thanks for this review, this has been exactly what i wanted to know... that 16-35pz lens is really worth its value where everything is so expensive. it's not much more expensive than the apsc counterpart. the pz lens is also smaller and more compact than the gm.
I really enjoy having both the 16-35pz and 20f1.8 to pair with my zv-e1 which gives me options between versatility and low light/depth of field yet keeping the rig compact.
really appreciate you talking about the fact fast glass doesn't matter for low light on Sony since you can bump ISO to 12,800 which you can't even consider on other camera brands, something people don't usually mention.
The PZ 16-35 is outstanding! It’s actually lighter than the 20mm 1.8. I use it all the time for Real Estate photos but for real estate videos, I’ll use the 14mm 1.8. That lens picks up where the 16mm and f4 may leave me wanting a bit more. Amazing combo. Dope video!
Currently deciding between the 14mm and 16-35 pz for realestate video! Will definitely rent both and decide from there. Thanks for sharing your experience ;)
Nice job as usual. I have the PZ f/4 and I love it. I don't see myself getting the 2.8 GMII. I think that when I want more blur I'll use my 24mm f1.4 GM or my 35mm f1.4 GM. To me, the 16-35mm is more of a documentary lens for when I don't have time to set up the shot. A f4 has been just fine for those occasions. Thanks again. Love your work.
I bought the 16-35 pz thinking that I’d send it back, but surprisingly I really like it. Yes we all want a fast lens but lve found it’s not an issue for what I do and as you’ve mentioned, the Sony cameras are low light beasts! Lightweight and internal zoom makes it great on gimbals and as I’ve mentioned, thought I’d be sending it back, but glad I didn’t.
Great comparison video, Jason. Until before this video, I was confused on which one to get. But the minimum focusing distance is what made me decide now to get the GM II. 🙂
About balance on a Gimbal and Focus Breathing: there was a Potato Jet interview with an engineer from ARRI, where he said that changing focus naturally causes focus breathing, because to focus you need to change position of an element inside of a lens (effectively slightly changing lens focal distance). This mean that if you want to avoid focus breathing, you need to introduce an extra element in the lens which would compensate when changing focus. This what ARRI does in their signature primes and I think this might be the case with GM II
Thanks for the comparison! When the 16-35PZ came out last year, it was the lens I’ve been looking for. I’m a travel photographer and a girl, so for me a lightweight lens is the most essential! With landscapes I mostly shoot af F8-F16, thus not even needing the F2.8. Before that I used the 24GM, also because it was the most lightweight option out there (and I personally don’t like Tamron). Maybe for you strong guys size and weight don’t matter! But it’s the first thing I look at when considering buying a lens.
Thanks Jason. I have the PZ and have been wanting the 2.8. After watching this you confirmed I don’t need it on the ZVE1 cause it is so good in low light👍🏻
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema You actually know what your talking about. Even though I live in the world of crap autofocus I still learn a lot about cameras and lenses.
I’m so glad you made this video. I bought the PZ, not finding your video first. I have had such anxiety about my decision and feel I know where I am now. I am a long lens shooter so this was confusing for me.
That’s what you do for normal gimbals yes. You extend 50% out. But the point if you listen to the video is that Sony design the lens to be perfectly balanced. I was demonstrating their claims as stated in my words in this video
If you balance the 16-35 at around 24mm, I think it would have a better chance of staying balanced since you balanced it in the center of the focal length range.
Awesome video mate and love the channel. I have the 16-35 PZ and the 24 1.4 GM. This combination for me is much better than the 16-35 GM, which costs more than my two lenses combined! My combination gives me more versatility and the f1.4 is quite a lot noticeably better than 2.8, plus gives a more unique bokeh. Also for landscape shots at 16mm I'll be stepping down the aperture anyway. Great comparison, would love to see some more tutorials from you on how you plan a shoot, particularly the b-roll , transitions and then editing. Cheers!!
I've been watching your vids ever since I looked to buy a ZVe1 then I go into a deep dive on pho and see you in an episode with Leighton! What a small world lol
Hi I’m just starting out and thinking of getting a wide angle zoom for work purposes. I do not have any wide angle zoom currently in my bag so would you recommend me getting 16-35gmii straight away since I don’t have any wide angle zoom to fall back on?
Currently do Real estate media and have 16-35 GM on my photo camera and the 16-35 F4 PZ for video. I’ve been contemplating upgrading the PZ but having a hard time justifying the price
Thanks for the review! A clever engineer at Sony might had thought: Hey if you mount an Nd Filter, it has to slightly shifts its weight towards the body to compensate the Nd Filter center weight moving more outwards. I would always have an Nd Mounted. How ever the power zoom is so much better. Hard decision. I don’t know how much I will be filming in 2.8. maybe 4.0 really is enough.
for ZVE1, family travel video to probably Tokyo or Europe, with dynamic stabilisation on, take both day and night time video, hope to have fantastic video quality, but I also want to enjoy travel. Should I get the 16-35 PZ or 16-35 GM II?
