I can't believe Toyota have rooted up the new Prado. Get the crap out of the boot, ditch Ad-blu, get the 150L fuel back onboard and give us an option for the tyre on the back door.
Some company will do it, you have to remember it's regulations that force Toyota to do this but because the policy or philosophy at Toyota is "how will the customer use this" it's much easier to modify or get round the problem than it is for cars like fords, Isuzu is also another good alternative. They do the bare minimum to comply and wait till the last so called minute to update thank them for that cause that's what affords us the large numbers of second hand 120-150 series that are found around and as people move to the new 250. It's a compromise as they say. The alternative is cutting all the 4x4s they make and making cross overs in place.

After 15 years and that’s the best Toyota could come up with? Toyota is the largest carmaker in the world and they still can’t come up with a decent hybrid diesel, if fuel usage was cut in half and more power through a hybrid diesel you would justify the boot
Payload less than the previous model and towing heaving loads could see the AdBlue refills required every 2,000 K's NOT the 8,000 quoted by Toyota. Why would anyone buy one ? Such a hard hitting objective review by the auto journalist ?
A very polite review! Basically it looks great, but got an ancient under powered engine, an unusable boot, its 200kg heavier, its got a useless mild hybrid system, it's been priced to make it uncompetitive, and it's been ruined by emission regulations. Can't see any reason to buy this vehicle.

@@orangejuicepony6881 the third row of the Fortuner could be removed and have a lot more space than the 250. About the power spec, it also has a 1GD with 150 kw and 500 nm, and for now no 48 volt system that brings more weight and complexity for a marginal benefit.

They really nailed the aesthetics and interior look, it looks great. So much better than the previous generation. Shame about the Adblue/hybrid nonsense and boot storage issues.
I'd take a 150 Kakadu over this any day of the week. Factory rear diff lock, kdss (flat through corners and better wheel articulation off road), sliding middle row, larger boot, larger fuel tank, easily accessible spare wheel on the back, better departure angles, no AdBlue, less tech to go wrong and cheaper.
Toyota has many years to see what „best in class” is and they have missed the mark, yet the Toyota brand and reliability and its special place in Australia will still make it a winner. That’s despite some shortcomings like space in 2nd row (and third if you have that model, and Series 150 was better) and the lack of space in boot (the 48v battery should have been positioned elsewhere), volume control in weird spot, plasticky finish and slippery wireless charger space, lack of rear locker (compared to previous series)… and that’s just what I’ve observed when checking the Kakadu at a dealership
That rear storage area is pathetic. Imagine the noise of the flimsy plastic storage box banging over every bump in the road. I was keen on one of these, but will be looking elsewhere.
What has been missed in every review i've seen, Sam I hope you can do some research here. The achilles heel of the 150 is the computer chips positioned under the headlight, these aren't potted or have water tight seals so it can be VERY expensive to do a river crossing even below the recommended wade depth if the bow wave gets any water into these units. Given the replacement cost it's almost planned to fail. Has this been fixed on the 250?

Putting the wheel on the back (with a swinging arm) would have solved a LOT of problems. Use that space underneath for the battery BS. And flat floor comes back :)
I don’t understand how you’d call that powertrain “pretty good” and not a massive step forward as if there’s even a step forward to talk about. South Africa as well. Was surprised Toyota would do this in Australia. The 7 seat Australia boot space is terrible. People buy boxy cars to THINGS in them. It will severely compromise boot space for parents with kids equipment on trips (Camp cots and Prams etc.). They now have to get trailers and roof boxes additionally for those family trips.
Not at this stage. All variants use the square headlight in Australia, though there's always the chance that Toyota could use the round light as a special edition or a specification change at a later date.
Looks better than the 150 but it is a step backwards heavier, slower thirstier and fails in a water crossing less space in the mini boot. and it costs 10grand more.
1st Gen of a new model. I may take a look around 3rd Gen when they get rid of all the compromises of this one. Amazing that Toyota seem to have gotten rid of the things that their customers loved about the old model and kept what people didn't like (powertrain??). I am not knocking the look, I like it, but so many people use that rear area that making it smaller doesn't make any sense.
