Totally deserved, total legends and one of the best live bands I have ever seen. Just been looking at PO site - tempted by a couple of the collector's offerings.
As much as Bruce sounds great here, his studio album version is brilliant. I think it's the most highly polished album production wise they have ever released. Somewhere In Time is criminally overlooked.
I believe this album is overrated, but only in how people _perceive_ it as underrated Even 7Soa7S has a LOT more appreciation than people seem to realize Those 2 albums may not have been fan favorites for the fanbase prior to those albums, but in the entire span of years, they got a lot more appreciation
Somewhere in Time is generally considered their best album. You’re right. About 90% of serious fans/media should recognize it as their best album instead of the 20 or 30% who do now. Even at 20 or 30 percent favorite its still up there at the top if not at the top compared to other albums.
You were 100% right about the last song. They’ve chosen that tune to end the entire set as that was the very first tour after Bruce’s recovery from throat cancer. Whole maiden world stopped during his treatment in 2015 but in 2016 they embarked the new tour with Wasted years as a closer ❤
Actually, Doug, the message we all leave the show with is "Always Look On The Bright Side of Life". 😄 You go home, your ears are buzzing and ringing a bit, youŕe hungry and thirsty, and you're singing that tune on the way out. We've all done it. Every Maiden fan who has been to a show knows what I'm talking about. That's THE buzz. THE feeling. THE message. "Always Look On The Bright Side of Life" 🤘 Up The Irons! 🤘
Wasted Years was written by Adrian Smith. As was the other single released off the Somewhere In Time LP: the mighty Stranger In A Strange Land. This was Adrian’s golden period with amazing solos, lyrics and songwriting. He could do zero wrong during that period.
Tragic shame Maiden sacked Adrian Smith after Seventh Son. After Seventh Son and Adrian Smith being sacked, they wrote No Prayer for the Dying, which is the worst album Maiden have ever made.
Somewhere In Time is Adrian's album. I've always thought that way, he was so prolific at the time and I know he enjoyed the direction they were going in, hence why he left when he realised No Prayer was gonna be this back to basics thing. Fair play to him, we shouldn't pick favourites but I think he's mine of the three guitarists 😄
I was a sophomore in high school when this album came out. The artwork on the vinyl cover blew my mind, as did the music. All these years later, it still stands on it's own. Thanks, and Happy New Year!
I love that you went from "would I pay to see them? Probably not" to being sad you missed out on this tour. Saw them back in November and, as always, they never disappoint.
I love this song, great lyrics and makes a real point. This is the first time I've seen this live and its great to see the band still clearly enjoying playing together after all these years.
@@metalmike570 There wasn't really a break for Iron Maiden. They continued recording and touring with new singer Blaze. Lower sales volumes and smaller venues, at least in the United States, but they carried on without Bruce. However, without Bruce and Adrian's return in 1999 they probably would not be active today.
Really fun and wholesome to see how much you're enjoying yourself while listening to IM and metal while we all remember the "humble" beginnings of yours when this whole thing was new to your ears. You are a really great guy and come down as a generally good human being with whom most of us would love to drink a beer/wine, go fishing or just listen to some music and hear your analysis live. Keep pushin'!
They released another similarly-subjected tune called "Coming Home" from The Final Frontier record. It evoked the same kind of feels for me, but "Wasted Years" will always remain my favorite song.
Thank you for your Iron Maiden reactions. I've been a fan of the band for a very long time, and I find your thoughts and analysis of the songs very interesting. Keep them coming!
I’m not a Rock Star but I can definitely relate to this song. I’ve deployed several times to Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Horn of Africa(about 45 months altogether). I would listen to this and Bob Seger’s “Turn the Page” to help wind down after a long patrol.
Thank you for your service! I'm friends with a Devil Dog tanker, then helo pilot for both gulf wars. Another Marine tanker & a grunt who was in the worst of Faluja. My daughter is a Marine vet. She never deployed but she was meritoriously chosen to participate in the ceremony at Iwo Jima. Big deal for Marines.
The Flight 666 version would’ve been the better live version of this. Speaking of live versions, Adrian performed this song himself last year while touring his side project, Smith/Koetzen, with Richie Koetzen. I may have said this previously, but Adrian has a really nice voice and I would recommend giving him a listen, whether it be Smith/Koetzen, or even the B-side track to the Wasted Years single, Reach Out, which has Adrian on lead vocals and Bruce on backing vocals. I would also recommend Stranger In A Strange Land, off of Somewhere In Time, and also penned by Adrian… his guitar solo on that is probably the best one he’s ever composed.
