I just can't wrap my mind around how a government would ALLOW something like marriage to be official without BOTH PARTIES ACTUALLY PRSENT. Wild story. I agree, something needs to be done.

When we got married in New York a decade ago we filled out the paperwork at home and then gave it to the minister the day of the ceremony to register for us. We never saw a government official until after we got our official papers and went to register with social security. I can't imagine the sorts of nonsense a minister could get up to if they were untrustworthy.

Yeah, in Korea, both bride and groom just need to fill out the marriage form and get signatures from 2 witnesses on the form, and just hand in the form to the local council/office. It's more of informing the government of what you are doing or what is happening in your life. But there is a risk of ppl forging signatures from the "bride"/"groom" and also the witnesses. I've even heard of some ppl hanging around outside the local government office in Seoul and offering themselves to be witnesses for couples who need witnesses to sign the form and charge a small fee. So basically looking for couples to ask "Do you need witnesses for your marriage form?" It could be useful for couples who don't have any family members or friends who are willing and available to sign their form or for those who came to the office and filling in the form then and there but just didn't bring any witnesses for some reason and don't wanna come back to the office again.
Anyway, I hope the law changes soon, so that both parties have to be present to legally register the marriage.

@CFAnne When we got married in Massachusetts 35 years ago, we had to both go to the county office and apply for a marriage license. Once we got it, we had to give it to our bishop. We both filled the marriage certificate out in his office the day of the wedding, then he filed it for us afterward.

Me either, but in some states in America, it is the same. I found that out when I got married, and the Judge made a joke... oh, you brought the legal one. You know you could have picked up anyone in the streets. I know it was a joke, but on that same day, I went to research it, and yep, it was true

In our country (the Czech Republic), you have to apply for a wedding date at least a month in advance and fill out all the paperwork. Both future spouses have to be present, have a lot of paperwork with them (a ID is not enough), fill out several forms, and have their signatures verified with lots of stamps and anti-forgery stickers. When they have the wedding ceremony, there is another big verification just before it to see if the person who requested the wedding is actually present. At the wedding, the signatures of the bride, groom, official, and 2 witnesses are verified. The paperwork is generally crazy and you get pretty upset about it, wondering what the hell is missing this time, but when I heard this about the situation in Korea, we can be happy for our system. As an added bonus, if one of the couple is drunk or otherwise insane, no one from the office will talk to them at all and nothing will happen.

In "Playful kiss", a Korean drama, the husband was refusing to register the marriage until the wife passed her nursing exam. One day she stole the husband's ID whilst he was sleeping and went to register the marriage only to be told that he had registered the marriage. Of course they had gotten married, but it was shocking for me to see this in the drama cause both parties should be present with witnesses....woow

It is possible to get wed in China without the house hold register, one can then later apply. It is however much more difficult to move from one provinces to another without one. Even though it is shown in Cdramas that you need it to marry , that is not entirely true.

In the 1990's he wants to remarried but he is still married to the woman. They had to publish it in the newspaper a few times looking for her. Then, they wait and file the divorce papers. They then, had to publish the divorce in the newpapers. Took some time but he was granted a divorce without ever being found.