At the 5 minute mark you said that the prado shared underpining with the hilux and fortuner.... interestingly they don't .... Prado's are built in the tahara plant in Japan.... that model shared the chassis underpining with the Fj cruiseer... the 4runner.... Gx460... and the tacoma..... the Hilux and fortuner shared the underpining...but they dont share with the pradoo
Fair point, but what I'm trying to say is that the old prado had more to do with the HiLux and Fortuner, while now it's more like a 300 underneath. GX and FJ are almost a Prado with different hat on. - Sam
You're spot on, I've had to explain this to others reviewers also. Prados, original Pajeros & Jackaroos had their own chassis design, zero to do with ute variants. Weird how people think they're derived from ute range models. Like just take a close look. At least Sam substantiated his reference, but based his analogy on peoples misconceptions. 😂 Thanks Sam, love your work. Where's the Tank 500 off road review? Please commit to one, Wealie.
Australia have Land Cruiser Prado Altitude Kakadu models South Africa yet to receive all new Hyundai Santa Fe Renault Arkana & Lexus GX550 already in down under all of them .
Cant really seeing this hitting the mark for Australia's 4WD touring scene...no choice but to put a GVM upgrade otherwise you'd have to ask your wife and kids to catch the train, most draw systems with fridge's etc would weigh more than 60kg so the boot area is really restricted....the power train has really gone backwards...its a boy doing a mans job especially in a 300 series platform
@@glynotglen1098 you do understand how draw systems are utilised, right. Yes, all slid home and latched general floor space will carry the weight, now slide a draw open being utilised for heavy items, (spare parts, tools, recovery gear) whoops, all of a sudden that poonsy plastic box is carrying all the weight, plus & including leverage effect. After market draw system installers will have to develop a secondary support point.
@ mate, what are you talking about? Yes I know how drawers work my last prado has a drawer system. Once you take the seats out you also have to take the plastic box out. The new drawer systems then sit on a new load rated base. There’s a number of systems already available.
@@glynotglen1098 yes as I said, they'll have to develop a new secondary supported base. You don't get a level load rated floor in new Prado as it has the raised battery compartment, that's why Toyota have fitted those poonsy plastic boxes, to give you a level work platform, but only rated to 60kg. Clever design will be to remove poonsy plastic box, fill the lower level with shallow drawer up against battery compartment, then a full depth draw system on-top of that. That may be the viable answer. The raised battery compartment needs to remain in place, it powers the new 48v hybrid system.
"...its bigger, its wider..." with a "...fairly significant price hike..." - but vs the outgoing model, it is heavier, reduced power/weight ratio - and due to that pre-school engineering and ergonomic disaster at the back, it is no longer as versatile and practical as the previous 2 Prados. ALL OF THIS could have been avoided if they had an engine to at least match the competitors. I owned and loved both the previous Prados for about 20 years in total - but this new one is a disappointment for reasons mentioned. Must say though, I like the inside, electronics, infotainment, tyres and suspension setup vs the previous version...

The US iforce max petrol hybrid would have been great except it also has the raised floor....gotta be a better placement of the battery in a huge 4x4...Big fail!
What is in the air down under? All this whining from people who've been lapping up the toyota recipe since time immemorial. 1) toyota is a value not luxury brand. Expect intentionally underpowered simple powertrains, cheap hardwearing components like interior plastics and outdated technology. They are the kings of constraint for the sake of reliability and longevity. 2) Its 2024 everything is overpriced, who are they not to appropriately position their pricing according to the market. Yes there is a premium for that badge but it's not the end of the world. 3) Your country is seriously regulated, a blessing and a curse. That battery has to be there for the mild hybrid technology (if we can even call it that) as well as the swarm of safety features to pass regulation now and far into the future. Unfortunately this ramps up weight, pricing and complexity. Maybe just continue to buy Toyotas in astounding numbers quietly, find aftermarket solutions for the boot as you've always done with all other toyota shortcomings. They are still as reliable as ever, dont kid yourselves. Once they sort out a few teething problems as expected they'll run forever. If they can endure Africa's potholed roads with dirty fuel, cheap knockoff parts, minimal service all while overloaded 2 to 3 times if not more what they are rated at and still outperform most things on the road they'll be more than manageable in Australia.

