One thing I like is you showcase these through a more common amp. A lot of times you get channels playing through a $3,000 hand wired boutique amp, and then say "Oh, we want it to sound as best as possible". Great video this week. I am loving my Revstar P90 in black like yours. My main guitar upto now has been an 2020 Epiphone Les Paul 60’s STD upgraded with a set of House of Tone TruPAF’s and 50’s wiring. The Revstar is great out of the box, really versatile.

When the camera is on I get nervous and don’t feel I play as well. Trust me your playing is perfect. I respect you and your honesty very much. I grew up during a the 80’s and 90’s and relate to your references. Especially the love of the white Epiphone Les Paul Custom link to Steve Jones. I love the Cure as well. Cool birthday present Col. Yes I’m one from last weeks video comments. You were kind enough to reply. Thanks mate, awesome comparison & playing 👍 You’re my favourite channel by far for reviews. You’re totally relatable & likeable but best of all no BS. Thanks for being you brother 😀
Don't do it, man. It's not a guitar, it's do you pick up if you don't like the way the s g which stands for solid guitar works for you.I don't know what to tell you
Really love your channel man! Its great now two weeks in a row, Friday afternoon working from home, put on the kettle sit back and watch a new episode. Love the gear you review and think you play great! Keep it up man.
Great vid as always mate! If I could suggest another p90 loaded LP-shows guitar - Burny. I bought mine last year (gold top) and really love it! Replaced the pickups with lollars and I’ll be honest it really didn’t make that much difference to the tone (IMHO) - don’t know what the stock pickups are, but they are very good. Keep up the great content Col!
I picked up a used Indonesian P90 Revstar locally last year on a whim and quickly fell in love with it, and a few months back picked up a Gibson LP Special and fell in love with that too. I owe the Revstar a great deal for opening my eyes to P90s. For a $500 guitar the Indonesian Revstars are phenomenal and it holds its own up against my Gibson. I cannot praise the Revstar enough. Yamaha really nailed it with these guitars.
C'mon man, you've got a great channel. I feel like I'm having a chat with my good mate when I I'm here. You speak the language of "Everyman" and you leave your ego at the door. Any your playing is great man!! I wish I could play as good as you. It's so obvioushow much you enjoy making these vids, you're like a kid in a candy shop, especially when you get something new in your hands. Don't ever change and stop beatin' yourself up!!!!
Col, this video has come at such a wonderful time as I've been gassing for the p90 revstar for a long time and loved the JoBo les Paul! As for noodling - whenever I watch your videos and my wife is next to me she always perks up and says 'go on boy!' cheering you on. being your own biggest critic is a strength but don't let that be the only opinion on the matter! Keep up the stellar work!!
Buy a old SG instead the quality and playability is unbeatable, £750 gets you an sg600 say and it only goes up in value, but top of the range revstars are nice(I have one) stay away from base models they're not so good of course this is only my worthless opionion to a complete stranger.😁
I love all these guitars! P90s are my new love. I just bought the Epiphone sg special. I already had the Epiphone Les paul studio which has th cheap humbuckers, but I wish I had bought the sg first. There is nothing like p90s and for me the sg is the sweet spot. I’m just a 49 year old beginner 3 years or so in. And not very good but I do know what I like to hear. As always you help keep the fire going to learn and to keep trying. Absolutely love your videos. Thanks so much. Cheers
The sg is nearly perfect in sound and play ability. The only thing I don't like is the plug location. Such a beautiful guitar is being upstaged by a cord. You have the ability to make any guitar sound great.
I've never been a fan of the output jack location on the SG. I've seen so many cracked tops due to the jack getting jerked sideways by someone stepping on their guitar cord. That said, it's never steered me away from buying one.
Hey Col, great video man!!! I've been curious about those Revstars for quite awhile now. Maybe one of these days I'll get one. They look pretty nice!!! Until then, I guess I'm stuck playing my Gibson SG Special. Life is soooo unfair!!!🤣🤣🤣 They all sound pretty good, I just wish that LP was a Gold Top. Now that I think about it, a Gold Top Revstar would be pretty cool. With cream P-90s, nickel plated hardware and no pickguard... Have a great weekend, see you next week!!!