100% the band was still at a relative peak of performance stage. You can hear some age and labour in Bruce's voice here and the vocal balance with Adrian is not great.
You really need to see Maiden LIVE!!!! The next time they are touring the USA, go! Go to wherever they are closest to you. It is a life changing experience. You don't want to look back on the 'Wasted Years' wondering why you missed the opportunity to go to one of their shows. Please Doug, you have to do it! Up The Irons 🤘🏻🇬🇧🖤
A MAIDEN show isn''t just a concert it is an event. I have seen them many times, every tour in the US since 1984. They always deliver and the fans are always great!!!! Check them out in 2024 you won't be disappointed.
Iron Maiden live never disappoints. I'm so glad I got to see them on that tour. Bruce voice was as strong as ever, and the band was as incredible as expected.
They never fail to deliver. The sad fact is there will be a time in the not to distant future that Iron Maiden will be no more....😔 Great reaction and breakdown as usual Doug! Happy New Year! 🤘
This makes me really happy seeing this. It reminds me of when I first saw them play this track in 86. Hammersmith in London with mates and not a care in the world. All those years later and they still play it. Awesome. Can't wait till the summer and seeing them again!!
This is the song that changed it all for me with iron maiden. I listened to them a bit but 9nly the usual. Then I saw a cover band play this. I guess I just listened to it a little differently. The sounds made me em9tional. I went not even remembering the name of the song but I dug until I found it. It opened up a whole new world and massive catalogue of music that still gets me crying my eyes out every day it's good. Steve is a genius in my eyes. They get my heart racing every day. I often wonder how many other people have that kind of emotional connection and get to experience it like that. It's Adrian man. The sounds he makes and his note choices turn me into a jabbering mess haha
I'll never forget the first time I heard this song, as a teen in Target watching videos on TVs in their electronics department. I remember loving the song, and wanting to buy the cassette immediately, as soon as I learned who it was and what cassette it was off. But I also remember being blown away that "Iron Maiden is a band" - at that point, I only knew of the t-shirts, posters, and merchandise! Great discovery, and start of being a fan for so many years by simply that TV demo setup at Target years ago. Thanks for a great reaction as always!
Great choice to kick off 2023 Doug. I love listening to, and playing this song on my guitar. The lyrics really hit home and made me think about my own life as 'tempus fugit' as they say! Don't waste time Doug; get along and see Iron Maiden if and when you can, you will enjoy the show.
Thank you for choosing this as the starting song for 2023, Doug! To me the best Maiden song, part of the soundtrack of my life and my personal hymn for the past two and a half years... REALIZE YOU'RE LIVING IN THE GOLDEN YEARS!! UP THE IRONS!!
Doug you must go to an Iron Maiden concert and feel the real atmosphere, if you enjoy their music at home, imagine doing the same watching them! It's really hard to describe and so emotional
Just saw them in Oct in Chicago. Still amazing, Bruce still sounds amazing. There are no words to describe an Iron Maiden live experience you just have to go.
Upvote! I think this is my favorite Maiden album because it was my first intro to the band back in the 80's. However, it's just very well-produced. The album cover art alone is worth the price. Every so often I throw it on the turntable and let it blow me away again. I have two vinyl copies, a CD version, and of course I ripped it so I can carry it on my phone's music library. I even have a t-shirt of android Eddie in that pose from the cover. I just love that era of the band.
If you get the chance, search and check out the video " Iron Maiden wasted years (from flight 666) " . Best live version of that song, Starts out with Bruce piloting their tour airliner "ED FORCE ONE" over the Mexico mountains into Monterrey for a show. It is a cut from their Documentary "Flight 666" that covered their world tour when Bruce flew them around the world on their plane during the tour! Sang every night and flew the Damn Plane!
Watching this video together and getting the background info to the song 35 years after I've heard it for the first time makes this extremely enjoyable. Thank you!
First time I saw Iron Maiden was on this tour. Somewhere On Tour. Milwaukee, WI, Mecca Arena. Sunday March 8th. I've now seen them 9 times and got backstage twice!
