He even seems to be conscious of how hard he bites, because he goes after his food like an absolute savage, but play fights with my hand, and does these little death rolls to my finger tips without ever leaving a mark on me.

The other one wasn’t, by a stretch 😅 we have presumed that it had an underlying issue as was always a bit nuts and never grew close to the size of the other male we had. Would recommend them as the 3 we had all had brilliant personalities distinct patterning, would definitely have them again. An under appreciated lizard, especially here in the UK
Chuckwallas used to be around in the 1980s and are so cool. I don’t know why they disappeared but I never see them now. I remember them being great pets.

Toadheads! If you want to sacrifice *potential* handleability, for a super unique awesome little species, toadhead agamas are awesome. They also go doot doot doot and shimmy below the substrate and it's cute to watch.
Moroccan uromastyx are the easiest if my research is correct. They come from a pretty temperate region of Africa where night time temperatures can be freezing and there regions with snow. They also eat grasses too, lots of grasses and tough herbaceous plants.
We got a baby Moroccan Uromastyx almost 3 years ago. His colors are NEON and so beautiful, they are very hardy. He is a funny guy , he isn't chill like some other lizards but he is very entertaining to watch and feed from tongs. He loves sprouted lentils, dry lentils, different greens and seeds. We do try a variety of veggies and fruits. He doesn't seem to eat much of it though. Except recently some acorn squash.
Can't handle collared lizards?? That's news to me, they've always been so incredibly chill in my experience. I was able to to just pile them into my hand when I went in to clean and they just sat there admiring the scenery, and every time they saw me they wanted to start climbing me. Incredibly friendly little guys! Are there just a chunk of collared out there that are horrible to handle that I've missed? I was never told NOT to handle them by any means, at least.
He didn’t know what he was talking about when it actually comes to collared lizards as a pet. They’re amazing to handle and are def not a “Display only Pet!”
I don’t own any reptiles, but I enjoy watching your channel and learning a lot about reptiles and their care. Hopefully I can have one one day . I think beardies and Uromastyx are adorable. I would love to keep a crested gecko or leopard gecko. I went to my first reptile show this year, and I got to hold a leopard gecko, she was very sweet, and I wanted to bring her home so much but was not able to right now but maybe in the future.
I'd say any of those lizards you mentioned would be the best. I just have beardies but I do want a crested gecko too. I do have 3 mice as well, we will breed them in the future to have free pinkies. My mice are sweethearts and I'll never overdue them. Maybe twice I'll breed a female then I'll let them retire. I don't want to stress my mice out.
Thank you for making that decision and not getting one if you can't take care of it. All too often that isn't the case sadly. I really hope you can one day live your reptile dream, you seem like someone that really would care well for their pets
Shinglebacks could be a bearded dragon alternative, though they are hard to get outside Australia. Similar size, similar temperature & humidity requirements (overlapping natural ranges), also good to handle. They'd be good for someone who doesn't like dealing with insect feeders too because their diet should be about 80% vegetation and the remaining 20% doesn't need to be live insects, it could be snails, canned insects, eggs, dog food, etc. Some of the subspecies/localities are absolutely stunning to look at.
Love that Collareds are being recommended, They were my first reptile some 14 or so years back now. They are soo much more entertaining to watch than beardies, So much more active, but yes that does mean they aren't overly easy to handle. That said it's not because they are fiesty and they do tame down lovely, they are just less robust than a chunky beardie and lightning fast. From memory my collareds were in the region of 40 grams compared to a 400-500 gram beadie. They are one of a few species that can run on their back legs so it really is all about how confident a handler you are, how secure your facility is etc. I'm not anti beardies at all having had both at the time including breeding both at a high level but there is no bettter lizard than a collared if you aren't a heavy handler.
I got two painted agamas (and one Uromastyx yemenensis) from a breeder in Quebec, possibly the same one you talked to. They're so much fun to interact with, with great personalities.