Colin! Man you'rd awesome! If I could criteque with kindness, I would gently say that the sound you get from your setup doesnt let the individuality of the guitars shine through. They all have a certain scratchy drivey trebally tone, no matted what guitar you're playing. On the other shows you refer to.. TPS etc, those guys are using many different set ups, different amps, pedals etc. I would love to hear you change up your pedal board .. maybe move away from the RAT, and try some other pedals. It'd be a refreshing change. Keep up the fantastic work and thankyou for your passion bringing us your very entertaining show! Rock on geezer!
Cheers man that's appreciated! 😎👍 Difficult to know where else I could go with the amp rig... I use the Princeton 65 as it is such a staple amp and as I'm essentially 'reviewing' guitars rather than trying to tweak them to sound their best I like to give everything an even chance without using too much in the way of pedals... and I guess trebly scratchy is the sound in my head 😂 but I agree its a bit too bitey sometimes. I have been leaning towards digging out the Blackstar's though... 🤔 What's your go-to amp?
You've got a Epiphone Les Paul special in TV yellow right behind you. That would have been good in that mix instead of the Gibson perhaps. Great video Colin. Lovely jubbly.
Thanks! I'd take the SG because it's Gibson😂 I pick up a Les Paul and I'm home. From 72 learning to play guitar too my hayday band, opening in 82 for the old band Foghat at a music festival in Toledo OH; the Les Paul wins the day for me. Probably in my head but the LP is my guitar, p90's, mini humbuckers and or PAF's love them. It's same with Marshall amps and Triumph bikes....
Just chiming in as a fan of the channel! Would love your take on some of the ESP/LTD guitars that play pretty well.. they have a single cut, single pickup guitar (EC 01) that I’d love to see from you!
I have the Joe B LP on preorder because I've always wanted a 55/56 LP with P90s, so it is closer to what I want. I prefer the LP control set, etc., and I don't actually want the clarity of the Revstar (I have Teles for that). However, I'm worried that the build quality still makes the Revstar the one to get.
Oh my giddy aunt, this is exactly the video I have needed to see, because these are the 3 guitars I am considering buying. This is timely enough. And as usual, your playing is just great. I can always tell when you really connect with an instrument. Your soul comes out in the open. Cheers mate.
I own the exact same Yamaha Revstar. I wasn't a fan of the "mud" boost switch, and although the pickups sounded good, to my ear they weren't great. I swapped out the pickups for a set of Seymour Duncan Hot P90 Silencers, and upgraded all the electronics to higher quality components, as well as replaced the blade switch with a simple 3-way. So the Mud switch and transformer are removed, and it's a very simple bridge, neck or both switching setup. Sounds great!
I love my Revstar RSS20. It has humbuckers vs the P90s, but the playability and feel suits me. Many people have trashed the Yam, but I personally love it. I'm still not sold on the JO BO. My Epi SG Classic has the P90s, but up against the Yam, I still prefer the Yam. We all have our preferences. Noodle on my fellow musician, noodle on.
Yamaha make some of the best guitars on the market, only people who care about what's on the headstock will trash your guitar. For those of us who know, we know.
Gotta say I appreciate that more than techno-speak goes into an appreciation of a guitar- and the full acknowledgment of looks being a big part of it, and influences like Slash or whoever. One thing I'd like to see is a video on P90 and humbucker SGs/Les Pauls/whichever and what the differences there are like (or, if anyone knows of one that exists, point me to it). In any case, thanks for the destination viewing, and I'm looking forward to whatever you do next week. Fantastic fun.
The best thing about this show is seeing and hearing guitars that my local music shops would never have in them. The neck on the revstar gets me its side, you just can't beat the feel of a satin neck vs a gloss neck. Great video yet again ,cheers
I wish you would have included your Epiphone p90 Sg Special instead of the Gibson . That would have been more fair. Your channel continues to be my favorite on RUclips. Cheers from New York City!
