I've got a 2013 D5 V60. I bought it because I wanted a comfortable, well equipped, reliable family estate. It's been utterly faultless in the 3 years I've had it. It's actually faster than my old Octavia vRS too. In terms of size, the BMW 3 series is a closer match than the 5 series but that doesn't have the equipment levels or reliability of the V60.
I wouldn't have a 330 estate either personally, I'd go for the bigger 5
I am actually looking at getting one of these 2012 d5 rdesign how do you find it on fuel
@@supermario1982171 About 30mpg in commuting traffic, mid-40's on a run.
Great content as usual.
Wife has the v40 with the 5 cylinder diesel and its cracking engine.
In the 4 years she's owned it,it hasn't missed a beat.
Went from a Focus to the Volvo and don't think we'll go back.
Another great video Matt, massive fan of Volvo's. My dad still drives his Volvo V70 Estate 2.4D from 2004! Absolute warrior of a car and super solid. Great video yet again thanks!
Thank you! Been looking to buy this car so of course your video will be the most useful of them all.
No problem!
V70 D3 owner here, reactive lenses in glasses, no corduroy trousers though. No extra label for annoying hand brake, I still move it the wrong way after 6 months though. I had to get the car due to last iconic box Volvo estate and 5 cylinder engine. Loving it. So glad to be out of company cars after nearly 25 years to get the V70.
Haha thanks for watching. I had a customer damage their XC60 because they thought they'd engaged the handbrake but hadn't actually applied it.
Have driven an S60, the saloon version, with the 5 cylinder Diesel engine but with an automatic box. Really enjoyed it, very comfortable seats and yes, bloody good stereo
love your reviews Matt, watched every single one you've uploaded. Have a very similar taste in cars, and have recently purchased a 2011 Jaguar XF S - something I've wanted for ages and your review made me eventually get one!
Good choice! They’re great cars
I owned both a V60 (-12) and a V70 (-15) and V60 was perfect when the children was younger. The V70 is a packmule and very practical but less personal feeling. To drive the V60 was much better imo. The V70 had 250k km when I sold it and has much more left to go still. Thanks for a nice review! (as always)
@HighPeakAutos, your reviews are informative and entertaining as per usual.
Keep 'em coming.
Thank you.
Thanks, will do!
I’ve got the face lifted S60 and pretty much agree with the points you’ve raised Matt. If only it was a bit quieter, comfier and eliminated some annoying ergonomic issues it could have been a really good car. Have to reiterate the seats are superb, especially when heated 😜
Merry Christmas, mate. Thanks a lot for all the great videos you posted this year. Hope to watch some more in 2021.
I missed my days working at ICA MAXI. Thanks for the trip down memory lane
Love the vids as always. ❤️
I've just bought one of these (November 20), brilliant car, badged a d4, but it has the same 2.0, 5 cylnder engine as the one you tested, but with a torque converter auto box. i use it for work (i repair washing machines). i reset the trip computer when i got it, and having since done 6000 miles, about 40% of which is in town, the average consumption is 48.6mpg, which i think is pretty amazing. It really is such a joy to drive, even with a washing machine on board! Also, being a high spec SE Lux, it's laden with very advanced saftey tech, which even today very few brand new cars have, and it's now 8 years old.
..."near a playground"...you're killing me!
Lol
Thank God you are on, have been wanting a video from you as a palliative.
Haha thanks!
Hey, I considered a V70, and I don't wear tinted glasses, lol.
But I have the V50, which was replaced by the V60 I guess. Both of them are similar sized. And the best way I could describe the V60, is a COMPACT estate/hatchback. Not quite as big as a V70, but bigger and more practical than a Golf or Focus hatch, which I believe the V60 originally shared its platform with. But unlike the Ford, you probably feel like you're in something which is a little bit different, and not so generic. The V50 gives that impression, with its styling, and the floating centre console. And if does feel well built, with quality materials.
So in short, the V60 is for those that want a hatchback, with a smidge more room in the boot. Great for growing families I guess. But offering a little bit more excitement than a big barge.
The V50 sold quite well, as did the V40 before it. But I haven't seen that many used V60's on the market, so maybe their owners like them enough to hang on to them.
Merry Christmas Matt 🎄🎅
Cheers! Merry Christmas to you too
Agree with where it fits in, had a V70 D5 for years, excellent car, comfy & acres of space. Never missed a beat. Only down side was the apalling turning circle. If I went down the Volvo route again, it would be another V70, not V60. Good video though.