The Eastern Collared Lizard is actually my states official reptile ! See them all the time out camping and they’re definitely something I want in my collection in the future
Oklahoma aqua flame is a must have didn't know you could have them as pets and use to live there and have a pic of one from an old church we visited when I lived there and now I have to have one, use to have a beard and love them both, but reminds me of my childhood trips with my fam
Absolutely adore my ackie, but compared to a beardie they have adhd. Mine is all over the place and so busy. They use me as a jungle gym and there is no chill 😂
I just saw a Collared Lizard for the first time today and she was sooo cool looking! I had bought some substrate for my leopard gecko that was totally not what I thought it was, so i posted it on a local FB group to see if anyone in my area needed it, and this nice couple that owns an exotic plant store had just picked one up as a rescue and it was perfect for her! She's still pretty little, her name's Chunky lol. I got a super cool plant while I was there too!
Love the list videos man. You should look into Omanosaura jayakari! There's a small handful of videos on youtube of them, but I just got a pair and honestly they could be on this list. An interactive little lacerta that eats plants, bugs, and seeds!
Northern blue tongue skink. I can't get enough of these guys. They eat a little bit of everything, they have interesting personalities and they are super fun to watch stomp around their enclosures.
Funny when you said that bearded dragons dont cohab well, and I think about my 2 male bearded dragons that luckily enough can live together because they were born together
I've considered ackies and uromastyx before but the thing that's really selling me on beardies so far is how they'll just chill on your shoulder. I hear Uromastyx tend to be a little flightier and prefer to hide and ackies are super active and I don't foresee one wanting to just chill and hang out. I did not know that chuckwallas were herbivorous tho. I'm putting them on my list of potentials cuz not having bugs around is also a huge plus
I love my beardie, his name is Crowley. About 1 year old now. I’ve had cats and rabbits my whole life, when my bunny Meinx passed last year I decided it’s time to try something new (I follow snake discovery and fell In love with reptiles) snakes are awesome but feeding rats is to much for me personally bc I think they’re cute too lol.. I’m perfectly fine with feeding bugs as I grew up in FL where bugs were horrible and I have a vendetta against them lmao
I used to catch collard lizards in the Utah desert when I was a kid. Moved to Arizona and that is an awesome place for watching many of these in the wild. The dessert iguana is also an amazing one to see.
My friend Josh had one that ran away. He says it's probably hibernating through the harsh Wyoming winter and it will be back in spring though. Thank God.
We are lucky to live in an area where common collared lizards live. In our back yard garden we build several flower beds with local limestone boulders for them. We call this the lizard garden. At least 3 common collared lizard families live there and often they venture out all the way to the porch. We never use insecticides to make sure they have plenty to eat. :D Absolutely adore them and miss them dearly during the winter months.
I agree 100% about the collard lizards. I love them and they are just so awesome and they can tame pretty easily. Probably want an Eastern Collared Lizard for colors but the Desert Collared Lizards are pretty awesome too. Edit: I agree about the chuckwallas too. I've personally have never had them before but my dad has. He says they are pretty aggressive but they will tame out and they are just so awesome.
Unfortunately here in Australia, there are restrictions to us only having Aussie reptiles so your videos help me learn and get to experience many reptile species!! Thanks!!
I got a ball python from a local pet store 2 years ago. He had a bowel obstruction and a few deformed ribs that made feeding difficult. Their vet said he probably wouldn't make it. Pet store gave him to me as hospice case. I've had him 2+ years and he is doing great! Ready for my next baby. I can't decide between a king snake, northern blue-tongued skink, or argentine Tegu. I have a long list of dream animals, but these are the top three I'm trying to decide between.
Hey Adam, so I live here in Canada and have no real following so I can't do much, so I thought I would come to you. Can you direct your viewership to the latest video Clint just posted? Or maybe just kind of parrot him in case there are American fans of yours who don't follow him? With this kind of thing, reach is everything. It effects us too up here, not only because we will get less access to amazing reptiles, but because as I'm sure you know, our government just looooves to parrot theirs. Hope you at least read this, thanks in advance and have a great rest of your day.
One of my absolute favorite reptiles I own is my Frilled Neck Lizard (Frilled Dragon). Practically the exact same requirements as a beardie, but with a little more climbing room. It took a little work to calm her down to be handleable, but now she just chillson my shoulder like a beardie
Thanks that is great. Most of the bearded in Santa Barbara are related to ours. I did them for my Son when He was in grade school. We got very good with hatching at one time we had 200 kids. All got good homes. Our matriarch finally went we stopped dragons since then. I may look for a couple again but I am Not breeding. It's too much for me now. I will try later to post pics.