    • @vlsice2024
      @vlsice2024 3 дня назад +2

That actually sounds better solution of trying to find the other person and hoping and pray they don’t read the newspaper so that you can allow the time to laugh and actually legally get divorced or at least get the marriage a note because you know it’s something ever considerable differences or you know just being you know, having a time lapse And then have a in this present of evidence that you made reasonable arrangements to find the other party because in the earlier comment previous it sounds predatory on that woman’s part because she waited until he was too drunk to say no, and then stole his wallet and ID just call what it is. She stole it and reasonably I would think since she’s been actually putting stuff in his name probably because that’s probably a reason she actually got the loan from the bank because they had to look at boat because Santa tells me she knew she’s not gonna be able to get anything in her name alone so it was just a double security for her that if she defaulted for any reason they have somebody else to go after and she can either disappear or or just basically keep her mouth shut and basically let him pay it without them trying to find her it’s either that or she got her loan from a shady place and that’s the reason they allowed her to basically sign for a loan in his name or as a co-applicant and if she defaulted all they have to do is probably find him to get the money and there’s a good chance that just to get out of the shady loan, he would’ve paid for it and then try to come after her and then there’s a good chance of the court would not granted him anything compensation because he’s legal white and he should’ve known and being that she worked at the same café. They’ve been frequently for years and she knew he had gotten with another woman or a woman and knocked out this woman she was having a relationship with and didn’t say anything and then when he was finally ready to move on then she spoke up because she knew she had him dead to right basically of him having an extra marital affair, even though he didn’t know he was actually married because you can tell they don’t really take it seriously because they really don’t wanna warn the public. that’s the reason there’s a piece of paper in probably on the door, but how many people really actually go to the door and actually read itin a morally ambiguous society that’s basically doesn’t see any wrong and parents dictating their children’s lives even down to who they marry

And no "representatives" are allowed, either; it has to be the actual spouses. And there needs to be two witnesses at the ceremony. Different states have different laws, as allowed by the constitution, but that's how we do things in New York State.....

    How is that even possible?
Definitely, in S Korea, they have major problems in terms of certifying someone's identity.
Almost anywhere around the world, you have to show up with your ID and sign with your own hand any important documents. Where I live for marriage, couples go to the registrar, and they have to bring a number of "witnesses" with them (family or friends). There is a small ceremony where you are asked if you agree with the marriage and sign the marriage certificate in front of the officer and your witnesses. This is done prior to the religious ceremony (if the couple chooses to have one). Even the priest will not do the ceremony without the proof of an official marriage certificate. And the wedding party is usually done after all these are completed.

A friend of mine got wedded by proxy to a guy in Nigeria who wanted her. She hated him but he forced his sister to sign as proxy. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't extricate herself. She finally got divorced after about sixteen years but she never told her sons about how she ended up with their father.

The US process is pretty reasonable. Before getting married, you have to get a marriage license where one of party’s lives. Both parties have to be present and provide their own photo IDs and birth certificates, as well as any final judgements of divorce in the event of prior marriages. Depending on the state, there might be a short wait before you can actually marry (i.e., 24 hrs). The license is also only valid for a limited period of time (i.e. 60 days). Following the wedding ceremony, a marriage certificate is completed by the officiant and signed by the officiant, the married couple and witnesses. The officiant is responsible for filing it with the proper authorities.

That reminds me of those stories where they can divorce a person with just a paper, so the person doesn't have to be there at all.

Korea is crazy - how can someone register a marriage without their partner there? Marriage is not a joke so no one should fill out marriage papers unless they are in the government office ready to register it.

In U.S. the couple goes to get the license. No witness, does the ceremony and has the officiant and 2 witnesses and themselves sign it and mail it back.

You know, I always thought it was weird when I saw Playful Kiss some years ago and the girl and MIL when to go and register the marriage w/o MIL's son's consent and I'm like, "wait, don't they need him there too?" Only to find out, he registered their marriage already. (It was suppose to be a romantic thing, but i was just even more confused)

Oh wow they really do need to fix that. You should not be able to marry someone without their consent. It is a crazy coincidence that they started going to her cafe though. I wonder if that part of her story was true.

This is insane. In Trinidad 🇹🇹 you have the post bands first after the engagement. Its a way for the register office to do background checks to prove that the couple is eligible to get married. The bands have to be posted for six months before the wedding can even take place. Also the only people allowed to officate the ceremony are a JP, Priest, Pundit and Imam. Your friend cannot do a five minute course and print out a license. Also, in case of the priest, he has to be an ordained minister with an established denominational Christian body for at least 10 years before he can he apply to have a marriage license. The officiating minister is the one who takes the paperwork back to the register office because their are document waiting there for him to sign. Once everything is done according to the law, only then is marriage certificate issued