Another excellent review Matt. I have a 2013 V40 SE Lux D3 (5cyl) which I really do like a lot. Nice engine, economical, fast enough (for me) and although compact quite big enough for my needs (and it has a proper handbrake and those lovely comfortable leather heated seats). Almost 87k on it now has never let me down and everything works and feels solid. I always felt the V60 was neither one thing or the other and kind of fell between 2 stools. Not that many of them on the roads, even compared to the same era S60 which is much more common and to my eyes better looking while being almost just as practical.
Thanks again for an honest and entertaining review. Seasonal wishes to you and all the best for 2021!
I agree! Thanks for watching. Merry Christmas
I've got the new V60 T5, and it's brilliant. A massive improvement on this model.
Volvo also do some of the best interiors at the moment.
I love Matt's reviews, because he introduces me to cars i too had never known about... I'm still obsessed with the Skoda Superb review, and know I'm buying one when my Hyundai Grandeur (Korean Limousine) gives up its ghosts.
Glad you like them!
I bought a Superb TDI estate after watching his video. It's a great car.
@@vschouten here in NZ the Police are replacing all their patrol cars with Superbs... All I ever hear now is the word "Superb" this, Superb that... Diesel's here don't make that much sense, as RUCs (Road User Charge) costs 7c a K... but I'm a big fan of low down Torque!.
How to talk yourself out of the sale of a car in one easy video LOL.
Thanks for another honest and straight forward video Matt and you and your family have a fantastic Christmas (from someone who's specs tint automatically and doesn't own a Volvo lol) 🎅🎄👍😁
Haha thanks! Merry christmas to you too
Heading very close to 100k, and very well deserved. Another great review
Thanks! Merry Christmas
I had the final facelisted model with a T4 petrol 190Hp petrol. Super comfortabel, on my long trips through Norway and Sweden. It had heated seats as standard... 😉 I loved the clean design, both interior and exterior. Please note that the facelift was quite extensive.
Good choice!
A still sharp looking Swede for 2011! Top review, really enjoy the variety you provide and the knowledge base is immense.
Talking of variety, any hot hatches coming your way? Meaning, large rear wing, 'cannon' exhaust. Thank you, lots of fun 👍
I’m not a big hot hatch fan but I should try and bring some more to the channel and see if I can change my mind about them
The great thing about a small Volvo or other estate car is the ease of parking in cities and towns! Also, there's enough boot space for most luggage equipment without any backseat passengers. With our roads clogged up with SUVs and 4x4s (that will never see a spec of mud!), it's essential to drive an alternative safe car (in case of an accident), which has great fuel efficiency. Thanks.
I get a lot of lifestyle advice from this channel - I've now had to throw out my glasses where the tint changes with the light... and change the magnolia paint in my living room.... ;)
I am litteraly looking for a V60 and missed a good video about used ones... now there is one! Thanks!
Hope you like it!
U get the same comfy seats and terrific sound system in the v70 your appraisal is spot on again sir, hope u have a lovely Christmas !
Thanks, you too!
The D3 5 cyl is a great engine. I have it in my C30 and it really packs a punch.
I like the C30, great little cars
@@HighPeakAutos would make an awesome review 🙂
So is the D5. I have that in my V50.
I was obsessed with heated seats, I have now moved on to always requiring ventilated seats if leather as way too sweaty in summer - if no ventilated sears I would now prefer fabric.
We had heated and ventilated seats on our old Mondeo titanium X , loved the heated bit, tried the ventilation, but never noticed any difference ,so never used the feature.
I had a Saab 9-5 Aero with heated and ventilated seats. The ventilation was superb. If they’d been an option on my XC70 I’d have held out until I could have found one so equipped.
@@nigeltoon1848
Before the Mondeo ,we owned a 10 plate NG 9-5 ( the new generation shape) it had the regular ' sun heat' heated seats, but not ventilation. Maybe it was just a 12 plate Mondeo titanium X sport ,with cloth seats just didn't need the ventilation,or it was a poor design
My Aero was the previous generation, a 2004 estate. If Saab had kept going for a few more months, they’d have got the NG 9-5 Kombi into series production. That was a really handsome thing.