It will severely compromise boot space for parents with kids equipment on trips (Camp cots and Prams etc.). They now have to get trailers and roof boxes additionally for those family trips.
How about the rounded headlights trims, arent they coming to australia?
Not at this stage. All variants use the square headlight in Australia, though there's always the chance that Toyota could use the round light as a special edition or a specification change at a later date.
Looks better than the 150 but it is a step backwards heavier, slower thirstier and fails in a water crossing less space in the mini boot. and it costs 10grand more.
I guess Fortuner's removable 3rd row has more space than Prado 250... People demanded it hybrid so it ate the space
They could have fit the battery and inverter inside the rear quarter panels. No?
Are these ones going to blow up as well?
the grey nomad caravan brigade seem to blowing a few up
So when’s the review to compare the Prado GXL versus Everest Sport?
Keep an eye out, we're working on putting that one together soon for publishing early in 2025.
Am looking forward to a towing test.
- Sam
Gotchaa, thanks for answering thoo👌😎
You're spot on, I've had to explain this to others reviewers also.
Prados, original Pajeros & Jackaroos had their own chassis design, zero to do with ute variants.
Weird how people think they're derived from ute range models.
Like just take a close look.
At least Sam substantiated his reference, but based his analogy on peoples misconceptions. 😂
Thanks Sam, love your work.
Where's the Tank 500 off road review? Please commit to one, Wealie.
Would the new MTS system be superior to the Super Select 2 of the Pajero Sport? :))
18 inch wheels are not good for off road, 17 is the choice for most 4wders
I like the presenter. Thanks.
Thankyou! - Sam
Australia have Land Cruiser Prado Altitude Kakadu models South Africa yet to receive all new Hyundai Santa Fe Renault Arkana & Lexus GX550 already in down under all of them .
No rear air suspension for me in the uk i am going to go back to a hilux next as the air suspension made it for me
Omg - that load space with 7 seats either up or down!! That’s a deal breaker !! Get rid of hybrid battery’s in boot.
10k more than an Everest for a car that is not as good.
Easy decision for most i would think.
@@prozakproductions1 the 60kg limit is just on the plastic storage box. The rest of the floor is rated higher
@@ianweal3081 yes as I said a number of systems are already on the market. I’ll be getting one.
Haha Toyota had eqyally as many haters as it does fan boys. Never seen a brand have as many people unhinged or in love as Toyota.
Not like there aren’t 5 seat options. So just buy a 5 seat version if you don’t like it. Also Just take the seats out? Plenty of aftermarket options coming out I’m sure. People have been taking seats out of landcruiser wagons for decades to suit different applications. Can’t see why there’s so much negativity about this and by the way I own a 150 Prado, an fj45 and have grown up with landcruisers my whole life. It’s a new generation of car. I like it and will be buying one. The world moves on - the old car was great but it’s a dinosaur by today’s standards.
Apparently if you take the third row seat out, the warranty is void.
@@fhclappen8595 Toyota have confirmed that warranty is not void if you take the seats out
Interestingly there is already a third row remove solution in the aftermarket.
Toyota will revoke your warranty if do that.
@@denilsonmusila Only if it affects anything the boot is warranty for, otherwise the rest of the Warranty still applies, plenty of dealers offering this to push cars out the door with full warranty, says a lot doesn't it.
Just buy a five-seat model instead? - Sam
@@Drivecomauthe best response!
Nice looking car but let down by the engine & boot section. Spare wheel under the car is not ideal. I'd go the 300 or the lexus to be honest.
I was waiting for this car for 2 years and now I'm not getting one.
Less fuel, less space, terrible boot, stupid 48v in the middle of nowhere. Who wants stop start.. no-one.
pay 100K+ to get a rear diff lock?
These look good, but that beep on the tailgate would have to go. Pure pointless annoyance.
Apparently can be changed to 1 beep
Sorry tried to edit my spelling mistake but can't
I cancelled my GXL order… very disappointed
Yes the everest is a good car but the biggest problem is that he also suffers from donored parts of other vechiles just like me and fords except the mustang , mache , and bronco
So it completely makes sense to buy this prado over some junk jeeps defender broncos etc
Wait for the petrol.
