I've always wanted one but seem to end up with a ford mondeo instead usually 5-6k cheaper similar age and spec. And the volvo at the same price is the previous model so probably less safe in a crash. 2000 year volvo vs 2006 model mondeo
one thing i love about your reviews you give is how detailed you are. not many other reviewers do this and it really helps people in buying their next car. brilliant.
A friend of mine has a 2013 V70 1.6 diesel, and regularly takes it on long journeys and loves it. It has a cream leather and wood interior which actually brings out the BMW and Mercedes E Class Elegance in it. The first time I was in it, I spent a whole hour going through main roads and remote countryside and it was a joy. I found it extremely sporty and luxurious and comfortable and if Volvo wanted to offer BMW, Mercedes and Audi luxury to their customers, they did it with this one. We have a 1997 V70 2.4 diesel and it's a brilliant car. It has a valour interior which is extremely comfortable and I feel car manufacturers should start offering velour interiors to their customers again
I was the first owner in 1998 of a Volvo S40 T4 CD variant in Forest Green with tan leather interior, reg n° R98 PMO. At the time my oldest was 7 and our youngest 3. I optioned the ratchet up booster seat squabs that you mention when I originally ordered the car, along with the winter pack too. So they're nothing new to Volvo but they were brilliant. And for a 2.0 litre car it could out sprint most cars at the traffic light grand prix. And it topped out at 146mph (speedo) because I emptied the fuel tank on the old M10 south of St Albans and my assistant at the time also achieved it on the A1 between the M25 and Stirling Corner. Interestingly enough I am a member of the NT. I am also a mathematician by degree and most certainly not a geography teacher. And a retired accountant and actuary to boot. However, I don't have leather patches on any of my Gieves & Hawkes suit jackets, overcoat or pullovers. But I do have them on 2 of my casual jackets. How extraordinarily perceptive of you. You made me spill my gin and tonic.
We had a brand new V70 2.4d in 2008 on a 58 plate, lovely car but the engine was shit. The fuel consumption was absolutely terrible, but the biggest problem was the DPF. AHHHHHHHHHHHH. went back to the dealers three times to have the dpf cleaned out. managed to get rid of it after two half years. It was replaced with a XC70 with the 204bhp D5 which was fantastic on fuel and no problems with the DPF.
Great review , apart from the best engine I have come across its the 5 cylinder Petrol turbo ' Which is basically the same unit as the focus ST and it's a hoot ' A real sleeper ' yet It returned 38mpg at motorway speeds on a trip to Switzerland
I love mine. High quality engineering is intrinsically engaging. I neither want nor need a car with multicoloured flashing dash displays like a tap room fruit machine. I don’t want to talk to my car.. Volvo gives you everything you need and nothing more. Check out Zlatan’s ad for the V70 on You Tube. It’s marketed as a vehicle for modern day Vikings in Sweden...! Great review, thanks.
I'm hankering after an XC70 too. The increased ride height, chunky black plastic arches and other 4x4 bits suit the Volvo perfectly. Jayemm reviewed the XC70 on his channel not too.long back. Worth a watch.
Well as we are not looking at anything this year, think I'll pass and just keep my Fiesta but thanks for the mention concerning Sleeping Arrangements in the rear, though that was a clever dig without naming names, as you know me on here I'm all about comfort when driving and sleeping - thus saving Hotel bills. Cheers Matt.
You must have visited some grotty French b&bs. Last time we had to overnight in France we had a huge room with king size feather bed. If it had been on the ground floor we could have brought the car inside with us!
Had the previous model with the D5, and I did love it until I spent a fortune getting the suspension all sorted, ie new bushes shocks, shock mounts, timing belt, then discovered on a jaunty ride to the tip that it didn’t go round corners very well. One tow truck later and much more expense I decided the turning circle was also an utter pain and got rid. I still miss it.
Hello there, Swede and former V70-owner here. Also owned about 7 other volvos through the years. And that is for a reason. It's just to damn good not to have one. Also they are pretty good value here in Sweden cause they always top the most sold car here. But alas, the one thing I want to point out in your review sir. There is a significant change in styling 2014 and forward. Personally atleast I really think there is a big difference in the 2013 car and 2014. Also in 2015 Volvo On Call got released. Wich basically means I can run the heater and start the car etc. from the phone, wich I cannot live without today. And that is a thing to remember when going for a volvo. Also the never V70s has the awsome 8-step automatic and four-cylinder D4 wich basically gives it 40-something MPG (not sure about your way to measure). Its just really really good. Nowadays I have XC60 with the sweet 5 cylinder d4 and that roar. Love it, can confirm its a thing.