Hahaha - Colin what a surprise! You choose the SG! 😂 So everybody has HIS guitar! The Les Paul is mine over all other designs! And so we are all happy! Greetings from Germany! 👋😎🎸
I just love this channel, I always get about half way and have to pause and play guitar, then return later.. also every week without fail, makes me itch for a new guitar 😅
I wanted to add Colin, that even with P90s, your Revstar has that slight bit of overdrive sound that the others didn't have. I notice it on mine too. Amp set at just the point of break up and the sound barely 'growls'. Turn up the guitar volume and it takes it into OD slightly. I didn't hear that with the LP and SG. The Yam has a baby lion inside..grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr....Just an add on from my previous comment. My Epi SG Classic with P90s was 400 Euros this year. It's not a cheap guitar by any means and it came flawless with no QA issues. Super guitar. I'm with you on SG models. Something about them feel nice on the lap, but it comes down to sound and my Yam and your Yam beats that LP JO BO any day of the week. Have a great weekend.
I'm glad you came out and said that the Les Paul was uncomfortable. It is! I've been getting used to finding a position on my knee that works, but it remains a heavy, strangely balanced guitar. I tried out an SG at a guitar store the other day and it was so light, comfortable, and easy to play.
Check out the Tokai Love Rock (made in China) Goldtop with P-90s. I really recommend it. The Yammy of course is good, too but I have a heart for Les Pauls with P-90s and I am still very happy Epiphone released this model. Thanks Colin for this video. Your videos always are a joy and I am looking forward to every new one.
Col. I've just watched the first two minutes of the upload and have stopped it to say we all say that about our own playing! But I know you are a much better player than me and I've been playing for many years.
I play the guitar on my left knee as in classical position. And I always use a strap to help keep the guitar from slipping. Then when I stand up the guitar is in a similar position on my body.
Good Day Sir! When you started this video with the SG I thought the SG had a little more grits to it’s tone, I have the Epiphone JB Les Paul and I think it’s a nice playing and sounding guitar. I have been looking at the Yamaha also and it might be my next purchase All 3 Guitars are great and you can’t go wrong with either of them, Guitars are like women , it what attracts the player, it doesn’t mean the other women are not worthy to just what sight and sound attracts the opposite sex. I enjoy your humble and honest opinion. I look at it like this if you were playing in a pub and I was walking by and heard what you were putting down , it wouldn’t matter what guitar you took to the gig. It’s about music when it comes down to it. I wish you good health and peace!
It would have been interesting if you had thrown in the Epiphone SG special (the pelham blue one on the wall) instead of the Gibson - might have been a fairer fight lol. Thanks again for your work and keep rocking my friend!
Great stuff chief ! Haven’t played the Epiphone but have noodled the Revestar up against a PRS DGT SE . Revstar wins for me for playability and a clearer more upfront sound . Not a Bonamassa fan but I did try the Tomato Soup Epiphone and it was disappointing even although it had Burstbuckers on board and as the P90 one a good quality case , Revstar comes with a decent gig bag . Can’t adjust to the neck on an SG which is heartbreaking for a Zappa nut !!
I'm a bit of a newbie and only have a les paul knock off by Artist guitars here in Australia. I've been looking to get new guitar and have tried a lot of guitars. I recently had a crack on the Revstar p90 and it was by far the most comfortable ergonomic guitar I have tried. No more clawing around the neck join for the higher frets like on my les paul. And you might find this sacrilegious Col, but I'm not a fan of the SG neck, (nothing to do with neck dive) I feel like I have to reach more than I'd like for the frets at the end of the neck. I'll be saving a few $ and getting a Revstar and the revstar look has grown on me. Thanks for the content Col and as far as your playing sounds good to me. I'm slow motioning your playing on the original revstar p90 review to learn how to play solo well
All 3 are killer. Yamaha makes such a good guitar for the price. They just aren’t sexy like Gibsons , but damn do they play! Great comparison. Cheers Colin! Loved this video.
great video as per, colin. always appreciate your thorough reviews and comparisons. i am not really a fan of any of the guitars in this particular vid, but really dig your production values and rad banter! i, personally, have never been swayed by, or inspired to purchase guitars played by my heroes-childhood or current! as an artist/musician, for some reason, i have to have instruments with just a certain something to set it apart from all the others-it's an annoying idiosyncratic personality quirk which i have to live with unfortunately! ;)
Loved this to bits. I would probably buy the Revstar now, but that's ONLY because I have already had the LP with P90s and I still think it makes me play better. Dunno why.
