Indeed. Walked along the canal at Rickmansworth in 1981. Took me till 2018 to explore more - Limehouse, Camden end of the city. After seeing these, I'll be back soon to cycle and walk from East to West just as we've been shown here. Brilliant!
Highly recomend spending time around the lee valley and hackney/walthamstow marshes too. Theyre continuation of the canal and then up towards the reservoirs in Blackhorse road area. I lived around there and explored alot circa 2004, in the last few years since ive not been to London Im told there are bars and breweries up walthamstow way (not hackney wick that started gentrifying and getting cool circa 2010) @@mozdickson

I never thought much about canals but this series make me appreciate it much much more. The history is really interesting and I'd love to walk some length of the canal when I go to London. I definitely want to go to that book store and Chinese restaurant also on a little canal boat ride.
Few weeks ago I was in London during the weekend (the foggy weekend, yes...). I stayed in a hotel near Kings Cross. On the Saturday morning I walked to Camden and from there along the canal because I watched one of your videos. It was a really beautiful experience, thanks to your excellent videos!
They used to do quite a bit of filming in and around Brentford ... all sorts of shows ... they even filmed a goth-rock music video on the canal once - we were watching them out the office window ...
I used to live on the mooring by the Central Line bridge at Northolt. Thank you for this lovely video, which made me homesick, but also brought back fun memories of sailing to Sainsburys at Alperton!
Brilliant series, just amazing what you can find In London when you go off the beaten track, will have to try some of these walks one day down the Canals, amazing stuff :)

Great vid. On the subject of un-gated rail crossings, there's one just east of Westcombe Park station where a single-track freight line crosses underneath the main passenger line. You can access it from a footbridge that crosses the Blackwall Tunnel southern approach road, and it leads you into an intriguing alleyway that goes underneath two terraced houses!
A fascinating series of videos. When doing family history research, my sister discovered that our paternal great-great grandfather (a retired police sergeant) actually drowned in the Grand Union Canal at Rickmansworth in 1891. The coroner recorded an open verdict as there were no witnesses. Did he he jump, did he fall or was he pushed? We will probably never know.
I used to work in a building next to The Three Bridges back in the 00's, used to have a nice walk and have my lunch by the canal during the Summer months.
Another fine example of the stacked 3- modes of travel is the Saddleworth in Lancashire (Manchester to Leeds main line) railway arches over the Huddersfield Narrow Canal over the River Tame. There is also a canal lock under the arches.
If you go to Brentford, you can see the remains of the old Viaduct that leads you to the old Brentford Docks. Also, another bridge once used by the trains has been turned into a bridge for cars - you should check it out and maybe make a video? Btw I really enjoyed the canal series - just finished watching all of it now :)
Didn't they finally get rid of the arch over the main road in the mid 1990s? I worked in Brentford from 1992 to 2001, and have a recollection of the arch, or at least part of it still being there for a while ...

If you like heritage public transport, pop up to the Black Country Living Museum in Dudley, West Midlands. It has WORKING old trams, buses and trolleybuses as well as a working 19th century industrial revolution-esque town with a sweet shop and lots of interesting things to go around and see. There's also an old canal tunnel there which you can go through on regular trips. It's also very near Dudley Castle and Zoo, which are also quite nice on a sunny day. Not advertising, just day trip advice.

Hanwell Asylum water gate was never used for patients, it was built to bring coal and hops into the hospital. The large building inside next to the water gate was the brewery and housed the crane for unloading the boats. The sets of three small doors cut into the wall are used for fire hoses in case a major fire occurred in the hospital and more water was required. The canal at Three Bridges was diverted through the asylum grounds during the construction of the railway with the wall rebuilt on completion.
seem to recall that the old British Waterway sign that is by the hospital suggest that patients were brough in this way! we'll have to go back and check. but good info Ian, thanks!
Annoyingly I was really near it last year, but managed to miss the Three Bridges, as the Capital Ring walk continues up the Brent, I'll have to go back!
Ronnie Wood (of the Rolling Stones) came from this part of west London. Ronnie’s family, for generations back, had lived and worked on the canal barges.

I would have thought that Geoff would have included the locations of what used to be Willesden and Old Oak Common locomotive sheds that sat on opposite sides of the canal, only a few hundred yards (meters) apart. Also Kensal Green cemetery, where the canal separates the cemetery and the Great Western Railway. The canal being the only thing that separates the GWR and it's engineer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel (mentioned by Geoff in this episode) who rests in this cemetery.
Ik this isnt about canals, but i was just wondering... dont you think that it would save money to just merge the H&C and circle lines? I mean, the H&C is mostly just part of the circle line anyway.... You could call the the hammersmith and circle line

I was born and raised in Yiewsley, just up the Grand Union Canal from Hayes. I used to walk down the canal to get to Primary School.
I currently find myself by that bridge under the M4, I knew I'd seen it somewhere!
Grand union was the “M1” of its day.

at bulls bridge if you go towards tesco you'll see a sealed off part of the canal which has been pumped dry, so you can climb down to the bottom