Great video yet again, the powershift gearbox is made from plastic ,if you see one of these in an auction avoid like the plague its in there because the box is on the way out ,seen it many a time people thinking they are getting a bargain
Most old people I see seem to drive Skida Yeti's, Hyundai's, or Nissan's. I think modern Volvo's are driven more by people with young families, or people like me, in their 40's. I don't consider myself to be old. Volvo's might have had the "old man image" years ago, but I think they have moved on from that now, unless you're looking at it from the peespective of a teenager.
@@hermanmunster3358 Well I've got news for you fella! No im joking, but i think once upon a time "old" people cars meant "reliable". More recently "old" people cars seem to be more "economical" because i think there was a sweeping realization that pensioners do very few yearly miles so reliability doesnt come into play.
@@mrboomboombaby Yeah, you've probably got a point. I wasn't criticising, it was just my observation. I think Volvo, especially with their current line up, have shaken off the image of being the go to brand for the oldies. And they are supremely reliable cars. I think the initial purchase price is what sways older drivers away from Volvo these days, as they are now a PREMIUM brand, and have been for many years. I like the fact that my V50 is not filled with swathes of scratchy plastics, and cheap cloth seats, unlike some of their far east competition. But that does not detract from the fact that Japanese and Korean cars are probably just as reliable. I, and many other drivers just prefer the luxury feel, and design aesthetics of more premium European brands, and are prrpared to pay a little more for that.
So, another great review. I just did 120,000 miles in the 1.6 DriveE 2010 model. The turning circle was ok to be fair. The French engine was the only bad bit. Nothing else wore out. I’d happily buy the d5 and keep it for ever. The 1.6 d went wrong again and again. Only the engine bits. Did a genuine 55-60 mpg though.
Never, ever, have I liked ANY car or van with a French engine, petrol or diesel, I swear to God they are designed by the descendants of the fallen at Agincourt/Waterloo/Trafalgar: For Export to the UK only.
Matt, watching your videos about Volvo V70's encouraged me to research that model and, in so doing, discover the XC70, which, broadly speaking, is an off-road-going version of the V70 with AWD and raised 2 inches higher - this gives it enough clearance that it is actually capable of going off-road (to a degree) more effectively than the majority of so-called (I would say 'pretend') SUV's. The interior of the XC70 is identical to the V70 (and S80 and so on) and in the exterior view it broadly looks like a normal estate. A tad more expensive than a V70, yes, but they only made them until 2016 so second-hand prices need not be unreasonable now. Well worth a look if you get the opportunity and I'd be interested in your opinion of it. One question, that wrecked red V50 you bought... how did that turn out?
THe stitch on the seats are 'sail' type on the XC. THere's also an attractive handrail all the way from the front of the center console to back. The raised height of the XC does a better job than the regular V70 on badly maintained roads for sure.
Just bought one of these, a 2013 T4 with 142000 km on the clock. Really like it so far: tons of space, comfortable and a pretty fuel efficient engine. Unless it breaks down completely, I can’t see myself getting rid of it for 10 years at least👍
Great review again, thanks! Used to have the 2.4 D5 in the old xc90 and loved the racket it made, thought it sounded great on the kick down, for a diesel !Now we have a Q7 3.0 TDI V6 and miss my D5 sounds :-( first world problems lol 😂
Yes, they are lovely motors, especially for the +30 somethings. And they can be picked up relatively cheaply. Go for the 2.4 D5 or 2.5 T5, they are the best of the bunch, and SE trim with full leather interior.
Spot on review! Thank you for mentioning the gearbox. Coming from a 2012 S80 T5 owner here. I do not recommend anyone to get any Volvo with the MPS6 Powershift transmission. It isn’t really reliable, expensive to maintain and clunky to operate. Mine has done 221,000km. So far so good. Changed the fluid every 60,000km to get this far.
Living in Kent now and realise I watch half of the videos to see if I can spot places from my old stomping ground🤣 But they are good. Keep it up, and for the first time ever I've pressed a Subscribe button

I have a 2009 V70 .. straight six 3.0 litre petrol with turbo.and all wheel drive. So fast with the turbo .. love the car one of the best or the 23 vehicles I ever owned. Great review thanks
I have a C70 2.0D with a remap (170/400Nm) and the only reason I chose it instead of the D5 was the noise at idle. The 2.0D is much more refined, the D5 on the other hand sounds better when revved. However, even though the 5 cylinder sounds great during acceleration it was too loud for my taste, the 4 cyl PSA lump is much quieter and it suits a convertible better (for a diesel, of course).
