I took 18 months off between 3/22 and 9/23. Best decision of my life. The people with the most criticism of me tended to actually be jealous. You've set yourself up in a way that a lot of the people who are negative around you haven't. No need to lie about what you're doing! More people need to know it's possible to take a break. I'm for sure taking another break in the future.

I took off 7 months and started working again today. It was really important for my personal growth. I was able to make a lot of awesome new friends and change my priorities in life. I feel more sure than ever about my future. Everyday is still a challenge. Being a human is not easy and it’s not supposed to be. However, I have realized my brain really missed working and learning and growing. It’s important to take pauses when u need them though. Good luck to you all on your life journey

Been working as a dev for 15 yrs since the age of 17. Burn out started to creep in the more senior I got. Vacations and breaks usually helped but they started becoming less effective. Got laid off recently after working 5 years in my last job. I was initially stressful even though we were giving a sizeable redundancy package, but on the last day it was honestly like a weight being lifted off my shoulders. 2 months later and my mental and physical health has been the best it's ever been. We've been conditioned to always work a 9 to 5 and not to take 'extended breaks' or it looks bad to employers. Not to mention the the potential stigma within your circles from people knowing you're unemployed. Screw that. It really made me shift all my goals to eventually being able to sustain myself living like this and off passive income in the near future. Despite the uncertainty I can say I am truely happy.

My boyfriend has been going through similar things, such as trying to find a new job, being unemployed, etc. I've been trying my best to support him and be a listening ear through this time, but because I'm studying for a career in a different industry, it's hard to truly understand what he's going through. Hearing your perspective has helped me better understand him and what it's like for people in tech. Thank you for sharing your experiences.

Keep at it KC - you're on one hell of a journey.
I hit burnout just under 18 months ago. It took just about 14 months to just properly realign different parts of my life.
Sometimes you've got to slow down. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.

Oh, man, I know what you're talking about. I left my job three weeks ago. Over a decade of working for major companies, from the bottom to great positions - but at the cost of overwork, no vacations and so on. These first few weeks feel like a huge chunk of my life has been ripped away from me, and outside of work, which took up 70% of my time, I didn't notice how little I knew about what else I loved, what I was good at, what I wanted to do. That's an incredibly accurate point you made about autopilot. I support myself now by saying that I'm glad I got off autopilot in my 30s rather than working until I retired before realizing that I didn't understand how I spent my life.

There are so many aspects to burnout. One that I've come to realize my second time around -
If you're working for a company that has you working on tasks that you feel don't really matter, you won't have any energy to do the work. Especially if you're working remote and aren't around coworkers for a boost of energy. Additionally, mediocre work can turn you into a mediocre developer and that itself is draining to me.
For me, I don't think so much about what my life's purpose is but rather- what's a position I can put myself in where I can be energized? Where is there exciting, meaningful work to be done?
Great video - we need more people talking about this experience

I quit my job 5 months ago and I was worried about the same comments from outside as well as the self-pressure I would put on myself. However, as time went by, a lot of things that I was doing meaninglessly like a zombie made more sense and I started appreciating the present moments more rather than living anxiously in the future. Stopped worrying about how to get back in the 9-5 grind again and I am really enjoying my time with my family. I am also learning to code and its so much more fun than doing what I hated. This video was so relatable. Love from India KC

I just want to say thank you, I’m 25 myself and I can’t say I’ve ever related to a video more than this. I’ve been struggling with the idea of leaving my startup to go corporate to fill in the gaps of my knowledge due to a huge portion of the work being self taught. However, in preparation for that, I saw the decline in software jobs this year, on top of the burn out I feel and the fact I was relating to how you felt towards software leading up to you quitting, I think taking a break is the best thing for me. So thank you for the advice KC, you can say you’ve already helped one struggling developer

That's one of the traps. What other people think of you. If they don't see going after big money and working all the time like they do, then they look down at you. But they know you are free and they are trapped so they have to look down on you to make themselves feel better.
The new challenges you face are how to still make money without working all the time, avoiding the people that you no longer resonate with, and being brave enough to create a new future by following your true instincts and not what others think.

I've received unemployment benefits 3 different times in my life (TIME OFF FROM WORK). During that time, the best moments I had off were GOING TO THE GYM (LIFETIME FITNESS). Other than that, I really never did much (besides playing video games and watching porno), except realizing I'm an actual bum and need to seriously work on myself: Reading more books, writing, learning a new skill, come out with my own product, motivating myself to travel outside my comfort zone, being inspired/passionate about something, etc. I can't believe I'm already 39 now.

    1. Cycle of tech always repeats it self. even with new languages, frameworks, technologies you are always constantly learning. To avoid burnout, try to limit outside work from you 9-5 job.
    2. How you recharge can cause burnout if you are recharging in an unhealthy way. Find healthy ways to recharge, such as eating good, playing board games, playing video games, and etc to hangout with friends.
    3. Don't push yourself over your limit with work and everything you're trying to do all at once or you will feel burnout and everything come crashing down. Take some time to enjoy the little things and to take some time off from the grind.

We are programmed to work for a company even our own company. Humanity are being enslaved eversince our great great grandfather and grandmother.
What's best is to love what we do, search our passion because if you got it you'll be happy and not being forced to work to live but to live and be happy doing what's your passion.
You may not see your mission yet on earth but i can feel that your energy will bring you there 😊

all code bases are dumpster fires, the excitement of coding goes away the moment you need to submit PR's and get all the feedback to try get the smallest of changes in with the BS back and forward dance devs do to flex themselves. Then all the other workplace BS that goes with it. Damn I am broken :) I hate the industry with a passion now and going to be a delivery driver for a while to take a break.

Average salary of an L5 at Google is 338k/yr
Working just 3 years at Google from L3 should nrt you 500k of disposable income if you played it right.
Put that into S&P500 for long term since 2021 gets you an additional 100k, minus taxes.

I was going to respond to your comment with an equally negative one, but I had to stop myself. I know that the attitude that you're expressing is all too common not just in software but among all industries. At this point, I really just feel sorry for people like you who think that just because you get a big paycheck means that you don't have rights or can't be wronged by your manager/company/working conditions. If you're a manager, I would truly hate to work under you and I feel very sorry for anyone that has to endure you. If you're just a solo engineer, then I still feel sorry that you think so lowly about your own self worth that you feel like this. No one deserves to be working under gruelling or abusive working conditions, even if you think your paycheck justifies it. Everyone deserves to be treated with respect and be paid the true value of their labor, even cynical, overly-competitive workers like you

You can tell this person is a miserable person to be around. Like people said, just because he makes good money doesn’t mean he can’t burn out or be unhappy. He busted his ass to get to that point vs taking a half assed job like a janitor. Good luck in life bro, just from this comment I can tell you’re not going far.
