  • This brass band arrangement of this historic march was created by Ms. Sorrel Hays in 2010, and commissioned by her brother Col. J. Ray Hays of the Texas State Guard. This version was premiered at the Ima Hogg home that same year. The original march was found in piano version in the stacks of the Houston Public Library. Further history of the march was found in the archives section of the HPL, including photos of the composer, Emma Bujac.. The Houston Light Guard had a storied history of service to Texas and the United States. The Texas Militia unit came into being in 1873 on San Jacinto Day. In addition to state service, it responded to the Spanish American War, World Wars I and II, and the Cold War. It's veterans organization voted to end its group's existence 150 years later on San Jacinto Day in 2023. During World War II it served as Company G of the 143rd Infantry Regiment, 36th Division. US Army.