@@andymclaughlin4345 maybe that’s the case with the auto gearbox - the Geartronic on D5 was slow and the engine revved high on every gear, so it made the D5 always audible present. The 2.0D I have it’s a 6 speed manual, so besides acceleration for overtaking it is hardly noticeable in the cabin. The one thing that really put me off from the D5 were the vibrations on the steering wheel during idle + the audible presence of that diesel - the car was maintained properly, technically brilliant etc, but the engine kinda was always “showing” us that its running. I didn’t notice that with the 2.0D. However, I think that the best choice for C70 would be the T5. I wish I went for it :D
Interesting point re changing the automatic gearbox's fluid. My local Volvo dealer initially refused to carry it out on my V70 D5, claiming that the box was "sealed for life" (or "sealed for death" in reality). After some persuasion they reluctantly agreed to do it... and then a year later, without warning, the car burst into flames: the gearbox had exploded. Not sure what lesson to learn from that!
Another great video Matt. I've owned Volvos since 1992 and possible owned every variant of the Volvo estates. However, this is stunning I certainly think one day I'll have a V90. Keep up with your fantastic videos. P.S...Happy New Year.
Ah yes, the Euro Dawn French Comfort Rating. Definitely 5 Star score there :-) Jeremy Clarkson reckoned that the booster seats were probably designed by a Volvo engineer that had kids. Makes you wonder why such a clever idea is not found in more cars. Do like the intuitive heating/ventilation controls, simple and functional with great design.
About time you did a review on a Subaru outback 2015-2019! I own one, would you believe it!😉. Maybe they're not that common in Britain? Subarus are loved by auto magazines here in Sweden.
I know a few friends who have owned these. All say best car they've had especially with the 2.4 5 cylinder diesel. They like the mix of power and practicality. Economy much better than you would expect too.
I've got a 57 plate d5 186hp V70. Nice car but last owner lived in the very north of Scotland. So components were a problem with rust but car chassis and body are good. Timing belt kit and water pump changed. Removed water from radiator and used 100% coolant. Gear box oil changed brake pads discs and brake oil changed, all round new tyres new rear shock absorbers 7 full service done within a 10,000 miles. Now next week complete new exhaust being bought at a cost of 960pounds. Total spent on it excluding purchase 4000pounds so far. But I have had 39mpg in town.
Basically. No. And I love V70s and Volvos. The previous gen D5 is a yes. Not this. Just me. It’s duller than dull to drive. It just doesn’t drive. It doesn’t waft. It’s amazingly good apart from to drive. Sad. I still love it’s looks.
Voivos - yes, boring, yes, noisy, yes, suspension components (just had to pay for 2 new springs for MOT). But they're really nice to drive, they're practical, they're comfortable, and they're reliable. My Volvo is the first car in many cars since my TR6 / Dolomite Sprint era in the 80s that I can honestly say means something to me, other than a means of getting from my geography lessons to the local National Trust estate on the weekend.
As a fanboy of Volvos, I do like the 5 cylinder sounds. I have a 2017 V60 Cross Country T5 with the Drive-E turbo 4 now and while I miss the howl of my 2006 S60 T5, I love the fuel economy of the 4 banger. I have a 6.5cm thick stack of records on my '06 with everything from PCV kits, to tail light housings, to control arm bolts from the dealer. Honestly, I can't wait to get to that point with my V60. I'm curious to see how well it will drive with a set of aftermarket anti-roll bars and Bilstein shocks like I had on my '06.
My parents just picked up a silly clean 2012 1.6d DRIVe. I thought it would be a slug, but I was surprised by how good and drivable it felt! While they aren't exciting, they can be worth considering in my opinion. But then, if excitement is what you're after a V70 is the wrong car. I personally want one as well now to replace my Saab 9-3.
I think there still expensive. Even at 10years old there still a lot. Looked at a 2012 a little wile back and it was £12,500 I even looked at getting a T reg 1999 back in 2005 that was £10k i picked up a 2002 focus diesel instead for £6k the volvo had 90k on the clock too.
@@chrishart8548 There is the occasional bargain to be had, if you don't mind not having a big estate rear end the S80 is much more attainable, plus the spec can be much higher.
@@Zerofightervi I do prefer estate though unfortunately. And diesel, and automatic. 4x4 would be nice but just a diesel automatic estate is expensive. Especially vs a petrol manual hatchback.
Have you seen my Rate my Ride submission? It’s the MK3 R design in metallic black, it’s got a newer dash than the one you’re driving and it’s the 1.6 DRIVe 🤣 I’m 26 by the way and the stereo either plays Kiss fm/capital or banging choons from me phone 📱. 30 a year tax is great and it seems to be great on diesel and I’m heavy footed. it flys up and down the motor way really well for a smaller diesel, nice and quite while cruising too considering the bigger wheels, it is hard over the bumpers though.