Really enjoy these comparison videos best on youtbe for me. I thought your playing was def more tasteful and relaxed this week. Its nice when people show support when you criticise your own playing but for me, the day I stop trying to get better on guitar is the day I stop wanting to play. Ive been playing for 30 years now and im still striving to get better. Its the struggle that gives us purpose 😁.
Another great review and some fine noodling! I've been gasing for a guitar with P90s for the past few years and every time a new one comes out I think that's the one. And then I see them in the flesh and I'm just not excited. I was in a local shop yesterday that had the new JB Epiphone. No wobbly knobs and no cockeyed pickups and then I picked it up. You could anchor an oil tanker it was so heavy. At twice the price it seems the best solution is to buy an SG. There is nothing like it!
Morning Squire, watching this while I’m peeling me spuds for the Sunday roasties. Col SG for me although that Revstar is a bit tasty. Right off to prepare me gravy from the chicken juices. Another great review mate.
Colin, could you throw in some more chordal/rhythm playing in reviews? Gives us a chance to hear the definition and separation from the pickups. Cheers.
I've loved the Revstar since I first saw it and I love Chris Buck's guitar work. I hope to get one one day but needs some pennies first. Great vid keep 'em coming
1:33 Personally not a lover of p90s though I do have some guitars with them my les paul with humbuckers is probably the one that's used the most..anyhoo great playing great show and since my other half has hidden the cooking sherry I'm now on apple cider vinegar...cheers mate 👍
I have an older Yamaha Pacifica, and 2 Yamaha amps - so I might be biased a little - but the Revstar is one I've been wanting for awhile. Yamaha has been in the sound business for years, not just guitars. I've had a few Epi's in my time and I don't miss them. If something happened to my Pacifica, I'd bury it and have a eulogy for it. Yamaha for the win!
Colin, I always look forward to your show and very much appreciate your presentation style. But as a spoiler alert for this episode, one only need to cast their eyes on your back wall. 😅 Great show, and thank you..!!
Colin, don’t ever sell yourself short. Your playing is terrific and very soulful. Would love to have seen you include the Pelham Blue Epiphone SG Special in this comparison because it would be a like-for-like in terms of price and quality of pickups and other components. I really like the Revstar and believe it to be superior to the Epiphones but I’ve been jonesing for the Epiphone SG Special for quite some time but then caught copper JoBo Les Paul and have been unable to come to a decision.
I've wanted a revstar since the new line came out...had to sell my electrics 😢. Still got a sexy Ibenez acoustic which I love. Love the channel Colin 🎵🎸
Hi Colin, always so pleasant to watch, put a big smile on my face. The other nice bloke, with the new kid on the block, is Matteo Mancuso, (still not quite as cool as Slash 😁).
I really love lots of different guitars.... Okay, I TRY to love all guitars, but I've been an SG guy since '73. Not judging, it's just the best guitar ever for me! Thanks for all you do! Love your playing.
I'm Stuck In! Wonderful playing as usual Sensei! Yeah, the SG in your hands is magical. Had my SG out the other day after playing everything except my Revstars and Strat, and the SG was like home you know, feel, tone, playability... I am drinking my coffee out of my Yamaha Mug this morning. The mug matches my guitars in color, so yeah, I bought them all with my eyes. Thing is none of them dissapointed me in purpose and give me that pride of ownership with a built in bonus of being a good value. OK, the Pro model cost me quite a bit in trade in but it was bloody worth it. 😉 Colin, I was wathcing some launch videos for higher end Pacificas and it brought to mind something I've wondered before, How are the budget Pacifica models? I've never tried one myself. They are basically Strat copies, I think with HSS configurations. Anyway, someone said they were popular in Europe and the UK. I got the Tenere 700 back the other day. New Clutch courtesy of Yamaha, extra capacity fuel tank so I can easily go over 200 miles per tank, hardwired GPS, Heated grips few other bits. Tomorrow i'm taking it for a blast! Cheers! Two week countdown for the big trip.