I must admit the gmaster does give you more options with that f2.8 but the low light performance of the zv-e1 makes the f4 lens fine to use. Tough choice but maybe go the f4 lens then extra money put towards a fast prime like a 20mm f1.8 or 24mm f1.4
One thing that was better at 2.8 was the medium shot separation at 35mm. Like you said, closeups not so much but the medium shots have better separation which is useful with run n gun and saves me some time to squeeze out an extra shot without reaching for my 24-70mm. I have the GM II preordered mostly for the lighter weight and keeping that subject separation. Landscapes it would be overkill (don't need background blurred)
you're right. At 35mm is where you will definitely notice the big difference. Specially if you need a closer focus distance which will give you even more bokeh
Hi Jason, just the video I was looking for. While I think about the aperture difference, I am wondering what lens/aperture setting you are using in the main talking head segment of this video. I know it isn't using the lenses under discussion, but it has wonderful subject separation. Could you tell me what you are using?
hi, very good video, thank's. I guess this was asked in other places, or eve here: what if you balance in the gimbal @24mm, to say in the middle, would that help with the overall balance? thx,
actually one of the things the gm lens doesn't have is the powerzoom so if you're using it on a gimble, the manual zoom motor wont cut it (i actually used it and the belt will slip so you cannot get consistent results). the internal zoom is something you cannot sacrifice if you do a lot of it.
depends on use situation I will say, for interior wide shot I prefer a smaller aputure to see thing more clearly, while for interviews and documentaries, normally it's hard to go lower than F4 for a wide shot cam A, since you might need to capture the relationship between the environment and the interviewees, while nowadays most sony camera have dual ISO, Noise problem already not a big deal though, F2.8 might be benefits in just a shallow depth of field nowadays, but I rarely do a wide shot with F2.8 in a wide shot indeed, for F2.8 or more, I rather grab another 24-70 2.8 or 70-200 GM2 for B-Roll more better.
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema god bless brother, I just pre ordered the a7cii, upgrading front the a7c mark one (8bit) to 10bit was well worth it in my opinion. Jason you have to do an a7c vs a7cii comparison once you get the chance. Thanks mate!
I am about to make about $7000 worth of lenses and I’m stuck between the 16 to 35 GM ii or getting the 16 to 35 F4 and the 35 1.4 GM prime can you please help me out with this
Your vids just answered my curiosity since the annoucement of the camera and lens a week ago, thank you very much I wish A7CR's ISO performance can handle lowlight with that 16-35 pz. (because i'm gonna paring them with my next winter trip) Ok, maybe not high as 12,800 (3200-6400 for hi-res is a blessing)
As a real estate videographer and photographer you’ll never find me at F2.8 unless it’s a detail shot. Photos are always shot F7.1 or F8 to ensure everything is in focus Video F4 ensures all establishing shots are sharp and in focus. With Sony bumping the ISO is perfectly fine to accommodate for the smaller aperture.
i'm also an REP myself. the only issue with the PZ lens for me is the barrel distortion but only around 16mm though which i rarely use. The widest i used it is 18mm.
The price for the GM 16-35 mk 2 is ridiculous....u can get the PZ g lens plus 20mm 1.8 g lens for that price which now u have a vloging lens for day time and one for night/low light. I have the 16-35 pz and love the form factor soooo much more better than the huge GM.
Hi Jason. Thanks again for a great pros and cons video. I have the old F4 16-35 and love it. F4 vs F2.8 has not been an issue for me - noise wise. I am interested in the PZ, to use with my FX6, but also with my A7iv. Can you test whether the PZ will zoom on the A7iv if you use the Sony wired remote? That would be great when tripod mounted.
weird question but can this lens work well with an APSC body like the a6700? might be overkill but I plan on investing in full frame eventually so I wonder if this can be great on APSC bodies too
Thank you for the video. I know each lens has pluses and minuses but it would be great to see those compared separately for video and stills. Just my opinion for what I was looking to take away. Had the v1 GM and have the v2 on pre-order but have the PZ f/4 in my hands. Bought from a friend who left Sony for Nikon and it was really brand new. Also own the other GM II midrange and telephoto zooms and thought I would try to complete the set but still question if it’s worth it. For me in the midrange and telephoto it definable was worth the f/2.8 but at the wide end? Just curious if you have looked at other wides like the Sigma 16-28/2.8 DG DN. It doesn’t have PZ, which as a stills shooter I don’t want, it’s small and light (although 420 gm) as well. Continue to rethink this lens selection.

I am still confused between these 2 options. Will you please help me with it. 1. sony 16-35gmII 2. sony 16-35pz+20mmf1.8.