The V70 front passenger seat also folds forward to give even more space for carrying those longer bits of gear. 2 levers underneath the rear of the seat. As you say the front suspension legs wear quicker on the MK3 due to Ford influence. Rear suspension trailing arm bushes also wear/ delaminate after about 50/'60k and make a loud squeaking from the back seat area. Let down by the noisy engine especially in the low years although the D5 if looked after is bullet proof. I might be tempted back to Volvo but compared to Jaguar XF the don't stand much chance. Good honest review 👍
Volvo has become rather cool, when I was young my dad had a 244 GLE great car but not that cool, recently I've followed Volvo on FB and there are some seriously stunning vehicles on there. Great review thank you, Cheers

@@moneymandan6217 oh gosh lol I’ve seen that! Makes sense 🤣
Unfortunately I knew what he meant
This generation V70 was actually based on the Mondeo. It's amazing how they tuned out every inch of driver appeal from those underpinnings.
Always had a soft spot for the V70, had a Volvo in the past and just found it a reliable work horse.
I've always wanted one but seem to end up with a ford mondeo instead usually 5-6k cheaper similar age and spec. And the volvo at the same price is the previous model so probably less safe in a crash. 2000 year volvo vs 2006 model mondeo
one thing i love about your reviews you give is how detailed you are. not many other reviewers do this and it really helps people in buying their next car.
brilliant.
Thanks!
Had mine for a year-terrific car at 180000 miles. You're right about the R-Design. Love the way you review cars of all ages.
Saddo that I am posting a reply to myself-still a great car at 217000 miles
Feels a sporty as Dawn French absolutely lovely Matt hilarious
That 5 cylinder diesel is an absolute beauty and I think, sounds fantastic.
The D5 185bhp from around 2006 to 2010 wasn't great. Improved much after that. And you're right about the MPG!
Great review , apart from the best engine I have come across its the 5 cylinder Petrol turbo '
Which is basically the same unit as the focus ST and it's a hoot '
A real sleeper ' yet It returned 38mpg at motorway speeds on a trip to Switzerland

Hi matt, along with the National Trust sticker it also comes complete with a complimentary packet of Werther`s Original sweets in the glove box 😊😊😊😊
A lovely Swedish car. Is the type of a car that Ray Mears would drive. And I’m sure he has one.. Definitely a XC70 👍🏻
Definitely his cup of tea
Nettle tea
I used to watch Ray Mears on TV.
A great review as always. We've got a V50 T5 AWD and its like the proverbial off a shovel. Looks understated too.
I love Volvos mind you I am43!😂 and my dad drove a Volvo 240gl in the early 80’s
Like these but prefer the front end of the previous generation.
I'm a wagon guy, love Volvos and Mercs wagons 🎉🤩
I always used to want the XC70, it always looked good!
Bought one recently as the winters here can be quite extreme. Really pleased with it, comfy, safe, awd and easy on diesel.
Haha it makes sense... Nowhere to shower in the morning though
@@HighPeakAutos Ah but Matt think parking beside a Loch or river, nothing
beats a cooling draft of fresh mountain water to enliven the skin !!
Finally, a V70 beating Formula 1 !!
I have one since 3 years, still a 57 plate. Everything you said is precise and yes, was the best hotel on wheel on my NC500 trip. Awesome car.
Canadian here. Looking to import a V70 from Sweden for my next winter vehicle. They do make a stylish minimalist car
I prefer the looks of the xc70. Any chance of a review?
'More room than a French roadside B&B'. Now there's a voice of experience! ;-)
Haha sadly yes
That’s quite right
This is a mighty moment for a man with a fetish with 'old man estates'. Cheers Matt, excellent as ever!
Hahah Cheers
Must admit I have one of those too. My fav matchbox car when I was a kid was a 244 estate.
An aul fella at 6......
Never, ever, have I liked ANY car or van with a French engine, petrol or diesel,
I swear to God they are designed by the descendants of the fallen at Agincourt/Waterloo/Trafalgar: For Export to the UK only.
@@patagualianmostly7437 Yeah, I'm not sure I like the racist overtones in that comment.
Hi David,
Jay's recently reviewed an XC70 and was very impressed. You might want to check this out;
ruclips.net/video/xj4OMPWAZUM/видео.html
THe stitch on the seats are 'sail' type on the XC. THere's also an attractive handrail all the way from the front of the center console to back. The raised height of the XC does a better job than the regular V70 on badly maintained roads for sure.