The weight is why I only use my Gibson SG Standard w 490s, SG Standard w SD noiseless humbucker sized P90s, and a Fender Thinline Telecaster w noiseless single coils. All 3 come in right around 6 lbs. Saves my bad back.
I have been looking at a slew of Yamaha guitars and I think they should be respected more. They make high end guitars but they also make affordable ones that are very satisfying.
Thanks for the great review. Personally, I would be looking for a vintage 1980s Yamaha SG and swap in P-90s. Those Yammy guitars from the early 1980s were beautiful instruments. MIJ, beautifully crafted and have aged well. As for a decent Gibson SG type guitar, Ibanez used to make a ripper replica, once again back in the 1980s. I spent some time with a triple humbucker Custom variant back in the day ... and boy did that thing cook! Cheers from the Land Down Under.
I don't even have to watch to know the answer as I bought the Epiphone SG Special several months ago after watching another shootout with the Revstar. I was all set to buy the Revstar, but that video convinced me it wasn't even a contest. As for the Les Paul, I've seen two in depth reviews and I didn't care for it in either one. I'll stick with my Firefly LP P90. Like Colin, P90s are my favorite and SG is my favorite shape. Now, let's watch and see if you changed my mind...
An excellent video as usual. 1st) About your guitar skills. You can't really call yourself a real rock'n roll guitarist if you can't shred with your guitar behind your head while hanging upside down from the rafters. I never see the other You-tubers do this, so I would say you are as good as many of them. 2nd) I have always been curious about the Revstars, but have never played one. I wonder what the sound difference is between the lower end ones and the MIJ guitars? There is a huge price difference between the two.
Nice overview of two relatively affordable guitars. I own an Epiphone SG Special. If the Epi LP and the Revstar were available when I was shopping, I'd still go with the Epi SG. I like the looks, sound, playability, and price. The Revstar would have been my 2nd choice. The Epi LP does look nice and sounds good, but I think the Revstar is a better deal.
Choose between a Revvstar and a JoBo ? Buy an SG!! You're great man and you'll always be. A very good guitaristas but even a better human. Thanks for this channel.
Thanks Colin.. another enjoyable episode. The Gibson SG immediately sounded way better. I would have loved to have seen the Epiphone Wilshire with P90 Pros in the mix... Only because i have just bought one 😁 Wondering if its the Gibson P90s that were the difference on the SG 🤔 Tried out a RevStar in store a few months ago.. neck was very good.. very comfortable.. but decided to hold out for a Wilshire.. that eyes thing you were talking about 😂

Totally agree--it leaves you a bit deflated when you try & emulate the sounds via a small basic Amp even with additional pedals !!
True. I want a vox 30 and a 335/355...stuck with a Marshall code 50 lol
I'd love a two grand amp but my old Blues Jr will do for me especially being a bedroom player now annoying the hell out of my neighbour's

Great stuff as ever Colin. Your videos have become an essential part of my Fridays.
James Iha from the Smashing Pumpkins plays a Revstar. Just saw him playing one on the latest Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/Linda Lindas tour.
Cheers
PS, I recently discovered your channel, Colin, and it is a fabulous resource. Thanks so much for these demos.
I own a revstat p90 hot merlot its a great guitat for the money built really well 👍
The sg is nearly perfect in sound and play ability.
Life is soooo unfair!!!🤣🤣🤣
They all sound pretty good, I just wish that LP was a Gold Top.
Thanks! I'd take the SG because it's Gibson😂
I pick up a Les Paul and I'm home.
@@markfahey3921amen bro
Great show Colin, I would pick the Revstar over the Epiphone, I like the lightweight
Hahaha - Colin what a surprise! You choose the SG! 😂
So everybody has HIS guitar! The Les Paul is mine over all other designs! And so we are all happy!
Greetings from Germany!
👋😎🎸
I just love this channel, I always get about half way and have to pause and play guitar, then return later.. also every week without fail, makes me itch for a new guitar 😅
Excellent! 😆👍
Wonderful - it's all making sense now - you rock-'n'-roller. Thinking the flub was a gateway stunner
SG with P90s, absolute perfect guitar for me: simple, light, great neck, cream in the neck pickup, bite in the bridge, can do pretty much anything.
