Hi all! I put this video up because there was nothing else (really) on RUclips about a timeline of helicopters at the time. Please note the following errors:
-Osprey's engines are not accurate, 160th spec ops instead of 106th, Z-10 model, Pronunciation of Chinook

Austin Olney I don't think you can do a video called history of helicopters without talking about Eurocopter or at least (if for some reason you hate the biggest helicopter manufacturer in the world) the Allouette II wich was the first mass produce turbine helicopter.
Or you can call it history of american helicopter and a bit of russian

Yes, but the CH-54 is a heavy lift cargo helicopter, the only true weapon it has carried has been an air-burst bomb used to clear out forests in the Vietnam war.
(Also, I'd like to say that aside from some errors, the video is really well done, and I'd like to see more, maybe with a bit more research, or even just something completely different. There is potential here.)

Dadgum son! It isn’t the 106th Aviation Regiment. It’s the 160th! On a different note. The reason the army phased out the Huey was because of its lack of survivability and load capacity. To overcome this. The UH-60 and AH-64 airframes included 2 engines each but can operate on just one. This was in contrast to the single engine UH/AH-1 airframes with one engine. If an engine fails in flight. You’re in a bad spot. With that redundancy, there’s the added benefit of load capacity. 4 rotor blades rather than 2. Which increases lift and load capacity. I work on 60’s. They’re ok. Sikorsky engineers have been creative with what they’ve been able to fit into every nook and cranny. Man is it sometimes a pain to work on from an avionics standpoint. With that said. They have some of the best reliability in the army inventory. Ford pickup truck of army aviation.

I am surprised you did not mention the Cornu Helicopter, the first helicopter to successfully achieve lift, developed in 1907. The PKZ-1 and PKZ-2, developed in 1917-1918 Austro-Hungaria, was another very important part of the developmental history of helicopters.
Also, if you are going to discuss production helicopters, bring up the Focke-Achgelis Fa 223 and Flettner Fl 282, one of the first helicopters to enter production and military service, being introduced around 1941. Predating the Sikorsky R-4.

You totally missed out autogyros, the precursor to modern helicopters as we know today. The rotor dynamics that enable rotorcraft flight came from autogyros. You're just presenting different models of helicopters in this video.

  • @johnratliff318

This really is not a complete history of helicopters, as some were left off. The Kaman helicopters, including the HH-43 Huskie, were not represented, and yet they provided a very different version of the helicopter. The HH-3E was missed, and the HH-53 actually started production in 1970. So while there are nice things in this video, and I gave it a "Thumbs Up," it is a very rough approximation of helicopter history.
