Just pre-ordered my audio copy. Ok not the same as reading, but when David reads his books to you its less reading a book and more like you are sitting down having a chat with him. Love it.
That might be the only audio book that I would consider buying. But I seem to have an aversion to being read to. And no I do not like driving and listening to someone read to me as I find it distracting.
The amount of love I have for David knows no bounds. This is a dream for an Anglophile like me. David in his true element. Humor and history. It just doesn’t get any better! Purchased!!!
I can't remember the last time I saw David Mitchells legs when he's sitting down! 😅 I expect this will be available on Audible, with David himself as the reader? That would be excellent!
Things I never thought I would type, part 2,819: "I really enjoyed your commercial advertisement and I am going to buy your product straight away." Thank you in advance for a good read, Mr Mitchell.
I’m often a bit embarrassed by my degree of David Mitchell fandom. I try not to be the sort who is “invested” in celebrities in some parasocial way, but it’s pretty hard not to feel that way about David and Victoria Coren Mitchell. They’re the kind of couple you wish were your parents. Super excited as I’ve listened to his two other books so many times on long drives that I practically know them by heart. I almost wish they had waited to put this out though-it’s not even coming out until September.
writing about Kings and Queens - it is what I do! I love David on WILTY, other quiz shows and his Shakespeare in Upstart Crow is delicious. I hope we can buy this across the pond.
I'm 99% sure that 20 years ago David said to himself, 'Okay, just a couple of decades working as a comedian, building up good will and popularity, and then the true fulfilment of the master plan... become an historian!' Oh, and do please tell me how wrong I am for typing 'an historian'.
So I spent an audible credit. - and it said, congratulations on your pre-order, it will be delivered to your library when it comes out 28th September ….
Hello Penguin Michael Joseph, I noticed there is a flash frame at around the 1:18 mark of this excellent video. I secretly hoped it was some weird subliminal message but, having managed a successful screenshot, it turns out to be a bit more mundane than that. Do I get a prize for my formidable observational and/or screengrabbing skills? Perhaps a signed copy of this book you seem so passionate about? Looking forward to hear from you! Best Regards, Theo
1:17 looked like a subliminal message but it's just some wonky editing, right before he says 'important'. Side note: David Mitchell sounds like a normal person at .75 speed.
I live in Canada, we don't seem to have Water stones or WHSmith (the only options I see for signed copies on the web site), how do I pre order/obtain when published a signed copy without getting raped by exchange rates and bloated shipping rates?
Subliminal advetising is surely a revenue tactic below you David, but the cover photo at 1:18 on the word important was very good, now i want the book was it because i saw it or not? Oh and a hilarious advertisement. Was it an theratrical personification of the Devil's advocate?
Fear not, Waterstone's does deliver to the US. "Rest of the World Delivery - £12.50 + £1 Per Additional Item." Signed copy available for pre-order now!
Is it offensive to say I'm gunna get my library to buy it? (Here, in NZ, there's precious few book shops, and the shelves tend to be all rugby and livestock )😂
Well done. Both of you have made at least one sale before the product is on the shelves. Or the one on the right did. Not sure about that chap on the left.
Everyone gave up trying to argue with David Mitchell, so now he has to do it with himself
That is a very concise description of his persona.
Reminds me of his old soapbox channel!
He’s self-aware enough to do it himself.
I'll be putting this on the bookshelf right beside my copy of Business Secrets of the Pharaohs.
I think you might be getting mixed with another Author - Mark Crorigan.
@@ascendancy425 I think David might be the one getting mixed up...
This is the best advertisement for a book that's ever been made, up to this time. Bravo, David. Truly.
Closely followed by Monty Python's Big Red Book.
*up to this time lol
@@cavemanjesus6993 you never know. Nice pfp btw, I like Hum.
Not quite the same type of advertisement but Richard Ayoade talking about his book on Graham Norton is still my favourite
Agreed
I love his little bit at the end about the word passionate, knowing full well he did an entire sarcastic rant about its use in slogans in a soapbox.
My first thought hearing that bit!

I nought the print version. I couldn’t read without hearing David’s voice in my head. 😁
I hadn't intended to buy another history book, but since no less than TWO Davids seem to like this one, it should be a good read!
I think Mr. Mitchell is too classy to mention that it would be "no fewer than two Davids", but I think he would be happy that someone else did.
@@IstasPumaNevada I have never been this delighted about being corrected on the internet before!