Thank you for doing this episode. I have been pondering about what other reptiles I could get that can live in a similar terrarium as a bearded dragon.
I'm surprised you didn't mention Rankin's Dragon! They're also called Dwarf Bearded dragons here. Almost identical in care needs and it looks like a baby Bearded dragon! Gets to about 10-12 inches 😁
Great list! I have to admit we got Decker our Uromastyx instead of a Beardie...lol. Ackie Monitors are awesome; highly recommended either of these from personal experience! Thanks for using Decker and his sidekick Sherman (Russian Tortoise).
Think of it like ice cream Bearded dragons - vanilla Ackies- chocolate Uromastyx - mint chocolate chip Painted agama - clotted cream Chuckwalla - strawberry Collared lizard - that weird ice cream which you get from your uncles brothers farm which tastes like grass Mmm now I'm hungry
@@WickensWickedReptiles it was awesome! There was a big egyptian uromastyx we called the Dub Dub that lived in an old bunker I used to pass on my way to work. People were actually scared of him, which is just wild to me.
This video just reinforces that my "type" of lizard seems to be (more or less) diurnal desert dweller XD (aka: I wanted Ackies, Uros and Beardies anyway but now I lowkey want the others on the list too)
I got a bearded dragon today, it's a rare version called the "Hypo zero" and bearded dragons are amazing, it's rude to put in the title not to get one, I know there may be 'better alternatives' but bearded dragons are good to
Bearded dragon is the cutest dragon 💘 I could never not have one 😍 only lizard that can compete with that amount of cuteness is leopard gecko 😆 all lizards are cute tho it' s just that beardies and gecks are cuteness overload to the max, cutest animal on planet earth if you ask me
I had a collard and he was amazing. Very easy to handle once he got used to you. Wasn’t aggressive or fearful or anything, but they love to run and climb so that can make handling a little more difficult than beardies.
Humidity issues make uro's and ackie's a bit difficult to keep but got to caution about humidty with Collared lizards as well as respitory infections are common. There are however one of the most colorful and interesting lizards to keep.
I remember when I was 4 or 5 and I had a collection of stretchy rubber lizards. One was a collared lizard and another was some sort of skink with a blue tail. I even had a salamander ( idk how they managed to include amphibians )
I remember the brand actually. It was geckos and co ( even tho half of them weren't geckos and at least 3 were salamanders ). They made a few spin offs like piranhas and co ( not many piranhas but moray eels, redtail catfish, triggerfish and stone fish) as well as frogs and co ( tomato frogs, bullfrogs, mantellas etc ). Tbh idk if they are sold internationally or just in the uk but I loved playing with them ( ohh the nostalgia ). I had a bunch of weird animal stuff as a little kid ( shark teeth, iguana shed, a ded insect collection ( I still have that actually and bug magazines. Not to mention David Attenboroughs life in the undergrowth was fun to watch ( even though I didn't really know half the terms used but now I do ) and tons of plastic animals and stuffed toys all animal related. Honestly not much has changed. Now I have a bunch of live animals which I love and love creating little habitats for them. Oh yea and I loved looking for bugs and toads in my garden. Especially those fat slugs. Once an animal nerd always an animal nerd. And I'll probably be one for decades to come lol
After owning both a Uro and a Bearded, the Uro wins for everything except how social it is. If the Uro was even half as social as my bearded, I'd own 3 or 4 of them.
For me they would be In Addition to, not instead of. I have wanted a bearded dragon for a couple decades now but just haven't had the money to do it. I WILL have one someday and plan on having a Reptile Room with a variety of lizards and snakes. I love watching your videos as they give me a better idea of what my potential options are. In the meantime I try to educate myself so when the time comes I'll know how to care for them properly.
Anyone here ever heard of the shield-tailed agama? I was just browsing Josh's Frogs and apparently they have captive-bred ones for sale and, over a very cursory search of the species, they are apparently a desert-dwelling species of 4-inch long geckos from the deserts of Ethiopia. They're omnivores and will eat insects and plants just like bearded dragons, but they are also smaller than most leopard geckos. I'd love if Adam ever looked into them since information is relatively sparse, but they look super cool and interesting and would definitely fit the role of a bearded dragon replacement for anyone who doesn't wish to buy a massive tank.