@@nigeltoon1848
The trouble with the NG Saab ,was for owners, the lack of parts availability (windscreens for instance) and the diagnostics moving on to Tec3 which was completely incompatible with Tec 2 and the equipment was only rented to Saab dealers and Indies, never sold.
So when the plug was pulled, so was the ability to do deep diagnostic testing (not ideal on a " new" car)
I do agree that had they got the estate out it might have helped them, and it was a looker in the pictures I saw.
My D3 R Design was a great car, such a torquey engine, hardly anything went wrong in 150,000 miles, the most reliable car I have ever owned. Cam belt only needs changing every 108k miles. Superb motorway cruiser. Wouldn’t hesitate in recommending one. Only changed it as now hardly doing any miles so have purchased a petrol car. So much more stylish than a run of the mill Audi, bmw, Vauxhall or Ford.
Great point!
I remember when the Volvo Estate showed up in Touring Car. That was amazing
I have the same car in Norway, 2012 v60 D3 manual, chiptuned to 190hp and 480nm. Really pulls, and does 58mpg on long trips. Love it!
Very nice!
Looking forward to the course. Keep up the good work. If not give us a job, I just want to work with cars and people who think the same as me of cars.
Have a great Christmas Matthew despite the restrictions. Good review as always with the Volvo , keep em coming with your wit and knowledge.
Thanks! Same to you
Was literally just thinking, Matt hasn’t put a video out for a while then went to my home page and up pops High Peak Autos 🙂👍
Haha coincidence. I've got more on the way very soon
I said to my wife ( but it’s only 20cm smaller) but she still seems unhappy!

Great video! Very good job. :)
It's very funny, cause I was only just looking at v60s about an hour ago.
Thats a coincidence... Glad you liked it!
I just bought a dark blue 2000 V70 XC (1 owner, 98k miles). No computer screen, love it.
I'm a mid 20's lad who's recently bought a big V70, and I actually lol'd at the glasses comment because I actually wear liam gallagher specs that automatically tint!
And still young enough to enjoy the swings and the sand pit, lol.
Hahaha
Matt , brilliant again, how refreshing to hear an honest opinion, (as always) mind you i have learnt not to be drinking coffee while watching your videos!!!!!!!!!!!
Haha thanks for watching
I have a V60 D5 R design auto and it’s been the best car Iv owned. Looks less geeky then a v70. Decent car and with 215hp I’m 27 and can’t quite bring myself to own a v70 but want a decent sized D5 engined car that just eats the miles too and from work. For me the v60 is the best all rounder for those seeking a 5 cylinder diesel without the grandfather image. The boot fits 3 muddy spaniels and that’s good enough for me 👍
Thank you enjoyed. Given me food for thought, Volvo is definitely now on my list. Cheers
Lovely Jubbly, Merry Christmas and I look forward to more content in 2021.
Thanks for watching! Merry Christmas!
You beat me to it regards the smaller engine ,pointless having a small engine knocking its nuts in better with the bigger lump being less stressed....great review yet again looking forward to next years stock coming in already...👍
Exactly! Couldn't agree more
Yes, you bet! Love these style of cares from volvo. And jep Volvo drive style is meant to be forgetable mostly. You but these volvo's for great sounds, great seats, by faaaar the best interiors, and simply having a car that doesn't stand out, but still has a slight cool factor too it.
Between an XC60 and a CX-5, around 8 years old, which would you chose? Thanks in advance.
@@Brukner841 I mean that XC60 is a great car, but I have no experience with teh CX-5. Mazda's are solid. But I assume a lot also comes down to quality, Safety and of course preference of interior en exterior design, that I cannot answer for you.
@@Conceptcreator thank you, I clearly prefer the Volvos usually.
@@Brukner841 you got good taste then^^
Great video! Own a 2014 V60 myself(The facelifted which is so much better looking) and think it's an amazing car. Perfect size for me, I have enough packing space but it still looks sportier and better than the V70. Also one of the smoothest and most comfortable cars I've driven. Volvo does have a few quality issues though, so far these 6 months I've owned it I have had to change a clutch cylinder but thats okay.
I do agree about the 1.6 though. I have a 1,6 litre T4f with 180hp which is very pleasant to drive alone but when I have it full of my friends and packed it can feel a bit weak. But still a lovely and quiet engine.
I had a 2003 S60 with the TV remote. When you pulled that out I actually laughed out loud. I loved that car and hated to sell it when I moved back the US. I'm looking at getting this car and the interior just seems so familiar.