In 2016 I saw them at Donington. They were closing it on Sunday. It was 3 days of torrential rain, deep mud everywhere, rain during their show. Best time of my life. Anyone interested, worth checking Download Festival 2016 videos. UK, not France - that year there was Download festival in France as well. Rammstein on Friday, Black Sabbath on Saturday and Iron Maiden on Sunday. Heaven. 🤣 Very wet heaven
I started with your first Iron Maiden reaction and it is awesome to see a man of your pedigree enjoying their music. It's a testament to quality. Thank you Doug and have a golden 2023. A very happy Iron Maiden fan from Croatia, EU.
03:03 EVERYONE is cool enough to go to an Iron Maiden show, because we're all Blood Brothers!!! Hope you get a chance to experience one live, one day. It's such an amazing experience!!!
This video was recorded in Rio and I was there for an incredible journey in this amazing concert. You mentioned something about 2023 possibly being a golden year. Well, Sir, unfortunately not for us here in Brazil. I enjoy your videos very much. Congratulations on your fine work.
Doug I hope you get to see them on the Future/Past tour this year. They are fantastic live and Wasted Years has become their show closer every night for the last two tours.
This was one of two singles from Somewhere in Time, both composed by Adrian Smith, Smith had co-written the singles Flight of Icarus and Two Minutes to Midnight prior to Wasted Years. Adrian's solo stuff from 1989's ASAP to the recent Smith/Kotzen album is great, solid rock music.
Im excited that they are out on tour again, living in Japan now and the newest album being Senjutsu, should be great to see show #32 and beyond for me.
You should listen to the original track and it’s b-side Reach Out. Powerful vocals by Bruce in during some of his absolute best years! (And that is saying a lot!)
I remember reading in a guitar magazine that between 81-88 that they toured on an average of 9 months a year, recorded 2 months and were off a total of 1 month a year. This song addresses that life they lived and now still DO tour a bunch in their 60s
Adrian Smith has a great voice, too. His solo stuff like A.S.A.P he wrote and sung himself is really great stuff just like the Silver and Gold album, which is great and very underrated. A very talented person and musician;-) Up the mighty Irons!!!!
2020, 2021 - Wasted Years - Realize you're living in the COVID years 2:59 - You done messed up, A-Aron! 3:08 - That fact that you said that shows that you are. You're, at least, humble enough. 4:41 - That had me laughing out loud. 7:05 - Yes. Adrian sings, and he has a really good voice. Check out Smith/Kotzen.
I saw them back in the fall and Bruce sounded better than he had in years. Don't know if his voice needed a lot of time to come back from his cancer treatment or if we just caught him on a good night, but he sounded every bit as good as the mid 2000s.
I was lucky enough to be on the rail for the tour last year. It blew my mind! There is a reason these guys are one of the premier acts in metal. Doug, you are def cool enough to be at a Maiden show
This is one of the very few Maiden songs Not written by Steve. It's all Adrian's. But it is not only one of the best lyrically, it has one of the best solos.
Great song, and perfect timing too! Seen them for the first time in Toronto on their recent tour. Was absolutely worth it. Was a few rows back from the stage and ended up getting one of Dave Murray's picks that he tossed out to the crowd. Doug definitely don't skip out on a show if you have another chance!
The first Iron Maiden album I listened to was "Live after Death" which my big brother brought home around 2003, 2004 and I've been an iron Maiden fan ever since
My cohort's most favorite album of all time by this band, the tone, mixing and feel - it doesn't discount any other album, singer just feel caught in time with this album still. Good vid Doug
I think it's their most commercial track - like an FM radio cut; it seems to be an easy tune for them. Cause it's not a progressive song they have a lot of them.
You NEED to see them live. I can assure you these guys are one of the best live bands I've ever seen. Absolute monsters of the stage, even as older fellas. Bruce has so much energy, and stage craft. The guy will change full costumes between each song , and I swear to god theres no breaks between songs. He's just got it down to an artform. And it should say something that often the recordings of their live shows are often considered *better* than their recorded efforts, despite the fact the studio albums usually being excellent (Their "Live After Death" album is imho in the top 5 metal albums of all time). They are just that good live.
Just announced today in the UK is a set of Iron Maiden postage stamps.
