fitting/installation. Can I resize the screens (basically taking them apart and trying to put them together) or just go about getting a fresh set?
Great video. Just wondering if you would know if these would fit aluminum windows from the 70s.Curious because some of the old frames that I currently have contain springs on the height bars of the frame so that they stay in place.
hello. Is the frame 1/2" wide and 1/4 inch thick? I went to Lowes but the one I bought was way too wide and had holes in it. Am going back to trade it for smaller frame. Thanks for this video. I hope I can somehow do this.
Thanks Dave for asking your question, you can make these screen frames any size. And while I've never installed the tension springs I do know that you can get them in the exact same location as the materials you need for the frames. Wish I could be more helpful with regard to the tension springs :(
Hello Jeff, can you tell me how I would measure the windows? Do I measure inside or outside the window sill? Do you have a video on how to measure windows for screens? Thanks In Advance -Wallace
Can you use the same frame material to cut the cross bar? I can't seem to find just a plain rectangular frame to use for the cross bar anywhere. I've seen the crossbar clips for sale to attach them at Home Depot though.
Excellent video however he did not say how much wider the cuts should be in order for screens to fit in the channels on each side to hold them in.. If you don't add width for the channels the screen will not be held in. Did I miss something here?? I guess I could just screw them in.
It depends on the size of the screen. A normal screen might take 30 to 40 minutes or less depending on your skill. It might cost $20 to $30 for someone else to do it but they may not even do as good of a job as you Del Rene
Sadly these frames do not work in older windows. The windows in my house are easily 80+ years old and these just fall out. The originals had two pegs along the top and spring loaded clips at the bottom holding them in. Problem was over the years the clips broke. So before buying the materials, make sure these frames will actually work in your setup.
You're super welcome Tony. I'm glad that it helped you. Let me know how your project turns out. If you have any questions please feel free to drop me a line anytime.
Jeff Patterson Wow, cool. Thanks for posting. I have aluminum windows on the outside of my house, some sort of exterior storm windows and they don't have screens and I was wondering what to do, but can't seem to find a video on what to do about that. It looks like your kind will work w/wood windows.or I might try it w/mine since I can make them any size I want.
so glad you did this because I had thrown my old frames away. Good Deal!
+Pammy B oh no! Well hopefully this helped. You can do it better than the hardware store 👍
Wow...

***** my pleasure to help. Keep me posted on your screen and if you have any questions :D
Thank you so much! Replacing all of the screens (and some frames) is going to be my first DIY project thanks to you. :)
Thanks for the videos, this is very useful to learn, i'll be installing a screen on my window tomorrow.
Glad to help any time Our own little 3d world
nicely done, very clear instructions and you provide info on the tools to boot! thanks for making this video.
So you cut 1 1/2 on each side?im lost

I was looking for a video to help me and none of them helped until I saw yours thanks!!!
Thank you there are hundreds of videos of how to put a screen in an existing frame i have no frames in all my upper windows
Thanks Rik, glad you liked it.

Don’t feel bad, Ace Hardware left me hanging for 9 weeks and when I finally received the screens, they were 1-1/2” too wide. Thanks for the video!!
boy, that's not good customer service. Hope this video helped!

I am so proud of myself, I got it done 😊

Thank you. This is so easy.
Thanks for the video. You look like Lloyd Christmas.
+Tom Na lol, you made my day
@HomeRepairTutor I wanted to see how you finagled the final corner...do you show it on another video please?

Hi Jeff,Thanks for this video. What is the maximum recommended height and width when building this type of screen?
Hi Jeff! Thanks for the video. I preordered screens but my dimensions are just right, with no room to do the fitting/installation. Can I resize the screens (basically taking them apart and trying to put them together) or just go about getting a fresh set?
Awesome Thanks ! :)
I have noticed on larger windows there is a middle cross bar, probably for support.Any steps to do that correctly?
Very informative video. I wonder how would you go about putting a middle support for very long or wide window screen?
I'd add a T-bracket to the center of the frame and add another support. But let me know if you have another suggestion burnn5150

Don't have a video on that but make the screens a bit smaller than your opening, that way they'll fit

What about the leaf spring needed at the top and the pull tabs needed to pull up the screen out of the screen channel?
+Jesse Parris good question, you can add them but I didn't because these needed to be permanent
Thank you sir! My handyman can go pound sand for leaving me hanging for 3 weeks
+twesam glad to help, sorry to hear you were left hanging!!!
Pound sand? Fuck sand?

I guess I could just screw them in.
How long does it take to make one screen, and if I hire someone to build them for me, what is a reasonable fee?

Jeff Patterson Thank you for taking the time and responding. You have been very helpful in answering my questions.
Cheers,
Del :)
That info is in a different video Nor Draw - here's the link to that video

Just trying to track down the framing in the UK. Does anyone know where I can get it from?
They're called tension springs.
Who knew this was so simple?...
Kimberly Johnson once you get the hang of it you can do this better than most home stores :D

Yep, you can build whatever size you need :D
I used plastic screen corners made in China and they disintegrated in a couple of years. Not using plastics corners ever again.
B
incomplete video dude. doesn't tell how to measure the size of screen or put the screen material in.
