"Gigi"'s Oscar is a tribute to not only the film but its producer, Arthur Freed, whose MGM unit was responsible for several superior film musicals for several years. This was his career climax. Tastes changed and the original film musical was basically dead after the 1950s. "Best Picture" musicals were stage-to-film transfers ("West Side Story" to "Chicago") after "Gigi," although its tunesmiths were Broadway's Lerner & Loewe. Gigi deserved every Oscar.
@@lepetitchat123 I'll agree on that Singing in the Rain is really not all that good, With a Song in my Heart with Susan Hayward is 10 xs better than either one!
@@ballwreck1139 I'm sorry to disagree with you Gigi was an overblown musical film with charm and at times it was entertaining, however The Big Country was really a bit better, however Hollywood wasn't ready for a sprawling Western Film to get the Oscar, and sadly it wasn't even mentioned in nomination, Burl Ives Won for Best Supporting Actor in a role that was twice as good as any actor in Gigi! Many people think that The Big Country was robbed of many awards including Best Score(Music) that Jerome Moross should have Won, you may not believe this but now after all these years many people believe this to be true!
@@scottmiller6495 I agree about "Gigi", but I think that "The Big Country" was overblown, also! Plus, I can't even recall "Separate Tables" which won best actor/actress!
Could you please (elsewhere on YT of course) put up the ending of this Oscarcast, which according to published sources, ended 20 minutes early, and featured M.C. Jerry Lewis ad-libbing like crazy.
@EricAKATheBelgianGuy And that was followed up by NBC -- which had the Oscars at the time -- filling the remaining time with a short film about pistols (boy, I'd LOVE to see that)!
I just watched Gigi and the question is..how that movie got 9 statuettes besides the best picture? I didn't watch all 59's films, but they had Vertigo which it is amazing. That's disappointed Academy.
dr strangelove let me get this straight. You’re ripping her for slipping on a single word in English, in front of millions of people, yet you write this mess: “I wish Mr. Grant or Mr. Lewis would have presented the Oscar instead, they where both soo funny comideans! :D And I have NO IDEA how Freed could be serius when he won his Oscar beacuse Gigi is a so hatedfilm. :) “ Get the fuck out of here. Ingrid Bergman spoke Swedish, German and French fluently, and was damned near fluent in English and Italian. I don’t know what third world shit hole you crawled out of, but you sure as hell can’t write in English.
I always have to wonder how much better the film "Gigi" would have been if Audrey Hepburn had reprised her title role in the 1951 Broadway production. I believe that the producer and/or director offered her the role but that she turned it down. Leslie Caron's singing voice in the movie was dubbed by Marni Nixon, who would also dub Miss Hepburn's singing voice in "My Fair Lady" (1964).
... sorry I dont think much of "Gigi" but "Separate Tables" featured what might have been Deborah Kerr's worst performance and David Nicen is barely present...
Bergman is horrible in real Life, imo. I wish Mr. Grant or Mr. Lewis would have presented the Oscar instead, they where both soo funny comideans! :D And I have NO IDEA how Freed could be serius when he won his Oscar beacuse Gigi is a so hatedfilm. :)

Shes so beautiful... Oh my god... So much pureness..
"Welcome back" sounds so sweet coming from the great Cary. I can't imagine how sad it was for Ingrid when Hollywood and USA were so bad to her.
Well she wasn't so great to her kids, was she?

i've never seen her hair so long. it's lovely :)
one of the most beautiful movies ever ! if you havent seen this on the big screen...find one !
This movie literally features a song called "Thank Heaven For Little Girls". No thanks, I'll pass.
Auntie Mame and Gigi are equally wonderful in their own unique way!
This belonged to Vertigo
I love Gigi.

In 1968 Oliver Twist won best picture...
I adore Gigi. For me it’s one of the best. I rate it higher than Singing in the Rain
The Big Country deserved to win Best Picture of 1958 and it wasn't even considered, what a horrible oversight!!!!!
@@lepetitchat123 I'll agree on that Singing in the Rain is really not all that good, With a Song in my Heart with Susan Hayward is 10 xs better than either one!
Vertigo should have been nominated and won. Touch of Evil needs to be nominated also.
In my opinion is vice versa: touch of evil should have won
No The Big Country deserved to win!
Gigi deserved the win.

The real winner: Vertigo.
Or "Touch of evil"
The Defiant Ones was the best of the nominees.
Separate Tables was boring af. I couldn’t watch after 15 minutes
Totally!!