Should be jailed, pervert.
David Mitchell smartly ranting against himself... One could die under such load of joy!!!
Finally! I've been waiting years for an author by the name of David Mitchell!
Yeah me too, I had been to the clouds and searched the atlas but still hadn’t found one. 😅😅
I see David has fulfilled his dream of replacing Lee Mack with another David Mitchell.
Love the Soapbox call back with the passionate bit, in fact I think I’ll go watch that again
It’s really just Mark Corrigan’s dream - to finally write a history book!
I mean it's no Business Secrets of the Pharaohs, but it'll do...
@@jonathanveach369 I would SO buy that if he actually published it
I don't know if I should read it because I do love reruns of Inspector Morse. 😂

Love the character development that’s clearly happened since his Soapbox on “passionate”
I was thinking the same thing, next he'll say he could care less.
i love how the chairs + camera angle make both davids look child-sized.
I was searching David Mitchell and saw this posted yesterday what impeccable timing and pleasant surprise to hear from my favorite antagonist thinker
"Jokes are a young man's game" as if he's not going to be on WILTY season 46 in thirty years
Oh man, I hope so.
In fairness I can see both him and Mack less enthusiastic than they once were on that show, which is perfectly reasonable
I shall ready my little bell and special travel dressing gown.
Left your cape and top hat at the dry cleaner's? Just as well, lest the entire attire make you noticeable!
I am passionate about people buying this book. Have no plans to do so myself but am passionate about the idea of other people doing so.
I truly want to read that book now. Thats the way all products should be advertised.

“Best glossed over, yes.” Wonderful writing.
2:01 I wonder if David still records midnight airings of Morse, or if he finally gave in and bought the box set.
The dominoes slagging at the end was wonderful
I look forward to reading this. I hope there is an audiobook that David reads!
That's all lovely, Davids, but what's with the subliminal ad for Zillchett Dvaid's book at 1:18?
As an American I’ve never quite understood the British monarchy but also wanted a concise overview. This might be just what I need
I’ve never enjoyed an advert more! Ordered!
Anyone else's brain substitute "Dogfuckers" for Domino's or was that just me?
That's exactly what I "heard".
ope
I will now.
Yes! That's what I heard too. Initially, I thought that's why it was bleeped.

PLEASE tell me there an audiobook version of this book in which he just argues with himself while reading the book out loud.
I expect Lee Mack to write the preface. 😄
Brilliant. We should have more celebrities interview themselves in the future. It might be more interesting.
His haircut is very similar to that angry chap who used to be in charge of Germany.
A five-star review of one's own book; and it's David Mitchell, so... ordered 2.
Come for the historical literature, stay for the completely unprovoked attack on a sub-par fast food chain.
Will be released on US Audible in October - I have pre-ordered :-)
1:18 what is that upside down David Mitchell?
He is one of my favorite Brits. Very clever and would be awesome to share conversation with at a dinner party or ten.
If you should happen to put out the invites for dinner make sure to include Victoria.Double the value.🏴☠
What's with the upside down frame at 1:18?

I like the cool alter ego is David without a jacket and a slightly casual button up top lol
Wonder what the significance of the flipped frame at 1:18 is as Davis is saying "important".
What's with the upside down back to front frame around 1:18?
I'm 99% sure that 20 years ago David said to himself, 'Okay, just a couple of decades working as a comedian, building up good will and popularity, and then the true fulfilment of the master plan... become an historian!'

why is he upside down at 1:18 ? Is this to prevent it from violating copyright or something?

I'm glad I'm not the only insane person to scroll back and try to find out what was happening 😂
'Um, actually' you wouldn't be able to notice it if it was a truly subliminal message.
I hope reading this is less painful than boredom. Good ol' David Mitchell.
I am currently reading this and it is absolutely dense with humour. Go on treat yourself.
Okay, normally I like to read the page but for this I want the audiobook.

The book is fabulous, I’m reading this at the moment.
I pre-ordered my book from Amazon in the US. Any chance of signature will be in there?
2nd book, nice! First "Business Secrets of the Pharaohs", now this!
The answer to "why should I read it?" is "David Mitchell wrote it."