I've got one of these with the 1.6 as my daily driver. This is completely accurate from start to finish, ended up remapping the 1.6 to bring it up to the 140bhp area which made it a lot more drivable with the bonus of 70mpg on a run being achievable. Couldn't find myself driving it on the weekend though as it is just too ordinary hence I got myself an old t5. You can't go wrong with these things, they are just exactly what you want from a standard car
I'm buying a 1,6 4 cy T4f, was the 1.6 reliable for you? Any big repairs?
@@KarlstadDrums I've had to do the wheel bearings, shock absorbers and brakes/tyres. I've taken it from 60k miles to 101k and that's all I've ever had to do. Passenger seatbelt has a bit of an issue, but there's a recall out for that in the UK just waiting for volvo to get the parts, still on the first clutch and no signs of it needing a repair any time soon.
@@alistairpatterson429 Awesome to hear! Have bought myself a beautiful red T4f, love it so far really smooth and quiet engine! However the coolant was really low and now i noticed it is under the minimum when the engine was cold. So I'll prob have to get the old coolant out(as i don't know which one it is) and hope it's not a leak.
2004 XC70 owner here, 185k, still going like a train with the right preventative maintenance and no cheap bits. Finding myself very tempted by how my the V90’s have deprecated. Must resist the lure of the touchscreen.
Im waiting for the V90 to go full electric before buying one. Their consumption is quite high (maybe because its a heavy car), especially the petrol engine in the hybrid and i dont see the point of only 50km electric range. I have to add though that the V90 is the most fun and comfortable car ive ever driven.
Ohhh the polestar version of this car... YES
What do you think of it vs equivalent established estates like BMW 3series and S4 etc.
Keep up the amazing videos!!!
WOW.. my V60 also same colour D3 Geartronic.. I bought it at 179tkm..absolutley love it.
Seasonal greetings. Best wishes for the new year 👍
Thanks! Same to you
I spat out my coffee mate....those glasses that automatically tint....omg...you have to try some stand up lol...well this is in effect...nice one!👍🤣✌️and you’re trying to sell this car yeah...😝😉
Haha I’m going to offend everyone aren’t I 😂 Cheers for watching.
This class of cars, i.e. a small estate is really the best option for urban life. It is not too big and bulky, but still practical and allows you to haul a lot of stuff around. I cannot see why anyone would buy a sedan instead of an estate in this class of cars. Most of the estates are better looking also.
top stuff as always Matt :)
He is good isn`t he 👌👌👌
The 5-cyl diesel-engines are very reliable. Always a great choice when going for Volvo. I've seen them with 300-400,000km still going strong! If I were to buy a Volvo (and I am thinking about one in the future), I'd buy a V70 D4 (5cyl one, so no newer than 2014 pretty much)
Newer ones with 4-cyl seem to be alright as well but it's not the same thing. And they do have more issues in form of EGR-valve stuff and what not. Safer to go for a 5-cyl, a lot more fun as well!
Yeah, and the 5-cylinders sounds really good, even the diesels. It's a shame they don't offer them engines in the new Volvos anymore.
My '14 V60 is now at 135000 miles. I've had to put 2 new EGR valves in now though
@@Gibz101 Which engine does it have?
@@tobias_dahlberg D4, VEA. I do love the car, I'll take it up to 200k miles before I move it on
@@Gibz101 Yeah the VEA engine is the one with a little bit more issues. I’d recommend the 5-cyl that came before.
Glasses that tint near a Playground?!!!. Can't lose the image now . What a review
Hahah thanks for watching
Playground?? :)) Volvo drivers will be shuddering at that one mate, I'd have the V70 as it's more suited to carrying coffins than going on the school run :)
Are you an undertaker then, or a necrophiliac?
@@Azureecosse And if you did buy an S2000, she would take the V90 as part of the divorce settlement, THEN what you use to go dogging? Think on!
V70 good for rolled up carpet too, whatever might be inside it is my business!

@@HighPeakAutos And you mate
I agree, they are a bit of an odd model in terms of where they fit but they're great value if you can compromise a bit of space, cheaper than an equivalent Octavia on the used market and a much nicer interior/nicer sounding 5 cylinder engine.
Another entertaining review Matt.Really look forward to all your uploads and have enjoyed this years offerings,I thank you for them all.