Additional Ackie Perk: Tired of your Beardie laughing at you offering them a salad? An Ackie is a great alternative because they need no salad! So much easier to toss in some inverts, no bowl required, than become a 5 star chef just for the customer to poop on your food and leave without paying.
What is YOUR favorite species of lizard?
Probably the nephrurus Levi’s hahaha
Crested gecko
Ambronia graminea
Crocodile Monitors are the best starter pet, for an intrrmediet I would reccomend a Komodo. Just my opinion tho

He didn’t know what he was talking about when it actually comes to collared lizards as a pet. They’re amazing to handle and are def not a “Display only Pet!”
I feel like collared lizards are so underrated and so beautiful!
I have 2 beardies and it's so so worth it. But I really want a Collared Lizard they're so cute
I'm officially a mealworm breder. I used dry coco fibre with some cork bark as well as spinach and cucumber and now I have lots of little mealworms
That is awesome!
Pro tip, just keep them in dry oatmeal. They'll get bigger and have a lot more nutrients.
Add the cucumber or other veggies for hydration of course
Do they cohabitate?
The Eastern Collared Lizard is actually my states official reptile ! See them all the time out camping and they’re definitely something I want in my collection in the future
that's so cool!
Oklahoma aqua flame is a must have didn't know you could have them as pets and use to live there and have a pic of one from an old church we visited when I lived there and now I have to have one, use to have a beard and love them both, but reminds me of my childhood trips with my fam
Love seeing wild chuckwallas here in Utah!
awesome!
Absolutely adore my ackie, but compared to a beardie they have adhd. Mine is all over the place and so busy. They use me as a jungle gym and there is no chill 😂
same!!
The collared lizard at Clint's reptile room is very handleable
I'll check it out
Northern blue tongue skink.
I'm so glad Ackies made the list! They are awesome pets, not TO hard to care for, and so much fun to watch in their enclosure.
Although they will eat you out of house and home 😂 feeding can be expensive if you don't breed your own bugs
ackies are awesome!
I'd actually like more on the chukwalla as I've seen less care guides on that lizard than any other on the list.
Sttooooopppp making me want new things 😭 first hognoses now ackies. You and snake discovery are killing me! Cool list though really neat variety.
One of these days I want a WWR t-shirt that says “this is not a care guide”
hahaha I should make em!
Thanks!!
sure but you have shinglebacks just walking around all willy nilly haha
Yea!
I have been pondering about what other reptiles I could get that can live in a similar terrarium as a bearded dragon.
enjoy!
I love Savanah Uromastyx!! They're so colorful and cute, tiny dinosaurs with spiky tails!!
right!?
The colour morphs of some dragons are sic. Those brick red ones are so nice to me.
I'm surprised you didn't mention Rankin's Dragon! They're also called Dwarf Bearded dragons here. Almost identical in care needs and it looks like a baby Bearded dragon! Gets to about 10-12 inches 😁
Yeah, crazy he overlooked Rankin's Dragons!
They look like a baby beardy!
Crazy!
They’re great… can’t understand why they aren’t more popular!
@@MrsVrba it's the price
I think all of these are amazing animals.
This is perfect timing. I’m trying to pick a beardie substitute thank you so much.
enjoy!
Collared lizards are so much fun to watch and if hand treadmill is your idea of handling, they’re great at that too lol
Great list! I have to admit we got Decker our Uromastyx instead of a Beardie...lol. Ackie Monitors are awesome; highly recommended either of these from personal experience! Thanks for using Decker and his sidekick Sherman (Russian Tortoise).
I rarely hear much about Chuckwallas! Wonder why that is? Good video!
That's why I got a red Bearded Dragon. I didn't want the same old beige, yellow one. There's other morphs like white, zero, black, dark red.
for sure!
I've seen zoos cohab Chuckwallas with Collared Lizards, Spiny Lizards, a Desert Box Turtle, Desert Tortoises, Quail and Burrowing Owls.
now that I think about it I’ve never seen a Bearded Dragon in the wild
wow eh
I LOVE Uromastyxs there so beautiful and cool also its kinda funny i just got a beardie yesterday
that is so awesome!