Totally deserved, total legends and one of the best live bands I have ever seen. Just been looking at PO site - tempted by a couple of the collector's offerings.
I haven’t collected stamps since I was 12 years old but I might have to look into these!
I just ordered some 😊
Ordered my copies
Got mine 😉 They’re great.

The B-side "Reach Out" with Adrian singing and Bruce doing back-up vocals is also interesting.
Not just Reach Out, but also The Sheriff of Huddersfield, aka Rod Smallwallet.
Sherrif of Huddersfield is class, but it's not H on vocals?
I think that Ozzy could sing this one!!
One of my favorite maiden songs. Even though it's more of an 80's hair metal style song, it's a banger!!
Killer song
Actually, Doug, the message we all leave the show with is "Always Look On The Bright Side of Life". 😄
You go home, your ears are buzzing and ringing a bit, youŕe hungry and thirsty, and you're singing that tune on the way out.
We've all done it. Every Maiden fan who has been to a show knows what I'm talking about.

That must be why I like to hear Wasted Years and Stranger consecutively.
@70 AD Adrian was not sacked. Don't come on here and spread lies to people. You obviously don't know anything about what happened
Only Iron Maiden can write 100 songs with really the same harmony, where every one feels unique
So funny how Bruce kept pulling the mic away from Adrian during this performance 😂😂😂 These guys have so much fun doing what they do, it’s great!
Who is gonna tell Doug that all Maiden concerts end the same way?
"Always look on the bright side of life"
lol
They also start the same way with ufo doctor doctor before the intro tape starts
@@willmore01 I love how we all sing Doctor Doctor as well. The minute that song starts we know we are mere moments away!!
Wasted Years is an absolute BANGER of a song! Adrian’s solo is just astonishing.
It sure is a great toon!

I recommend the opening track of the album, for your next Iron Maiden reaction. You would love it. Great video as always .
ABSOFUCKINGLUTELY!!!
It amazes me how these guys have dedicated their whole lives touring nearly all year every year for like 50 years

I was lucky enough to be on the rail for the tour last year. It blew my mind! There is a reason these guys are one of the premier acts in metal. Doug, you are def cool enough to be at a Maiden show
Always such good energy from this channel. Doug, everyone is welcome at a metal show. Just avoid the pit.
The bass is perfection.
This is one of the very few Maiden songs Not written by Steve. It's all Adrian's. But it is not only one of the best lyrically, it has one of the best solos.
Happy new year Doug...all the best!
I love to watch became Metal Heads. Mr. Doug it was fun to headbanging with You. 🤘🔥💪
Perfect song to start off a new year...........
The first tour I ever went to was Somewhere on tour Iron Maiden 1987, and have been a fan ever since.
I saw them live in Cape Town on this tour. Was fantastic!
I love your videos, Doug. Please keep 'em coming.
Its about frickin time you did more Maiden! Lol 😆
I bet you're the coolest music teacher ever.
Maiden are the best show I've ever seen. I blew my voice out singing along.
so true - golden year!
Doug this coming tour would be a great one to check out. This album will be featured heavily. Haha “Heavily”
Nice, as always. Glad you're listening to my faves too!
Bought the 7" in '86, still love it to this day and play it on guitar regularly.
The first Iron Maiden album I listened to was "Live after Death" which my big brother brought home around 2003, 2004 and I've been an iron Maiden fan ever since
Iron Maiden made you Doug, don’t forget that.
Keep up the good work!
Every year is a golden year! Live hard!
My cohort's most favorite album of all time by this band, the tone, mixing and feel - it doesn't discount any other album, singer just feel caught in time with this album still.
Good vid Doug
Bombastic Best!!! Up the IRONS!!!
Iron Maiden is a golden band for me, they always nail it!
My favourite Iron Maiden track of all time!!!!!!
I think it's their most commercial track - like an FM radio cut; it seems to be an easy tune for them. Cause it's not a progressive song they have a lot of them.
Excellent job on the air drums 😃
You really would love Iron Maiden- For the Greater Good of God (studio version). Either that or the talisman live at en vivo!
I saw them on that tour in Detroit. It was an amazing show, and they ended their 3 song encore with that song. It was awesome!
One of the top 20 Maiden songs. A gem
love to hear about you experiancing this: Fair To Midland - Dance Of The Manatee
My favorite Maiden song.