Interesting assessment. You didn't focus so much on size, heft. When working on a set, shooting in a studio or from/near your car size and weight ane non issues. Trecking for miles or even walking all day on holiday is a different situation and changes how one sees things. I have owned upteen Sony wides incl most of primes (14, 20, 24, 28, 35) I sold my 28 (not so good) but have both the G and GM in f1.8 and f1.4 sor diff use situations. On zooms I currently have the PZ and sold my under used GM 16-35 f2.8 mk1 original. I sold because IQ didn't hold up towards 35mm end and it was a big heavy carry alongside my mkii GMs 24-70 and 70-200 (both excellent). I may yet buy the 26-35 GM again in mkii version (vs mk1 it's smaller, lighter and has better IQ). If I do buy then I won't quickly dispose of my very pleasing PZ which is ideal for video. It's also good for travel too and often as not one stops down for architecture or landscapes. If I want 'fast' eg astro landscapes or night/low light then the Sony primes are way faster and it's easy to pack one or two fast primes to complement a f4 zoom.
Do you prefer a slower zoom lens or a faster prime? Bokeh aside, the decision for me is coming down to more lowlight options flexibility/noise reduction vs zooming with my feet Its really coming down to the viltrox 16mm 1.8 vs a Tamron 17-28 2.8
@@papaelf_ well… I don’t know. The $800 one right? I guess I haven’t considered it yet. I guess it’s not… as wide? Would you say its sharper and/or better for landscape and architecture?
@@ProjectileGrommet The Sony 20mm f1.8 is razor sharp with excellent build quality and autofocus...at $800 it is excellent value. Nothing Viltrox makes comes close to it.
The GM2 is now $3,149 Aussie. Still dear. I have the PZ lens and as a landscape photographer, I love the image quality but have to say the handling of it really ticks me off. The focus ring and zoom ring are so close that when I'm working with it in gloves on cold days I have to always look away from the viewfinder and have a good look at the lens so I can grab the right ring. I love how the GM2 has the zoom ring well away from the focus ring. Plus I miss being able to look at the lens and know what focal length I am at. This zoom by wire... yeah not a big fan. That is why I'm now saving up the extra $$ for the GM2.

Hi am wanting a 16-35 F4 PZ do you think this would be good for night scapes in the blue hour please
For landscapes you're going to want to stop down for sharpness so the aperture doesn't matter.
Thanks for the comparison Jason. 100k subs coming up! Cheers from Las Vegas.
Bokeh aside, the decision for me is coming down to more lowlight options flexibility/noise reduction vs zooming with my feet
Its really coming down to the viltrox 16mm 1.8 vs a Tamron 17-28 2.8
Why not the Sony 20?
@@papaelf_ well… I don’t know. The $800 one right? I guess I haven’t considered it yet. I guess it’s not… as wide? I guess I don’t mind much because anything is wider than my 70-180 2.8 haha
Would you recommend the Sony 1.8 over the 16mm viltrox? I really don’t care about the viltro’s screen if that helps? Would you say its sharper and/or better for landscape and architecture?
I personally prefer faster prime in almost every situation
@@ProjectileGrommet The Sony 20mm f1.8 is razor sharp with excellent build quality and autofocus...at $800 it is excellent value. Nothing Viltrox makes comes close to it.
Another fantastic video from the Aussie Undone 😂 How does the autofocus performance compare?
😂😂😂😂 love it. Auto focus is almost identical when putting the gmaster to f4. They both have the new XD linear motors so that is expected
It’s actually a good point not being able to see the zoom length on the lens with the PZ - didn’t realise that from scanning the web
For video I never use less than F4. F5.6 is my personal favourite.
Oh easy choice for you then haha
thanks , this is a good info video
I have 16-35 gm II but want sony fe c 16-35 T 3.1 G
The budget Sony cine lenses are all due for an update
What do you think about the sigma 14-24mm?
I have full frame but also an fx30, but the fx30 crops a lot, so I think that sigma is the best option for both full and crop
Greetings from Mexico! 🇲🇽
thnx you are the best
The 16-35 GMII looks awesome. If I was starting from scratch I would consider it. That said, I'm real happy with my compact 16-35 PZ, and I also have the brilliant 12-24 f2.8 GM. Sony is just killing it with their lens line-up.
I'm glad they're updating all the older stills lenses and making them usable for video
Commenting this in Dec 2024 almost 2025. I still love my Sony PZ G!
Pretty good review. The only problem is that you did not mention the original 16-35mm. Skipped right over it.
No one wanna talks about the super jacked makeup artist ?! 😂 she’s so cool !
Haha she’s got a fitness competition coming up in 4 weeks 😂 that’s why she’s currently very shredded
14mm GM + 16-35 G PZ + 24-70 GM II + Samyang AF 135 1.8
the power zoom lense sounds good on a gimbal
Actually is quite nice
Balance it around 21mm and it should be balanced on both ends
Great video thanks !! I have this 16-35 pz lens but on manual mode I have to use the ring to change the aperture I cannot do it on the body of my a7IV … ? Too bad
The price of GM II is insane
12800 has slightly nastier colour rendition tho
😁 Я выбираю 16-35 ф4 Zeiss
Wish GM2 was internal zoom and 1mm wider.
1mm! I can agree about internal zoom but 1mm won't make a significant difference really
Go Canon Mirrorless and get the Canon RF 15-35mm F2.8. there goes your 1mm wider
I don't know what to do lol