Helpful review, been looking at an r design auto as insurance is half what im paying now for my rover. And i do quite like the look of these
Love Volvo's, V70's S80's are nice. XC70's are the best. Love your analogy of Volvo owners with the tinted specs.

I have the v40 r design with that 1.6 engine, which is fantastic when you get it wound up in that size of car. Really do like the s60 and v60 but think the 1.6 would be a bit lost in it.
Agree Matt, has to be the R Design, and I do have heated seats in my v40.......

Christmas drinking game: Take a shot everytime he mentions the V70. (Merry Christmas)
Aw man gutted about this review as I was definitely in the market for one. I currently drive a 07 S40 and see this as a new v50. V70 is always in the frame but are really pricey. Great honest review that puts me back to the drawing board.
Why are you back to the drawing board? Just because Matt misses the point of the V60 doesn't mean it won't suit your needs. If you need more room than an S40/V40 and the V70 is too big, the V60 is the perfect solution. The D5 engines are great but a bit thirsty on short runs. Go for an SE Lux Nav and you'll get all the toys (adaptive cruise, blind spot warning, automatic braking, collision warning, heated memory leather seats, auto lights, auto wipers, nav, bluetooth). The only downside is the turning circle on the 5 cylinder models is woeful because they had to alter the rack to accommodate the wider engine.
@@AndyD070568
exactly. I have a v50 which is similar in size to a v60. I've never needed or wanted more space.
Why does anyone buy a 3 Series Touring over a 5 Series Touring? Pretty similar reason to why someone would buy a V60 over a V70.
They buy because it is more fun to drive (RWD or AWD), lots of engines to choose from. Lots of trim, suspension types to choose. Where I live BMW is easier to service.
Price...?
My 2011 d5 205 r design has 200k on it now and it feels just as good as it did when I picked it up. Look after these cars and they will look after you, as Ive found out.
That “push on” sticker for the parking brake cracked me up 😂 Do you think the previous owner also had one on his doorbell “Push to Ring”?!
Haha yes... and a 'no canvassers' sign
Another funny video! I love that you keep them real and less cheese 🧀! So a great all rounder would be a 530d touring M Sport??
Yeah I think so. Cheers
Hi Matt, I know you think they are boring!!! but my second car is a Ford Mondeo hatchback !!!!! Absolute massive boot on these vehicles, with the back seats down me and the wife, can easily fit two mountain bikes and even have a little room left for the mother-in-law>>> if she lays sideways 😁😁😁😁
Hahahaha Exactly!
XC60 love it......Merry Christmas Matt have a good un.
Looks good for £5.5k. Had the use of a V40 diesel a couple of years ago and found that to be really good.
Very true about the Heated Seats comment. I recently bought a W211 CDI and the 1st owner did not opt for the heated seats...and I live in Sunny South Florida!! Still, 100% right cause on those rare days when its 40F?..when you NEED em and DONT have em?..the absolute worst!

Great vid! Please can you do a Volvo V40 review?
I thought you were in Spain sunning yourself because you hadn’t done a review for a while! Have a great Christmas Matt. 👍🏻
I wish!
Thanks for the great review!
Do you by any chance have any experience with the hybrid version of this car? Thinking of buying one, but not sure if it makes sense to buy used since the battery might need changing if it’s almost 10 years old…. or do the battery last longer?
I went to look at one yesterday. 2 litre diesel business edition. Didn’t buy as the boot as well as being short, it was also quite shallow. The seats were as you’ve said just about perfect. The big deal breaker for me was the fact there was NO space for your feet! No clutch foot rest, no accelerator foot rest, so feet have to be under the pedals when using the cruise! What a let down for a business car mile muncher………
For me it would have to be a V90, every time I see one I just think they look fantastic!
I think if you look at it not as a small estate car, but as a sedan with a bigger boot, it's pretty good.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year Matt.
Thanks! Same to you. Cheers
Cracking vlog, any info about the V50?
Matt, finally! Thought you'd had an early Christmas break. Or bought some glasses that automatically tint and no longer cool enough for RUclips 😂😂
Hahaha cheers
Stealth cars, stylish enough not to be bland, not a 'spare room' Volvo estate more a long-form hatchback, handy for a couple of dogs or when you can't be arsed to lift stuff out of a deep hatch. Classy colour, and those seats look good enough for a lounge. Yeah, I'm liking the 'unknown' V60...
