Huff didn't want to be in Huntington. He made that very clear when he interviewed for the VA Tech job, 3 games into his Marshall tenure, not 1 year, not two years but after 3 games. He has refused at least 5 contract ext. going beck to the day after the Note Dame win in 2022.He threw the fans and university under the bus more than once. He refused to do anything outside of his contract. You never seen him in the community or on the coaches tour during the spring, as he said "Thats not in my contract and not my responsibility".
This has aged POORLY. Huff has left the program without warning and there is currently a mass exodus of Marshall players heading to the transfer portal due to the sudden departure. As of yesterday, there has been 29 scholarship players from Marshall that have hit the portal since December 8th.
As a MU grad and lifelong fan, I liked Huff and wanted him extended, but there's one thing I am bummed about. He didn't give any kind of statement that I've seen thanking the fans. We didn't all hate him. There were folks that quite liked him, although I get the vibe he never liked Huntington. Regardless, I appreciate all he did and wish him the best at USM except when they play us.
This aged very poorly and it hanst even been 4 hours pretty much all of the marshall players are apparently hitting the transfer portal before the bowl game vs army. Looking pretty dark for Marshall next season
I was told by someone who works within the program that the AD and Huff had bad blood. As you mentioned, the buyout and always looking for the next job were huge issues, but there was an incident on the bus ride back from Appalachian State last year that really soured the relationship.
@herdpm1 Huff and most of the staff didn’t appreciate how Spears treated one of the staff members’ significant others. It was truly a minor incident, but when you have a coach who, in many ways, was already looking for reasons to be upset with Spears and to leave, it became a breaking point.
Marshall wants a coach that loves Marshall, which is totally understandable. Huff is a great coach, but he was never going to be that guy for Marshall. Both sides made the correct move by just moving on now while everyone is still in a good position.
The way it was explained to me, Charles Huff was offered 2 extensions both with several hundred thousand dollar raises, more money for assistants and more NIL to recruit with and Huff refused them, because he wanted a P4 job. Also, Charles Huff has interviewed every year he was at Marshall multiple times a year. His contract says he must notify the AD and President before he has discussion about another job and every year Marshall was having their fingers crossed about 3-4 times, hoping that he wouldn’t leave. Before this season, Huff wanted to have his salary guaranteed to him with a buyout if he was fired, but he wouldn’t allow any buyout to be placed such that if he leaves the he or the hiring school buys his contract. The buyout wasn’t steep it was equal to what he was guaranteed to make. So they agreed to tabled the discussion until the season ended. Again Huff had a list of schools that he was going to interview. There was a bigger school that Huff was certain thought would hire him because he won the league and he shut down conversations with Marshall. Marshall began a search and had 2 targets. Huff didn’t get the P4 job he wanted and the only offer he received was from 1-11 S. Miss. He didn’t want the S Miss job it just worked out that it was his only serious offer. Marshall hired their top target. Huff left. Huff literally hadn’t coached one game for Marshall and was notifying the school he was going for interviews. That was the beginning of the bad relationship, the board of directors and president being told that Huff who we believed in was looking for other jobs before he even coached one game. Remember Huff was never an OC or DC he was a position coach. He did not turn down Duke or Virginia Tech they hired another coach. Why would he turn down a P5 to coach a 1-11 Sun Belt team? Marshall basically got the impression, over and over again, that Huff didn’t want to be there and was making every attempt to leave because, he actually was making attempts to leave. Marshall will undoubtedly have a drop off next season, but Marshall is one those schools that a lot of people behind the scene are breaking their backs to make it successful. Also Huff inherited 11 players during his tenure that were drafted or signed as UDFA in the NFL (not all made an NFL roster) from the previous coach. He’s taking a ton of our players to S Miss, we’ll just have to see what happens. S Miss thinks they’re the big winners in this situation and maybe they will be in the end. My prediction is that Huff will lose until he wins then leave as soon as possible. Everyone is making Marshall out to be the bad guy, but Huff didn’t want to be there. Huff had moved on. Look at Huff’s resume he has about 7 jobs that he worked 1 or 2 years. He doesn’t stay long anywhere. S Miss has nothing to lose they’re a 1 win team.
@@UberBeats.303 I actually don’t think he will do well at a school that doesn’t have a recruiting advantage. Basically Huff is a very good recruiter. Huff’s X’s and O’s aren’t anything special and sometimes they’re pretty bad. At Marshall, huff was recruiting talent against G5 competition so a handful of good players and you hold a real advantage. P4 if you have a handful of good players you go 5-7, 6-6, 7-5 every year.
First, it's Albert McClellan, not Albert McClain. It's widely published that MU offered extensions to Huff several times over the years. The narrator said as much. By 2024, it was clear that he didn't want to stay and would leave at the end of the season. His tenure was filled with great highs (wins against Va Tech, at Navy, and at Notre Dame) and great lows (6-7 record in 2023 that included a 5 game losing streak, out of conference loss to Bowling Green, and MANY MANY games that should not have been that close). Even this year, teams like Western Michigan, ULM, ODU, and JMU could have easily been losses. The 2024 herd team only defeated 2 teams that finished with a winning record. I don't know why he didn't like it here. He interviewed for the Duke job pretty quickly after his first year where we finished 7-6. He didn't get it, but why even try that with a barely 500 record? If we had won 9 or 10, OK. That's a great turnaround. But 7-6, while not a bad start for a 1st year coach, isn't coach of the year worthy. 2022 we win 9 and we think it's rolling, but that year was fought with issues too. After the Notre Dame win, the OLine coach leaves immediately and we lose to 3 straight FBS schools (We beat Gardner-Webb by only 28-7 in the middle of those games. We do win at JMU, but their starting QB was out with an injury so that has an asterisk by it. We win out with several close ones to finish out on a 5-game streak. Huff's 4 years at MU were almost exactly the same at Doc's last 4 years as far as winning percentage (one was 64%, one 65%). When your guy wants to leave, wish them luck and hire the next guy.
Huff is the best coach they have ever had, should have enjoyed it more while you could. Sports are a business his loyalty to his players is what he cares about. Saturday’s are more enjoyable when you win.
So basically, Jim Justice pushed for to come in for the duration of his second term and now that big Jim is on his way to the Senate, Huff’s services are no longer needed?
They obviously upgraded to Tony Gibson. Now Marshall can play like the big boys in real college football land. Good for them. WOKE WILL GO BROKE SO THEY FIX THE WOKE!!!
You failed to mention that the entire Marshall football team has reportedly entered the transfer portal, so Marshall has NO team! Marshall has notified the Independence Bowl that they can't even field a team, and they have been replaced by Louisiana Tech!!!! Thus, the answers to your questions are no brainers! Without any players at all, it will not be possible for Marshall to have a successful season. On the other hand, it will not be difficult for Huff to improve Southern Mississippi's record of 1-11. As badly as Marshall handled Holliday, they have managed to do an even worse job with Huff.
Who stands out with this Marshall team? I did not watch or hear about Marshall this year. Still I don't think that Army vs Marshall should be the bowl matchup. I think Army's bowl opponent should have been Colorado.