Just bought one of these, a 2013 T4 with 142000 km on the clock. Really like it so far: tons of space, comfortable and a pretty fuel efficient engine. Unless it breaks down completely, I can’t see myself getting rid of it for 10 years at least👍
For a Teachers/Geeks car, I think these V70's are pretty cool! Great review, thanks Mat.
Great review again, thanks! Used to have the 2.4 D5 in the old xc90 and loved the racket it made, thought it sounded great on the kick down, for a diesel !Now we have a Q7 3.0 TDI V6 and miss my D5 sounds :-( first world problems lol 😂
Another great video one again, absolutely adore 5 cylinder engines
I remember road trips in the "before times". 😢 Like the car. The boxy old Volvos are hipster bait now, full circle on the coolness chart. 🤷🏻♂️
This video helped me buy my V70 2.4D 2008 and I did a check on car vertical before 😊
Another excellent review. Thank you! I have always loved Volvos for their quality feel, solid reliable motors, nice to drive and comfy. Cheers
Thanks for watching!
Please make a video on the V50!
Great review as per usual. I'm surprised you haven't reviewed a recent 330i!
Thanks! Ill try and get hold of one
Living in Kent now and realise I watch half of the videos to see if I can spot places from my old stomping ground🤣

@@HighPeakAutos Hazel Grove, with friends in Buxton, New Mills, Marple, so plenty of locations I remember. But good with the cars as well. Porsche 996 Targa does not fit my dog (legally anyway) and he's only 6 months old, so trawling through videos on estate cars and.....the only SUV I would buy which is the Range Rover.
So thanks for making it really confusing 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I have a 2009 V70 .. straight six 3.0 litre petrol with turbo.and all wheel drive. So fast with the turbo .. love the car one of the best or the 23 vehicles I ever owned. Great review thanks
I had a C70 d5, and it just sounded wonderful. it has a growl, which beats any 4cyl diesel
Agreed 👍🏼 I appreciate my XC60 D5s growl so much I can’t imagine ever going back to the clutter of a 4 pot Diesel 🙈🤣
@@damianschreinert9169 I've had both engines. currency the 2.0d in a s40 with powershift. it's good, but I find it so noisy
Go to an independent Volvo specialist?!?
Another great video Matt. I've owned Volvos since 1992 and possible owned every variant of the Volvo estates. However, this is stunning I certainly think one day I'll have a V90.
Keep up with your fantastic videos. P.S...Happy New Year.
Ah yes, the Euro Dawn French Comfort Rating. Definitely 5 Star score there :-)
Jeremy Clarkson reckoned that the booster seats were probably designed by a Volvo engineer that had kids. Makes you wonder why such a clever idea is not found in more cars.
Do like the intuitive heating/ventilation controls, simple and functional with great design.
I love your explanation, it's satisfying. I have tried checking on you video of Mercedes Benz ML 350 2010 model
Loved the Reg Varney quip. I doubt many of your followers will even know who he was. Turning circle of a bus comes to mind. Great review .
I bought one for a member of staff a few years it was one of the most relaxing cars I’ve ever driven . You didn’t want to drive it fast .
Gotta fix your sleeve...we can’t see the Explorer II on the wrist!
I have the xc70 d5 for my work car . It's so comfortable and easy to live with. Mine is a mk3 and does everything I need . Great review as usual.
I'm a massive fan of this channel brilliant content . Great job matt .
I have waited for this video actually!👍🏻 yours videos is always on top!
Hope you enjoyed it!
Was looking at one of these, but went for a Skoda Superb estate 4x4 instead. I hope you approve!
Good choice!
I had a Superb Estate courtesy car whilst my wife's Karoq was in for a recall. Fantastic car, I loved everything about it.
I have an unhealthy obsession with checking autotrader for these.
Volvo V70s are just a classy no nonsense wagon, I'd have one in a heartbeat.
I see the appeal
@@chrishart8548 Sounds like you're more in the market for the XC70, that seems to tick those boxes.
I bought a 2003 V70 2.4 two years ago. Did a mini restoration on it, thing runs like new with nearly 300,000 on it!
In love with Volvos, Iv got a C30 coupe diesel.
High maintenance but solid AF.

Love the Reg Varney reference!
The S60 and V70 D5 take a map really well, with noticable difference in power and fuel economy. 👍
Volvo has become rather cool, when I was young my dad had a 244 GLE great car but not that cool, recently I've followed Volvo on FB and there are some seriously stunning vehicles on there. Great review thank you, Cheers