Poor review…After driving one…I can confirm it’s way more expensive, bigger but smaller inside, 200kg heavier on same old engine, hopeless rear boot with 60kg weight limit, 7 seat versions are just a complete design screw up. I am a big Toyota fan on my 4th 200 series and this new Prado is a joke. Buy an Everest.
How on earth is a fine or a duty on emissions going to help the environment.
The idea is to reduce overall emissions of cars on the road, with fines. Buying incentives are a carrot, this is the stick. - Sam
The interior looks nice until you start pushing buttons and parts of the dash moves. Everything on this car is cheap and thin. Sad
Do yourself a favour and get a V6 Ford Everest. $92,000 184kW and 600nM.
Oh and a boot.
doing the reverse test is ridiculous
Feels like Toyota paid promotion review.. as a long time Toyota fan I sadly cancelled my VX after seeing this model in person… poorly designed third row, no payload information, dpf with adblue 🙄
They are at the mercy of the car companies. If they were given a car to review and told the truth they would be out of business, they would never get another car from any manufacturer. I take very little notice of these professional
reviews because mostly, as you say , they are bullshit.
Small boot and 60kg boot limit. Most SUV can beat that.
It's slower than the old one. 😆
Petrol for petrol mower
if Ford can put a fridge in the centre console like my old 150 VX, i am in. Toyota, with the third row seat set up you really put your foot in it. it is TERRIBLE.... such a shame
Lost opportunities to make it great, it’s seems compromised
"Last night's dinner warmed up" - sums up the new 2025 Toyota Landcruiser Prado. Disappointing.. :( Sluggish, Heavier (most likely fuel burner than previous model)
prefer my Fortuna anytime.....
Ad blue wtf ? Corners cut rear boot the annoying tumble seats compromise rear boot space and no diff lock ? but puts up the prices , avoid it .
Ill stick to my fortuner crusade! Less tech and more reliability
Was the flagship , slower heavier and a embarrassment
Don't buy the first model, I made the mistake with the Hilux in 2015 and it was riddled with issues, Toyota has dropped the ball over the years
It’s a 4cyl 300 series
Has a more modern infotainment / dash and placement of buttons plus extra USB in front. 300 was dated on the day it was released.... shame with 250 is the raised boot floor and slug of an engine. The US iforce max petrol hybrid would have been great except it also has the raised floor....gotta be a better placement of the battery in a huge 4x4...Big fail!
Or is the 300 series a V6 prado?
Sorry but my opinion is that its one of the ugliest cars on the road is it brother with the Tasman
It could be better
Very uninspiring and compromised vehicle but hey Toyota doesn’t have to do much 17K orders already…….
How many of you have driven one? Easy to criticise from behind a keyboard 🤣😂🤣😂
Who are tojo trying to kid? Toy car. Get a V8 Y62.
What a disappointing car, they really screwed this one up.
It almost feels like they mess it up on purpose so people will still buy Lexus.
Heavier and slower than the old model, poorly designed rear seats/cargo area, and way overpriced. People will buy it because it's a Toyota, but I'd rather save 20k (on the GXL) and buy a top of the range Isuzu MU-x LST.
Toyota is no where near better than the ford everest ford is more modern shape with the v6 engine prado keeps flogging the old 4 cylinder engine witch wasn't any good 6years ago its dpf is rubbish
Terrible payload for towing anything decent
I think I’ll get back mg $500 deposit, expensive for nothing..
Looks Fugly and missed the expectation completely and I think people are starting to realise that Toyota have run out of ideas and expecting people to just buy a Toyota on advertising terms such as "legendary" and "unbreakable"is starting to wane especially at these massive price premiums when compared to much better value for money propositions from other brands.
There crap its that simple less boot space not made for water or mud work crap stop the bs
Omg dont let them in the country, send them to ellis island its worce than a boat load of refugees
Avoid.
These reviewers shit me. Waffle on about the effing grill with a Toyota badge, a few boxy panels. Ignore the shit interior design, shit old motor, unwanted or used electric motor, way way way overpriced and cheap tinny finish.
Its an EV! No thanks !
