- The Coustillier is one of the unique units of the Burgundians in Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition - Lords of the West. It is a Cavalry unit that can charge its attack to +35 increased damage by moving, discharging its extra damage on its first attack against a unit (not buildings). This bonus damage is increased to 44 in the elite version.

Low HP units like Halbs die in an instant.
High Quality Units like Leitis and Boyars win in equal numbers but loose in equal res because they cost alot more.
And this doesnt even consider hit and run tactics.
Seems balanced.
For this demonstration, I think it would have been best to have equal cost armies on both side and not equal number of units. Some units are good because they are cost effective.
plus the whole key of the Coustillier is that they excel in scenarios of equal or superior numbers since their charge is just about their everything and they are not very impressive a unit after the initial hit.
@@ProfNekko in fact these kind of simulations are not "that" useful, e.g. genoese crossbowmen would have wiped out coustillers with just some infantry units to absorb the initial hit
@@gabrielefarina9517 and genoese crossbow would get rekted if the coustelliers also have infantry to keep the enemy infantry busy while they flank and kill the crossbows. Your point?

it's kinda why this idea was scrapped way back in 97.
Coustellier is added to the game to further glorify Teutonic Knights.

The fight against Leitis are very interesting. A one-time charge unit vs a always charge unit
Leitis aren't necessarily broken, you just have to take out their monasteries... And Pikes don't have too much armor to negate anyway

When ppl see this, they dont realize that if you micro the unit (charge attack > kite 15 sec > charge attack) its even more busted. Can destroy teutonic knights easily too.
But realistically the AI isn’t smart enough for such abuse. Only human players can be so devious.

in reality you'd have a whole slew of pikemen between the coustilliers and your ranged units.
People are reporting the cooldown is more like +40 seconds, so 15 seconds is really off.
Looked shorter in Heras video. Then again instant killing all the villagers in a raid shouldnt be.
Elephant archers finally make sense
The elephant archers deserved to lose though, they are the worst unit for cost in the game.

It seems that they have a bug that let their charge deal double the damage to cav archer type unit. That's why their charge one shots mangudai. But they still can't kill ele archers 11

Still I think theres a chance. Massed scorpions, mass halbs and archer spam may have a chance

Everytine I see an archer unit used in this fight I cringe.
Especially Mangudai and Kipchaks. Like; no one leaves them standing still in a fight against a melee unit.

They should cost more. 40 seconds cooldown on charge is reasonable, but the cost is way too low. Something like 70 food and 75 gold would make more sense. It's still heavy cavalry.

@@ahstinfixsnhc9765 thats exactly the reason it should only work on infantry and archers, it will mean you have to make cavalry (or cav archers) of your own to counter it, rather than braindead halbs. It makes it an interesting unit as opposed to an expensive anti cavalry alternative.

Place cheap trash units in the front to make them waste the power charge, then counter with halbediers

I don't think they should remove that because it is what makes this troop unique I suggested a few months ago to add this ability to lancers coz it makes for various tactics and this unit is not so op paladins and leitis can spank it hard so can every heavy cavalry plus you can just lure them to charge and kill useless units and bring halbs or counters to kill them because after charge they have mediocre stats but I loved the concept
I don't think anyone is saying remove it, just nerf it so it's not so strong

were cataphrekts missing from video? Anyway cost of that unit is way too low for its power. Only unit of similar cost that won vs them were leitis and teutonic knights, while Leitis won barerly and are worse vs archers and TKs could be hit by them and after retreat to hit 40 seconds later again....Also how to strategize against them lol. Build Rams to take charged attack? 55 food + 55 gold makes it really hard to build against them, like if gold is on map the only counter to those I think are 4 relic leitis or 4 relic lithuanian paladins or Teuton paladins.

Now let's compare the cost of Coustillier with other units that aren't defeated by them in video, like Boyar costs 25 more gold per unit than Coustillier so to create 10 of them you will need 250 more gold. With that extra 250 gold, you can make 5 more Coustillier, even though they requires more food as well but farming is easier than collecting gold.
Also, Burgundians have a vineyard bonus so their farmers can generate gold and their relics generate food at the same speed as gold. Considering all these facts Coustillier can easily win against all unique units.

Camels and elephants did so well against the OP pointy Bois.
They are a true 'hit-and-run' unit. Hit the enemy hard when fully charged, then retreat to heal and reload.
The charge takes actually quite a long time, you're better of finishing them off right on the spot rather than letting them a chance to replenish their numbers.
@@theowlogram888 use other units to finish them off. Never perform an attack with only coustilliers.

@@DommHavai if you can't even afford handcannons, you're done anyway. If you can't afford handcannons, you definitely can't afford siege.

Halbs backed by archers to kill any that try to cycle charge could be a good approach.

If this comparison is to provide any value, it needs to compare units by the cost of resources. Doing a straight 15 units versus 15 units is pointless.

The charge damage seems to ignore melee armor
Nope a teutonic knight got hit by two first hits and lived. If it pierced armor the knight would be dead

Monk rush is your friend. If they get converted the cous is going eat their own charge and meso civs have the requisite monk techs for it
@@MrAsaqe monks (and their upgrades) cost a ton of gold, and are easily killed by trash units like the hussar...
@@matthiasvandekerkhove3594 exactly, the meso civs really have no viable way to combat mass cous if they let it get that far; they NEED to the end the game early in order to win because you will not have the pop space to fight mass cous, you’ll need at least 70-100 pikes as Aztecs just to kill 40-50 of them. So you’ll want to end the game with the monk rush if you do it.