Think of it like ice cream
Bearded dragons - vanilla
Ackies- chocolate
Uromastyx - mint chocolate chip
Painted agama - clotted cream
Chuckwalla - strawberry
Collared lizard - that weird ice cream which you get from your uncles brothers farm which tastes like grass
Mmm now I'm hungry
hahahah this is actually so accurate
I just want to say that the Letterkenny jokes have not been lost...keep 'em up!
I used to see giant uromastyx in the wild when I was in the Middle East. Super cool experience
that is amazing!
@@WickensWickedReptiles it was awesome! There was a big egyptian uromastyx we called the Dub Dub that lived in an old bunker I used to pass on my way to work. People were actually scared of him, which is just wild to me.
This video just reinforces that my "type" of lizard seems to be (more or less) diurnal desert dweller XD
(aka: I wanted Ackies, Uros and Beardies anyway but now I lowkey want the others on the list too)
same!
Clown agamas are awesome. I have 11 atm! With 11 eggs in the incubator.
amazing!!!
"I just ate so many wings and now I can't think" is the vibe of the day lol
Hey Adam, has little Stevie been chewing on your hands? In each successive video you have more wounds lol.
I got a bearded dragon today, it's a rare version called the "Hypo zero" and bearded dragons are amazing, it's rude to put in the title not to get one, I know there may be 'better alternatives' but bearded dragons are good to
Bearded dragon is the cutest dragon 💘 I could never not have one 😍 only lizard that can compete with that amount of cuteness is leopard gecko 😆 all lizards are cute tho it' s just that beardies and gecks are cuteness overload to the max, cutest animal on planet earth if you ask me
for sure!
*“Nice execution. You’re doing terrific.”*
take about 10-15% off there Dan
I dont like spamming comments however I want to point out how cute the Urmostyx is
they sure are cute
I had a collard and he was amazing. Very easy to handle once he got used to you. Wasn’t aggressive or fearful or anything, but they love to run and climb so that can make handling a little more difficult than beardies.
Humidity issues make uro's and ackie's a bit difficult to keep but got to caution about humidty with Collared lizards as well as respitory infections are common. There are however one of the most colorful and interesting lizards to keep.
Cool alternatives but my hearts with the Beardies lol.
Hehe, the way the beardie is sitting on your shoulder makes it look like its breathing smoke because of the humidity machine in the back.
that's fire breath bro!
Guess what I got last weekend 👀 … a Cuban False Chameleon! She’s mostly gray and I named her Nova 💫
I have a bearded dragon & SHE IS AMAZING! My whole family LOVES her!
Definitely the Ackie!!! I do not think Diamond was amused.
Uromastyx for the win!
Also I'm betting the breeder in Quebec you were discussing agamas with was Lisabeth Villeneuve? XD She's where I got my uro!
Can't wait for a dedicated video on Painted agama
for sure!
Omg the collard lizards colours! They are so stunning 😍, anyone else thought he said Chuck Walis 🤦♀️
I remember when I was 4 or 5 and I had a collection of stretchy rubber lizards. One was a collared lizard and another was some sort of skink with a blue tail. I even had a salamander ( idk how they managed to include amphibians )
so cool!
And I'll probably be one for decades to come lol
my sister's bearded dragon is so social!
all because she did show him affection early...
if your bearded dragon's agressive, you don't take your time, you are rushing!
After owning both a Uro and a Bearded, the Uro wins for everything except how social it is. If the Uro was even half as social as my bearded, I'd own 3 or 4 of them.
Your channel is my favorite reptile channel
For me they would be In Addition to, not instead of. I have wanted a bearded dragon for a couple decades now but just haven't had the money to do it. I WILL have one someday and plan on having a Reptile Room with a variety of lizards and snakes. I love watching your videos as they give me a better idea of what my potential options are. In the meantime I try to educate myself so when the time comes I'll know how to care for them properly.
I have a savannah monitor. He's wonderful. Very smart and stubborn.
Well said
Awesome Video! Keep up the great work. Watching all the way from Northern Ireland, United Kingdom !!
