Thank you for demonstrating, I have a combination machine that I love I recently purchased a babylock Aerial because I do a little bit of everything-embroidery, sewing, quilting etc.. as my hobbies. One benefit is that is makes me finish a project before starting another. If sewing was my full time job, I will definitely have a machine for each of these functions . I also have an older brother sewing and an old serger.
Finishing one project before starting another is a benefit for sure, but I like to do a lot of batch sewing and one machine would make that a little harder.
Thank you, this is very helpful. I have a Pfaf overlock machine (got it from a 90yr old woman on FB marketplace) but haven't used it yet as I need to set up a space. I don't have a good regular sewing machine though (yet). The coverstitch with single needle looks like how they used to sew pet food bags at the top. Pull loose one thread and the binding piece comes off to open the bag.
This video was so timely and right to point and super relevant to what I'm researching this week. I knew a little about capabilites of a sewing machine but sergers I never really knew what they were good for. Sergers were a mystery to me. Lol. So thank you for this perfect video! Now I see I want to get one! I had a sewing machine before and gave it away about 10 yrs ago. :(( What do you know? Im itching to sew again! I'm craving to start sewing my own cozy jersey knit long sleeve tops and filling up my wardrobe and make some Reglan shirts too. Super soft and comfy. So.....❤ Next machine I definitely plan to keep forever. I most likely will eventually have to buy another sewing machine for cotton type projects and a serger for my stretch projects. Serger I will probably get first bc I'm in love with jersey fabrics. I've a ton of tops I want to sew. Yet I don't see me buying an embroidery or combo machines. So thank you for explaining those as well. Great video that will help me with my first purchase to get back in the game of sewing. I ❤ to sew! 🧵🧵
Glad it was helpful - but a note - even if you're only sewing stretch fabrics, you'll want a regular sewing machine that can do a zig-zag stitch before a serger. There are very few patterns- even those designed for knits - that can be completed entirely on a serger. You can construct entire knit tops on a regular sewing machine with a zig-zag stitch, but there are some things a serger cannot do - like hem.
@@Mellysews Oh. Thank you for pointing that out. Still technically a newbie. Several years ago to my surprise I successfully made a rod pocket curtain set. And a pillow case and several pillows. Those were fun. So my next first project will be to purchase some strech jersey fabrics and make some Reglans for my wardrobe for weekend wear. Busy 9-5 Mom and I really need more comfy tops. I never ever thought I might be able to tackle and sew my own jersey tops but now watching several raglan utube how to videos, I'm gonna try. Why not! Lol. So If I only could purchase one machine for my raglan tops project. Which would you recommend? Let me know what you think. Regular sewing machine or serger? Thank you in advance.
I do agree with you about buying separate machines. I love The Brother sewing machines. I have four machines, and a Serger as I love making my own clothes etc... I am wanting an embroidery machine that does Monograms too. I do have The project runway that does limited monograms but I want more lol.
Thanks for the info Madam. I feel like I have become adult. I don't know a thing about sewing and was trying to find a machine to gift to my relative. Beneficial content.
Thank you for the demonstration of different sewing machines. I love all my machines! 😊 My oldest machine, a sewing machine, is already 27 years old and my recent one, a blind hem machine for several weeks now. Which I am very happy with. Only one bobbin needed and no bobbin thread at the bottom. The thread can be changed in an instant and can be used on almost all types of fabrics. Very thin fabrics are a bit more difficult. The overlock is also a machine that I could not do without. If I had to give up one, it would be the coverlock machine, with a twin needle you can certainly get this stitch on most sewing machines. Is it useful to have these separately, certainly. As Melissa said, it's handy that you can just sit behind your machine without having to do too many actions. Greetings and thank you very much! ☺
A blind stitch machine is not one I've been able to spend much time with but I think they're interesting! If I had a huge sewing shop I'd also like a leather machine.
Thank you so much for all your videos!! They have helped me tremendously along my sewing journey. I also love that you did this video!! I have the same embroidery machine as you. I’ve probably had it for 3 years now and I’m extremely intimidated by it. I have only “attempted” to use it a handful of times. I was wondering if you had any videos (I couldn’t find any) or could suggest any videos that you think may be helpful in learning how to use the machine? I also just bought a serger as well, so any suggestions for videos learning that would be awesome to!! I’m not to nervous about the serger believe it or not, but I’m always looking to learn as much as possible. I am a very visual learner. That sounds weird but I’m not sure how else to phrase it!! Any info on these subjects you can share would be so awesome!! Again I really really appreciate all your videos!! For someone like me it’s the only way I can learn aside from going to classes but I unfortunately can’t afford those. Take care ❤️❤️❤️
@@Mellysews thanks so much! I love this advice because I’m clearly doing something right 🤣 I keep my manuals with all my machines so I can reference any info I need for when trying something new and to refresh myself on something I may not have done in awhile! Thanks again! Happy holidays!
I'm a beginner and the only available machine I found in my area and amazon.ca are the Singer M3500, Singer M2100, Singer 5560, Singer 5400, Singer 8520, Brother JX1420, and Brother SQ 9130. I don't know which one to get, I just want something that is cheap, but will last long and not break easily. Advice pls. thank you
all my machine reviews are in the blog post linked in the video description, but you won’t find thoughts on that model because I have never sewn on one.

Woah that embroidery machine is so freaking cool!!!
It's kind of magical, isn't it?

Hi Melly. Thank you for going over the cover-stitch machine, never quite understood the difference between it and the serger.
Yes - they look so similar it can be confusing until you see them in action.
I just got a used Brother PE-770 embroidery machine. Love it!!
That is awesome!
Thanks for giving a run Down of the different types of machine...very useful info for a newbie
Glad it was helpful!

Yes, I find it much easier to move my chair than convert a machine to another use.

When in doubt, I sit down with the manual and try each feature as I read about it. That way you can translate the text to visual, hands-on experience.

@@Mellysews ok
Great machines
Thanks!
What machine is good for sewing / embroidery labels / patches on baseball caps?
I don't have a recommendation for that, cap embroidery is generally done on an industrial machine, not a home one.
Pls what the name of the product of the regular machine ..with zigzard and the rest stitch on it..
All my machine names/opinions are in the post linked in the video description

If the machine you ordered is embroidery only, then no, it will no be able to sew clothing.
