Thank you very much! More to follow, but this turns out *not* to be an R7. I'll have a video soon telling the entire story, but whatever model, the guitar plays and sounds beautifully.
@@BBQROCKSTAR178 I think this is a case of Gibson not eating their own dogfood! Their SN guide clearly wants this to be a '99 CS R7, but when I emailed them, their internal records say this is a CS special order from August of '97! I wanted it for its top, specs, and neck profile, so not being a Reissue model doesn't hurt my heart in the slightest, but for everyone who said, "Damn, that's the weirdest R7 ever," congrats! Because it *isn't* one 🤣🤣
Thanks for the comment! I'd have preferred it with the nickel covers, but that's how it came so that's how I'm rockin' it. Those '57 Classics have exactly the voice I wanted, though!
Strange indeed! I don't suspect a re-fin, but I have questioned whether this was indeed an R7. Remember that this is a late 90s Custom Shop, so the SN format may be different. I may just reach out to Gibby to see what they have to say about it. The neck profile and reflector knobs suggest more of an R0-like configuration anyway, so it's a true mystery. Cheers!
I found this page helpful: www.gibson.com/en-US/Support/Serial-Number-Search It agrees with my Custom Shop 6-digit serial being a '57 Reissue from 1999. Hope that helps!
Abso-fucking-lutely gorgeous!!! Those slightly yellowed inlays are the shit. It's what we talked about earlier. Tenshi definitely has that Awesome fiddle, man. Congrats!! \m/
The only thing I don't like is the top, they did t use fancy tops on LP's back then. I dislike guitars that look real fancy but that's a personal thing, the fact they put a top like that on a "1957" guitar is not legit.
Heya Tele! You're absolutely correct about the tops on modern "reissues" not being anything vaguely similar to historic guitars. Aesthetically, I personally adore quilt-tops, so Gibby offering historic-spec guitars with these amazing modern figures suits me just fine! A true purist looking for the most faithful copy of an original gold-top or burst probably won't appreciate this '99 CS R7, it's true, but hey -- that's why God makes more than one guitar! Cheers bud, thanks for stopping by.
Saying they didn't use fancy tops on LPs back then is just plain wrong. They did. Just not always. It would've been a run of the mill. Some 50's LP's are figured as fuck. Having said that, usually '57s are gold tops or ebony. Which makes this guitar even cooler, imo. Ymmv.
Does anyone even care how they play Anymore?😁 Look at this flametop blah blah blah look at this quilt blah blah blah blah! JK🤣 That is a killer looking guitar. First Quilt top R7 I have ever seen? Usually always gold tops? Looks more like a Yamano R0?
I KNOW. The obsession over specs and wood and blah blah, it's exhausting!! I just got an email back from Gibby yesterday saying this is *not* an R7, that it's a one-off Custom Shop customer order from 1997! Imported by Yamano Music to Japan, who probably placed the order, then the doc trail dies until it showed up on Reverb last June. More coming soon!
Good morning! The rumor / general feeling / legend / lore among players is that "Gibson quality was spotty through the 2010s" and "Gibson quality is improving since the 2018 ownership change." You can find plenty of exceptions to both, for sure. This guitar is a '99 Custom Shop instrument, *very* different from Gibson USA main-line production. I'll have some videos on the way soon that'll let you hear it for yourself and see what you think! Thanks for the comment; cheers and take care.
Some of the most overrated guitars in the world. All you old timers spending 4k on a reissue of a 57 or 59 are being played. If you have ever played a real one you know they are cheap copy’s. Gibsons last good years were 2005
What are you even talking about? 1999 was early custom shop peak, they made some mighty fine instruments, look at that top...you don't get stuff like that in 2005, comparing a 90s reissue to a real burst is like comparing a Ferrari to a Chevy, great guitar, wish you a lot of joy with it
I’m impressed with your zero content yet you say you review gear. Does that mean you say negative things about other people’s joy? You probably have a horrible album with a horrible band and nothing original about you. Stay out of people’s comments with your trash
Congratulations on your new acquisition!!!

Good for you man! That top is wild. 25 years old already, crazy. Hope you enjoy it!
Hey thanks a lot, man. That's really cool for you to say; I appreciate the support.
@@ScotticusZ cheers mate! Peeked at the channel, seems you have a few beauty’s in your collection! Love to see it.
@taketwo1076 heh yeah, sorry the musicianship isn't better 😅
Get after it, Ray!
Shit, just saw this.
Preciosa! 😎... some cream pickups would be the icing on the cake ! 🙂

Strange to have a 7 serial #. Historic Custom shop reissues had goldtops. Could this one be a re fin?

Have fun with the intonation ! Welcome to every Gibson ever ! Never can intonate them properly ! Low E and G haha go prs never look back !
Hi John! Not sure what you're on about; the intonation on both of my Gibbies is spot-on. Care to be more specific? Cheers and thanks for the comment!
Dream on, John. Another insolent know-nothing with no real-world experience with any Gibson. Enjoy your dull sounding, ostentatious looking PRS.

@These_go_to_eleven_1959 That's almost verbatim what Gibson said! Thanks man, appreciate the appreciation. More to come soon!
had not played a new gibson in 20 years, heard they were better. i played a 5k goldtop recently. felt and looked cheap, pass.
