I’m 73. Saw them live in the 60’s as a “opening act” with Herb Alpert. Never saw anything to top that evening. That sound. The understated power of their music has no equal. Check out any of their other music. You will be amazed. Chrystal Illusions.

Aside from the sultry voices, let's give huge credit to Sergio Mendes for being such a tremendous arranger. He puts his own unique touch on iconic songs that are already familiar to millions. Big changes, too. Very brave to even make such an attempt yet he does it again and again. Changed the whole time signatures of both Fool On The Hill and Scarborough Fair. Brilliant stuff. It would be an insult to call any of these efforts 'covers'. Over 50 years later and these songs stand the test of time like few others.

Lani Hall...Ay caramba! I was fortunate to grow up with this music in our household. This era and this music is what I listen most today. Sergio Mendes,Herb Alpert, Burt Bacharach,Stan Getz, Vince Guaraldi...as 10 year old I loved Bossa Nova and all kinds of Jazz. In my teens there was nothing sexier than a female Jazz singer...reckon i still feel the same. None of my friends liked this music they thought I was weird for liking it.

    • @Pacific_maps
      @Pacific_maps 7 лет назад +4

This was the studio version, and Lani Hall did sing 100% of the vocals. They did some studio work and double tracked her vocals so it sounds like there are two people singing, but it's really just two tracks of Lani. Sorry to ruin the myth! I'm sure Janis was a good singer, and she probably kicked butt in concerts when they did need both voices live.

In the US was this also played on radio stations. So great to see them singing this live! I like live performances and so great just five of them create such beautiful songs! I like their unique vocalizations too, like they do in Jazz, and also the Bossa Nova, Samba, kind of beats. Brazil and south America has contributed such unique music to the world!

Along with Herb Alpert and Burt Bacharach, your brilliance makes up what I like to refer to as the 60s 'musical TRIFECTA.' Oh how we need your smooth, sophisticated, bosa-nova interpretations of catchy melodies more NOW than ever -- particularly when acknowledging the cultural wasteland in which we presently find ourselves.
And one more thing: SO WISH dresses were STILL that short.

I've loved Sergio Mendes and his groups ever since I was in high school, 1967ish. Not sure how I got into them but I sure did. I went to college the next year and they appeared on a program there. And then, later that I was sent to Brasil as a mormon missionary and there was lots of Bossa Nova and Samba to listen. I heard them lots of times, as recently as about 2015 when they appeared in a casino in Las Vegas where I lived then. I'm 72 years old and pretty soon have to hear them again.

Yes, a 'live' performance with not a single mic in sight and none of the instruments plugged in! Simply magical! lol

@@bobjohnson205 Good point Bob, but I think the girls were covered by some boom mics. If you listen carefully to the acoustics of the performance, there is a lot of echo suggesting that they are not close mic'ed. Its certainly not a studio recording .

These two girls were very pretty and sang very well too. It is hard to love someone who ignores us and we try to find a way into that special peron's heart. Sometimes we succeed others we don't.

HAVE to agree with 'saintquinn' below!! Yes indeed ... gorgeous & unique voices!!! I too think that Sergio - in some way - surely DID luck out with finding such wondrous ladies with their amazing vocals! Perhaps this was his vision from the start. When u were 2 hey 007?!!! Wow! That's pretty fab that when u were 2 it hit u that way. I was around 8 or so when I first heard "Pretty World" on an AM radio in the neighborhood. I was hooked !!!! Indeed these ladies, especially in harmony, have a unique & fabulous sound !!! One way I would describe it is something like this: Sorry, but almost no matter who u are as a female singer, u may have to step aside & let these pros & grown-ups take over!! Can't help but LOVE them!!!!!

I was a kid then too and similar happened to me Sergio etc. Herb Alpert, Burt Bacharach hit some chord with me. I think though that Sergio is very on top of his craft and he really knew what he was doing when he selected those fine vocalists and such beautiful ladies too! I like their unique Brazilian interpretation of music too!

    To Robert Klimek
I discovered the fisrt edition of Brasil'66 and was immediatly struck by the tremendous vocal harmonies by Janis and Lani, and the exciting rhythm of the outstanding backing
group, who could hamonize on the occasion( Jose Soares on percussion, Bob Matthews on bass, Joao Palma on drums)
Though I don't quite agree with you about the sharing between Janis and Lani on vocals,
I must admit that you statement about the drummer fills me with joy!!
The late Joao Palma was a pillar of the "sound of Brasil'66", on the first three LP; his outstanding style was really a trademark of the group if you listen carefully.
His work can be appreciated on Tom Jobim and Walter Wanderley LPs for CTI label.
There is a video where you can enjoy the whole group on Vimeo(Sergio Mendes & Brasil'66 in the Lloyd Thaxton show); they play 3 titles!! Don't miss it.