Loved this video.
great video as per, colin. always appreciate your thorough reviews and comparisons. i am not really a fan of any of the guitars in this particular vid, but really dig your production values and rad banter! i, personally, have never been swayed by, or inspired to purchase guitars played by my heroes-childhood or current! as an artist/musician, for some reason, i have to have instruments with just a certain something to set it apart from all the others-it's an annoying idiosyncratic personality quirk which i have to live with unfortunately! ;)
Unfair Colin including the SG. We all know thats your favorite!!!!!!!
Had a RevStar once. Nice guitar. Sold it because I almost never play it. Play one of my strats or SGs almost everyday. Cheers!
I solved the quandary by getting both a Revstar and a Les Paul! (humbucker versions)
Very enjoyable and informative, Colin. The Revstar is very nice and now on my list to trial. That said, the SG is sublime and next purchase.
Thanx Col, a nice comp. I would call it like this: the Yamaha is a modern sound, where as the Gibson company is more old school.
Loved this to bits. I would probably buy the Revstar now, but that's ONLY because I have already had the LP with P90s and I still think it makes me play better. Dunno why.
Yes!!!! Great video idea! I was debating between picking up a Yamaha revstar or SG as my next purchase! Thank you!!! Wonderful tones!
Cheers mate, do be careful with the stuff though it attracts black flies... 😳
@theguitaristas it also attracts a clip on the ear from Mrs bacon's handbag.
+1 for the Pacifica, great guitar. Yamaha knows how to do things right.
Colin, I always look forward to your show and very much appreciate your presentation style.
But as a spoiler alert for this episode, one only need to cast their eyes on your back wall. 😅
Great show, and thank you..!!
Check out this week’s film I spend a bit of time playing the special 😜 I definitely recommend it 👍
I've wanted a revstar since the new line came out...had to sell my electrics 😢.
Great video as always Collin!!! I think the revstar over the Les Paul, but yeah, the SG all day long....
I did your chin test on my SG. My chin lines up with the neck pickup. Could be why Les Paul is comfortable to me.
Just picked up my fourth Revstar, Bigsby model. Hard to pass a Revstar over these days.. 👍🇦🇺
I really love lots of different guitars.... Okay, I TRY to love all guitars, but I've been an SG guy since '73. Not judging, it's just the best guitar ever for me! Thanks for all you do! Love your playing.
I've been hoping for this video!!!! Thank you!
Colin, I was wathcing some launch videos for higher end Pacificas and it brought to mind something I've wondered before, How are the budget Pacifica models? I've never tried one myself. They are basically Strat copies, I think with HSS configurations. Anyway, someone said they were popular in Europe and the UK.
I got the Tenere 700 back the other day. New Clutch courtesy of Yamaha, extra capacity fuel tank so I can easily go over 200 miles per tank, hardwired GPS, Heated grips few other bits.
Tomorrow i'm taking it for a blast!
Cheers! Two week countdown for the big trip.
Cheers Pinkie, I never really fancied the Pacifica they look a bit weird to me but I'm not sure why 🤔 have a great weekend and enjoy the ride!
Absolutely adore my revstar. I just picked up a Gretsch Cvt Jack Antonoff signature. Gonna give the Revstar a run though.
Thanks to this video I went and bought an SG special…. What an awesome guitar!! The p90s roar! Thanks Colin for the inspiration 😂
Thank you!
Great show and Colin your playing is beautiful 👌👌
😁🙏
An excellent video as usual. 1st) About your guitar skills. You can't really call yourself a real rock'n roll guitarist if you can't shred with your guitar behind your head while hanging upside down from the rafters. I never see the other You-tubers do this, so I would say you are as good as many of them. 2nd) I have always been curious about the Revstars, but have never played one. I wonder what the sound difference is between the lower end ones and the MIJ guitars? There is a huge price difference between the two.
Definety the SG for me 👍🏻
Hi man, good to see you.
Only because i have just bought one 😁
Wondering if its the Gibson P90s that were the difference on the SG 🤔
Tried out a RevStar in store a few months ago.. neck was very good.. very comfortable.. but decided to hold out for a Wilshire.. that eyes thing you were talking about 😂
